Nintendo’s Switch Can Learn From Past Consoles

Like most people, I think the Switch looks quite interesting and unlike any other console we've seen before. I've always wanted a handheld with an adjustable screen size, and this is pretty close. #gamecube #gamerprofessionals

It will be an accessory fest system I tell you now.
They should have went for simplicity not complication.

im not so sure nintendo has learned, they seem to continue to go down a different path and this time might fail in both handheld and console markets. hnadhelds had the luxury of cheaper games and cheaper development plus the system was more affordable than a console.

as a game console it might once again not have the oomph to cater to current game development and will lack the power that many gamers want. which could turn it into yet another console mainly to play just nintendo published titles.

Looking at the design and rumored specs, no... they didn't.

Making a handheld and calling it a console is just.... no.

0.5-0.7 TFlops in 2017 for a console (perhaps slightly higher) is crap.

XB1 has been struggling with 1.3 since 2013. Hell PS4 is struggling with 1.84. This is why Pro exists and Scorpio launches next year.

Yet here comes Nintendo with something that is 40-60 percent of the power (when docked) of the XB1, 3 1/2 years later, for $299-399 aka as much or more than PS4/XB1S and potentially as much as PS4 Pro.... with no hard drive, and cartridges that are much smaller than current gen games even on the PS4/XB1.

It's one thing to create a handheld with these specs, it's entirely another to say this is a console. It isn't.

This device is supposed to bring in fish from the blue ocean, aka casuals. But this thing won't move the needle with casuals... especially since smartphones won't be that far behind. Free games on a device you already own, that is closer in specs to Switch (by far) then Switch is to XB1.

Think of it this way.

Switch is likely closer to smartphones than XB1
PS4/XB1 is likely as expensive or less than Switch
Wii U was rumored to be 1 TFlops (and people were concerned by such lack of power), yet it's successor 'console' Switch is likely under it too!
If you overclock a midrange 2016 GPU like a GTX 1070 by 10-12 percent, the gain in power is equal to the total power of Switch.
The top end video card (a single one) is literally going to be upwards of 20x as powerful as Switch, Scorpio up to 12x, PS4 Pro up to 8x, PS4 up to 3.25x, XB1 up to 2.2x. (Oh that's a 2016 card, the 1080ti, not 2017, which will make these numbers look sillier when Volta and/or a Titan Volta come out.)

But it costs just as much or more. Wrap your head around that. 3rd party support, at least the AAA third party variety that drives sales of console aren't going to be on Switch, and those that *might*, won't sell well. Why? Because it'll be the 6th and 7th best version of the game, harder to code for, smaller install base (with buyers focused more on Nintendo games, and mostly Nintendo handheld games). Now, could we get some sort of small handheld type games being supported by 3rd parties doing something different. Maybe. But their regular wares are unlikely on Switch.

I want a Nintendo console, not a NIntendo handheld Nintendo is claiming to be a console and charging as if it were a console.... and no, there is absolutely no reason Nintendo had to do this in this way. No valid reason. They could of made a PS4 to PS4 Pro type console for $299-399 and given people with an XB1 or PS4 a reason to UPGRADE to Nintendo. Instead they are asking people to downgrade for as much or more.... good luck with that.

If you wanted a handheld, congrats, looks like a good one.
If you are like most people and don't, but simply wanted a competitive console... you didn't get one. You got another Wii U.

...and for the people that still don't get it. The Wii didn't cost the same or more then the other consoles. The Switch... DOES.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing25d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit25d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing25d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9225d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
