That's the thing. A singular platform principal means someone has to have ultimate control. Sure, maybe it could be a conglomerate of console makers or whatever, but ultimately, someone is going to have to facilitate it all.

Since all these companies make more money off their services, and ultimately, the software licensing fees, why would they share....particularly since it would mean there would have to be some sort of equilibrium to overall hardware and software sales across the platforms before it was even considered.

The thing about console "singularity" is that it would actually restrict new competition, and allow way too much power to a single governing body of console makers to dictate the way the industry progresses. With competition, we get different avenues to some degree, and the market itself decides what it likes.

We don't need a singular path going forward, and having such a thing is actually probably not that great for us consumers. Would anyone here be comfortable with either MS or Sony running the entire show? Aren't the obvious pitfalls of that virtual monopoly something we would mostly protest? Why wold both of them running the show be any better.
