Its idiosyncratic design is as delightful as ever and the developer's knack for capturing the essence of 8-bit gaming purity is once again evident. If this were a full-price purchase, we'd undoubtedly bemoan the game's overall lack of substance – and certainly, it makes far more sense as a companion piece within the upcoming Darwinia+ bundle for Xbox Live. We are still waiting for the Tolstoy-esque war game where, by and large, instructions must be issued prior to engagement and may turn out to be irrelevant due to unforeseen events, where orders handed over to a messenger during the heat of the battle may be struck down by a stray musket shot before they are ever received. You know what gets closest? Multiwinia. Honest.
