Resident Evil 7 Teaser: Beginning Hour – Have Capcom brought the horror back?

Carlos writes "Resident Evil fans are a tough crowd to please; I should know, because I’m one of the biggest fans there is. But just because we can be a tough bunch, it doesn’t mean Capcom can’t do the right thing and give the fans that one thing they have been begging for over the last several years – to return the series to its roots as the home of horror."

It's absolutely going back to the genre it should be.

naruga3455d ago (Edited 3455d ago )

they are far from it ...they have alienated the IP completely with this PT/Outlast FPS transformation ....i hope the game to be huge flope in order to really get a grip and REALLY return the series to classic formula not only in visual/mechanics but in theme also ...these paranormal/psychological hillibillies are ridiculous as f...k

LamerTamer3455d ago (Edited 3455d ago )

I half agree. While I like the perspective as it is way more immersive and scary than the fixed camera and clunky tank controls of the first ones, the invincible hillbillies are a stretch. It is too Alien Isolation-y for me. I wish it was more about zombies like the first.

I think the whole thing in the Baker's house should have just been a segment rather than the focus. That way the object could be to fight to escape then move on. That would have made more sense than people who could withstand being continually shot without dying.

I played the demo and it was definitely scary/un-nerving I will likely still buy it. I don't have VR but I can only imagine how scary that would be.

Fishy Fingers3455d ago (Edited 3455d ago )

Changed or not, it's the most interesting Resident Evil since 4.

Damned if you do and damned if you don't. Can't make everyone happy but i personally commend them for trying something 'new'.

quent3455d ago

Except for the flopping part I completely agree that their pandering to the PT/Outlast crowd, but them flopping won't help, not just because a lot of peoples jobs are on the line, Capcom games have flopped in the past and that didn't stop them from riding the "what's popular" train(RE5,6) trying to boost sales.

RE the ones we loved will never happen again, because of its self awareness, campy ness and OTT voice acting with survival elements, RE4 changed that, because of how good it was at what it did, it was a one trick pony, because Capcom tried to do that 2 more time by just adding more "cinematic" elements.

The same people who decides the series's direction are still there, still filling the same role, RE7 is the other side of the RE6 coin, a very shiny good looking coin from afar that's very appealing to a specific group of people...

but not for those who loved the older titles, I'm fine with that though, will be getting RE 2,3 RM and die a happy RE Fan.

danglyparts3455d ago

Aside from it being first person, and you occasionally hiding from stuff, it's nothing like Outlast/PT. It has everything that makes the original RE titles great, aside from fixed camera angles and tank controls.

It is a bit different, but the difference is a good one. Not like the crap we got from the last 2 installements

PlatinumGX3455d ago

Can't be horror if the game is not scary.

datriax3455d ago

Huh. Who knew? There's already plenty of Resident Evil movies before the Paul Anderson crap ones. For some reason they were called Texas Chainsaw Massacre though. I guess this game is a throwback to those good old movies.

nub_cakes1013455d ago

It has a lot of potential. I don't understand the haters, personally I thought the demo was great

I loved RE7, especially in VR. However for me it'll have to be God of War for GOTG

-Foxtrot2204d ago

Urm...no

Wouldn't even make the top 10

Resident Evil 2 Remake was better anyway

Concertoine2202d ago

It depends on how much stock you put in it being basically the first AAA VR game, the first solid VR horror experience, and it being the beginning of RE returning to the more old school nonlinear gameplay.

The game was good, my problem is that just when it starts to border on more than good, it ditches that metroid-y design that made the older games so satisfying to figure out. Also, the puzzles and enemies suck compared to the classic RE's.

I would also say RE 2 remake would be my preference, but the puzzles also still suck in that game.

kungfuian2204d ago (Edited 2204d ago )

RE7 in VR is as much like being in a lucid nightmare as it is playing a game. Nothing like it! Easily earns a spot in the top 5.

That said I'd still have to give the crown to Bloodborne! Nothing comes close to the level design, atmosphere, and overall immersion of that game.

Honorable mentions to Breath of the Wild for its amazing open world physics sandbox gameplay and sense of exploration, and Horizon for its gorgeous world, satisfying bow and arrow combat, and incredible enemy design.

Poopmist2203d ago

Solid game but not close to GOTG. I'd go with Witcher 3 for that. Ghosts or Cyberpunk have a chance to maybe take that spot though.

Nacho_Z2202d ago

Agreed about Resi 7 and good shouts for the others, I think Cyberpunk is going to be amazing.

At this point though Bloodborne is the GotG for me.

xenz2202d ago

Bloodborne... really?

2202d ago
PurpHerbison2202d ago

Agree on Bloodborne being GotG.

Nacho_Z2202d ago

@ xenz

Yep really, it's an incredible game if you enjoy the genre. Something genuinely special that comes along very rarely.

What would you put forwards?

PurpHerbison2202d ago

I'd imagine a lot of people powered through the game only concerning themselves with gameplay, and if that is the case then I can see how someone might not consider it. But if you go into the game and really pay attention to what it has to offer it is easily GotG. The lore alone in that game absolutely dismantles every other game out there.

EDKICK2203d ago

I mean I can see why people love it, especially in VR but I don't think it's even close to the best stealth horror game this gen. The last third or so really bring the game down imo.

Tacoboto2202d ago

It felt so tonally different compared to the earlier parts of the game. Maybe VR's GotG, preceding Half-Life Alyx.
