MS and Platinum Games will get flack for this. MS is better to impress this E3 because Xbox One exclusive games cancellations is getting out of control.

Phantom Dust, Fable and now Scalebound.

I don´t know who to blame but, something is just not right at MS´s Game Studios for some time now.

ElementX3294d ago

Fable wasn't going to be very good and Scalebound didn't grab my attention. I'd rather have MS cancel games they know won't sell instead of dump more money into them.

Vegamyster3294d ago

I wanted to at least give Fable a go, it seemed like it was pretty much done.

Nyxus3294d ago

Microsoft has enough money. If the game needed more work they should just have delayed it.

Kaneki-Ken3294d ago

Microsoft was at fault with the cancelled Fable because they forced the studio to stop making a single player Fable which could have been Fable 4 and forced to work on a multiplayer Fable that led the downfall.

Darkfist_Flames3294d ago

then they should cancel all their games except halo,Forza, and gears xD.

mocaak3294d ago

@Nyxus

Just because Microsoft has a lot of money, doesn't mean they can just throw it everywhere. When they invest in something, they expect profit from it. Xbox generates only a minor income out of whole Microsoft.

Kingthrash3603294d ago

But QB and recore was good enough to release??
Naw something is happening.
This isn't a good thing at all.

Lonnie183294d ago (Edited 3294d ago )

Nah but where's the varity, you may not have like em but others might like some dragons in their game...

Angeljuice3294d ago (Edited 3294d ago )

I always said Scalebound wouldn't sell on XB1, I thought I was speaking figuratively though.

Platinum are top notch devs, don't downplay it too fervently, it is a real loss.

FunAndGun3294d ago

Yeah, they shouldn't ever take chances. /s

Also, doesn't everyone always talk about how much money MS has and how broke Sony is....but Sony always be taking chances. lol

Sunny_D3294d ago

Instead of just cancelling games, how about they show us new ip's?

Kyizen3294d ago

So all you want to Halo, Forza and Gears? Then your set next year you will have Halo 6 Forza 7 and Gears 5, the year after that Halo 7 Forza 8 and Gears 6...lol

Raiden3293d ago

SAD moment for XBOX fans AGAIN, games shouldn't get cancelled, if its crap make decent and playable and make the sequel EPIC, why show gamers a game like this getting all there hopes up only to then take it away, its not a nice feeling, I think gamers would rather wait for a game than have it cancelled, just look at TLG, 7-8 YEARS waiting or longer, but it still made to the shelves, these games shouldn't be getting cancelled.
Phantom Dust, Fable and now Scalebound.

candystop3293d ago

Well I was part of the Fable beta and must say the game not only sucked but sucked more with each update. MS is killing me lately with there whole new approach on exclusives but I will say there was no saving Fable and we are better off without it. Scalebound I'm sure was still looking like a hot mess and when Phil realized it or checked it out for e3 I'm almost certain he was like wtf! MS wants it's big games to live up to a standard. Platinum games had plenty of time to deliver something promising but all this drama is to much for Phil. I'm not defending MS but it's clear the developer wasn't delivering what they originally wanted to. Sony has been lucky with its developers which is why MS really needs to hunt down and assemble a team that can deliver games. Many new developers out there waiting to be discovered. Scorpio is going to be a huge thing and as depressing as this sounds the game was never going to progress and keep looking half azz .

Liqu1d3293d ago

Why can Sony invest into niche games but Microsoft can't? After all MS have so much money as we're constantly reminded.

Why o why3293d ago

I know things are not going well when candystop expresses concern.......

In my opinion, this is why the numbers approach sony adopts works better. Delays and cancellations can often be covered with other games, lessening the blows so to speak.

MS need to turn things around and not only for its gamers but for developers too.....working under Microsoft may not be looking too appealing right about now and you kinda need them to improve the situation.

bouzebbal3293d ago

and you prefer to play...nothing right?
What if all games coming out this year are cancelled because they didn't grab ElementX's attention.. not even you would be satisfied.. imagine everyone else.

Kokyu3294d ago (Edited 3294d ago )

Blame Scorpio.

@bouzebbal yeah cause making a console with that uses Ryzen and Zen chips costs nothing and shifts no focus at all.

bouzebbal3294d ago

A console without games, that is !! What's the point really ?

dcbronco3294d ago

I wouldn't say it has no games. Most games seem to be dynamic resolution now. That means Scorpio will have many re-masters you won't have to pay for again. Plus if the rumors of potential PC compatibility are true there will be no shortage of software. Many major studios are using UWP now which should make those Scorpio games to. That should be the bomb Microsoft plans to drop at E3. If so, content on Xbox will never be an issue again.

mcstorm3294d ago

@dc I agree. Tbh if you look at both Sony and Microsoft this gen intact 3rd party's to we have not seen the same quality from than as we saw last gen. We don't have to many new ips and a lot of the older IPS are stale to. For me I can't wait for Microsoft Nintendo and Sony to move over to there new consoles as all 3 offer us some amazing IPS again. Don't get me wrong we have had some great ones this gen but some bad ones to and a lot of broken ones to.

BlackTar1873293d ago

Not sure they cancelled Phantom Dust for good. I thought I heard it was put on hold because of a switch of developer. Could be wrong, and hope I'm not. Phantom Dust was cool on the original Xbox.

3294d ago
Sciurus_vulgaris3294d ago

The Phantom Dust reboot was cancelled very early in development and was recently (last year), replaced by a Phantom Dust Remaster.

darthv723294d ago

Is phantum dust canceled? Last I read it was on hold while they get a new developer to work on it.

Obscure_Observer3294d ago

@darthv72

That´s true. But at atm nobody step up to the task what seems odd. Because as far we know at this point its not like all MS game studios are busy developing exclusive games or new ips.

blackblades3294d ago

From gematsu "The relationship between the two companies reportedly “soured” following Scalebound‘s last showing in August at Gamescom 2016. Several staff members are said to have been forced to take a month away from the pressure of the project’s heavy workload in the fall. When they returned, Scalebound was behind schedule, and with issues surrounding the game’s engine and overdue deadlines, the decision was made to cease development."

blackblades3294d ago

I don't think it was platinum games fault. From what I read somewhere it's all ms, they had some fallout or something and ms let them go.

darthv723294d ago

It could be that their work on Nier was progressing much quicker than this game and that might be part of their "falling out".

Automatic793294d ago

@obscure_observer

I think you are exaggerating, further we have games coming this year E3 is around the corner, don't let one title that Platinum could not deliver on, cloud your judgement on Xbox.

MRMagoo1233294d ago

next e3 ? so they can announce more games they will cancel months from release 😂

Obscure_Observer3294d ago

@MichaelLito79

I still belive Spencer and the Xbox Team to deliver great games and experiences trought 2017 and beyond. But we simply can´t ignore MS isn´t really doing much when we talk about exclusive games and studios. Why Playground and Remedy has not been bought already? They had the chance to acquire Bioware and they missed! What´s next?

Phil and Team are well informed guys and i´m sure they are aware of the need to bring more exclusives and new ips for Xbox One. I don´t care if it goes to PC as well since it´s still locked to Xbox and you need Window10 and Xbox app to play it. More audience, better and bigger games.

Here´s hopping MS delivers this E3. ;)

rainslacker3293d ago (Edited 3293d ago )

One game that was MS last cling to "variety", gets cancelled, and the best solace you can offer is "Wait for E3"?

We've been hearing "wait for [insert next big event here]" since before the console even released, and so far this gen, MS game output has been nothing short of disappointing. Not that they don't have some good games released, but quite literrally, the only games of worth were their staples, and one indie game. The rest were adequete, but nothing to write home about.

At some point you have to recognize that MS is failing hard on the software front....despite constant claims about how they're a software company, not a hardware one. Yet right now, the biggest talking point they have is a hardware one. Ironic huh?

One of MS biggest criticisms this gen is that their software isn't that compelling or full of varied releases. You are quite literally the only devout Xbox fan boy in this thread so far that I've seen saying that there's nothing to worry about. Even Septic and Moldy are like wtf....so you know something is wrong.

So, is it Platinum couldn't deliver? After 4 years? Possibly. But what about Lionhead? Why does it take MS 4+ years to realize that a game isn't going to be good to release? Fable had some positive press and was close to release. Scalebound had some criticism, but still had some hype and looked OK outside some cosmetic stuff, yet it gets canned with a release imminent? CD3 has barely been shown after 3 years. MS isn't trying to get exclusive deals, and has no new 2nd party games to put in their pocket. Their last E3 was almost all games we already knew about. MS has talked almost exclusively about Scorpio since last E3, except for a few weeks when Gears and Forza released.

What's sad, is that for all the praise that Spencer is getting, MS was actually more attractive before he took over, because at least we had actual games to look forward to. If it weren't for all those DRM policies, then there wouldn't have been much to complain about. Last couple years has just gone downhill...and fast.

What more does it take to see something rotten is going on in Redmond?

Start demanding better, because people that just wait and hope for the best without the criticism give MS no incentive to actually be better.

Fable was really really bad. Like a very bad game where all you do is take a beloved series and completely change it. Remember when they did that already for the spin of kinect game? Worse than that, but it would have made a lot of money off of micro transactions. M$ made the right decision with that, because gamers would have pitched themselves into a coma over how bad it was.

Scalebound deserved to be canceled after the dev kept running his mouth about how awful M$ was at showcasing his game. Okay go sell it somewhere else.

Angeljuice3294d ago

Throwing hissy fits isn't classy. Everyone was banging on about how great Scalebound was going to be, it gets cancelled and suddenly it was always going to suck anyway.

trooper_3293d ago

So you're okay with less games.

Alrighty then.

I'm starting to believe that everything shown at E3 2014 was nothing but smoke and mirrors.

DigitalRaptor3294d ago (Edited 3294d ago )

This is exactly why Microsoft needs more first-party studios, just like the other companies who have been in the gaming industry for 15+ years and invested in all the right ways. I struggle to see how any Xbox fan can damage control this. And just how can new IPs be failing so hard under this company, when they are one of the most important things in the growth of this industry, and it's so incredibly cash rich compared to its competitors?

MS closed 8 first-party studios/projects in March of last year. https://twitter.com/vg_dave...

The recent closures at Xbox HQ have been brutal, but the dedicated are damage controlling and acting like all is okay. Lionhead went under the chopping block after years of fans being strung along. Now we have another major 2017 game canceled in Scalebound (which was in all honestly looking like absolute cack from the very beginning). I wouldn't be surprised if Crackdown 3 is canceled at this rate (as it is internally realised as more of an Azure computing tech demo than an all-round quality game - although, I could be wrong), and we've seen less of that since its long-time ago announcement. I also wouldn't be surprised if Sea of Thieves gets an open beta release in 2017, with the full game coming out next year.

Their exclusive lineup for 2017 is looking increasingly thin. Like, pathetically thin for a console going into its 4th year on the market. MS is coasting on an "exclusive" lineup of games that were announced back in 2014 or 2015, with a number of them delayed, cancelled or just not living up to the hype. I can see why the more die-hard fans are hyping up things like 4K Blu-ray and backwards compatibility so hard now. The next big hype train is Scorpio, and I'm sorry but a hardware upgrade is not enough without the software to match. Wow, MS.... wow!
-------

@ Septic & gangstarrrr

When you are not both replying to my comments trying to discredit what I have to say about MS or Sony.... it's an admission that what I have said is either right or not wrong, so hmmmm. You've both definitely agreed with me in the past but simply forgot and conveniently tried to make this instance as if the only such time - and funny that you've even both argued with me before, accused me of stuff and later come to terms with what me saying actually holding water. Like just how Quantum Break was going to blow Uncharted 4 out of the water. Funny how I've been saying a lot of this for a while, and only now am I backhandedly vindicated. Very interesting indeed.

Mystogan3294d ago

Xbox fan here, No defending this. But this doesn't hurt as much as Fable Legends.
At least they teased unannounced projects coming in 2017.

BlakHavoc3294d ago

You can't just assume that because the Xbox brand is backed by MS as a company that they're going to dump all kinds of money into it. It's just a division in the MS company and I'm sure they wouldn't hesitate to shut the division down if it's costing them money. Now the Xbox brand makes MS a crap ton of money so it's not going anywhere, I just don't agree when ppl say MS has all this money, why isn't the Xbox brand more effective.

MasterCornholio3294d ago

Nah Crackdown will not get cancelled. If they are really struggling with cloud technology they can easily remove it since it's only for the multiplayer part of the game.

ocelot073294d ago

I agree with @BlackHavoc here. Just because Xbox is apart of Microsoft. Does not mean Microsoft will pump money into the Xbox division if he Xbox division is losing money. If the Xbox division does indeed start losing money then Microsoft could just close down the Xbox division or sell it.

Am not saying that is going to happen anytime soon because it's not. It's the same with Sony if the PlayStation division started losing Sony money will simply sell that division/brand or close it down. But that division makes Sony plenty of money so they won't be selling of the PlayStation division anytime soon.

Outside_ofthe_Box3294d ago

Don't know how what Digital said here is any different than what he'd typically say in the past.

Take away this sentence: ***"Now we have another major 2017 game canceled in Scalebound (which was in all honestly looking like absolute cack from the very beginning)"***
And put EXACTLY what he wrote here in an Xbox article yesterday he'd be called a troll...

Now MS cancels Scalebound (which in all honestly had a lot of potential in my opinion) and Digital makes a typical Raptor post it's something that everyone agrees with??? roflamo

_-EDMIX-_3294d ago

Completely agreed.

I've been saying this over and over and over again their entire first party is a house of cards.

When you have so little teams and you're always paying for games in regards to owning the intellectual property but not owning the team or neither you were going to come across situations like this and it's just spreading yourself extremely thin

This is one of the reasons why even without lionhead there wouldn't even be a team to create Fable 4, this is exactly why BioWare was able to even be purchased by Electronic Arts because Microsoft not owning the intellectual property or the team I'm sorry but this company is just a house of cards in regards to their first party all you need to do is take one thing away and they're basically the whole year is ruined.

Guerilla Games is making Horizon zero Dawn but the reality is they have several other teams that could continue the Killzone franchise

That is something that Microsoft can not say about a major franchise if they team left or if a team work on another project.

Isn't it within the realm of possibility that the game might have been cancelled simply because Microsoft didn't even have a team to continue its development?

Consider that many of us talked about the order 1886 having so many issues but lots of us also mentioned that Sony Santa Monica could take over the franchise or Sucker Punch or many other teams that Sony actually has...

Consider how many times have you heard Gamers say that a Heavenly sword 2 could possibly be developed by Sony Santa Monica?

What I'm saying is not only against Microsoft it's in favor of the gamers that enjoy the platform. ..

Microsoft needs more teams there's no reason for them to have more money than Sony yet less teams, they openly choose to be in this situation because they're scared to invest that's what worries me about their placement in the rumors of them leaving the game industry because their actions very much coincide with such a theory.

Regardless of how you feel about the company you cannot deny that having more teams would be welcomed and would fix such a situation like this this is to no benefit to the consumer to have less games and less teams to develop them.

Any person arguing against this is basically arguing against their own damn best interest.....

I'm sorry but less is not better
less games is not awesome
less new intellectual properties is not cool and cancellations of games isn't awesome

n4rc3294d ago (Edited 3294d ago )

I'm just kind of confused.. you state the game looked like crap but then act like it's some huge revelation that it's cancelled.. it's not damage control when you don't care that shit looking games get cancelled.. it's expected

Edmix.. invest in who exactly? It's not like AAA studios are just waiting around for someone to buy them up.. guys seem to think you can just form a naughty dog caliber studio because you want to.. it doesn't work that way..

UCForce3294d ago

Damn, I agree with you. What was MS thinking ?

Why o why3293d ago (Edited 3293d ago )

@n4rc

It takes time and persistence. Naughty Dog was cultivated, grown from less to become what they are. Sony rarely buys the finished product. Ms has been in the game long enough to have built a more productive stable. Mismanagement and bad luck has followed ms this gen especially. People want games. Cloud or scorpio hypes can only appease people for a limited time.

Look at Rimeskeems comment below.....he can see that sonys push at working with indies is beneficial in ways that transcend this gen or past that. Ms didn't capitalise on their relationship with indie devs last gen.

_-EDMIX-_3293d ago

@n4rc- "invest in who exactly? It's not like AAA studios are just waiting around for someone to buy them up"

Well they actually are... tons of development teams exist that have limited funding that would probably have no problem being purchased by Microsoft if Microsoft can guarantee the funding to all their major projects.

Did you forget that Sega purchased Atlus? Did you forget that Sega also purchased Relic games along with creative assembly? Ironically enough the team that's actually creating Halo Wars 2....

Sooooo Sega purchased the team that is now creating Halo Wars 2, are you sure that Microsoft could not have purchased such a team?

So Sega can but Microsoft can't? Sony purchased several teams last Generation so Sony could do that in Microsoft can't?

Crytek is on the verge of going out of business is there a reason why Microsoft is not purchasing them despite them making many great first person shooters and holding many great intellectual properties? Did they not make Ryse?

I'm sorry but your argument just Falls to Pieces when you factor other Publishers are purchasing development teams it is not impossible.

So what you're telling me is Microsoft is just incompetent and Sony knows all the tricks to purchasing multiple teams? Help me understand how Sony is able to in Microsoft is not because this doesn't make any sense and it's just the stupidest excuse in light of so many examples.

So Sony has more money than Microsoft to do this? Lol I mean They had zero problems purchasing Minecraft lol

MyDietEqualsGames3293d ago

MasterCornholio3294d ago (Edited 3293d ago )

Well it hasn't been cancelled yet so it can still come out. Also E3 isn't far away so we might see more of the game by then.

And with an install base of over 60 million systems by then and the fact that Final Fantasy sells extremely well on PlayStation gives it a good chance of not being cancelled.

Fact still remains all these games are not "Smoke & Mirrors" and were all completed, finished and released. That's the point I was making. Not defending the cancellation. It really sucks, but there were many games announced in 2014 that got released. Sure, this is a blow to XBox, but there are still more games to come, so I'll wait and see what's provided at the E3. This is why I don't favor just one game consoles. I own them all.

Hideki Kamiya wants to revive Scalebound: 'Let's do it, Phil'

Hideki Kamiya is still interested in developing Scalebound, after the PlatinumGames and Microsoft action game was cancelled back in 2017.

ZwVw318d ago

He's been begging for the past three years. That ship has long sailed. Besides, Phil's a fake. When's the last time he delivered on a game the fans asked for? Still waiting on him to greenlight KI4.

InUrFoxHole317d ago

@8bit
Yeah I mentioned that below. Although in comparison concord was a bigger failure.

MetroidFREAK21318d ago

I mean I'm all for it... I'd buy it for PS5 since Xbox is doing these multiplatform releases now

MetroidFREAK21318d ago

Well, I vastly prefer physical versions of games, and I can't do that with my Series S... sooooooo assume what you will

Lexreborn2318d ago

Scalebound was my reasoning for buying and Xbox one. Legit my biggest let down last gen

raWfodog318d ago

Same here. That was going to be the game I'd buy a Xbox One for back in the day. It'd be good if they did revive it and improve on what they had at the time.

Chocoburger318d ago

Seems odd to be asking for it now that he left Platinum Games. He'll be busy with Okami 2 for a number of years, does he expect to develop the game at Clovers studio now? Would they be picking up where they left off, or starting over again? Any of the previous team members, or just him?

I doubt Phil would fund it again, but if so, then that would be good news, also fund a new Banjo as well as Conker games while you're at it. I miss Conker!

Michiel1989318d ago

doesn't seem odd at all, he'd want work and that game even though it suffered some bad press with the cancellation and stuff is still something that people want to see (i think)

The cancellation of Rainbow Six Patriots, Alice Asylum, and Scalebound, among others, have hit players and fans like a truck over time.

Advent Rising was planned to be a trilogy, and we never got parts 2 and 3.

Also wish THPS 10 was never canceled back in 2008. They were releasing the games at too fast a pace and just needed to slow it down instead of abandon the series entirely to make endless Guitar Hero games.

Stupid Activision executives.

My biggest "disappointment" for me, will always be Kojima's original MGS Rising from E3 2010.
The reveal trailer will always top my Gaming Expo highlights list, followed by MGS5 Ground Zeroes reveal at PAX 2013 and God of War reveal at E3 2016.
It looked soo good and cool. My heart sank when the whole Platinum's Revengeance thing got announced.
My 2nd disappointment is another Kojima, the Silent Hills.
3rd is tie b/w Rainbow 6: Patriots and the original Ghost Recon Future Soldier 2010 version.
4th is Unreal Tournament 4/2014
5th is Half Life Return to Ravenholm
(Dis)Honorable mentions: Delta Force Angel Falls, Brothers in Arms: Furious 4, Fallout Van Buren, Capcom's Deep Down, Original Duke Nukem Forever 2001 version, Prey 2, Command & Conquer: Generals 2, Timesplitters 4, Alice: Asylum, Mercenaries 3, KOTOR3, Star Wars 1313, StarCraft: Ghost, Legacy of Kain: Dead Sun, Whore of the Orient, Fable Legends, Star Wars Project Ragtag and maybe Agent?
Half Life 2 Episode 3 should top my list, but I still believe it'll happen. You know what might break the gaming internet and steal some of GTA 6's thunder? If Valve just posts '3' in any of their social account.

I love Rising Revengeance, but I would have loved to see MGS: Rising, where we got to see Raiden's body destroyed at Area 51, and play some portions of MGS 4 from Raiden's perspective.

Good pick.

Did you see play Advent Rising? If so, what did you think of it?

Yes I played it long ago. Its kind of like Mass Effect, years before Mass Effect. You have to make choices which permanently affects the story.

Near the end of the game you have a bunch of super power abilities, I remember a shockwave stomp attack which wrecked enemies.

It was rushed out unpolished, so it had a lot of framerate issues, but I did end up having fun with it. Been over 15 years since I played it, so my memory is fuzzy, but I do remember I was looking forward to a sequel which never came.

We need scalebound, Alice asylum, rainbow 6 patriots, battlefront 3, and half life episode 3 plz 🙏 if not official devs, fans make those games a reality do what cd project red dev said I have to look up the article but if something can't happen themselves then it's up to the fans to make it ourselves.

I played Alice: Madness Returns a couple years ago and it blew me away. What an amazing game and it still holds up. When EA said no to Alice Asylum I was so mad. EA also said something like "Alice is an important IP to us" Yeah, right an important IP that you do nothing with. License it out so we can get that 3rd game from American McGee.

Interesting and pretty solid list but I would day it's Star Wars 1313 that hurts the most in terms of Star War games.

Honorable mentions go to Eight Days, Agent, and Whore of the Orient to name a few.

All of them! But none more than Agent for me, how good a rockstar espionage game could have been! 😭
The getaway too!
