NES Classic Edition Impressions

FGE - The importance of the Nintendo Entertainment System cannot be overstated. It brought the video game industry back from near collapse, had a beloved library of games, and made gaming a new favorite pastime for millions of people. As someone who first experienced video games on an NES, I was very excited when Nintendo announced the NES Classic Edition in July. For the uninitiated, it’s a miniature, $60 version of the NES that comes pre-loaded with 30 fan favorite games. It’s kind of like those cheap plug and play consoles you always see at your local pharmacy, but comes with games you’ll actually want to play. I figured the NES Classic Edition would be a big deal, but I thought I’d be able to walk into a store on the console’s November 11th release and have no issue picking one up. Boy, was I a fool to think that. I went to my local Walmart at 5:00 in the morning and there were already 15 people waiting in line to buy one. Only 13 units were available, so I quickly drove to the Target that was a couple of miles away. I ended up fourth in line and the store got 25 units, so I was the lucky owner of an NES Classic Edition a couple of hours later. At the time of this writing, the console is sold out pretty much everywhere and is selling for ludicrous prices on eBay. Nintendo has mentioned that they plan to have more consoles available in time for the holidays. I was surprised at how small the console was when I first opened the box. It will easily fit in the average hand, and is light without feeling flimsy. It looks almost the same as the original NES, with the only changes belonging to the power, video, and controller ports. It even simulates the door for the cartridge slot, but it can’t be opened and is simply molded into the casing.

If you need a spare controller for your NES Classic, Amazon has them for $10

Let’s face it, the fact the NES Classic only comes with one controller is extremely lame. And ordering an extra controller hasn’t been that easy since most of them sell out so quick leaving most of the inventory out of stock.
