Resident Evil's Change Of Perspective Matters

Horror gaming's most famous series is going ‘first-person’. Expect a significant difference.

Limbrick3440d ago (Edited 3440d ago )

Play of the RE7 demo in fp has seemed natural to me. I never once wished for a 3rd person option or felt dizzy. The fov does not feel too narrow and i did not notice nausea producing head/body bobbing. Tight spaces are better for me in fp view.

Right now i am switching between Skyrim and Mafia 3. I never think that i wish Mafia was fp and Skyrim is always in fp even though it has an excellent feature for 3rd person view. Driving or flying? Give me 3rd person please.

I think it's interesting that the developers of Resi 7 are attempting to translate 'old-school' survival horror mechanics, and the series' own early classic touches (storage boxes, cryptic puzzles, saving by interacting with specific objects) into the modern first-person view of contemporary horror games.

Demo felt natural to me too. For me, above and beyond perspective, it's whether Resi 7 captures the SPIRIT of classic Resident Evil that I'm interested in. From developer interviews and preview footage, it certainly looks as though they've got a good chance of doing that.

“First-person tends to work best in games that are all about immediacy, or that work with a restricted vision, as with horror. Third person tends to promote a slightly more measured style of play afforded by a less restricted view.”

Yeah let's pretend that fixed camera angles never did that at all. Other than that, I fully agree with Jamie Madigan that execution is much more important and neither perspective never had more edge than the next.

Jurat3438d ago

I played the demo in my PSVR headset; truly nerve wracking, but the sense of presence is unbelievable. Not sure I could play through the whole game that way, but this is a day one purchase for me.

G20WLY3438d ago

Me too. Try playing it on the TV afterwards though and it rips the sense of dread right out of the game once you've used VR. VR is just SO MUCH more immersive and there's no way I'll play this on TV now.

If I need more breaks and can't steam straight through the game, that's fine by me if I'm getting more from the experience. I certainly got a sweat on just with the demo alone lol

Jurat3438d ago

Yeah, VR does definitely add a unique quality Play standing up and the immersion becomes so intense, it starts to feel dreamlike. I'm actually considering buying one of those 4D candles for launchday...

G20WLY3438d ago

Haha! That's awesome, thanks - I never even knew about that.

Of course, it screams gimmick, but it's a cool idea and I might just give it a go to see for myself!

Game came out in 2017 . I expect the newer console to at least match or be better than the older ones .

Snookies1296d ago (Edited 96d ago )

It's still a great looking game though. Just because it came out years ago doesn't mean it's not demanding. I just started playing it on PC and with maxed out graphics. It really holds up well to current games.

Stevonidas96d ago

PS4 PSU = 250 watts (base model)
PS5 PSU = 220 watts
Switch 2 = 22 watts (docked)

Crazy efficiency from Switch 2.

Deathdeliverer96d ago

I don’t know who keeps posting this guy. The switch does NOT match the PS5 performance. Please put digital foundry vids instead. It beats series S visually. The beginning of the video shows the car hood example. The upscaler is pixelated as hell on switch but smooth, but less detailed on PS4 and not even on PS5s league. That’s the upscaler trying to make 540p look higher res. I really don’t understand the reasoning for the gas lighting.

Neonridr96d ago (Edited 96d ago )

what are you even talking about? where do you get 540p? The game is rendering at 1080p and then upscaling to 4k on the TV.

are you somehow confusing this analysis with Requiem?

repsahj96d ago

Even if it comes from 240p, I don't have a problem with it. What matters is the end result. RE7, 8, and 9 are very detailed on the Switch 2 in docked and handheld mode.

Neonridr96d ago

it says on the video 4k from a base 1080p. Where do you get 540p from?

Benjaminkno95d ago

He’s referring to “native” output and ignoring the upscaling. 90% of these nintendon’ts clamored for a “better performing switch” only to pretend it’s not what they asked for. If they were to play this game without seeing hair, they couldn’t tell the difference.

Neonridr94d ago

@Benjaminkno - I think this person is thinking of Requiem, which was using a base 540p. Clearly they can't read.

Well at least there are games like angry birds or clash of clans for mobile gamers :-)

Cacabunga688d ago

Good it flopped.. they must have realized that the target audience is totally different

ABizzel1688d ago

This is a win for gaming even if it’s not an ideal experience on iPhone yet:

1. It’s a huge step forward for mobile gaming showing in the next 2 - 4 years this will be a solid 720p@30fps experience for AA / AAA PS4-PS5 quality games on a device we carry with us everywhere.

2. It’s a huge step forward for Apple gaming in general which has been underwhelming for years running NATIVELY and flawlessly on any M2 / M3 / M4 iPad and MacBook. At worst 900p@60fps Medium-High Settings + Metal on the M2 iPad, 1440p@60 - 80fps Max settings on the M3 Pro Max which is equivalent to a RTX 4060 / RX 6700XT, so slightly above console settings…..but in a $3000 - $4000 laptop (Apple and they’re ridiculous prices).

3. But most important for all of us, it shows what the future of mobile platforms like the Switch 2 will be capable of and ports like RE7, RE Village, and RE4 Remake should be lined up for the Switch 2, optimized even more for mobile PC like SteamDeck / ROG, and eventually Android based platforms.

OtterX689d ago

Who the hell would want to play this on a phone?

ABizzel1688d ago

The iPhone version won’t be good for another 2 years (iPhone 18) or so when they have their next fabrication node (2nm), so they can hopefully improve the CPU cores (AA/AAA games will need 3 or 4 performance cores instead of 2), add 2 more GPU cores, and improve memory bandwidth with LPDDR6.

Then it should be a stable 720p - 900p resolution, @ locked 30fps, Medium-High Settings, with better Type-C out for larger displays.

KwietStorm_BLM689d ago

Apple users ain't gamers. I don't know whether this push with "metal" was just to say they did it and it's possible to run modern games, or if Capcom just said hey more units is better, but either way this shouldn't be all that surprising.

ChasterMies689d ago

You say that but everyime I’m waiting for one of my kids’ events to start, I see an audience full of kids playing games on phones. No Nintendos. Just phones. Lots of Minecraft. Lots of Clash of Clans style games.

jwillj2k4688d ago

Roblox as well. Gigantic mega platform. Kids can’t get enough of it. Sony/Nintendo would be wise to integrate more with their platform as kids get older.

KwietStorm_BLM688d ago

Playing clash of clans doesn't make you a *gamer.* Most mobile games are designed to literally be time wasters and money pits. They're for casuals who don't actually have a gaming platform. Kids on phones today is just a symptom of the modern era. Doesn't mean gaming is what they're really into, as proven by those sales numbers.

Goodguy01689d ago (Edited 689d ago )

Mobile gamers only want simple games and gachas. Nobody wants to pay up front for a mobile game, you have to hide it behind micro transactions lol.

Androids hardware is so fragmented

Sgt_Slaughter689d ago (Edited 689d ago )

But has enough models that outpace the iPhone that it would be a much better showcase of how AAA games could run on mobile. Not to mention the entire east Asian mobile market.
