Mafia 3 Review - IGN

A fantastic story and cast of characters are held down by some familiar, uninspired gameplay.

UCForce3514d ago (Edited 3513d ago )

That's all I need. A strong story that you care about character and understand the other. I will see myself about the gameplay. And I remember how people said GTA V story is somewhat weaker than GTA 4 story.

Edit : Look @PlayableGamez, I'm a gamer, too. But Defination of gaming is everything, not just gameplay. People can create video game whatever they like.

MMSalman3514d ago

Same. For me Story > Gameplay or even graphics.

PlayableGamez-3513d ago (Edited 3513d ago )

Dafuq? Are you guys gamers or what? A good story is cool, but gameplay is the most important element of video games. If you want a good story, go read a book or watch a TV series.

EmperorDalek3513d ago

@PlayableGamez- Doesn't have to be the case with all games. Games like Mass Effect, God of War 1, Metal Gear etc. will be remembered for their stories, even if the gameplay in all of them were excellent. Other games like Heavy Rain and TWD had gameplay to service the story, and they were well received.

UCForce3513d ago

I think is everything, not just once.

PlayableGamez-3513d ago (Edited 3513d ago )

@EmperorDalek
Metal Gear and Mass Effect have great gameplay.
Heavy Rain and TWD also have great gameplay due to it's decision making and puzzles.
I don't know what you are talking about. Gameplay is very important.
Nintendo has always put gameplay first and they build their IPs off of great gameplay with little to no story.
Yes gameplay is important most important.
In the case of Mafia III which is an open world game, the gameplay has to come first. This is a game that doesn't have a control setting. It heavily relies on cut scenes to tell it story. So to enjoy it as a game, it has to have great gameplay.

Red_Renegade3513d ago

people look for different things in games. i don't much care for games with crappy stories, cuz gameplay by itself won't make me want to keep playing. if that's what you like, fine. but don't say stupid stuff like read a book cuz you can't handle a good story.

EmperorDalek3513d ago

@PlayableGamez Okay sure, but you can't seriously say that you played TWD and Heavy rain primarily for the gameplay. They have solid gameplay, but the stories were the reason to play them. If they didn't have good stories, the gameplay wouldn't have held the games up, and they would have been received poorly.

In the case of Mass Effect and Metal Gear: Yes as I said, they have excellent gameplay. but they will be remembered for years and years because of their stories. If they had rubbish stories, they wouldn't be as highly regarded. That's the main reason why MGS5 didn't sit well with fans: it's story wasn't good enough, even though the gameplay was arguably the best in the series.

Gameplay needs to be there, but it doesn't need to be the focus.

RedDevils3513d ago

Go tell that to JRPG fans lol

bouzebbal3513d ago (Edited 3513d ago )

interesting MMSalman..
Story always over gameplay isn't the way i have it.
99% of the games have a cheesy story imo but if the gameplay is good then i'm glad.
You can have an unforgettable gaming experience regardless of the quality of story telling, and Nintendo games are the perfect examples of that, or even racing or sports games.
Graphics defninitely come last for me.

Don't get me wrong I love a good story but I can't get through a good story if it uses crapper filler gameplay to fill in what is in between the good parts of the game .

I can play a fun game with a bad story though. I still want a really good story but I dont see how someone could enjoy something thats not fun to play with just a good story. If that's the case might as well just watch all the cutscenes togeather on a youtube video.

UCForce3513d ago

Jesus Christ, I look Mafia 3 gameplay video. It's good enough.

nucky643513d ago

uh, it is fun to play...... I'm about 15 hours in and I (along with several of my buddies) are all having a great time with the game.

warriorcase3513d ago

@nucky64 yea same here. Really enjoying the story and the inbetween missions are a little repetitive but atleast im infiltrating places amd fighting in them rather than just fetch quests. It seems like most people hating on it at this point and they are just jumping on the hate bandwagon becaise everyone else is. Its far from an ugly or bad game. Could it have been better in aspects, yes of course but god damn people are just getting a little carried away with their emotions trying to fit in. 7.5 seems like a pretty reasonable score

TheOptimist3513d ago

Yup. I play Just Cause 2 till this date, though it has some of the weakest story ever. I don't like games with story and no innovative gameplay. Still have to complete Rise of the Tomb Raider even though I have had it since May, got bored in the first 2-3 hours

nucky643513d ago

for what it's worth, you won't regret playing - I'm about 15 hours in and I love it - the story is excellent and I'm having a blast with the game.......don't listen to the haters - I doubt they've played the game.

UCForce3513d ago

Ah, thank you,my friend. I'm glad to hear.

FunkMacNasty3513d ago

I totally agree. Definitely a good game, despite its shortcomings. It's definitely worth a playthrough for fans of the mafia series and open world action games.

ChronoJoe3513d ago

The gameplay isn't bad at all it's just the mission structure is a bit repetitive. I actually prefer the gunplay in this game to GTAV.

Davemyrose5923513d ago

Hey man just beat game and want to tell you my honest opinion cuz I was soo routing for this game and I loved the setting and was immersed in the first 3 hours, however the grind is real in this game like too real this game is a 6.8 in my book I've played repetitive but this is a 30 hour hassle of a game and it's frustrating as hell

PlayableGamez-3513d ago

Definition of gaming is everything, not just gameplay. So everytime I jerk off too porn and eat a sandwich, I am playing a game. Got ya.

vegasgamerdawg3513d ago

If all you need is a strong story, here's a hint, read a book. Books are much better at story than games, games are much better at gameplay....just sayin.

The_Kills3510d ago

What's wrong with some of you people that say "Story > Gameplay" in a game? If you want story go watch movies, or better yet, if you want something premium, for the money you spend on these "games" you can subscribe to Netfilx/Showtime/Cinemax/HBO/S tarz and get the best stories you have ever seen.

Man, what oddities some of you people are.. Utterly perplexing.

Relientk773513d ago

I'm still on the fence, but will probably get it eventually

UCForce3513d ago

Well, I would say the gameplay is solid, but don't expect it has excellent gameplay.

Meltic3513d ago

Good Review. Like the developer said when they played the Alpha build last year in IGN first. '' We have a pretty strong story in Mafia 3'' TO bad that they did not do the other stuff to. Like More NPC's on screen. It's next gen, it should work. And allso do something fun with the NPC's. Meaby fight them in the middle of the street like in Mafia 2. Allso go into more shops, change clothes ? where the hell did they cut that out for.

TKCMuzzer3513d ago (Edited 3513d ago )

See thats were people differ. I can not stand all that rubbish in video games, it's just filler that eventually will drag the player away from the story. I did all that in GTA 5 but got so destracted with all the other stuff I did not complete the story as it doesn't get pushed on quick enough, meaning other games come out and it just drops off the radar.
Mafia 3 does push the story a long and that keeps me playing. Maybe this is just down to my time limits, I don't have countless hours to put into open word games so when one comes along which means I can complete the story in a reasonable amount of time without getting destracted by learning how to fly, trying on clothes etc it just suits me better.
This is why the reviews are either one way or another, people looking for more are disappointed but those looking for something that isn't to big are probably going to enjoy it more. Neither is right or wrong.
Plus your comment of it being 'next gen' is somewhat tunnel vision. Graphics have to be improved, maps are bigger, lighting is better, sound is better, next gen or not, when you are improving on everything from the last gen you are still faced with the same issues, hardware limitations. Now if they didn't up the textures etc etc then they probably could have hundreds of NPC's on screen but then everyone would be complaining about the graphics.
None of us are game devs so really can not make technical assumptions on why. I'm sure if they could stick more NPC's on the screen they would, trouble is, gamers want everything, there fore something will suffer.
I'm not an avid IGN fan but this review is in the right ball park for the game, it's an 8 for me but that's personal preference.

Jon_Targaryen3513d ago

So true... Its as if the game wants you to remember that Clay was the veteran the whole time... Well to be

nucky643513d ago

well, there are fun things to do/find. POSSIBLE SPOILER.................like in south downs. when drving around on missions you may come across illegal gambling houses with lots of enemies and LOTS of money to pick up - but it's a challenge to get the money and get out alive.

hiawa233513d ago (Edited 3513d ago )

A brotha knocking off mobsters. Good story, I actually like the gameplay, time period, good game for my tastes. I am loving the game, but they need to fix the bugs. Really enjoying the soundtrack too.

nucky643513d ago

soundtrack is killer! what bugs are you seeing. I've had one gamecrash but that's it.

hiawa233513d ago

I have had a sound bug where if you put the game the in suspend mode, when you start back there is no sound unless you restart the game. There are graphical bugs especially if it is raining where the color seems to change and the rain appears to bleed into whatever it is raining on.

nucky643513d ago

bizarre. I haven't had that yet (fingers crossed)

RedDevils3513d ago

I have not encounter one bug, maybe I'm one of the luckiest person lol but the only thing I found it annoying is the mission checkpoint, other than that is a solid game.

DivineAssault 3513d ago

Was never interested in this anyway.. Im sure its fun so ill borrow it or something maybe

Mafia 3 Deserves A Little More Respect

More people should be making a trip to this bayou.

Agreed....game was fantastic. Especially as a person of color, I enjoyed the side missions.

Kakashi Hatake1409d ago

I'm Black myself, which is different from Lincoln who is bi racial. (It's trendy to ignore that mixed people are half White for some reason) What would color have to do with enjoying a game like this? Imagine if people playing God of War were like "Gee, I'm enjoying playing as a White person right now". If we want others to relate to things other than skin color, we have to start setting an example as "People of Color" (That term is so stupid btw)

InklingGirl1409d ago

I wonder if this comment will get removed like mine? It shouldn't but I'm just curious.

LucasRuinedChildhood1409d ago (Edited 1409d ago )

"What would color have to do with enjoying a game like this?"

Skin colour matters a lot in the story and setting of Mafia 3. It even affects the gameplay.

The comparison to God Of War doesn't make sense.

I'm Irish (as in, a person born in Ireland), and I'd probably enjoy a game where you can fight in the Irish War of Independence ... a bit more than the average Brit. lol. Who cares? If a British person "Imagine if ...", I'd just laugh.

LucasRuinedChildhood1409d ago (Edited 1409d ago )

*said "Imagine if ..."

Also, it is cool when you play an Irish character in a game who doesn't put on a leprechaun accent like Tom Cruise did. "Shannon! Tell me you like my hat!" https://youtu.be/eKrEVWGTuR...

Terry_B1409d ago

nah..its mediocre and repetitive.

Demetrius1409d ago (Edited 1409d ago )

I played it once and it was very frustrating compared to mafia 2 I like to enjoy games not get raged all up 😂😂

XbladeTeddy1409d ago

It was repetitive and boring. Not a good game at all.

Yi-Long1409d ago

The game looked interesting, and from the trailers it seemed it had a great soundtrack, but the buggy release (AI) and disappointing reviews made me pass on it. No idea if they ever fixed its shortcomings post-launch.

XbladeTeddy1409d ago

They could only polish a turd so much. Wasn't good at release and isn't good now.

MadLad1409d ago

Weakest game in the series.

AuraAbjure1409d ago

People said that about Wolfenstein:Youngblood. I played youngblood and it is a masterpiece and so awesome and entertaining and badass, with ray tracing too. Is Mafia 3 a great game on its own merit? I understand compared to the other Mafias, you feel it's weak.

MadLad1406d ago

I respectfully disagree.

GTA V, Mafia, and Red Dead Redemption 2 VR mods are dead – and Take 2 Interactive killed them

From VG247: "If you’ve been enjoying either Red Dead Redemption 2, GTA V, or Mafia: The Definitive Edition in VR thanks to some handy fan-made mods, we’ve got some bad news. Thanks to a DMCA claim by Take Two Interactive - the parent company of Rockstar Games and 2K - has led development on the most popular VR mods to grind to a halt.

This news comes via Luke Ross - the sole creator of a variety of VR mods for the aforementioned games - who released a lengthy post to his supporters. In it, he claims to have received a DMCA request from Take Two Interactive for his projects and that the company requested that he “remove all their copyrighted works from [his] Patreon page”. This was confirmed by Kotaku who reached out to Patreon directly."

Orbilator1412d ago

Get the mods on a torrent site and tell the world were they are.

Duke191412d ago

I mean, if he was modding a game that someone else built, and charging for it on patreon - this seems pretty cut and dry for a DMCA.

If he was not profiting from it in any way though, would be nice to let companies let this shit slide more often
