What If The Switch Fails?

Alex S. from Link-Cable writes: "Now let me get one thing out-of-the-way; even if the Switch is a Wii U level failure, Nintendo isn’t going to go bankrupt or become a third-party software so don’t look for things like that in this article, no, for this piece I want to look at scenarios that Nintendo could take in the event of a Switch failure that keep them around, just in a different capacity."

They'd probably drop the hybrid idea and go towards just out-powering others.
They did that once or twice in the past, and while it didn't work for them as well as they hoped, times and gamer mentalities have changed a bit.
Specs wars are the big fanboy contention points for which system "wins a gen" right now. (much as I loath the fact of it, given how shallow it is)
It wouldn't be surprising to see Nintendo go back to that if the current plan doesn't take off like it SHOULD, because that's where the money seems to be congregating.

rjason123474d ago

I'd personally like to see them do both approaches. A conventional one and an unconventional one.

Nintendo wont go back to making powerful home consoles ever again. The Switch is their vision for the future and if it fails (which I doubt) they will go multiplatform and mobile. I see the Switch carving out a nice space for its self though with the unification of their home and handheld consoles into one.

colonel1793473d ago

I wouldn't have any problem if Nintendo went multiplatform. Just imagine a Zelda or Metroid with the power of a PS5/Xbox 4? (Assuming Nintendo goes realisitc again, like the Wii U tech demo).

Ravenor3473d ago

@Colonel179

Twilight Princess came out, you already killed the beautiful Windwaker dream.

EddieNX 3473d ago

As a Nintendo fan, I'm excited about the Switch and I think and hope its going to do well and Keep Nintendo in the hardware business. If not, I will still play the games they released on other platforms. The Switch seems like the most logical thing they could of possibly done so I'm quite optomistic. A platform with all their home and handheld games in one sounds irresistable to me.

_-EDMIX-_3473d ago

Agreed.

I believe then going portable only will allow them to fully focus on supporting one platform as opposed to fragmenting their Market this will allow them to have the most games they've ever produced for a single platform.

It being a hybrid in allowing it to play on the television also allows consumers who are fans of their home consoles to at least have a similar experience.

Because of this I definitely agree with you and I believe that switch is going to be very successful for Nintendo but in the rare off-chance that it is a failure I 100% agree with you that they're going to go multi-platform simply because they gave it their 100% all, they fully focused on their core install base and it just didn't pan out in their favor in that respect I don't see any reason to continue creating Hardware if they're 100% best effort failed, it simply means the market no longer exists for them to be making Hardware.

I think the fact that Nintendo is even making a hybrid as opposed to two platforms very much shows that they're no longer interested in taking risk on creating multiple pieces of hardware and fragmenting their install bases and they're interested to see how they can perform on one unified device.

If everyone on here is all bragging about how Nintendo is making All the Right Moves you should respect this company's wishes if they indeed decide to go third party because we could all come back on here years later and read the comments of people saying how great this move is for Nintendo I don't want to hear people suddenly taking it back and making it sound like they could have done something differently.

If this is indeed the best that Nintendo has ever delivered with a platform there should be no shame if it doesn't perform the way they expected and they go third party.

it simply means that the market share is permanently lost in not enough exist in the market to purchase.

EddieNX 3473d ago

Edmix I totaly agree. The Switch or the Hybrid is Nintendo's destiny why make 2 consoles when you can just make 1. I can see it achieving 50m+ sales lifetime and they'l be fine. I see 10 years of Switch evolution.

Angeljuice3473d ago

@Edmix
Apparently they are already well into development on their new handheld. So much for not fragmenting their market.

That's what I thought they would do having had the jump on others a couple x now. The Switch will struggle simply b/c of the lack of 3rd party support and competition. It is possibly the 4th best home gaming machine and 3rd best mobile machine. If it's sold as a way to play console games on the go, but only offers 1st party and old games, it will have a hard time. Add to that the fact that it's hard to trust them anymore regarding support and they have a tough road ahead.

Honestly, if Sony or MS are not going to invest in a mobile device that also offers a store with free and cheap apps, they might as well create an official app that allows you to play console games anywhere there is a Wi-Fi connection. People are satisfied playing the games we have on the go, and it will only get better as tech gets better. That and Sony's investment in Now could be huge going forward.

Sony could offer a device with Google Play and a DS4 and clip that has access to PS Plus, Now and Vue as well as create exclusive apps for it, and it would be VERY successful AND the key, unlike the Vita is that it's success would not depend on its constant software support. MS could also do it with its own Windows store.

Nintendo may be better off just making software for Sony, MS and PC. I know this is blasphemous to many, but imagine how well Zelda or Mario would sell on these 3? There just may not be room anymore for another console. The competition is fierce and Nintendo isn't willing to take a loss to get ahead, despite their coffers. I have bought every Nintendo console, but the Switch feels too familiar to the WiiU, and I am angry at how it never received proper support . The minute they realized it wouldn't sell like the Wii they abandoned it and everyone who bought it! That's a bad taste to wash out of my mouth!

Angeljuice3473d ago

I don't think people would switch to a Nintendo machine just because it was more powerful than its contemporaries.

Nintendo consoles have a completely different vibe to them than other manufacturers. You can either adopt to their ethos or you can't (personally I have never gelled with Nintendo products).

If the next Nintendo consoles were 20x more powerful than PS4, I still wouldn't consider getting one, not for a split second.

Maybe I'm the exception, I know a lot of people love Nintendo, it's mascots and overpriced novelty plastic toys etc.

I think the switch will do fine however, it is releasing at a better time than the WiiU (the rival manufacturers aren't about to release their next gen machines this time around), and there seems to be quite a buzz about it.

3473d ago
LOL_WUT3473d ago

I would go full on Nintendo if they could pull that off and get most major developers to support them. I've said this before and i'll say it again I would never have to buy another playstation if they did so ;)

DivoJones3473d ago

Well they haven't really done that for a long time.. maybe as far back as N64 or Super NES. They seem to be focused on their family-friendly image, and a quirkly nuance that separates their device from the market competitors. That way they don't feel like they need to 'compete'.. it's why the Wii was under-spec'd compared to say Xbox 360 or PS3. So here's my take.. they either need to do a complete corporate shake-up at the top and adopt a new philosophy, or they need to get out of the home console hardware business. I'm intentionally avoided saying consoles altogether because their portables have been very successful. The Wii had tremendous success because it offered something for everyone to enjoy and had a $200 price point. It also had poor 3rd party support, and that also rings true for the WiiU.. which was a nightmare from nearly every perspective. And right now the Switch sounds like a Nintendo-branded Android tablet with a dock.. I hope it sells well but has the potential to be another shot in the foot.

Where Nintendo really shines is their software. The best titles on all of their platforms are always their first party games.. Mario world, Mario kart, Zelda, Metroid, Animal crossing, Pokemon.. etc. Why not skip the hardware risk and sell on the platforms that ARE trying to compete with each other? PS4 is at roughly 55mil and XB1 probably between 25-30mil.. release software that works on 75mil existing consoles! They could release even just a Mario collection that has Mario 1-3, Super Mario World, and Mario64 on PS4/XB1 and they'd be printing money for years.. people love the classics.

freshslicepizza3473d ago

Nintendo would just head towards mobile and handheld gaming and then come up with its own online service to sell games. They will never support other consoles

bluefox7553473d ago

I'd be happy with them just matching the power of the others, doesn't need to be super powered, but at least close to the current offerings.

conanlifts3473d ago (Edited 3473d ago )

I agree. Having said that the mentality has changed. 3 years ago power was important according to a vocal minority of gamers. Now only the games are important and any console being released with more power is irrelevant.

For me i miss overpowered nintendo consoles. Just look at what nintendo can do with their games on the wii u. Growing up with nintendo it was always their games that made me say "wow, that looks amazing". They impress less with graphics now due to a lack of power. But what they do achieve based on this power is still impressive. So if they released a scorpio for example i think everyone would take notice of their games because they would be mind blowing.

What do you mean "what if"? lol

It's failed already, people just don't realize it yet. Give it a few months after release.

Eonjay3473d ago

Why? Honest question. Because it sounds like people simply refuse to give it a chance at all.

Utalkin2me3473d ago

@Shin-Zantetsuken

Spot on, totally agree.

Ravenor3473d ago

People don't like to have fun.

I'm not saying it will succeed, I'm just not willing to poo poo on it in the hopes they will just go multiplatform like some. For me I'm excited to see Nintendo's Handheld and console devs all working on one device, imagine no more software split between home and handheld?

"People are responding negatively" on here, on the Weaboo's internet turf. Gaf, N4G etc aren't representations of the world and most people who buy games.

InTheLab3473d ago

It is not your job as the consumer to give expensive consoles a chance. Nintendo has failed yet again to produce a console that fits the needs of more than its diehard base who only want Mario, Zelda, etc.

I'm willing to give them a chance when they produce a gimmick free console so that I can play Mario or Mass Effect and not have to worry about of the system is powerful enough tof run it.

Of course Nintendo won't ever listen so no, no people won't give them a chance.

sk8ofmnd3473d ago

I think people have moved on from nintendo. The wii was a sysytem that many nintendo fans like myself hated. Esp after it claimed to offer power and third partys. The wiiu was just nintendo trying to repeat the success of the wii and it blew up in their face. Now we have the switch and while it is a new beginning, consumers will be slow to forget the failure overpriced machine the wiiu was. 1 pricedrop in 4 years is laughable at best. When you can get a ps4 for the price of a wiiu theres something terribly wrong. Its not just the people that lost faith but devs too. Of course right now they might be sworn to dev for it but thats just in case its a runaway success, but if its not... Thats bad news no matter how you slice it.

wonderfulmonkeyman3473d ago (Edited 3473d ago )

"That is exactly why he says it has failed. People are responding negatively to the product that has been proposed and revealed"

Because a 95% positive comment rating on its official reveal trailer and three times the dev support of the Wii U when comparing launch numbers is a negative response./s

Dude, that's a hot load of bullshit and you know it.
It has not already failed, and it is not just Nintendo fanboys that want it.
There are many who hated the last two Nintendo home consoles who now want a Switch, in fact.
Saying it's only the Nintendo fans that want this is a bald-faced lie dreamed up by salty Sony and Microsoft fanboys that can't stand the thought of Nintendo never dropping out of hardware.
Yes, there are some legitimate concerns, but many of them are already alleviated much more than they were during the Wii U's era simply by reports on the Switch being, on the whole, far more positive in tone.
It supports more engines, it has WAY more devs, western especially, that weren't there for the Wii U pledging support, there are a ton of indies that have already confirmed support for the Switch, MANY of the hardware rumors based off of the October kits, and even some from the July kits, have been positive, going back to cartridges is going to offer big advantages, the list keeps going on and on.

It's only the irrational haters and worst of skeptics that have ignored all the positives, and all the cases where hardware didn't determine sales of consoles in the past, that are actually thinking this will flop.
At the bare minimum, the Switch is going to out-do the Wii U.
At its best, we could have another 80 to 100m seller on our hands.
Either way you spin it, that's good for encouraging competition, and for Nintendo.

Goldby3473d ago

@monkeyman

But our concerns are legitimate.
Whats the battery life on the tablet? Whats tha battery life for each of the controllers? How long does it take to charge the controllers vs charging the tablet? Hows the screen for sunlight against it shen you are outside? How hot is the tablet goin to get trying to run UE4 games that make my ps4 sound like a jet engine justbefore takeoff.

These aren't concerns for a aony fanboy. These are the concerns of a gamer who wanted to buy a switch before it went all portable and underpowered.

StraightedgeSES3473d ago

@Shin-Zantetsuken who are the people who responded negatively to the Switch cause it seem to have a positive reaction on other sites

rainslacker3473d ago

I gave them a chance on the WiiU. Was even very positive about how well it could do. 4 years later, they already dropped support for it, and are going another direction, releasing a new console with the WiiU a footnote in Nintendo history.

I like the idea of the console, and it seems intriguing and worth giving a chance, but Nintendo needs to prove itself before I drop money on their new console.

Goldby3470d ago

@eonjay

Theres too many questions right now that are pointing towards doom for it, at least in my eyes.

Say goodbye to playing any future ubisoft game on the go if they continue the online required bs.

Im not saying its going that way, but if they are dling it with a mobile running game, its possible their own might rewuire some check in and that may be an issue if you are on the go.

Battery is another issue

i can't wait to play mario on my PS4

meganick3473d ago

I'd have to disagree. Switch functions as a console but it's also Nintendo's next portable, and all Nintendo's portables have been successful, not counting Virtual Boy since that's not a true portable. And for the first time ever with Switch, ALL Nintendo games next gen will release on only one system instead of two. So even if 3rd parties don't commit strongly, Switch will still get ALOT of Nintendo 1st party games, which will draw a lot of people. Plus it's launching with a big Zelda game. Plus it's just flat out a better idea than Wii U. It's like the fulfillment of what Nintendo wanted the Wii U to be but they just couldn't pull it off in 2012 for whatever reason. I think Switch will sell at least reasonably well, maybe even great, depending on price and game selection.

I'm guessing a mobile focus

They could just be arrogant like normal and keep going until the very end until they are on their last legs

However for me...if times are hard and the only option is those above I'd rather see them go third party and join with Sony. Nintendo is allowed to make the handhelds still while Sony deals with the console side of stuff.

Imagine Smash Bros and Mario Kart with Playstation characters

EddieNX 3473d ago

Mario Kart with Playstation Characters sounds like fresh hell, Drake is not welcome in the Mushroom Kingdom, neither is Knack.

KickSpinFilter3473d ago

Drake cuz of the guns and Knack because of all the particle effects. No can do on a Nintendo platform. lol

Ravenor3473d ago

Yeah imagine smash bros with Killzone guy, Kratos and Polygon Head ohhh yay.

It's hilarious you would label Sony as the place to go.

InTheLab3473d ago

Umm Ratchet, clank, Jake, Daxter, Sly Cooper. Why ignore those guys? And where else would Nintendo fit?

Ravenor3473d ago

Anywhere Nintendo wants to fit if that's the decision they make, there is nothing about Sony that says it's more or less the fit for Nintendo.

gangsta_red3473d ago

"It's hilarious you would label Sony as the place to go."

Agreed. Smash Bros work because the characters themselves are iconic and timeless.

Nintendo doesn't need to 'fit' anywhere and if they did I would say Nintendo should unify their Triforce team (Sega, Namco, Nintendo) and form one super company out of it.

That would be slobber worthy.

feraldrgn3473d ago (Edited 3473d ago )

If they fail then they'll probably dedicate their resources on gaming handhelds, because they pretty much own that market.

Oh & I hope if they fail with the Switch that they DON'T focus on Mobile.
