New Xbox One S Gets "The Best-Selling Console in America" Commercial and Slightly Different UK Ad

The Xbox One has been outselling the PS4 in the NPD rankings for a few months, and Microsoft came out with a quite aggressive commercial titled “Xbox One: The best-selling console in America.”

This was blatant false advertising and they only changed the advertising after it released even though they were aware of it well before that.

Gazondaily3376d ago (Edited 3376d ago )

Strictly speaking they aren't lying. It just comes off as desperate. But I guess they are leveraging whatever they can.

Abriael3376d ago

It's certainly an interesting exercise of skirting the limits of what you can and cannot say in advertisement. The difference with the English one is a good example of what isn't allowed outside of the US.

Mr Pumblechook3376d ago (Edited 3376d ago )

The ad sums up Phil Spencer's modus operandi perfectly... SPIN.

dedicatedtogamers3376d ago

I guess the real question is what happened to Phil Spencer's comments only 6 months ago about "not using sales to track success"?

Oh, Flip Flop Phil is at it again? And people wonder why some gamers don't trust Microsoft...

http://www.dualshockers.com...

solideagle3376d ago

its pretty strange when Sony does it they are evil and Phil also said he doesn't care about selling units, his focus is on games and quality. Its like they are contradicting themselves with this ad.

drunkenspy0073376d ago

I does seem to be a desperate attempt.

headblackman3376d ago

@ Septic

it's not desperation. it's business! all companies do this as a way of highlighting their strong points. The haters are the only one's that wanna label it anything more that such. anyone can over exaggerate anything and anyone when it comes to demonizing something or someone. it's seems like the hardest thing in life now days is to give credit to an achievement and just leave it there without turning it into a backhanded compliment or some kind of joke. ms has a product. it's selling well. the end!

Christopher3376d ago

***it's not desperation. it's business! all companies do this as a way of highlighting their strong points.***

It's both. Marketing is a desperate business of selling half-truths and lies. Everyone does it, MS just comes off as more desperate than the current competition at this time. Last generation Sony was doing the same thing.

AngelicIceDiamond3376d ago

@Dedicated well where are the total numbers for Xbox then? No where still so what are you talking about? MS is going overboard here imo I guess they're just using that to advertise for the holidays nothing really wrong with that but it does come off as desperate.

3376d ago
3376d ago
BitbyDeath3376d ago

Ninty should promote the Wii U as the best selling console in the world and then cite their Japanese numbers.

S2Killinit3376d ago

Half truths, MS's greatest strategy.

Fatal-Aim3376d ago (Edited 3376d ago )

This is so desperate

It hasn't surpassed the PS4 in it's own region (gap is likely at 1.55 to 1.6 million for PS4 as it originally was at 1.8 around June 2016), and it has never won a single month globally -- putting THAT gap at a 20 million lead in the PS4's favor.

Where is it the best selling console again?

iTechHeads3375d ago

PS4 is the best selling console in America. The title of that video ad is a flat-out lie.

EyeAmTJ3375d ago

why are people blaming this on Phil Spencer?

Kryptix3375d ago

Not just desperate, but pathetic. Phil also talked about how they are not in direct competition against the PS4, but when the moment they manage to outsell it in the US, now they are sales wise.

Gotta go full spin mode for when the Pro comes out next month. I guess they found out that people who were buying the Xbox One S, a good chunk of them were already Xbox owners. Not good for market share growth.

LastCenturyRob3375d ago

Desperate? So when the all important Christmas season is coming and they have been the number one selling system in the US for months now they shouldn't advertise that? It would be nuts not to.

MRMagoo1233375d ago

@eyeamj

he gets all three credit when things go right do why not?

3375d ago
GamingIVfun3375d ago (Edited 3375d ago )

It's another of the many things that make Microsoft and Xbox look like desperate douche bags and I so want them to stop doing things that make them look like douche bags. I buy their product because one of hobby's is playing videos games and I like some of their exclusives but the constant BS, half truths, over hype, moving the goal post, and the fanboys praising everything Microsoft does to their own detriment just gets on my nerves and makes me not want to support them with my purchases.. Another thing that is annoying is Microsoft talking about the competition as much as they do their own product, doesn't help them in any way, stick to talking about your product, talk about it in a confident way, don't make statements about your product that is not true and you can't deliver on, stop giving the competition attention.

Fanboys will say that Sony fanboys do the same, hasn't been my experience, mostly are equally as critical to Sony as they are to Microsoft. Go to Sony forums and you will see.

ninsigma3375d ago

It is lying though. They aren't the best selling console in America because despite the last 3 NPD wins, they are still behind in overall sales. As usual, Microsoft completely twisting it. And people wonder why some don't trust them??

UltraNova3375d ago (Edited 3375d ago )

This is getting ridiculous... MS should really start marketing their console based on its pros not its obvious cons.

First they need to at least surpass PS4 in total sales (in the US) then retract their no sales reporting statement and then pump their chests.

Everyone knows they're stretching the truth here why do this and risk damaging their product's image even further?

Do they really beleive that they'll be ontop when the Pro releases???

3375d ago
IGiveHugs2NakedWomen3375d ago (Edited 3375d ago )

I'm still trying to figure out why the marketing team for the Xbox division still have jobs. Clearly, the Xbox One S was the best selling console for the last 3 months, but it isn't the best selling console in the United States.

@solideagle
Sony has never come out and publicly dismissed the importance of sales numbers. Microsoft has, REPEATEDLY.

@DAEMONIFEAR
"The cheapest amd best option is the XB1s"
It's not the cheapest option since the base model is the same as the PS4. Secondly, "best" depends on what you're looking for in a gaming console:

4K Blu-ray vs Exclusives that can only be played on a PS4

Xbox One S is roughly 40% smaller than the OG model, no?

On topic: Best selling console In America? Does that mean Xbox One has surpassed PS4 lifetime sales or is this just a misleading ad?

Edit: @TGGJustin
2 million behind in America ? That's big.
Misleading ad it is.

@Abriael
If Sony made a similar ad tomorrow, which of the two companies would be telling the truth?

@Christopher and Ju

Thanks for sharing your understanding of console marketing.

@ShowanW

I can't, I don't have an Xbox S. But I believe you.

TGGJustin3376d ago

It means they outsold the PS4 in July, August, and September so they think they are the best selling. They are still almost 2 million units behind.

Abriael3376d ago

Best *selling* indicates the present, grammatically, so it's technically not wrong. Technically.

Ju3376d ago (Edited 3376d ago )

Both...because in marketing the context is not static. The goal posts move with every statement and nobody defines what something means without defining in which environment that applies. The english language being vague in that regard is perfect for such things.

Christopher3376d ago (Edited 3376d ago )

***If Sony made a similar ad tomorrow, which of the two companies would be telling the truth?***

Both. Marketing is like statistics. In statistics, you can adjust the numbers to sell whatever point of view you want. In marketing, you can adjust the definition of what something means to sell whatever point of view you want.

XBO S: The only true 4k console due to having a 4k BD player that upscales natively to 4k.
PS4 P: The only true 4k console due to having a handful of games that run in native 4k, upscales to 4k better than the competition, and can stream in 4k.

Neither is right or wrong. Both are misleading and prey on how misleading they are to sell consoles. No one has established what a 'true 4k console' is, so both can sell their own definition of it.

ShowanW3376d ago

i have both a One S and a Phatty...

i can prove the One S about 35% - 40% smaller than the phatty... can you???

choujij3376d ago

Wait.... wait, wait wait....

They're talking about sales of their console again? I'd love to know the official numbers. :P

rainslacker3376d ago

@Chris

"Marketing is like statistics. In statistics, you can adjust the numbers to sell whatever point of view you want. In marketing, you can adjust the definition of what something means to sell whatever point of view you want. "

So basically, marketing is just like fan boy console war discussions without the outright lies and extreme hyperbole?

UltraNova3375d ago

@Rain
Marketing is more like harcore fanboys trying to appear neutral in a console war discussion when the only thing they wanna do is to lash out at the 'opposition.

ShowanW3376d ago

@NextGenCeo...

Prove them wrong...
Microsoft knows how many games that are on Xbox, that arent on Playstation or Nintendo...

Veneno3376d ago

They are most likely including timed exclusives like Tomb raider , inside, etc.....

uptownsoul3376d ago (Edited 3376d ago )

@Veneno

They are absolutely using back compat games in that total...Same thing with the 1000 games. If you just count current gen games, PS4 has way more than XB1 (in total games & exclusives)

Red_Renegade3376d ago

showan, why are you defending them so hard?

Aenea3376d ago (Edited 3376d ago )

https://en.wikipedia.org/wi...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wi...

Over 100 exclusives is correct if they indeed add timed and console exclusives.

Still the PS4 has way more, Sony could make a add saying "has over 1200 games and nearly 500 exclusives"...

I find it odd they say it the way they do tho, it's correct, it's the only current gen console with less than 1000 games so yes, it's the only console with "nearly 1000 games" :)

XanderZane3375d ago

They are talking about all the B/C games I'm sure. 1000 games on the XB1? There isn't a 1000 games on the XB1 unless you include the B/C games with all those Indies as well.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen3375d ago (Edited 3375d ago )

@Showan

It's easy to prove Microsoft wrong when they make it so easy.
If you count the number of games that Microsoft considers to be "exclusive" it doesn't come out to be 100 games.

Now if you change that to "More 100 CONSOLE exclusives" then that would be fair to say. However, many gamers these days are savvy as well as frugal and don't see the value of owning a console when the same games can be played on PC.

Personally dont own an X1S so have no idea if it's actually 40% smaller. Pretty sure it is since I've seen them on store shelves.

But Cloud Power has been proven in games like Titanfall. Crackdown 3 is the actual debut of true Cloud power.

Till now it's been used in games like Titanfall and Halo 5 for running dedicated servers and AI computations. Yet to have whole multiplayer worlds running on the servers analyzing destruction and all computations. Which is the purpose of Crackdown 3.

And Sony does the same stuff, same with Nintendo. Same with every other big player that markets a product. False advertising is kind of the gold standard today.

rainslacker3376d ago

Cloud servers have been proven since the advent of the MMO, which used the same principals to deliver persistent online games by calculating AI, players position, world events, etc.

What hasn't been proven is it's ability to deliver on complex computational processes involved in physics, lighting, or graphics rendering, which is the premise that MS has tried to sell with cloud power. CD3 will be the apparent first showing of this ability.

DAEMONIFEAR3376d ago

Kinect isn't tied xb1 at all get your facts right

Veneno3376d ago

You mean Microsoft get your facts straight because they were the ones claiming xbone can't work with out Kinect but they lied.

RomanPSX3376d ago

Cry me a river. Wow you sound desperate.

Muzikguy3376d ago (Edited 3376d ago )

Microsoft is always doing stuff like this. I was just talking about this the other day. They are very deceitful. The second they find anything remotely good they roll with it and PR HYPE MACHHINE the hell out of it like it's the cure for cancer or something. This company is so full of lies. Wasn't it that long ago they were telling us they weren't using sales to gauge their success? What changed and why? This isn't the first time they've done this.

Sometimes I really feel bad for this country. They'll fall for anything it seems

uth113376d ago

I always love how every version of Windows touts that it's the "fastest ever". But it's only faster because they upped the required specs and forced you to upgrade your PC

Muzikguy3376d ago

@uth

Yes lol. Not to mention if you don't upgrade the PC to those specs it's actually quite slower than the previous version. You're very right there. I actually hadn't thought of that before

XanderZane3375d ago

Sony and Nintendo have done the same thing in the past. There have been lots and lots of lies from all 3 companies. Sony has done it a lot more then Microsoft and there is tons of proof of that all over the internet. Weird how hypocritical fanboys seem to forget this and believe that only Microsoft has ever lied about something. All 3 companies (even SEGA) have lied about many things in the past. None of them can be fully trusted, which is why it's senseless to be loyal to any one of them. All of them have their own brand of PR SPIN to get their product noticed and into hands of consumers. So if you think it's only M$ you are completely wrong.

ShowanW3376d ago

@Ashlen...

I have a Xbox One Phatty and a One S... and it is indeed 40% smaller...

no disrespect... itechheads.com is as very biased Sony site... im pretty sure you are well aware of that if your on n4g...

Rhythmattic3375d ago (Edited 3375d ago )

I think the confusion lies in the original statement and Picture made by MS saying/showning it was 40% the size of the OG One...
Obviously its 40% smaller... Big (pun intended) difference.

ZeroX98763376d ago (Edited 3376d ago )

@Ashlen

give them some rest, for once in a while they're on top in one region VS the world for a couple of months. No need to downplay it, Kudos to MS for coming back of this disastrous launch that was the original X1 with Kinect.

Plus they basically admitted their faults already, so let's see what they can bring to the table going forward. I don't have an X1, but I do have a PC and I'm impress with what they delivered for their long time PC fans in the last few months. I'm hoping for Halo 6 on PC :)

YAO-BLING3376d ago

LOL win 3 months due to selling the old ONE bundle cheap as dirt and decide to reclaim Sales.. wow.. didn't they MS would go this low. This is bad.. Michael Jackson bad.

Babadook73376d ago

You can add "Fastest selling Console November 2013" to that as well. They sold less than PS4 but came out a day later so it sold 'faster??'

stuna13376d ago

Bu bu but they don't come out tooting their little horns when they outsell Sony!? If the roles reverse again, which I'm pretty confident they will, then it'll be back to headshot kills, number of drifts and amount of cores extracted in Recore.

Microsoft are so predictable! And the only ones falling for their predictable tactics are????

rainslacker3376d ago

Yeah, probably. but they don't care. If they have the choice between staying true to their recent words, thus placating the demands that the internet gaming community may put on them, or using the information in a positive way to promote sales, they're going to go the route that promotes sales.

Personally, I've never seen the appeal of buying something just because it sells the most. Seems pretty dumb, and plays to the hive mentality inherent in wanting to appear to be part of something that other people are in the know about so they'll feel included. Poor way to spend $300-400 IMO, and always better to see what suits one best.

meche3343376d ago

Technically. Right now it is the best selling console in America. It has sold better in America for the past like 3 months so. Technically there's nothing wrong with it

NeoGamer2323376d ago

And Sony has never lied about their stuff?

Seriously assessing any company on the planet on whether they lie or not?

Every single company on the planet lies.

rainslacker3376d ago (Edited 3376d ago )

It's not technically false. It does show that they will go against their stated policies of not discussing sales numbers though....which I'm sure we all recall them saying they weren't going to talk about anymore because number of active users was more important. Makes you wonder why they'd use something like sales numbers in their actual advertising and just how much we can rely on them to stay true to their word when they make statements.

At least any rational person should see it that way.

Maybe the PR department didn't get the message though, because appearing to be the best selling console does make people take notice. Would be funny though if Sony decided to throw that back in their face somehow.

Granted, it's not uncommon for MS to use the "in America" qualifier. They did it last gen to.

UCForce3375d ago (Edited 3375d ago )

Now this is where I think MS will get cocky even more than ever when Project Scorpio come out. Way back in 2014, MS didn't care about sales and now in 2015 it is matter, isn't it ? I'm not saying is bad or anything. But it's very questionable.

threefootwang3375d ago

King_Lothric3376d ago

DeadlyOreo3375d ago (Edited 3375d ago )

Don't worry. This type of stuff only hurts Microsoft's image. Suprisingly, most people actually have a good idea of what's going on in the game industry and they know full well PS4 is top in every country world wide.

OB1Biker3375d ago (Edited 3375d ago )

Not really. Numbers sold in a year or in a month do not equal to how it's selling right now. So spinning the 'best selling' as of 'right now in the present tense' is not working. You can only refer for sure to the past numbers. Present tense can only refer for sure as total number as of now unless it's been proven to be an important trend statistically in recent number but that's not the case at all. They play with people ignoring xbox was in the lead in September with only 48k more than PS4 and that's not enough to establish for sure it's currently selling more on a constant basis

KwietStorm_BLM3375d ago

I think you missed my point if you think you're disagreeing with me.

OB1Biker3375d ago

Sorry I probably wasnt very clear.
I meant, they are lying :)

KwietStorm_BLM3375d ago

Except they're not lying. There's always double talk and half truths in matketing. That's how it works, and that's why there's always fine print and the guy who talks at x5 speed at the end of an ad. Cell carriers says they have the fastest this and most reliable that. They're talking about certain parts of the country or most current tests ran. TV shows say #1 rated show. They're talking about top rated show on certain day of the week at a specific time slot. They're not lying, it's just very specific. Xbox has been top seller in the US *currently,* so that's what they're referring to, not overall sales. Hence, opportunistic.
