PSVR Aim Controller is the best VR controller yet (hands-on Video) - CNET Preview

Cnet reports: "The new PlayStation VR Aim Controller looks more like a balloon animal than a weapon of war. But as soon as I placed the PlayStation VR headset on my head, it morphed into a futuristic assault rifle so easy to aim, it almost felt like it could read my mind. In Farpoint, the initial PlayStation VR shooting game that will arrive alongside the Aim controller, I traversed a desolate, dusty alien landscape shooting space spiders. They lept through the air like Half-Life's infamous headcrabs in an attempt to eat my brains, or shot huge globes of noxious acid to melt my flesh and bones. But with the Aim, I could pick them off with precision before they even hit the ground.

Mind you, I've played some fantastic shooting games on the HTC Vive and with the upcoming Oculus Touch controllers, too. This was different. Nothing I've played for the Rift or Vive's two separate controllers has felt quite this intuitive."

Great news, but we all know the thing about peripherals. I got this fancy PSmove gun peripheral when Killzone 3 came out http://gearmedia.ign.com/ge... and there wasn't any other game that used it. So my question is, will there be other VR shooters coming out that will use the peripheral if not it quickly becomes a lemon once the game is completed.

S2Killinit3495d ago (Edited 3495d ago )

Your answer is "Yes". I saw another article on this that confirmed the "Aim" controller will in fact be compatible with future FPS games on PSVR. This thing and Farpoint could be the Killer App for PSVR, from what we are hearing.

daynnight3653494d ago

Yep, I can cosign that I saw it as well.
It sux that the other gun the OP was talking about more than likely won't be compatible. I have it and would've been nice to use, imo it looks better.

G20WLY3494d ago

The Sharpshooter was better supported than people think, it just wasn't well advertised. It worked GREAT! You could play it with Killzone 3, SOCOM 4, Time Crisis 4, The Shoot, MAG, Dead Space Extraction off the top of my head, but basically ANY game that let you shoot with the move controllers...which will, of course, be EVERY FPS game that comes out on PSVR!

So on that (solid, I think?!) logic, support won't be an issue for the PSVR gun :^)

Obscure_Observer3493d ago

@S2Killinit

Interesting. Care to provide the source/link?

bunt-custardly3495d ago

Will it not be compatible (patched to work) with Until Dawn Rush of Blood and Brookhaven Experiment where you forfeit dual wielding in favour of better accuracy? But the mind boggles if this gun becomes compatible with Killzone VR or Resistance VR if either of those games ever get made.

S2Killinit3495d ago (Edited 3495d ago )

They didn't say anything about specific games. Only that the "Aim" is going to be compatible with any "future" FPS games on PSVR. That it will be the default controller if you will. Does that mean it will work with games without needing updates? I personally don't see why the games would need an update to function with the Aim, but I really can't say for sure.

maybe someone should submit that article.

Toon_Link3494d ago

I'm pretty sure a Sony rep said a while back that there's already a few games in development planning to use it. I can't remember where I read it but was happy to hear about it.

bouzebbal3494d ago

a multitude of move gun peripherals exist. and it's good to see there is a possibility to take them out of the attic.

Neonridr3495d ago

do we have an actual release date on this thing yet?

S2Killinit3495d ago (Edited 3495d ago )

only that it is arriving at the same time as FarPoint. That suggests it is coming this year before Christmas If I'm not mistaken. I could be wring though.

Neonridr3494d ago

yeah I did some digging after I published that comment and found that it's slated for January 2017 at this point.

S2Killinit3494d ago

Yes. I went looking for it as well. Some sites are saying it will be released along with FarPoint, then another site says FarPoint is comming before Christmas. But I also saw a playstationlifestyle article that said January 2017. So its sort of all over the place right now.

IamTylerDurden13494d ago

Farpiont is coming soon, it was advertised right along side Robinson on the PS Store and all of a sudden Robinson gets announced for November. I'd guess that within 3 weeks we get a December or January date.

Juiceid3494d ago

All the printed slips inside my Psvr games say 2017 unfortunately.

ninsigma3495d ago

Pretty sweet. I'll consider getting it after seeing how many other games are going to support it. It's totally going to add to the immersion though so I do hope I get to use it :D

S2Killinit3495d ago (Edited 3495d ago )

I think its so smart of them to take a minimalist approach with the design because it allows for maximum VR movement without restriction and without extra unnecessary weight, and allowing the controller to mimic any weapon you might be holding in the VR world without the controller in your hand disrupting the immersion by not "feeling" like your holding something other than what you are wholding in the VR world.

Damn that's for sure a run on sentence.

PS: does anyone else think this is the coolest thing they've seen in a long time? Or is it just me?

ApocalypseShadow3495d ago

It is cool. Minimalistic for maximum benefit in comfort and design.

People are going to complain they can't just use their Sharpshooter. But Sharpshooter was made for PS3 and PS move. Aim was made for PS4 and PSVR. They redesigned their gun controller to be less bulky and have both products of move and navigation into one controller.

Also means less controllers synced to your system as Sharpshooter required TWO products to be synced to your system. While Aim is ONE device synced to your system.

I plan to get Farpoint as soon as I can get it. Hopefully it's reseasonably priced with the Aim.

S2Killinit3494d ago (Edited 3494d ago )

Agreed. Good point on the synching explanation.
Also, I dont think anyone would miss the sharpshooter with its lag. The Aim provides 1:1 movement which is super important for VR. Im getting this with FarPoint on day 1.

Ps: I read that the Aim controller bundled with a copy of FarPoint will only cost 79.99.

kneon3494d ago

I'm sure I'm in the minority but I'd like it to be heavier. I played all of KZ3 with the previous version of this and it was incredibly accurate, too accurate in fact, it made it too easy.

No one will put up with a controller the same weight as a real assault rifle for long, but adding a couple of pounds more to the weight would make it more realistic and give you a better feel.

G20WLY3494d ago

I'm sure you could strap a weight to it easily enough, if you wanted?

ApocalypseShadow3494d ago

All you need is a little duck tape and some weights and you can make it as heavy as you want it to be.

kneon3493d ago

I may be better to just open it up and stuff all the empty spaces with playdoh. individual weights would probably give it an odd balance.

StormSnooper3493d ago

Apocalypse beat me to it. If you want it to be heavier, just wrap it with electric tape like a tennis racket. Simple. Done. (:

daynnight3653494d ago

Yep, I agree. And I'm glad I haven't seen anyone comment on the looks of the gun in this section. Imo it doesn't really matter as long as it works properly.
Btw yeah that was quite a run-on

S2Killinit3494d ago

lol, I could have fixed it, but I was lazy and I was tired. I looked back at my sentence and I was like Woo man.

IamTylerDurden13494d ago (Edited 3494d ago )

The reason they took a minimalist approach with the design is so it's lightweight ect, but it's also so it can potentially mimic many other things including tools and things that may not necessarily be guns. It's smart, and anyone criticising the looks is missing the point. You can't even see the peripheral while you are in VR, it only matters what it looks like and how it functions in game.

StormSnooper3493d ago (Edited 3493d ago )

like a bow and arrow. But comfort in VR is very very important. Sony understands this.

italiangamer3494d ago

Damn, a better controller than the super expensive HTC & Oculus ones. Sony continues to claim their wizards status with PSVR and the Aim controller :D

S2Killinit3494d ago (Edited 3494d ago )

Exactely, and from what I've read, you can get the Aim + copy of FarPoint for only 79 bucks. If true, that is a great deal(basically your getting the game for free). I was expecting to dish out around 120-150 for it by itself.

UCForce3494d ago

And FarPoint is getting positive Preview.

Are a bunch of games, some of which are nearly 10 years old not one being from 2026. Barely one from 2025.

I do like the irony of the closing paragraph though, "Why VR Adventure Games are Thriving". Really buddy?

mooreneco2130d ago

That’s because it’s his favourite VR adventure games thus far, a great game always a great game regardless of age - Half life 2/ Ocarina of time - are old but still among the greatest games of all time. The irony of it is several are from last year, depending on platform, have you even played VR?
