This is a fact. Every generation of Sony's consoles have been leaps and bounds beyond the predecessor. PlayStation used CD, PlayStation 2 used DVD, and PLAYSTATION 3 uses Blu-ray. On top of that, the graphical achievements have been astonishing. You can clearly tell PS2 games from PSone games, and you can clearly tell PS3 games from PS2 games.

Not just that, but also hardware functionalities have either improved or advanced from previous generations. From a corded DualShock 2 controller to a Bluetooth wireless DualShock 3 controller. Memory Card readers, WiFi, and standard Hard Drive.

I read this article and thought I would sit down with my PS3 and get started on my next gen experience. Except that the games don't feel any more next gen than my 360 games. MGS4 was pretty, and I liked the camo system, but if next gen is sitting around waiting for an install and watching cut scenes, then I will stay with the next gen but still current gen games. Clearly Microsoft determined when it started this generation by getting out first, and that's what they'll do again. Sony are trailing and have been since the 360 came out...the 360 still uses DVD's and that has forced most devs making multiplatform games to only make the games the size of a DVD. On top of that microsoft don't have a hard drive as standard which has also limited what developers can do but either way, they've pretty much determined this generation, that's why we don't see as many PS3 exlusives.

If you define it as it is defined in the dictionary as stages of successive improvement in the development of a technology then I think all 3 consoles fit the bill in one way or another! I mean to say the Wii and the 360 aren’t that much better than their predecessors is abit unfair. I mean for example I very much doubt the original xbox would be capable of something like gears of war. But all 3 have successive improvements in technology e.g the cpu and gpu in the 360 is much more improved than that in the xbox! The wii while not tons better in tech capabilities does offer a brand new control scheme which can be alot of fun! But if you define it as this article defines it as as a brand new never used technology then yes its the PS3. I already have a wii and 360 and do plan on getting a PS3 as I do believe the games will keep getting better and better but im trying to put a balanced view on it and I think like the PS3 that some games on the 360 are fantastic and way way beyond anything than you got on an xbox!

The RSX processor in the PS3 is a modified off the shelf product, but the Cell is new. The graphics card in the 360 is a completely new type of architecture with unified pipelines. It was the first to use the architecture and I believe is still the only one to use it. The chip design itself is owned by Microsoft. The CPU for the 360 is also new. It is a three core, dual thread processor. And is only in the 360, it can't be bought off the shelf. It was developed by IBM specifically for the Xbox 360 and Microsoft owns the rights to it. Wow what a load of crap. Yeah PS3 is a great piece of Kit; I am very happy with mine. However, PS3 does not define next gen gaming, it defines Sony's version of next gen gaminng. Next gen is about the gaming experience. My 360 also delivers a great experience; that it is made from off the shelf components means that M$ reached profitability quicker; and profitability is what all the console makers are aiming for.

The Wii is the top selling console and although I personally do not think much of it my opinion is not shared by the vast majority.

Sony's decision to put Blu-ray on the machine was a business decision that relates to it desire to push it's proprietary media. I think the load time are very annoying and detracts from my enjoyment of the overall gaming experience. Sony created the PS3 to be a marketplace which they can exploit M$ did likewise as did Nintendo; none of these companies have any other objective than to make money. Competition is what really ensures good games for gamers so be grateful that there is competition.

I think a lot of people are missing the point. The last system to come out defines when next gen starts, otherwise who are the others competing against? If your just talking about the next gen of a system in comparing it to its previous generation then what the other system does is irrelevant. If your comparing across the board then the next gen doesn't start till all competitors show. I prefer the sooner. I look at it as MS and Sony are running separate but overlapping generations the next XBOX will start a new generation and then PS4 will start another generation. I'm pretty sure both companies see it this way too, that's why neither seem to worry about sales as much as fanboys. Can I get some some bubbles if you agree ?

IMO true next gen is adding things that weren't there last gen and that innovate like the 360 online community, but also adding extra programming to the games to make them more realistic like physics and better sound, I do agree greatly that the next gen systems should be a multimedia hub with the main activity being games

i bought it day one of release. had it on reserve. Great game.

but it loaded wayyyyyy tooo slow. it did drop in frame rate terribly.. my character would job in place then the frame rate would catch up. on close ups there was a lot of graininess around the forehead mainly but through out the world.

while a lot of install bashing goes on about the ps3. mass effect is a game that can benefit from optional installs and/or complete installs. great game that belongs on a real next gen console.

What's so funny about the article is the TC doesn't even know what Next-Gen means. It has nothing to do with what in the hardware and that's a fact.

The original meaning of NEXT-GEN is just the "next generation" of game consoles. When the XBox 360 was released, it started the "Next-Gen" or "next generations of game consoles" to the market. So when Sony said that "The Next-Gen doesn't start until we say so." they were fooling themselves, because it started immediately after the XBox 360 was released.

NEXT-GEN has nothing to do with how powerful a console is or what technology is in it. Fanboys made up that dumb definition to justify their favorite system as being superior.

Gimme a break, next generation starts with the first new console, that's all there is to it, whether it be sony, microsoft, or nintendo.

Sony had the chance to win again in this console war however they were too concerned with adding their overpriced Blu-Ray that they missed the mark. Not too mention all their exclusives by the time Sony has a library of really good exclusives the system will be unwanted and new technology will be better.

"The xbox360 CPU and GFX is last gen", are you kidding me? I'd concede that the Power PC is "old" however your just called the main processor of the Cell old as well, and the PPC chip in the Tri-core was modified to improve performance in games. But the GFX card? The GFX technolgy in the 360 out weighs the technology in the RSX by a significant margin.
A lot of what you see as "great graphics" is merely a reflection of one huge error by MS, dropping the HDD as standard, you'll get no argument from me there. It's lead to "squeezing" game onto disc to allow for variable transfer rates (not space-yet), the end result is the odd frame stutter when loading form DVD, and the odd lower res texture, I would be interested to see you thoughts on Mass Effect when loaded from a HDD. As far the RSX concerned, it lack bandwidth in IMHO to deal with significant post processing effects, hence GTA's lower res, on the other hand the pS3 has a HDD, hence the lack of relative pop in. Half a dozen of one and six of the other, they all bring something to the table.

I own both an xbox 360 and a ps3 and would never get rid of my xbox. I want to like the PS3, but there are some major problems with it considering it is sooooo powerful. First of all, I don't have the proprietary wireless adapter for the 360, I have a belkin, and it works way better than the one built into the PS3. The same demos on both systems were very close in gigabytes and the 360 beats the PS3 everytime. Not to mention that you have to install the damn thing after you download it. To make things worse, my Ps3 is like ten feet closer to the router. Explain that Fonyboys. What about the mandatory installs on a lot of the better games for the PS3? Oh and the installs between chapters on MGS4? I will never buy any other PS3 games that force you to install 5g+ of data before I can actually play the damn thing. I slogged through MGS4 and traded it in as soon as I was done. I just couldn't take the loading between chapters that crap is horrendous and definitely needs to be addressed. The 360 might not have blu ray or the cell processor, but it sure is nice to buy a game and be able to play it instantly not 20 minutes after the damn mandatory install. I am definitely not saying Microsoft is perfect (no company is), they have things about the 360 that are definitely annoying, but at least they get more things right than the PS3.

This gen hasn't been the best for games, last gen consoles are still out there and now there's been talk of the PS6 and Xbox Two for a year or so. Many games this gen will be ported to next gen and the cycle will continue. The re-release of the Neo Geo AES+, games on cartridge for £70 ($95), gaming is going back in time. Gaming has gone pricing mad with the high cost of games, consoles and controllers. The men and women at the top are clueless.

It’s always interesting to hear behind-the-scenes stories like this, especially involving veterans like Shuhei Yoshida and leadership figures like Jim Ryan. That said, there are usually multiple sides to decisions at that level. It could be less about not “listening” and more about differences in long-term vision for PlayStation. Yoshida played a huge role in shaping the brand, so whatever the reason, his impact is undeniable.

If true, and I'm inclined to believe it is, it goes to show that Sony lost their way when they became more western/didn't respect the PlayStation origin story. Andrew House and Jack Tretton did great work, but they also didn't try to fundamentally change the PlayStation DNA. Ryan oversaw the death of Japan Studio and a live service direction.

I miss the first three generations of PlayStation. The way they turned PS3 around, we knew they meant business. We were all worried for a bit there around launch. Eventually from 2008 they started shifting slowly. But since Yoshida was fired, it's never been the same. Still enjoy my PS5 daily. I got a backlog dating back to PS2 lol So I'm fine but new games aren't as appealing anymore.

It seems like we were thrown on to the worst timeline possible where everything is too expensive and the wrong people were put in positions that makes the world a shitty place. We could have had Shu as the head of PS but we got the shitty alternative. Same goes for everyone in power around the world. Doesn’t matter the company or country the majority of us got the shitty picks and the world is declining like never before. I do think PS can come out of this because of their studios, talent and IP but they need someone more in touch with gamers leading things like Shu was. They’re still the best place for console gaming imo but it could be much better than it is especially without the massive live service failures. The rest of the world I have a lot less hope for right now. Hopefully the pendulum swings back towards the good ole days but I’m preparing for the worst.
