Is Virtual Reality set to Fail?

Alex S. from Link-Cable writes: "Ever since I was a little kid the idea of running around and playing in an all-encompassing virtual world was exciting. The very thought of bending reality to suite whatever suited my fancy seemed like the obvious choice for the direction that video games would be taking in the future and I couldn’t wait for them to reach that point. Well Virtual Reality is now a… reality and various headsets from a whole bunch of different companies have made their way into our lives. The future is now people! The one problem? Who can afford these things?!"

Set to improve, i would say....

S2Killinit3484d ago

its set to take over. From what we've seen so far.

darthv723484d ago

It will neither fail nor take over. Not until they can tackle the singular experience aspect. When 3d tv was a thing... even if a person wasnt playing themselves they could still put on a set of glasses to experience the effect. Companies should be finding a way to get multiple HMD's to work on the same system.

Hell... even the old movie lawn mower man had the two main characters in the same VR space each using their own HMD on the same system. Yes, i know it was a movie but that is the sort of thing we should be able to achieve all these years later. As it is, VR is a great singular experience that I would love to see able to be expanded like adding extra controllers to a system.

Baby steps now but soon enough we should get local couch multiplayer VR gaming.

How is it set to fail when PSVR it's selling out?

creeping judas3484d ago

Shockingly VR isn't all about Sony??

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen3484d ago

If Sony's VR isn't failing then how is VR set to fail? Difficult to grasp that simple fact huh?

S2Killinit3484d ago (Edited 3484d ago )

its set to fail until MS gets one too. Then its not set to fail anymore. Until then, its just too early, its not ready, not "there yet", it needs to improve, blah blah blah.

Remember when Vita's were sold out and hard to find...yet that's dead. It's all going to come down to how fast and well developers come out with must buy titles. Resident Evil 7 is the first game for VR that has me interested and after that nothing until whenever Ace Combat comes out (which they didn't even mention that this year). I'll try to buy one when RE7 comes out but none of the tech demos are really appealing and a lot of them don't have favorable reviews, the ones that do have outstanding reviews but they are still short tech demos at the end of the day.

I'm pretty sure the companies involved haven't deliberately spent millions of dollars in R&D to release something that they don't want people buying.

ApocalypseShadow3484d ago

It's like playing wack a mole with opinion articles. Maybe there will be a VR version with a big mallet to smash em back where their came from.

New technology is never cheap. Prices always come down over time. New software is just a starting point and with sales leads to bigger and better experiences.

More companies are getting involved which is good for the platform. Expecting it to fail when they just launched is jacked up negativity.

Artemidorus3484d ago

It won't fail it will die down and rise again with new improved VR.

It's too early to declare it's a regular thing like a controller hence why right now it's a gimmck.

ninsigma3484d ago

Can't have the vr we all dreamed of without starting from somewhere.

Artemidorus3484d ago

Exactly which is why I class it as a gimmick until the future says different.

kraenk123484d ago (Edited 3484d ago )

You're so missing out..haven't seen people have this much fun with gaming for decades.

Artemidorus3483d ago

I've tried VR it's something I don't need

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing12d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9212d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit12d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing12d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9212d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
