Processing Power Is Going To Be A Factor For Nintendo Switch Third Party Support- Michael Pachter

The Nintendo Switch seems to have a truly impressive lineup of third party developers and publishers, all of whom appear to be legitimately excited to support the system. However, the one fear that a lot of Nintendo fans may have is that the system does get a lot of support upfront, but that that support then dies later on, because supporting the Switch requires too much extra resources and development time, without necessarily getting the returns on that investment.

Hey Michael. Its been a while since you last set he internet ablaze. Welcome back. The Switch is more powerful than the Wii U. Thats for sure. And another thing: Being less powerful than the PS4 never stopped 3rd parties from making games on the Xbox One S. Didn't stop the PS2 when the GameCube and Xbox One were more powerful. Hell it didn't stop the Wii.

Microsoft's inferiority complex has rubbed off on everyone and now everyone is obsessed with power. I have seen more Switch/Scorpio articles focused on power than actual games.

You don't have to worry about 3rd party support for Switch. it will be there because Nintendo will engage developers.

"You don't have to worry about 3rd party support for Switch. it will be there because Nintendo will engage developers."

You have absolutely no facts to back up your statement. It's really just conjecture, not sure why you think the Switch will magically bring back 3rd party developers when the device clearly won't be heavily competing with the PS4 and XB1.

I do think that the Switch is a good move by Nintendo, but the jury is out on whether it will restore Nintendo's reputation in the gaming industry and community.

Actually we already know Ubisoft is working with Nintendo. We also know that Bethesda and 2k are on board as well. Why would anyone believe that Nintendo isn't actively working for 3rd party support? Square Enix is said to be working on some titles as well. We will get the full scoop soon.

Nintendo often loses 3rd party support because the systems are so much different to develop on with a smaller base. They are so low powered in comparison to the competition that it actually costs more to develop on Nintendo consoles or is not cost effective, in addition to ending up with a less quality result to a smaller base of users. It's not worth having to re-optimize and/or port and strip down an entire game engine that was built and spec'd to be at one level so that it can "make due" at a bare minimum on a Nintendo machine. Theres no money or glory in that. Bethesda has already voiced concerns about their software running on the Switch and it hasn't even launched yet.

Nice potshot at Scorpio, but I'm pretty sure people were talking about the lack of power and it's impact on 3rd party support for Nintendo since 2006.

Lack of power did stop 3rd party support on the Wii. It's popularity didn't translate to AAA parity like we saw in the PS2/GCN days. Sure "Let's Dance" titles and similar 3rd party games were there, but the 3rd party support was not even in the same category as 360/PS3. This was all due to the lack of power of the Wii.

Wii U suffered from a lack of relative power, poor sales, and poor development resources. Bad combination for 3rd party support. People are right to be concerned that a lack of power could, at least in part, hold back 3rd parties. Hopefully it's API allows for easy porting and developing, and it has enough juice to at least run scaled down versions of mainstream multiplats.

"Nice potshot at Scorpio, but I'm pretty sure people were talking about the lack of power..."

Thats all people are talking about. Its Group thought and I wont participate. Lets talk about what games are gonna sell this thing. People are acting like it will have no 3rd party support even though we know that it already does.

You guys are all insane.

ShottyatLaw3463d ago

"... lack of power and it's impact on 3rd party support for Nintendo since 2006."

Finish the quote...the two go hand in hand. Games that will sell the Switch include the same AAA 3rd party releases that sell people on PS4s, X1s, and PCS. Nintendo games aren't enough for mainstream success IMO.

Final Fantasy XV and VII will sell this thing, especially in Japan. Can it run them? That is the valid question that follows.

Having the most powerful console isn't important at all; having a console powerful enough to allow for third party development parity is definitely one of the most important things in the success of a console.

Xbox One S and PS2 are / were still on the same level as their counterparts in their respective console generations, meaning they could still get all the big AAA ports without much issue.

Your Wii example is way off-base. Wii didn't get any of the big AAA games that 360 and PS3 got. It didn't get Mass Effect, BioShock, Red Dead Redemption, Grand Theft Auto, etc, and many of the multiplatform games it got were either pretty casual party games (Just Dance, Rayman), or underperforming ports that weren't comparable to the HD releases (Call of Duty). So, it got a few notable exclusive games (Red Steel 2, Tatsunoko vs. Capcom, etc), a lot of superb Nintendo games, and a ungodly amount of third party shovelware crap games.

Both Wii and Wii U ultimately suffered of lack of important third party support because both consoles were heavily underpowered compared to the competition.

I don't know what Nintendo's plan with the Switch will ultimately be, but Pachter is right: if you want to have proper third party support, your console has to be up to par in power to allow it. It doesn't need to be the most powerful of the bunch, just powerful enough.

I think Nintendo's plans with the Switch may be different, and they're betting on a strong first party output by focusing all of their development efforts on the Switch alone instead of fracturing it on two platforms, and also getting the usual japanese third party support that their handheld consoles always get. If that's the case and it's priced right, it can and most probably will be successful even if it doesn't get much AAA third party support.

Ubisoft, square Enix, ea etc all supported the wii u early on. The issue is they mostly did ports of old games. Bethesda is offering skyrim..but every xbox, ps4 and pc owner already has access to this old game. So a list of developers is great. But without a list of new and upcoming games, with ongoing support, its basically pointless.

I think Sales is the number one factor for third party developers.

jonivtec3463d ago

Yep....more than power actually.

QSPR3463d ago

Wii says hi... remember Wii sell more units than 360 or PS3, how that ends??

Pancit_Canton3463d ago

It did pretty good. It sold over 100 million units and it was supported with a lot of 3rd party developers, including shovelware developers and popular ones like; SE, CAPCOM, KONAMI, and more.

Liqu1d3463d ago

Gee, thanks Captain Obvious.

Tussin1873463d ago

Well, it's really up to the customers. If they don't buy 3rd party games then there will be a problem. These companies won't waste their time and money if no one buys their games. Hopefully the power difference isn't too big and the Switch can get some quality ports. Otherwise, history is just going to repeat itself. I'm in no way bashing the system and I hope it turns out great as Nintendo likes to do things differently (and that's fine) but it usually comes at the price of power. Power is not everything but when your not even close to the competition then it becomes one. 3rd parties then have to make huge sacrifices just to get the game to run on the system if even at all. Hopefully, things will be a little different this time but I still have that uneasy feeling. Hopefully when they fully reveal this thing, they can change my mind. Come on Nintendo, please surprise us!!! You've had this same 3rd party issue since the N64. Time to wake up!!!

Btw, I know this is N4g and I'm not saying Nintendo has/had no 3rd party support but it's nowhere close to Sony or MS. That's what I'm trying to say. We've heard this song and dance before. 3rd parties praise the system at first and then after awhile the 3rd party support dries up. If I'm wrong in this assumption then please respond and maybe I can learn something that I didn't know before. January needs to hurry up because I'm tired of all this secrecy. Happy gaming and holidays people.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio40d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing40d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9240d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit40d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing40d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9240d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse

Take-Two CEO Once Again Side Steps Grand Theft Auto 6 Price Point

Strauss Zelnick says price of GTA 6 is being carefully considered and that Rockstar is focused on "making the most spectacular piece of entertainment on Earth."

Kuma41d ago

If GTA 6 abandons everything that made GTA 5 great, it will crash and burn right out of the gate. GTA 5 was funny and not at all PC. My worry is that they will cave to the PC crowd and ruin the vibes.

Eonjay41d ago

They got freaking BBLs twerking on the top of trucks for the gram, the freaking Flordia joker, and dude running down the stree in their undies and you are worried about it being 'too PC'? The internet has runied gamers. It doesn't matter how non-PC they make the game, you will all listen to the grifters telling you not to believe your lying eyes lol.

gigoran841d ago

"Rockstar Games’ co-founder and former VP of Development Jamie King said he envisions GTA 6 as a game that’s “maybe not quite as edgy or quite as funny” as its satirical predecessors."

oh yeah, totally internet grifters spreading rumors...

blacktiger41d ago

That's part of the plan, they destroyed you but they need to destroy the shareholders? Only 1 shre holder is the true elite that don't care

1nsomniac41d ago (Edited 41d ago )

Meh.., if it’s above £55 I ain’t buying it.

Rockstar are genuinely not half the company they used to be. I was a die hard GTA fan I’ve purchased every game and expansion and spin off day 1.

My opinion of GTA6 is that I can take it or leave it. Not bothered. They burnt too many bridges.

DaReapa41d ago (Edited 41d ago )

So they're actually leaving the door open for an L.A. Noire sequel? Nice!

VaNdAl41d ago (Edited 41d ago )

He should just come out and say it already it's getting stupid it's going to be a 100 bucks $200 for the special edition🤡🤡; 29315;🤣♿

Storm2341d ago

I won't be getting this game until I can get it for $70. SHoot, I could wait for it to be even lower. I don't need the game that badly as my backlog is still huge and I am enjoying playing other things.
