As for Dark Souls Blighttown (Demon's Souls had something similar) you can actually bypass that providing you have the "key" as your gift. You will get poisoned but if you have enough Estus flasks that is not a real problem. Now Zen's Fortress is a different matter but if you take it slow and steady it's not that hard.
Its possible to avoid Blightown completely. Theres nothing of much value apart from a couple of pick-ups. Also its not too bad when you are levelled up a bit. The Valley of Defilement in Demons Souls was much worse.
