Why Does STEEP feel so flat?

Geno recently took part in the Steep Beta, and boy does he was not pleased with the results. Did Ubisoft Annecy live up to its promise of a massive open world snow sports game? Find out inside.

Grave3375d ago

My friends and I LOVED playing Steep together. Can't wait for release. People naysaying it aren't giving it enough playtime or playing alone.

Aeery3375d ago

I really like it.
Feels pretty good and if you never been on the top of a snowy mountain, well, it's something like that.

Goldby3375d ago

i loved it as well, but im not getting it.

it's a game that must be played with friends to keep the enjoyment level longer than 5 minutes.

i feel Ubisoft is relying too much on the community to continue the life of this game. yes there are ubisoft created events in the game and coming with updates, but after an alpha, and 2 betas. for a total of 6 days, im burnt out on it and not really caring about it anymore.

i was actually speaking witha friend about it, he was plannign on purchasing it for the dec 2nd release. he's holding off now after playing it over last weekend alone. "if no one else is getting it on release i wont waste the money"

It has potential but i see it being a snowboarding case of the Division. fun for the fiurst week then waiting and waiting for new content.

now i can only say that to a degree, because in the alpha and betas we have only ahd 3 of the 7 sections of the alps available to us, and there is the alaska mountains as well. so we will see how it fares once released

kraenk123374d ago

Thank you..that puts some hope back into my life...although I'd be playing alone as well I guess.

This game is a blast, i play the closed beta and open and had a freaking blast plus the game doesn't feel flat....

Kokyu3375d ago

That beta was the most boring thing Ive played in years

Kaze883375d ago

I felt the same. Doing tricks was okay, but it was not that exciting at all. Everything felt quite bland, spotting new events is annoying. Skydiving was pretty good, but it wont carry the game for me.

Ra3v3r3375d ago

I took part in the alpha and the beta and I've seen no improvement. I get that they seem to be going for the more realistic side of extreme sports but it makes for a rather bland experience. There was no sense of speed or danger and tricks were frustrating.

I did like the ability to change equipment on the fly and the deformable snow tech looked impressive but overall it didn't do it for me.

Goldby3375d ago

only improvement they had was the print button. they need to add a jump button when you are walking so that you can better climb ledges and such.

i think to fix the trick issues would be to simply make a "training" jump for the snowboard/skiies.

instead of wingsuiting from the hot air ballon, let us drop down with out snowboard/skiies and practice the tricks with prompts. just before you hit the ground the parachute gets pulled you land softly and continue down the hill.

On that note, the Burger Shot freestyle was the best event i found

I don't know about the sense of speed and danger part. I searched out some crazy lines on my own where I was purposely on mostly rock and ice and extremely sloped....it was pretty crazy. The average lines are less so. But, I felt that they moved fast enough to work with the overall game and the balance that they wanted to reach with realism vs. arcade. I think we've just been conditioned to expect the over-the-top experiences for extreme sports. Many people felt the same about SKATE. (no frills, no thrills)

@Goldby...I agree about SKATE, but the many people held it up to THPS and didn't want to play it. I played STEEP alone and still had fun. But, I also played with people I met and it was more fun.

Goldby3374d ago

skate was amazing, but one thing that that game had over Steep is the fact it was fun to play alone.

i just cant seem to stay interested in it when im playing alone.

Loved the beta. Can't wait for full release. Finding your own lines is a blast, especially with friends.

jakmeup1232205d ago

you my sir are a good man and. But the biggest L is they had was not putting in the division

Lon3wolf2205d ago

Would of swapped out WoW for Division personally.

Sono4212204d ago (Edited 2204d ago )

Nah the biggest L is they forgot to add the Pokemon Sword and Shield Wild area ;) You're supposed to be able to take one step and go from a sunny summer day to a cold cloudy winter right?

In all seriousness though, I would say Uncharted 2 deserves to at least be a runner up.

pwnmaster30002205d ago

Wait so no horizon? Why is it the cover page then lol

porkChop2205d ago

For all it's faults, The Division has some of the best winter atmosphere I've come across. Massive Entertainment really nailed that aspect.

bluefox7552205d ago

Interestingly enough, today was the first "heavy snow" day we've had in PA, it's weird, it's been a pretty mild winter up until this point.

william_cade2205d ago

F' their click-fest article...sleezy does it.

BeCaUsE iT's NoT sTeAm! If often the reason why people don't like epic

Mainman1872242d ago

You'd have to pay me to play those games. Even then I'm not so sure.

Spenok2243d ago

Dang, 3 free games for the first 10 days. That's awesome.

Iamnothuman122243d ago

At this rate I won't ever have to buy anything from their store.

Unspoken2242d ago

And you eventually won't have to use any other platform either. Smart move.

Father__Merrin2242d ago

Epic have really looked after people since its launch. i predict the store gets stronger and stronger in the marketplace

luckytrouble2242d ago

Nah. All Epic is doing is building a community of people that will just hang around for the free stuff. People that are happy to take free games aren't going to necessarily overlap with people willing to pay.

Whatever Epic's strategy here is, they aren't exactly doing much as a store.

RazzerRedux2242d ago

I’ve bought a few games on sale there. They have some good deals. It isn’t just about free games, but good deals and free games? Seems like a pretty good store strategy to me.

PMind2242d ago

I have purchased multiple games. Most of the free ones are nothing I would have bought but are a welcome bonus.
