The Pro branding was used last gen with the 360. At launch there was an Xbox 360 Core and the higher priced Xbox 360 Pro. The Core SKU was later called the Arcade, the Pro became a mid tier label when the Xbox 360 Elite was released. What Playstation fans associate today with a high end SKU, Xbox fans see as lower tier. Calling Scorpio an Xbox One Pro would definitely be confusing to Xbox fans. Xbox One Elite would be more fitting if Microsoft wants to recycle names.

Personally I am fine with Scorpio. The appeal will be with hardcore Xbox fans anyway and they are most likely already aware of the console. Being what Microsoft calls a "premium" product, I don't believe they are targeting a mass market like Sony is with their Pro.

What's funny is MS has already made an Xbox One Elite, I own one. I feel like they could follow the mentality of Sony and name is something like Xbox One Plus, but I wouldn't name it Pro just like Sony did. If it happened the way I want it, they would just call it the Microsoft Xbox going forward.

I believe each console should have its own name / identity. Sega never named a system consecutively like Sony has done. Sony is doing what Atari did with 2600, 5200, 7800 and even Nintendo tries to name their systems differently. If Ms is going to name this xbox 'something' then it should be reflective of being different than the 'one' and not something lame like 'two'.

you always have your platform name then your console name. Playstation (platform) 1, 2, 3, 4 (console). Xbox (platform) 360, one, scorpio (console). Nintendo is a weird one because their name is the platform and the company behind it while both Sony and MS are the companies behind their platforms of PS and XB. Sega was like nintendo with their name being the platform. SEGA (platform) Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast (console)

you get the idea.

The Xbox Scorpio is part of the Xbox one ecosystem. They're not goign to change the Xbox one brand. I see a lot of confused consumers already here on N4G...lol.

Well you and the OP have good points, consumers are familiar with 'pro' branding and what it generally includes. BUT at the same time, Microsoft will probably not want to give the impression that the upgrade from PS4 to PS4 pro is the same as the upgrade from Xbox One S to the Scorpio. It has higher specs and the ultra-HD blu-ray drive, which the PS4 pro doesn't have. They've already had an Elite variation of the Xbox One as well with the 1TB SSHD and the elite controller bundled, so for those reasons I'm going to rule out Pro and Elite. Someone below mentioned dropping the One, but that would cause customer confusion on whether it's a new platform or not.. so here's the names I can foresee them going with.
Xbox One 4K
Xbox One Ultimate or Ultra .. my money is on Ultra.

Day one purchase for sure.

This is the 4th holiday we have had with the new consoles. How many of those games have released and do you think Microsoft isn't making any more new games? There is no doubt Sony has a more diverse library of first party games, but don't think for a minute it's not there core library that gamers look forward to the most. This gen Microsoft has hit with more of those core franchises while Sony focused on subscription services and VR.

When you get days like yesterday when you see footage from incredible games like Death Stranding, and then you see Days Gone and Horizon gameplay it makes you wonder why anyone actually got an Xbox One 😂 there really is no competition in terms of quality of games this gen between the two.

Half of your list hasn't came out yet....nor do they have release dates.
It's been 4 years and they only launched how many new AAA ips? 4?
Ryse, sunset, QB....and recore. While they have 3 halos like 6 forzas, and 2 gears....yes repetitive is the word.....I mean at least drop a rpg. Can't see how you guys sit here and defend that. Look at gears sells.....just all bad..its a wayyyy better game than judgment ever was and is one of the best this year in gaming. ..but sold nothing.

Why would Microsoft even recognize the PlayStation Pro by calling their own device the pro? That actually leads consumers to believe that their decisions are in part made based on what Sony does which actually makes the Sony product sound Superior and the Microsoft product an imitation.

Just because it plays Xbox one games doesn't mean its an x1. Ps2 and ps3 played it's predecessors' games. It's not a next gen console,but it's also not just a mid gen upgrade either.

Well it wouldn't be so confusing if MS would come out and say if it's a new gen machine or not. Phil got asked the question and really didn't give a straight answer. Being part of the same family doesn't mean jack. All systems that come out from a manufacturer are part of the same family.

Sony was clear that the Pro is not next gen. MS has not been clear. That's the difference. Just because it can play X1 games doesn't mean it's the same as the Pro. I don't understand how hard this is for people to understand.

So until MS becomes CLEAR on what it actually is then people are going to keep arguing. But I can bet that MS will continue with this "same family" instead of saying it's a new gen and will say that generations not longer exist and people will roll with it.

They don't want people to think that this is a new gen for them like the 360 was trying to get a jump start over PS3.

If the system has a new CPU, new GPU, more RAM, different architecture, and whatever else people are bragging about, it's sounds like a new gen me. But MS is going to say this "same family" line or say generations either no longer exist or they have evolved. Just because a system has BC doesn't mean it's in the same gen.

I know people have short memories now days and can't look at this without the fanboy goggles are on. New gen systems in the past have had BC. Somehow people seem think that X1 is the 1st console with BC. But I just wasted my time because people are going to still think in their bubble.

Developers will be free to utilize the extra horsepower, whether it be for resolution, framerate, more details or whatever.

Project Scorpio will not be called Xbox One Pro. The power difference to the Xbox One alone should prove this is a new machine entirely. The thing many of you fail to realize is that Microsoft has been saying for a long time that it is done with generations. This simply means from now on, a new Xbox will be compatible with previous games, and the previous Xbox will play all the same games as the new system.

Going forward, no new Xbox will have games exclusively made for it, which then means, it will be part of the

The Scorpio console is just a much beefier Xbox One. It plays the same games, uses the same controller and accessories and has the same UI and OS. None of that is true of consoles of the same brand belonging to different generations.

Different focuses, the Xbox One and PS4 are so similar in architecture it came down to one being game focused the other being a multi-media machine. Now they've realized they need to hit harder with the tech in the gaming aspect and are launching a system whose difference is far more than their inferiority in comparison to the PS4.

it isn't xbox two, the xbox 360 was the xbox two. do you even know why they called it xbox one? microsoft doesn't need to call it xbox two anyways because unlike their competition they want your libraries to carry over much like how the pc world works and how products like the iphone work. only instead of new systems every year it will be when a major advancement takes place, in this case its 4K gaming.

If you knew anything about coding you'd know that creating a fully integrated emulation on a previous system with a completely different language takes YEARS of making. Pretty sure 2 years wasn't their start and end point, I think they planned to release it alongside the One in the future to draw any remaining casual fans to their latest system.

@bruh, nah. see, remember phil spencer said at E3 that they brought it to the X1 because it was the most requested feature. If they had planned it all along, they would have said so, if for no other reason, to slow PS4 momentum. "hey 360 owners, don't leave the xbox brand for PS4, BC is coming so you can keep all your old games while trading in your 360 to help pay for the X1."

@corroios - why are still spreading this FUD? You are right in some respects its not like the Pro. It will likely have a UHD player and ALL 360 and X1 games will play without a patch. In all other respects it is EXACTLY like the PS4 Pro. All peripherals work and many of the games will be patched to use the extra power.

I know it hurts that MS mid gen console may have some advantages over your preferred plastic box but you are starting to look very salty with your made up stories.

I don't think it should for sure be called the pro, but something that doesn't suggest a completely new generation would be a good idea as far as marketing if that's how they want it to be marketed. But im not sure ms wants that. Possible they want people to think its a new generation without it being one. I agree with xb1 elite.

The difference is Sony has no reason to abandon the PS4 right now. It has global domination in the console market. Xbox One on the other hand, I think Microsoft wants to get away from as quickly as possible and just start fresh again.

A full cycle from 2013-2019 sounds about right to me.

The idea of PS4 Pro is a mid-gen upgrade and just that. Extremely optional. If you're buying it day one, you'd be absolutely dumb to think that a new PS5 is not on the way within 3 years. You're only a sucker if you don't have the common sense to pay attention to the market.

He's actually making sense really. A new console is ALWAYS in the making from the day the previous one is completed, manufactured and released. That is how the hardware industry works. R&D is an extremely important and ongoing process. You guys were praying for Scorpio before knowing anything about it, just because it sounded like something that could beat PS4 in raw power. If you want to act wise... tell me what happens if the scenario kraenk12 is talking about happens? Do you go back to square one and try and hype up a Scorpio 2 without the details? Probably, because that's what's happening with Scorpio, and before that it was DirectX12, the cloud, ESRAM etc.

If you can actually say Scorpio > Pro, there should be nothing wrong with anyone saying PS5 > Scorpio.

I usually accuse those spam accounts of being Rookie because that's what the moderators confirmed to me. Also any new account that either is a parody of a N4G user is 95% of the time Rookie. When Microsoft makes a console announcement all of you are trying to downplay it and telling people it doesn't yet exist so they shouldn't talk about it, but then you turn around and act like the mere announcement of the PS5 is supposed to be some earth shattering event. Here's the reality:

Scorpio is coming out about a year after the PS4 Pro, just as the PS3 came out a year after the 360. Sony fans talked excitedly about the PS3 that entire year and it's just as valid for Xbox fans to be excited about Scorpio in the lead up to its launch.

It's conceivable the PS5 will come out in 2019. But Microsoft will probably just launch a more powerful console a year later, so I don't understand how some of you think that that is some huge blow to Scorpio or something. Both the PS4 Pro and Scorpio (or whatever they end up calling it) will likely have a good three years or more on the market before being superseded by new consoles from Sony and Microsoft.

Well it had a couple other bells and whistles (hybrid hard drive and such), But still I don't think going "elite" is a good idea. though I did see someone below say they should go with xbox one E. I actually like that. you get "elite" still but run far less a risk of confusion as no one calls the the Xbox one s the xbox one slim.

But then again, Looking at amazon, the elite is only available through third parties and whatever stock is left is limited. Not to mention hardly anybody even remembers it at all. So yeah, I'm probably making a moot point.

Biggamer is right. PS4 Pro does signal half a step and not a full upgrade. Which is why it still has the 4 in the title to let people know it's just an upgraded PS4 but not a full on new console.

It's not trolling Playstation, a lot of other tech companies do this too. Hell Street Fighter has been doing this for years.

Why not call it the Xbox 4/Four or Xbox 4K? Since it's going to be a somewhat more significant jump over ps4 to ps4-pro. Nintendo is releasing a 9th gen console. Microsoft said they are done with generations but they might as well treat the Scorpio as a 9th gen console. It is the 4th Xbox and would put them at the same number as Sony finally. And since it's focused on 4K Gameplay, Xbox 4 or Xbox 4K makes perfect sense tbh and wouldn't confuse consumers.

I think Microsoft is correct to just have a different name because they are a different company I understand people want things to be in unison and conformity, but it also lends to this belief that the company is this entire "me too".

Microsoft still needs to set themselves apart. To call themselves the pro simply makes it sound as if they're just copying their competitors and often leaves consumers feeling like they're just getting an imitation and I don't know if that's a good idea for their image.

in all seriousness i personally assumed they would stick with the "elite" branding. yes there was an "elite edition" xbox one already but this could literally just be xb one elite. another thought i had is that they would assign it a letter. the xbox one S is "slim or small" so you could have the xbox one E or P or whatever. I don't think they should call it "pro" because thats Sony's branding and to me that would be more confusing to less savvy consumers and xbox would want to stand out from that - not to mention, sony probably wouldn't like it. I do understand the logic here though and its not crazy, i just don't think it will fly for those reasons. The PS4 Pro coming out much earlier gives the masses enough time to absorb the concept of mid cycle upgrades.

I believe scorpio will fail just like x1 if microsoft doesn't step up their game. More power than the competition is the last thing they should worry about. Maybe stop putting all xbox games on pc would be a start. Suck up the loss of bad sales of games and make worthwile games to get people buying a xbox console to let the userbase grow. And who wonders that xbox is in the position it is nowadays, with how ms used x360, from the mid to end of the gen, as halo-forza-gears machine after it started so well at the beginning.

And nowadays with all games coming to pc, if they would actually start making good games outside of their trinity, that i'm interested in, i would just have to upgrade my pc to play these so i could also play all pc exclusives. For me, their would be no single reason to buy scorpio if this doesn't change.

I'm glad you don't run Microsoft. Having their games on PC doesn't affect the console side of things nearly as much as some of you want to believe. After Microsoft announced that all of their exclusives would be coming to PC a lot of you made it sound like it was this massive blow to Xbox One and many people just won't buy one now, but in reality sales have actually increased since then. It's obvious that most people buying a console don't care if the exclusives are available on Windows too.

Everything MS/XBOX does is not always about that other console, but maybe about trying to resemble a pc of sorts so to attract those that want a gaming PC but don't want the full cost of it and it .
Maybe its about trying to make both plats play almost all games made ...... Just my view on the matter

I kind of like Xbox Fusion... as you can play 300+ Xbox 360 BC titles and all Xbox One games on whatever the new Xbox will be called. Let's face it, it's most likely not going to be Scorpio because console code names are pretty much never the finalized name of the console. It kind of fuses all the consoles together.
