Nintendo Switch Will Bring ‘Hardcore’ Crowd Back Into the Fold

The feeling experienced by most was that the Wii and Wii U weren't serious consoles, and that Nintendo were incapable of appealing to the hardcore crowd. After today's Nintendo Switch reveal, that feeling has changed. #gamerprofessionals #nintendo #nintendoswitch

highly unlikely ...Nintendo Switch is the absolute gimmick console aiming even- they -dont -know -where ..except japan of course and some younger ages ....every other market has already made a regular console choice ...i ll pass and probaly the majority of regular gamers even the so called 'casuals' ...i say it again good luck Nintendo (they say making for 3rd time the same mistake is also the last and deadly one

Gustertote3492d ago

You don't think it's less of a gimmick than the Wii or Wii U? I've been a console gamer for all my life, but only really Xbox and PS. I abandoned Nintendo after Gamecube, but now really feel they've addressed most if not all the criticism of their past two consoles. It's different, sure, but not gimmicky.

fr0sty3491d ago

Nintendo misses out on the hardcore crowd because this console is nowhere near as powerful as the current gen systems, and the current gen systems are on the brink of mid-gen updates that are making them even more powerful. As a handheld, it may do well, since it's pretty much got the market to itself other than 3DS. As a console, not so much.

DarthZoolu3491d ago

It's gimmicky because we asked for power and games. We want games that take advantage of all we've learned about gaming since 1980. I really really wanted to see a large scale Metroid game on a powerful console. They need to make games for PC at least.

Mr Marvel3491d ago

Abandoning Nintendo after GameCube... that was a smart choice imo.

NES, GB, SNES, GBA, GameCube, DS... all GREAT systems.
For me it went downhill after that with Wii being complete garbage, 3DS being disappointing despite a few great games, Wii U having pretty much no support despite being home to (by far) the best Mario Kart game.

Admittedly I don't regret buying my Wii U, but only because my fiancee and I have had so much fun playing Mario Kart 8 (with Classic Pro controllers) and she isn't even a gamer.

Rippcity3491d ago

@DarthZoolu I'm totally with you man. I don't know what gamers are asking for this but I'm definitely not one of them. I agree with @fr0sty in that as a handheld, it could potentially do very well, as there is really no one else other than iOS and Android in the mobile gaming space, but what the hardcore crowd is looking for is not gimmicks and I hate to say it but the console is as gimmicky as it can get. It's essentially what the Wii U should have been and the Wii U is heavily touted as a gimmicky console. The hardcore crowd just wants good games and we aren't going to put aside our expectations of what a good game is supposed to be because Nintendo thinks performance, online and graphics aren't that important. A Metroid Prime reboot with single player and multiplayer would be my dream come true and I'm sure if Nintendo had those types of experiences on their console, many of the hardcore fans would be more than interested to give the console a try.

Calling it a gimmick console means nothing. Every product, gaming or not, has some sort of gimmick. Gimmicks are what give a product an "oooh that's different, I want to experience it" feel, and help hook customers. Releasing any system without some sort of gimmick gives people the feeling of "Why is it necessary for me to buy that?"

The difference now is that the gimmick is relevant, and is something that causes the switch to target not only its home console consumer base, but also its handheld consumer base. Nintendo handhelds have always done EXTREMELY well, both in terms of sales and games, so this will likely have a similar level of success, if not more than previous Nintendo handheld systems and home consoles combined.

We just need to find out more about what games this system will have. Mario, Zelda Port, Mario Kart, Splatoon Port, and Skyrim Port are all well and good, but I want to see what else is in store.

Gustertote3492d ago

I agree completely, but the word "gimmick" has negative connotations for a lot of people. Perhaps we should go all marketing-speak and say that every product has a Unique Selling Point? :D

Lightning Mr Bubbles3491d ago (Edited 3491d ago )

I don't know about that. Without the portable capabilities what is Nintendo Switch? As a stand alone home console would it be able to compete with PS4 or XBOX One? I kind of don't think so, it's looks like it could be a cool "all in one" console that is more aimed at a casual audience. I think it will be successful and if it sells good maybe it will get more serious third party support, but I don't see myself wanting to play Red Dead Redemption 2 on Nintendo Switch over PS4. It's cooler than the Wii for sure, the Wii was total waggle controller gimmick garbage. At least to me, the Nintendo Switch does seem a bit better for true gamers than the Wii did. But will it compete with PS4 and XBOX One as a home console to serious gamers? I kind of doubt it.

kenwonobi3491d ago

I think it will compete. Let's wait till we found out what the power of the console is first. If it's on par with Xbox One then it's certainly a player now. I love the idea of that portable screen with those removable controls. Then playing it on a stand somewhere. Then putting it back to play on a TV. I like it's ideas. I wish I could do this to PS4 pro games or Scorpio. Their design is perfect. A real good solution for console handheld games.

rjason123491d ago

You guys are a broken record, always calling stuff gimmicks, like it makes you better than other people.

lastking953491d ago

Calling something a gimmick isnt an insult or a bad thing although many do use it that way. Gimmicks do sell products

Omnislashver363491d ago (Edited 3491d ago )

Still depends on the performance. If they're getting Xbox One level power out of that thing, you can be sure Nintendo games are going to shine on it. And you know how many 2nd and 3rd parties have been waiting for that kind of power out of a Nintendo machine?

Nintendo breeds a very different audience, with a very different art style as well: Pixar graphics for most games? Anime style graphics for most games? Cartoon style graphics? Nintendo far outranks these audiences than the other machines. Even Sony.

We'll see how things improve. I for one was interested in Mario, Mario Kart, Skyrim looked gorgeous, and Zelda looked the same as Wii U.

So that's 3/4 games I was looking at doing good. NBA looked well and extremely impressive for a handheld as well. I'm keeping my eye on this. Getting back on the topic, yes, Nintendo has a hardcore crowd, and for their type of games, this might just work. I'm interested in seeing what this will do for them. Albeit, I wish there were slightly more graphics, but I haven't gotten a good look yet.

conanlifts3491d ago (Edited 3491d ago )

I would classify myself as a more hardcore gamer and its likely i will buy it. Also i showed the reveal trailer to my son who instantly wanted one.

lastking953491d ago

Yes vr in general is a gimmick. Anything that is simply an add on to the main item is a gimmick. Stop thinking it's an insult.

nitus103491d ago

The PSVR can display VR games and at the moment those games are specific to the PS4, however it can also be used to display the output of the PS3, WiiU, XB1 and even the PC in cinema mode: http://www.playstationlifes...

I think I would call it a display device unless people call a TV or monitor a gimmick

XanderZane3491d ago

I'll pass until I see some new games and not older titles playing on it. Besides Zelda, what else is launching for the Nintendo Switch? What will be the price of the system be? What are the specs. Still a lot of unanswered questions.

xfiles20993491d ago

Wrong look at all the third party support this will have adult syle games the video they showed had no kids which showed me they are not targeting kids anymore this is going to be great for gamers

Gustertote3491d ago

That's a good point. Like the article mentions, Nintendo are changing their style of marketing from younger audiences and families to older gamers. And dog walkers.

conanlifts3491d ago (Edited 3491d ago )

Gusterote they have to show dog walkers. How else will they sell nintendogs shift. They are also adding pickapoop dlc to it. This is their new cleaner planet line as way of moving on from wii fit.

nitus103491d ago

In news of the future, a "dog walker" and a van full of frat boys were involved in a serious accident and are all in hospital in a serious condition. When police investigated they found that they were all playing Pokemon Go and according to witnesses had just captured a rare one when the accident occurred.

The driver of the van was not injured but shaken and has been sent to a home for the bewildered mainly because he keeps shouting out that "I used to be an adventurer but I got an arrow in the knee" and every now and then the name "Dovahkiin" is mentioned. Police would like to contact this person name "Dovahkiin" since he could be a close relative.

The dog has been awarded a sanity medal for not chasing after an imaginary creature. 😉

-Foxtrot3491d ago

I thin it looks pretty neat but not sold until more info comes

I want a bundle where we get the normal controller included

kenwonobi3491d ago

I couldn't disagree more. If this thing can play Xbox One and PS4 3rd party games on the go? Then it's instantly better than those two systems. If it has online games too on its main console. It is great right now but we need to learn it's online plan, hardware ability, and support. If it has those things it's gonna do great.

Gaming_Cousin3492d ago

Hardcore gamers in my view are gamers who spend a s**t ton of time gaming. It doesn't matter what product it is.

Gustertote3491d ago

Yeh that's part of it, but it seems that there's been a division between the type of game a hardcore gamer plays and what a casual gamer plays. I know it's dumb, but it's just the labels they've been stuck with.

Gaming_Cousin3491d ago

I agree that it is dumb too.

Like if I played say Animal Crossing 12 hours a day and stay up all night on other days, how the hell is that not hardcore? Oh because there isn't guts splattering all over the screen? Because the screen is small?

Lightning Mr Bubbles3491d ago (Edited 3491d ago )

Then people obsessed with their Nintendo 3DS are hardcore gamers? Hardcore is not the right word then but you know what they mean. The traditional gamers, you know the core gamers who play consoles at home on HDTV's and play story driven and online games like Grand Theft Auto, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, Dead Rising, The Last of Us, Gears of War, Call of Duty, The Last Guardian, Fallout 4, Destiny, Bloodborne, Dark Souls 3, all those core games that usually retail at $59.99 on release. Not gamers who play Wii sports or cooking mama, Wii fit, Animal crossing, of play Nintendo 3DS while they are at the mall or anywhere else. Those are gamers also, and they might even be hardcore(they might be into their games a lot) but it's clearly not what they mean by "hardcore" in this case They are talking about the traditional core gamers.

hells_supernova3491d ago

I agree with that but I'm not spending money on a console that has only shown old games that work on wii u and six year old remasters.

conanlifts3491d ago (Edited 3491d ago )

From a business perspective the hardcore gamer that matters plays heaps of games. Which means they will keep spending each month.
If a gamer put 3000 hours into skyrim it is of less importance to them than the guy who puts 2000 hours into a mix of 20 games.
Buy the way im not disagreeing with you, just adding something extra to what you said.

Gustertote3491d ago

You're right; both of those examples I would describe as being a hardcore gamer, or just a 'core' gamer. I think I could have highlighted the fact that the trailer showed a wide variety of different genres of games, telling us that Nintendo are definitely aiming for those who pour thousands of hours on a wide mix of games.

paddy953491d ago

No third party support = no thanks. Red dead 2 will never end up on this turd.

Gustertote3491d ago

Somehow, I don't think Nintendo would have gone ahead with this reveal if they weren't near 100% sure that they could rectify the mistakes of their past, and secure a butt-load of 3rd party support. Obviously, I don't know for sure how it will pan out, but it looks promising at the moment.

_-EDMIX-_3491d ago

What is Nintendo's mistakes actually have to do with something like Red Dead Redemption 2? Regardless of Nintendo's efforts many third parties may still find a reason to not bring their titles to their platform.

sk8ofmnd3491d ago

Agreed lol. These nintendo fanboys think that tiny device will offer xb1 level graphics. As its been said by the know the docking station has no additional power. Just there for connection of the tv and recharging purposes

jholden32493491d ago (Edited 3491d ago )

Who said anything about having Xbox one level graphics? The only fanboys I see here are butthurt Sony and PlayStation gamers who are threatened by a console that looks cool and appealing and they don't want to admit it. So they revert back to the one thing they can lord over Nintendo and that is "power". As long as it's not as powerful than they can just automatically write it off and dismiss it as garbage.

Maybe it's as powerful as PS4. Maybe just as powerful as Xbox. Heck maybe it's barely over Wii U. In the end what does it really matter? The games are looking great in the trailer, do you get to play them on the go or on the TV, that's a very appealing concept.

The fanboy is strong on this site. When I see a console I like I buy it. I love my Xbox One. Love that BC and Lost Odyssey that was just added. I love my PS4, and VR is mindblowing. I love the concept of this new Nintendo console, will definitely be there day one. But the fanboys are always the ones who are so quick to shout gimmick or turd or this console sucks. And every normal non-biased a gamer can see it for what it is except the fanboys with that mindset. Fanboys never actually think they are actually fanboys, and they always point to everyone else.

wonderfulmonkeyman3491d ago

Take-Two, Rockstar's parent, is already on board with the Switch, so it likely will show up there.
Stay salty.

Bytor3491d ago

It looks pretty cool but it's not family friendly and it needs a locking mechanism on it.

sk8ofmnd3491d ago

The know just confirmed the docking station has no extra processing powerz and the video of the nx playing skyrim cpuld be false as the devs have confirmed no support for the system as of yet. Those who believe the power in that tiny handheld can support next gen games are setting themselves up for disappointment. I was hoping for more from nintendo but this seems like another gimicky underpowered piece of shit.

wonderfulmonkeyman3491d ago (Edited 3491d ago )

So you think it's a piece of shit?
Well guess what, troll? It supports Unreal 4, an engine core gamers swear by.
So by saying that, you're basically saying anything that's got specs capable of supporting games made with Unreal 4 is a piece of crap.
Including PS4 and XB1.
And to that, I say **** you, and your irritatingly ignorant elitism.
The system has the power to get all the games the XB1 and PS4 are getting.
It proved that today, and you're running SCARED because of it.

Stay salty.
The rest of us are going to Switch on some fun, right alongside the rest of the consoles we love, while you wallow in your pathetic hate and misery.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio13d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing13d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9213d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit13d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing13d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9213d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
