Scalebound's Cancellation Raises A Big Problem For Microsoft

Microsoft has announced that it is canceling a their would be exclusive Scalebound. Leaving Platinum Games in the dust. But, this isn't the first time this generation that Xbox pulled the plug on a big production. It's not even the second time. Which has left Microsoft in a tough spot. Where 2017 is a lack of exclusives for Microsoft. When Xbox needs more exclusive IP the most it seems 2017 maybe a dry year for Microsoft. Sony is going to take advantage of that this year with a slew of exclusives from Playstation that is slated this year. Why does Playstation get a pass?

I wonder what company or SONY themselves will just suck this one up and keep it going? Heard it hear first ;) :P

remixx1163403d ago

I think MS owns the iP, now the real problem rears it's ugly head.

Their relationship was said to have soured some ways on and this isn't the first time MS has pissed off a Japanese dev "Namco Bandai".

They might wanna be careful or risk losing all Japanese support.

naruga3403d ago (Edited 3403d ago )

probably they r preparing a launch line up for Scorpio ...which wont be Backward compatible ! MS will try to start a new console generation cyrcle probably...

Kokyu3403d ago

@Naruga Nintendo is starting next gen in a few days, the Switch is Nintendo's next gen console, the Wii U was current gen for Nintendo.

Wouldnt surprise me if MS wanted Scalebound move to Scorpio as an exclusive but we will have to wait a few more months to find out what MS's plan is for Scorpio.

RevXM3403d ago

@naruga
Wait have MS turned their strategy around for Scorpio?
When announced they said Scorpio would be just a beefy XO SKU and the old XO would be forward compatible with all MS games. Have anything changed in the last couple months?

GameNameFame3403d ago

Wow Xbox fans are trying to spin this hard...

Scorpio was noted to be fully backward compatible. Extension of Xbox One. They are not shelving this one for Scorpio.

MS is already in weakened state in terms of PC/Xbox Exclusives. This just makes things worse.

zerocarnage3403d ago

as a Xbox one owner I couldn't agree more really if the truth is its ms fault. what exactly is the truth though, you know what they say it takes two to argue, the blame can't be just put on ms solely.

But I do believe with the lack on map games on Xbox one, that ms should be bending over backwards to bring the Jap games to Xbox console, if it's the one thing Sony have over ms it's that entirely.

Iv been saying it for long time now, Xbox needs those different regional games, western releases alone won't do it.

Sony doesnt care what microsoft does with the xbox division. PlayStation handles its own, no need to bring them into xbox's problems. I say xbox should start taking more notes than anything. Every company should be taking notes as a matter of fact.

Im still hoping to see more of crackdown 3

SilverDemon3403d ago

yeah but sony snatch good games/devs when they see them
kojima
lost soul aside
sucker punch
naughty dog
etc....

this could be next

notachance3403d ago

@silverdemon Sony didn't 'snatch', they invest since way back when the team is still small yet have a lot of potential, like they didn't buy Naughty Dog after Nathan Drake became PS icon.

xbox fanboy loves to say that playstation focus on indie too much but those indie studios are exactly how Sony's first party studios first started, some of them will be the future naughty dog, what Sony does this era is what they always done in the past.

Aloy-Boyfriend3403d ago

"xbox fanboy loves to say that playstation focus on indie too much but those indie studios are exactly how Sony's first party studios first started, some of them will be the future naughty dog, what Sony does this era is what they always done in the past."

Preach!!!

_-EDMIX-_3403d ago

Agreed from what I've seen it's almost as if Microsoft is desperately trying to sell Xboxes without having to actually resort to really investing like Sony.

I think of their mind last generation those same properties were enough to sell 80 + million 360 and I seriously think Microsoft thought they could just keep doing the same thing.

When you look at the PlayStation 3 and 360 it is very clear it is extremely obvious that Sony produced more new intellectual properties that generation yet they only marginally sold better than 360 so I believe in Microsoft minds they believed that they had a formula that made sense.

Halo gears Forza along with timed exclusives.

Except the trick with timed exclusives can only work for so long before consumers begin not trusting the concept it's something that is only a Band-Aid it could not solve everyone's problems there's only so many times that someone could believe a title is not coming to another platform.

When Tomb Raider was announced to be exclusive to Xbox One basically this entire site erupted with jokes about when it was going to be released for PlayStation 4 and PC lol

They didn't really need to tell us that it was timed exclusive trust me all of us already know this trick and consumers just don't care.

When Sony lost so much market share during the PlayStation 3 generation it wasn't very clear from the outset that their plan was to double down on their internal Studios more so than during the PlayStation 2 generation.

That plan had them out sell 360 but not by a lot but clearly the concept and formula caught on to Consumers and is probably why PlayStation 4 is selling as well as it selling, Sony is actually a trusted brand that deliver brand new series and franchises.

Not simply just a one-off or timed games actually brand new SERIES!!!!

Mind you they are not simply just doing this with a property they don't own or doing it with an IP they own or a team they don't own , they are 100% showing you that they are invested in the future of this series by actually using a team they own and an intellectual property they own and they're making it very clear that it is intended to be a series, this is the type of action that consumers like to see.

They like to know that it is a product with a future that it is the beginning of an epic and not simply a one-off title where the future of its existence is questionable,

Microsoft made an extremely bad habit of doing that last generation and consumers don't feel comfortable purchasing those properties from Microsoft.

Microsoft doesn't need to tell us or show us anything they need real long-term actions and trust is something that is build long-term they would need an entire generation of doing this before consumers can even trust them to deliver.

Sunny_D3403d ago

@notachance

Exactly. They call it Indiestation? Damn right it's an indiestation. Because those game devs will become the next 1st party behemoths like Naughty Dog, Santa Monica or Guerilla Games.

Microsoft better have a two hour long E3 conference. One hour for Scorpio & another hour for games

subtenko3403d ago

games that wont come out till 6 years later, 1/8th which will be cancelled. They better stop all the BS with the next console cycle scorpio. no more you hear me xbox?! You have had plenty of time to stop and smell the roses.

showtimefolks3403d ago

You mean how crackdown and scale bound were announced years ago along with Quantum break

It's easier to release the same 3 games every other year

butchertroll3403d ago (Edited 3403d ago )

"and be better about saying release dates."

Games showed at E3 2014 are released in 2015 and 2016. Games showed at E3 during 2015 are released in 2016 and it will be released this year. This year at E3 will be probably some games slated for 2018. So, no need to worry.

morganfell3403d ago (Edited 3403d ago )

subtenk,

Or games that will not come out at all. MS will hold a conference, show some vids and promise the sky and people will just go Oooh and Aaah and forget and those are the same people that make the current MS situation inevitable. By just forgetting and fawning over them they grant them license to continue on this road. Just look at the past:

E3 2014 Microsoft Exclusives Shown:

1. Fable Legends: Cancelled
2. Project Spark: Cancelled
3. Ori and the Blind Forest: Came out 2015
4. Inside: Came out 2016
5. Below: Unreleased
6. Phantom Dust: Cancelled
7. Crackdown: Unreleased
8. Scalebound: Cancelled
9. Halo 5: Came out 2015

E3 2014 Sony Exclusives Shown:

1. Deep Down: Unreleased
2. Eve: Valkyrie: Came out 2016
3. Let It Die: Came out 2016
4. The Order: 1886: Came out 2015
5. The Witness: Came out 2016
6. Everybody's Gone to the Rapture: Came out 2015
7. Bloodborne: Came out 2015
8. No Man's Sky: Came out 2016
9. Ratchet & Clank: Came out 2016
10. Uncharted 4: A Thief's End: Came out 2016

And this year the flood of PS4 titles is utterly ridiculous. So glad I worked early and hard and can now do what I wish because the volume of titles this year from Sony is a certified damn buster.

Why o why3403d ago

I think we can all now kill the whole 'winning e3' lording too. . It's just another separatist bait when what it seems like is more of a 'prettiest vest' gloat in the 100m finals. .

If they all show games then on paper we all win. . . Problem right now is that e3 is a long way off. That said at least some deals or work can be done on titles so there may be the possibility of actually showing stuff

Sunny_D3403d ago

After Sony got that big stage during E3 2106 with an orchestra, they have won for the next few years.

_-EDMIX-_3403d ago

For Microsoft to do well at E3 and in my personal opinion they would need to do more than simply announce games , they would literally need to announce Acquisitions of specific teams for consumers to have trust that those games will even be invested in the future.

If Microsoft announces a game that they don't own the IP to I don't care

if they announce a game that they don't own the team but they only IP I don't care

if they announce that they have a timed
exclusive to a third party property I don't care.

If Microsoft wants to show that they are truly in this for the long run they actually seriously need to fund a property from the ground up from a team they own internally to really prove that it's anything of real substance.

loverlink3403d ago

If PG kept the IP, they could've pulled a Sleeping Dogs move and re branded the game under a different title. But MS owns the IP so the chances of that happening are slim.

Rude-ro3403d ago

There is no fact that Microsoft owns it.

PhoenixUp3403d ago

@ Rudo-ro

Yes there is. Platinum Games is incapable of owning any IP since they are a freelance developer and not a publisher. Any IP Platinum works on belongs to whoever is publishing that game

rdgneoz33403d ago

Unless Platinum put something in the contract saying they owned the IP. It is normal with some devs, seeing how Insomniac owns the IP rights to Sunset Overdrive (for which they gave MS exclusivity as a result). Freelance devs can own the rights to their own games, they just have to find the right publisher.

PhoenixUp3403d ago

Platinum has never owned any IP before and are incapable of doing so. You think that would suddenly change now?

Insomniac owns a publishing arm so they are capable of owning IPs. If a developer does not have a publishing arm it is incapable of owning IPs.

NapalmSanctuary3402d ago

Thats not how it works. Publishers don't automatically own every IP they publish. There has to be a specific clause in a contract to grant ownership of an IP to the publisher, otherwise the creators are automatically granted copyrights to the works. PG could create an IP and find a publisher without transferring ownership. Kamiya has a golden reputation. He's never made a bad game. As long as hes directing the title, they wouldn't have a hard time finding a publisher while retaining ownership of the property.

PhoenixUp3402d ago

Yet Platinum hasn't retained the IP ownership to any game they've worked on.

What makes you think theyd start now

NapalmSanctuary3401d ago

"Yet Platinum hasn't retained the IP ownership to any game they've worked on. What makes you think they'd start now."

Excerpt from PG blog
'A message from the president'
"I have also told all of the company staff about my intentions to create a completely new and original company-owned IP within 3 years. Ever since PlatinumGames was founded, we’ve always dreamed of owning our own IP, and last year we made the first steps towards achieving that goal."
https://www.platinumgames.c...

According to Daemon Hatfield over at IGN, PG retained the rights to Scalebound.
https://youtu.be/rzGJqFO5-f...

PhoenixUp3400d ago

@ Napalm

Except Microsoft actually owns the trademark for Scalebound 😑

http://trademarks.justia.co...

Now you can continue being delusional in believing that a company without a publishing arm can own an IP, but the fact I presented is definitive proof Scalebound is a Microsoft property.

NapalmSanctuary3400d ago

A trademark is just for the name. It doesn't give Ms ownership over the game or anything in it. All PG has to do is rename it. Copyrights, on the other hand, are automatic. If Ms didn't acquire them through contract then they are ineligible unless PG willingly sells it to them.

"Now you can continue being delusional in believing that a company without a publishing arm can own an IP, but the fact I presented is definitive proof Scalebound is a Microsoft property."

This statement doesn't even make any sense. Its actually very common. Practically every indie developer owns IPs. The fact you presented doesn't mean anything other than, for the next 10 years, no one can name their game "Scalebound".

PhoenixUp3400d ago

Platinum's own website had Scalebound listed as a copyright to Microsoft prior to its cancellation.

NapalmSanctuary3400d ago (Edited 3400d ago )

"Platinum's own website had Scalebound listed as a copyright to Microsoft prior to its cancellation."

With all due respect, if you had lead with that, I might have believed you.

PhoenixUp3400d ago

Well it's hard to bring up since that webpage has been taken down since the cancellation.

dveio7d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing7d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster927d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit7d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing7d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster926d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
