Behind the scenes on how the Xbox One Backward Compatibility program works

Major Nelson and Bill Stillwell of the BC Team delve into the technical side of Backwards Compatibility on the Xbox One in Major Nelsons latest podcast.

The Xbox BC team are wizards and for those of you who keep asking why your favorite Xbox 360 games haven't been added to BC, you should definitely listen to this podcast or read the info below to get the highlights... More Technical info will be discussed in the future.

Thanks to Spartan Ranger (Xbox Subreddit) for the highlights below.

-The first half hour is dedicated towards backward compatibility (BC) and it's a very good listen and a rare peek into the otherwise secretive program. For those of you who can't listen to the podcast, I've written notes covering the interview with Bill Stillwell:
-Originally prototyped by a group of passionate engineers.
-One of the first games demoed internally was Castle Crashers, which also served as a good model for multiplayer and local co-op.
-Project Fission was the name for getting the base 360 instruction set to work on the ONE. The architecture change from the 360 to Xbox One meant translating PowerPC code to x64.
-They still have to go through games on an individual basis to check if the emulator can handle the various physics engines, loads, etc. For example, at one point they got Forza Horizon running flawlessly through the emulator but comically, there wasn’t collision detection and you could drive through everything. Working on correctness or precision through the emulator takes away from performance, so the challenge is to strike a balance between the two.
-Pre-E3 2015: The BC team was terrified of a leak. They were amused whenever people on reddit or neoGAF would speculate on backward compatibility but immediately shot down by others citing Microsoft's previous statement that BC was impossible.
-E3 2015: They decided on showing off backward compatibility with Mass Effect 1 because of its reputation as a beloved title. The only downside to this were people forgetting how poorly it ran on the 360 and now blaming the low framerate on the emulator. One joke was that should've secretly swapped consoles to play ME1 on the 360 and revealed the switch whenever anyone complained about the performance.
-For the BC team, it was rewarding to see the audience’s reaction to the reveal during the E3 conference. Bill Stillwell said there was a massive intake of breath among the crowd followed by an eruption of celebration.
-Stats: Launched Nov 2015 with 100 games. Currently over 280 games backward compatible. The goal is 300 by the end of the year, but no promises. 210 million hours of playtime logged through BC on the Xbox One.

christocolus3471d ago (Edited 3471d ago )

-A large part of their workload is “republishing” every game (including DLC and all region variants at the same time) that goes backward compatible. This technically makes the BC team the largest publishing studio at Microsoft.
-The list of games voted for backward compatibility on UserVoice is their primarily source for ranking and prioritizing which games to put through testing. But the ease at which to make them perform perfectly in the emulator determines how fast each game is released. No game is held back and they do take into account which titles people really want.
-When a 360 game is selected for BC, testers have to play through the entire game to collect data. As the game is further worked on, testers have to complete multiple full playthroughs to test modifications to the emulator, evaluate performance, search for bugs, etc.
-They also have to communicate with publishers over IP rights and music licensing (Game DVR). Some publishers during the 360 era are now defunct, posing an additional challenge in tracking down who owns what. For example, THQ’s properties were scattered to the wind and bought up by other publishers.
-Their legal team has to navigate through this Wild West of old middleware contracts behind each game, performing the due diligence necessary to make sure everything is legal in accordance to IP laws. Unfortunately, this means sometimes running into the most illogical of legal issues as a result of weird contracts. That said, they have gotten great third part support and all publishers want to participate.
-Another obstacle is tracking down and analyzing all the different versions and SKUs of BC games like GOTY, Platinum Hits, promotional, etc.
-Sneak King (and the other Burger King games) are especially difficult to make BC because they were not printed on Mirosoft’s traditional encrypted discs. Xbox Live uses that encryption as the identifier for each game, so there is currently no way for the Xbox One to recognize those discs. They’re looking into a solution.
-Each time they update or improve the emulator, they retest some older BC games to see if they can fix known issues. For example, they updated the BC version of Halo Reach after they saw performance gains with an updated emulator.
-Roughly 1800 total Xbox 360 games.

BC is amazing and the effort MS is putting into this should be applauded..

Mrveryodd3471d ago

Thanks for the read 😃
BC is something that i have only used with Red Dead , but it's a great option . I have talked a couple of my friends into the Xbox as they get to play 360 games as well ... And they love it .
So that is 2sales that are definite because of BC
Anyone who down votes BC is just plain wrong

MyDietEqualsGames3470d ago

Yeah. It's definitely a + that Sony should take notice in. I despise Sony's way of doing BC.

Microsofts effort on games that can be resold and recapitalized on just goes to show they are serious about spending money to make their box look attractive. Imagine being able to play the most popular 360 games on your Xbone while you wait for them to be 'remastered' Lol. Heck of a lot better than paying for a shitty service that makes my 100/100 connection feel like 56k dialup. I tried PSnow and it blew meaner than a typhoon.

freshslicepizza3470d ago

why doesn't microsoft just take a page out of sony's playbook and show all you need to do is put the game in and the rest is handled by the system to verify it. then show sony's way of doing it with services like playstation now and remastering ps2 games and charging for them even if you already own them.

xDealtwithIt3470d ago

@moldybread

Bu bu bu bu but PSnow isn't BC!!!

Obscure_Observer3470d ago

Well Said! Thanks for the Highlights chris! ;)

jmetalhead778123470d ago

This a feature that has been huge for me! I'm a late bloomer gamer you could say. I owned the OG Xbox and the 360, but played sports games only. Very causal player. Since the XB1 I've become the exact opposite. I don't even play sports games anymore... I've spent easy over 200 hours playing BC games. I really feel I have 2 consoles in 1! I know I'm probably in the minority, but BC is actually my favorite feature on XB1. Great job MS!!

210 million hours thru BC, alot of Xbox gamers still working on last gen backlog.

Aenea3470d ago

10 hours per user on average?

This is the way I always assumed they did it, many people said it was just an emulator and they didn't have to do anything, yadayada, well, you see what it takes to get a title working. Still rather amazing though! I do hope all consoles will be BC in the future and go back quite a few gens as well...

Sirk7x3469d ago

For certain! I work 50-something hours a week, and spend time with my girlfriend on my days off, and the backlog is real xD

Battlestar233470d ago

Very impressed with the job Microsoft has done with BC it's a shame the same can't be said about Sony they would rather charge $20-30 for PS2 games with no improvements other then trophies.

PS1, PS2 and even PS3 games are very easy to emulate on a PC i just hope Sony Fanboy's wake up and demanded that Sony bring free BC of PS1, PS2 and PS3 to PS4.

Ju3470d ago (Edited 3470d ago )

First, this requires every XB title to be verified and be "patched" by MS. This only works with "republished" titles. So, not really a big difference to "PS2" games (and btw, those XB360 have 0 improvements over the original titles, either). From a consumer perspective, the question is, why Sony doesn't allow PS2 disks to be used as a key and give those titles away for free...

Second, and no, PS3 games are "not easy" to emulate on the PC. In fact we still do not have an SPU emulator today. Those games shown on a the PC do not utilize the SPUs at all. We simple will not see PS3 emulation on any platform - I tend to say: "ever". It's just a so much bigger technical challenge, unfortunately (you'd need 7 physical HW threads running at a latency of a 3.2Ghz cpu in realtime with a bandwidth of over 200GB/s. This is a challenge for any console - and PC - today. Well, it might be possible with a 8 core CPU which runs internally on die using 1st level cache only (512KB SRAM per core - with 4MB 1st level cache shared between the cores) and no 2x cluster setup). With a console actually being able to lock cores and use thread affinity. So, I would not say it's impossible. But not with a "general" purpose OS (can't guarantee thread affinity and can't lock cache lines) or with todays console CPUs (2.2Ghz Jaguar isn't fast enough). The good thing is, the PS3 PPC is a single core in order CPU. So that should be "easy" to emulate with a JIT - next to the other 7 cores; I can't see a GPU being able to emulate SPUs any time soon.

And third, this is the reason why the Pro has a HW PS4 mode, which allows every single PS4 game to run on the Pro. This is a Sony patent, btw. Well, and Sony could "stealthy" enable games getting "accelerated" if they'd establish an internal QA which actually would do what MS does, and run internal QA running those games in "emulation mode". (see http://www.eurogamer.net/ar... - looks like they actually already have that option). In that case, and because the Pro is a PS4 (no republishing required; means same license applies) this could be expanded gradually without any "formal" process (looks like they already have a "whitelist in place).

From a business perspective, it must cost MS a fortune to republish those titles without charging one extra money (are they actually free if you own the original game?). But I guess the hope is, that some people will now buy the game if they have never played the game before and since MS is the publisher, they probably will get most of the royalties on those titles. So, it makes sense for them doing that.

It really makes me wonder how this will work on the Scorpio if this isn't considered a "XBox One". Simply the license would not include a different platform. Just being curious here. And then, if they don't put a HW compatibility switch in that box, they must run every single XBO title through their internal verification - and if they want to say "every game runs on Scorpio" they must do that before release (else some titles will simply not run or must be disabled). The XBOs vs XBO is a different story, because this box is 100% backwards compatible minus the clock speed, which probably is a calculated risk MS took (a very small risk).

But, the bottom line is, MS has an advantage here and from a consumer perspective I hope they will be successful. It is a great argument being able to play all those games. It's just not as trivial as people think it is.

PhucSeeker3469d ago (Edited 3469d ago )

"those XB360 have 0 improvements over the original titles, either"
Red dead Redemption with its stable performance beg to differ. Also no tearing in almost every one of them. Wouldn't you count those as improvements ?

freshslicepizza3469d ago

@Ju
"It really makes me wonder how this will work on the Scorpio if this isn't considered a "XBox One"."

it is part of the xbox family.

"No"

lol, then i guess you're done here.

xDealtwithIt3470d ago

Sony fans have been saying for a long time that they don't want BC, even though they love remasters. Sony has told them that BC isn't necessary so this is why you see them saying it and telling others to keep their old systems. As if that was some great option to have. I am sure if Sony ever does include BC for any future system it will then be the bees knees, like upscaling, oops i meant checkerboard rendering.

Aenea3470d ago (Edited 3469d ago )

I still have a PS3 backlog and probably would be easier to get thru them if I could play them on my PS4, right now I rarely, if ever, turn on the PS3. I don't want to pay for PS Now when I already have the games.

Still it's not that big of a deal breaker for me, I still have the PS3 and have a backlog for the PS4 as well so I rather work on the latter :)

Also, I do think that most X1 owners feel the same as I do, I mean 210 million hours logged in BC over what, 21 million users? That's 10 hours per X1 owner which isn't really much.

Basically it's a feature I would call: neat to have it, but not completely necessary. Like an UHD bluray drive ;)

----
As for remasters, they are being made for the Xbox One as well and they seem to sell to since they keep making them...

------
@DAEMONIFEAR

That would mean the average per Xbox One gamer goes down, making it worse ;)

-----
@Doctor_MG

Like I said, it's neat to have and it's pretty obvious with an average like that that not everyone is using it and others are using it more. Question is, how many hours total have you played games on your Xbox One and how small of a percentage is the 40 hours number for BC games?

Would it have been such a big deal to not have BC for you?

----
PS. Loving the disagrees to a post where I talk about my personal feelings towards not having BC on the PS4 and noting facts about BC on the X1, it's rather funny :)

3470d ago
DAEMONIFEAR3470d ago

@Aenea you do know 6 months ago the X1 was at 21million sales I'm sure it's more than that by now (y)

1Victor3470d ago

@Battlestar23 you know why Sony won't do BC because last gen when they did it all the haters come out of the woods and from under the bridge to say it's a waste of time and money. They could had added the PS2/3 chips inside the PS4 like they did on the other 2 consoles but got afraid people would complain about it and the price or other 💩 Like that

Master of Unlocking3469d ago (Edited 3469d ago )

It's a joke, right? You're joking when you say the PS3 is really easy to emulate on PC? Nobody's accomplished that yet! There isn't a single emulator that can run a sizeable list of PS3 games on PC yet, much less its big AAA titles like Gran Turismo 5/6, The Last of Us, God of War III/Ascension, Heavy Rain, or WipeOut HD, and even if it were possible, it would probably take something like a NASA PC to do it. This is actually why the PS3 games can't be played on the PS4, because the architecture of the PS3, with the Cell processor, is vastly different to the one found in the PS4. If Sony could've made it happen, they woud have made it happen. I remember reading an interview a couple years ago, with Mr Yoshida I believe, saying the whole team in charge of the development of the PS4 at SIE was disappointed when they learned of M. Cerny's decision to go with an x86 architecture, as that meant BC with PS3 games was impossible. When they managed to get a few PS2 titles to work on the PS3, they did it. Albeit it was digital only because they apparently had to patch the games in. So when it's possible, Sony does it, just like they did with PS1 games on the PS2 back in the day, and initially did it again with PS2 games on the PS3 (and they were even willing to come up with a hardware-based BC which increased the price of their system and made it less competitive). And just like they'll do with PS4 games on the PS5, mark my words.

That BC you xbox guys are getting is nice, no question about that, but I also take a look at the games they add from time to time, and let me tell you that if it were an xbox360 I had had, well, if my collection of PS3 games were xbox360 games, I wouldn't be able to part with my xbox360 at all, because that would mean ditching the bulk of my collection. Microsoft's approach is definitely more consumer-friendly in a way, because that BC is free, but it's also very limited, compared to not only PS2 on PS3 BC (even when it went from a HW-based BC to a SW-based BC), and to PS Now too, and doubly so, in terms of number of games, and in terms of number of devices on which you can access the respective services.

I don't have any problems with BC at all, because I still have my PS3, and I'll always keep it (for what very little money I would make if I sold it anyway...) and you guys should do the same. I doubt MS's efforts, although commendable, have enabled any one of you to ditch their xbox 360 altogether, or you really didn't care much about most of your games' collection.
All right, bring on the disagrees.

I have never played the ME trilogy(Yeah I know) but thanks to BC and EA Access, I just beat the first game and just started #2 then 3 in time for the new ME. Id say both these programs are amazing. Im playing stuff I never did before, even at 118k GS

Sheppard21669d ago

I loved those games so much back in the day.

Knightofelemia1669d ago (Edited 1669d ago )

Silent Hill 2 and 4 would be better titles to add to the BC list the a then Are You Smarter then a 5th Grader First Templar I have never heard of. I am not going out of my way to buy these two titles kind of lazy to add these two titles when all Microsoft has to do is bang on Konami's door to add SH2 and 4. Downpour and Homecoming work so why not add 2 and 4 to the list.

BehindTheRows1669d ago

Because 2 & 4 were only available in the HD Collection for the 360.

MissAubrey1669d ago (Edited 1669d ago )

You mean 2&3 are in the HD collection.. Silent Hill 4 the Room was only on the OG Xbox, pc and ps2. But is currently playable thru BC on the xbox 360, not xbox one

BehindTheRows1669d ago (Edited 1669d ago )

@MissAubrey

Yes, I’m aware (I own every Silent Hill game released - yes, all, the PS1 original all the way down to the PC, Xbox, and Wii releases, and am emulating the first on PC). I know what’s what. I simply couldn’t change the typo nor finish the edit since N4G’s option expires.

Regardless, 4 was never an Xbox 360 game, and therefore, BC can’t exist in the way he’s requesting for it.

Knightofelemia1669d ago (Edited 1669d ago )

@BehindTheRows

SH2 and SH3 are on the HD Collection and yes BC can work with the OG Xbox on Xbox 1, Series X/S Microsoft has all ready added some OG Xbox games to the list of BC games. Microsoft even announced that some OG Xbox games will work on newer Xbox systems at E3.

Knightofelemia1669d ago (Edited 1669d ago )

@BehindtheRows

SH2 on the HD Collection is a poor mans copy it's way different from the PS2 and OG Xbox port so is SH3 in the HD Collection is way different then its PS2 cousin.

BehindTheRows1668d ago (Edited 1668d ago )

@MissAubrey

I never said you DID say that. I was talking about him.

BehindTheRows1669d ago (Edited 1669d ago )

Uh, yes I know (like I already said, it was a typo). You asked about 2 (already BC in the HD Collection) and 4, which ISN’T on the 360, unlike 3, Downpour, and Homecoming.

If you’re speaking about Xbox BC, in general, then that’s different and 4 (from the original Xbox) will most likely be added one day. Your other option is to maybe grab a PC and a copy or emulate the PS2 version with said PC.

MissAubrey1669d ago (Edited 1669d ago )

I said SH4 was playable on the 360 thru OG xbox backwards compatibility. "playable on 360" not playable on Xbone/Series.

BehindTheRows1669d ago

Yeah, the HD Collection wasn’t very good, but that’s besides the point. :P

It's too bad we have OG titles like Deathrow and others that haven't been made compatible yet. MS has made a great effort bringing over the majority of their library but 1st gen XBOX titles have fallen through the cracks.

XBManiac1669d ago

The First Templar and Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?

the moral of the story here folks is they brought bc back! yes these titles suck but atleast we know now they are back at it again after alittle hiatus!

I think if Microsoft really wanted to leverage their 360 library they would work to bring 360 emulation to PC and offer games like Fable 2 on Game Pass for PC.

Wikkid6661878d ago

Their goal would be to keep moving forward will the streaming service. Get the latency down on that so there wouldn't be a need for an emulator.

Tacoboto1878d ago

His point is... they could bring *that* emulator from the cloud hardware and let us be able to run 360-exclusive games on our own PCs.

I'd understand third party games being excluded by licensing deals, but it would be awesome if MS could have 360 emulation as a download into the Windows App for at least their own titles.

Orchard1878d ago

My guess is they haven't done this just because getting reliable/predictable performance with emulation on PC where there's a billion hardware configurations is complicated. Easier to have it running on fixed hardware and streamed to the PC.

1878d ago
1878d ago
Eidolon1878d ago

It's never going to look or be as latency free as even emulation.

DJStotty1877d ago (Edited 1877d ago )

@saishi

I can not comment on other cloud streaming platforms, but the only issue i have had with xcloud, is the odd bit of freezing, but other than that the games seem to play ok, at least on my galaxy S9.

It's not perfect, but it is good enough for dropping into a game on a work break or lunch.

PS - when i am at home, i do not use xcloud, i use the console. And xcloud performs quite well for something still in beta.
