Any device that runs software can get a virus. It's just that it's more difficult to write such a virus for some devices than it is for others, and unless there are 100's of millions of them out in the wild then it's probably not worth the effort.

The only way the PS4 can get a virus is if someone bypass all 50+ layers of Sony's security and then on top of that write a virus program for the PS4 software using the root key, then hacking all 50plus layers to the PSN itself to write a PS4 update that has the virus embedded and then push that update to the PSN services layer that has to be approved from Yoshida-san himself before going on the production floor. So the hacker will have to hack Yoshida-san and all 50+ of his security layers to then give the update the go ahead for production. So in short... no the PS4 cannot get a virus. This is why they patched Linux in the PS3 because Linux wasn't secure and left the PS3 open to viral attacks.

Dude every program is sandboxed, even the webkit have its own sandbox.

@C-H-E-F:

None of that is necessary. A simple browser scripting attack could load a virus into the system. It just needs to be digitally signed so that the system recognizes it as official software. Hackers have spoofed the sigs before on both the PS3 and PSP. Not sure if they have access to them yet on the PS4, but it is technically possible.

@C-H-E-F

All their security just means it's difficult, and therefore improbable given the (relatively) small install base. But all complex software contains bugs, and bugs can lead to security holes.

I've been responsible for system level security reviews to find potential holes, and I'd never make the claim that any system is hack proof. If it's connected to anything then it's a target, and given enough time and effort someone will find a way in.

I'd be quicker asking that question towards the 360 since Internet Explorer came to it a year before the launch of Xbone. Actually come to think of it, the Edge browser for Xbone is essentially Internet Explorer 12, yuk.

Short answer, no, no on any games console.

I hope not. But you can bet your ass there are people trying...

A good start would be to release games to go with the console. My Xbox Series X has gathered dust virtually from launch. My advice would be to ditch a next console and release games on PC, PlayStation and Switch. Another idea would be a hybrid console based on Xbox Series X tech and go the same route as Nintendo. Another idea would be to pull out of gaming altogether. Plenty of options there.

Why would they pull out? They have the momentum. Sony has been getting nothing but bad news lately.
