Final Fantasy XV is the Evolution the Series Needed

It took 10 years, but Final Fantasy 15 has arrived and is the redemption the series needed. Not all fans agree, and with the recent announcement of a year's worth of DLC plans, it's clear that there are rough edges. But what's also clear is that big changes needed to happen. This is exactly the kind of evolution the series needed to stay relevant.

Vantol3441d ago

Community reaction (those, who actually completed the game, and not "2 hours into it and like it" beg to differ. 13-15 is steady degradation at best.

ninsigma3441d ago

12 and 13 was degradation. While 15 isn't perfect and certainly not the best in the series, it is a much better product than 13. It's at the very least an improvement from 12 and 13.

Bimkoblerutso3441d ago

I'll never understand the 12 hate. I think it's because the story and characters (mostly) threw out the melodrama that the franchise is known for and focused more on fantasy politics, but I freaking loved that about the game. Plus Balthier, Fran, Basch and Ashe are some of the most interesting main characters in all of the franchise in my opinion...but, you know...they never all fell in love with each other or shared any romantic scenes in a pool, so no fans of the franchise really remember them.

Plus, XV feels like a product of it's open-world genre, through and through, for better or worse. I still like it a lot (and I agree that it's definitely better than 13), but I'll never subscribe to this trend among gamers to declare that a bigger, open world automatically adds value or relevance to a game.

60 hours in and I'm still in love with it.

Community reaction says that the community isn't unified in its reaction, not for this nor for any other title. Nothing more.

I was loving the game at first, but last night I did a boss battle that was essentially a very easy series of quick-time events, you would never get anything like that in a previous FF game, boss battles required tactics you might even fail the first couple of tries or at least have to phoenix down defeated team members. Also being able to spam items with no penalty makes pretty much all encounters I've had so far trivial.

Also having a big chuck of the story in a separate movie was a terrible idea, by all means make a cool spin off movie based on the game world, but watching Kingsglaive is pretty important to understanding whats going on in the game.

ninsigma3441d ago

Yeah the combat isn't very difficult and it doesn't let you fail very often. Pretty sure I only game overed twice in the whole game and that was only because once at the beginning because I was still learning the system and trying different things and then again on the last boss because I wasn't paying attention. I did find the fighting fun but yeah not very challenging.

Lennoxb633441d ago (Edited 3441d ago )

Combat in FF has never been that difficult so I don't know what you mean.

Perjoss3441d ago

Don't know what I mean? In XV you can spam healing items with no delay, in previous games using a healing item or healing skill would take up a turn in combat, so you had to choose when to heal and when to defend, attack or cast spells etc.

I don't see how a delay in healing your character makes THAT much of a difference. I was fine healing my character throughout boss battles or otherwise. Maybe if you don't know what you're doing it can be difficult. But experienced RPG players know what's up.

Tdmd3440d ago

Considering that you can regen really fast just by hidding or warping to somewhere safe, not having a delay in healing doesn't make any difference at all, imo.

ninsigma3441d ago

I see it more the improvement it needed rather than the evolution. I think the evolution is still to come. It's better than the previous offerings but there is still work to do with the next title. The game is fun to play. The combat is good albeit a bit simplistic. While the characters aren't the best main cast in an ff game, they were still interesting and I liked them. The world was great to explore as well with some fun things to do. It has the bones of what could be a great story but at times it just didn't seem to make sense or felt like there were bits missing. Then there was chapter 13. Man I was so happy when it ended. It felt like ff13 all over again and it just dragged on and on. Overall the game was enjoyable. I spent over 50 hours on it and that is something I rarely do in a game. Personally I give it an enjoyment score of 8.

Six Times When Games Turned Into A Horror Game

Ever play a game a game only to discover at some point it transforms into a horror game? No? Well Netto's Game Room shares six games that do just that!

Immediately thought of the El Dorado zombie dudes in Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune.

raWfodog386d ago (Edited 386d ago )

Not necessarily a ‘horror’ moment, but I remember feeling really tense and anxious when the Flood were first introduced in the original Halo. I never felt more on edge or nervous in that whole game as that moment. I think it was the whole buildup that something terrible was coming but you didn’t know exactly what.

Another non-horror game that had me feeling it was Subnautica. The deep dark depths, and knowing that sea monsters were lurking nearby, had me jumping at every sound.

NettosGameRoom386d ago

That scene where you first see them attack is pretty crazy!

Relientk77386d ago

I remember being scared of the Asylum level in the most recent Thief game from 2014.

always liked 15, but the development was shch a shitshow. it could have been so much more.

but Tabata did a good job with what he had regardless

DivineHand125521d ago

Ff15 was a missed opportunity from square as they transitioned from turn based to real time.

One of the issues is that it was 30 fps. The combat mechanics required precision dodges to activate Noctis teleport ability and it was difficult to do at 30 fps. I am glad they rectified that in FF16. The story and flow also felt like it went through a chopshop similar to how some live service games end up when they are trying to meet a deadline. Those extra episodes they sold as dlc should have been in the maingame.

FF15 is one of the weaker entries in the series.

Z501520d ago

Dodges don't activate the teleport ability. Teleport was R1 + O. Dodge was just the O button. Explain the Black Hood (the item that automatically Dodges for you)

TheNamelessOne521d ago

Ah yes; FF XV.
The beginning of me coming to the realization the series was no longer for me.

Michiel1989520d ago

16 was a lot better, I think 15 was just a big mess with how development went and all. The music though, one of the best in the series, probably the only reason I finished the game.

Cacabunga520d ago

At least FF15 had RPG elements . 16 was just an action game from beginning to end.

Michiel1989520d ago

I rather have a good action game than a bad rpg with 2 button combat

Cacabunga520d ago (Edited 520d ago )

Then call it something else then FF. I got scammed with FF16. Nothing of what i expected it to be.
Even the action is bad in it, especially after the demo section where absolutely nothing happens until the very end.

FF15 isnt a great game but it has some variety at least.

CrimsonWing69521d ago

That initial trailer with the Leviathan fight was the game I wish we got. The actual retail release was watchdogged to all Hell and while there’s enjoyment to be had in the game, it’s such an incomplete product and so many elements feel so slapped together without any cohesion.

Like, don’t get me wrong, I loved fishing, cooking, and the first third of the game, but I much rather they made a story that didn’t feel barely there and the the last third of the game didn’t feel so rushed and unfinished.

Becuzisaid520d ago

Every time a party member left for a period of time screamed future paid dlc. It was horrible.

Imagine Dagger and Steiner making the party go to sleep in Lindblum in FF9 disc 1 and then taking off to Alexandria by foot themselves, but then never playing their side of the adventure in disc 2 when they smuggle her through the South Gate in pickles, take the cable car and fight the Waltz, head to Treno and start the quest to find Supersoft. They just eventually reunite with the main party in the future without explanation of what went on in their adventure.

Or Sephiroth's backstory in the famous Kalm flashback being added as a dlc pack. Same goes for Vincent, Cid, or Yuffie for that matter.

Oh and anything to do with Jenova, the Ancients, Aerith, her mom and Gast, shoved into a 2 hour CG movie or 5 hour anime ministries that's considered required viewing for anything in the main game to make sense or have characters actually be interesting.

I enjoyed FF15 at the time, and finished it, but it's bright spots are marred by a bad development cycle and a worse marketing scheme.

CrimsonWing69520d ago

What’s sad is when I watched a vid on the entire story (that wasn’t properly told in the actual game)!it was really solid and could’ve been one of the most epic stories in any FF. I think a lot of the compilation and cross-media stuff really f*cked it all up.

gurp521d ago

FFXV was underrated in my opinion
I have played all of the final fantasy games, and I loved this game
turn based to me takes too long, I like active battle
the extra dlc and chapters should have been included in the original release, but it is nice that they fixed the game later

Glad that I absolutely can't stand subscription services.

Petebloodyonion772d ago (Edited 772d ago )

I don't recall Sony forcing you to subscribe like nobody forced you to go to Blockbuster to rent games instead of buying them.

SonyStyled772d ago

Pay-per-view was almost cheaper than the cost of gas and rental fee from Blockbuster. Blockbuster doesn’t exist today. Are you being sarcastic?
