Is PSVR Sony's quietest launch ever?

PSVR launches next week, but it's a quiet affair compared to Sony's usual bombastic launches. Why is the company holding fire?

it's already sold out, so why waste money on ads for something that's sold out? Once they get more in stock for the next wave I'm sure we will see more ads.

Neonridr3519d ago

I think it's more because it doesn't appeal to everyone. Not everyone is willing to spend the price of a console on an accessory that they will only use some of the time. That's a pretty large investment to ask of a person.

that being said I am really looking forward to getting mine next week.

Overload3519d ago

Exactly. They are just keeping it low key and not over producing to avoid any major problems if it doesn't take to the mass market.

SeanScythe3518d ago

I debating on keeping mine or selling it since so many are going to be fighting to get them for the holiday.

Neonridr3518d ago

@SeanScythe - that's why you preorder 2 I guess.. ;)

Rimeskeem3518d ago

I've seen plenty of good ads in PSVR...

DeadlyOreo3518d ago

Their YouTube ads are everywhere, every time I open a video I see a quick Playstation Access advert. Word is definitely out there, but yeah, like some dude said above me why would they advertise it heavily when it's going to be out of stock? That wouldn't be smart.

rainslacker3518d ago

I think they're going to wait until it launches, then try to get the press to hype it up come the holiday season, at which point they'll likely start their media blitz.

Since it's still currently priced as a more "hardcore" type peripheral, there isn't much they have to do to get the word out to those customers, but come the end of November, we'll likely see some mainstream marketing if the press decides to pick it up as the hot thing for the holidays...which is possible since nothing else really exciting is coming out otherwise, and VR in general is starting to pick up steam with things like Gear VR and Googles new offering.

Ju3517d ago (Edited 3517d ago )

I think this is more like it's own platform. The library is completely new - and different from the current PS4 games. Sure, one needs a PS4 to play it, but the base is 40M. I need to get me one...unfortunately the Pro got in the way...and I spent to much money traveling...but, ya, birthday is in January :) I need Valkyrie! Or BF Tie fighter! Or DC VR!

rainslacker3517d ago

I would really like to get one. Been using one at work for stuff, and I've come to like it a lot.

I'm not in a great rush or anything, and work said I could borrow one if I can't get one at retail. Even if I had to wait it out some, it wouldn't be the end of the world. Will be a pretty full holiday for me as it is.

S2Killinit3518d ago (Edited 3518d ago )

I belive its because no 2D advertisement can sell you on what VR offers. The best advertisement is to put a VR headset on someone's head and let them experience it for themselves. Sony knows this, and they are waiting for word of mouth to take its course. No need to waste money on ads when you can show them.

PS: I wouldn't call 50 games in 2 months time "quiet" either.

Skywalker3333518d ago

is it sold out? where? In UK you can preorder it from every store without a problem and all stores say they will have available stock to sell.

I'm thinking that the lack of any marketing has to do with lack of interest so they are saving money.
hope they don't abandon it in one year like they did with PS Move. i love the technology, played for hours on the PS VR on E3 and am a strong believer but this lack of interest from Sony ticks me off.

BG115793518d ago

The total opposite in Paris.
They are making several sessions in different places in Paris were you can test the PSVR.
It's invit only, but anyone can get an invite.

There is no major publicity because of the nature of the product. How can you publicize the effect of VR using the usual media ? It's actually very tricky.

Skywalker3333518d ago

interesting. it so readily available in UK (even supermarkets like Tesco have stock for day 1 delivery) that i thought that there is no problem with getting it in your hands. Apparently UK is receiving more than it needs? who knows.
but for sth that is being released in a few days, there is no advertisement whatsoever. i am still getting it but i am kinda worried by this apathy from Sony.

Ju3517d ago

They have that here, too. At least in 4 stores through out the city every weekend, at e.g. Best Buy et all.

WiiU-Dude3517d ago

He covered that in the article, in fact you can make a case that that was the main thrust and al that followed were the reasons why.

The marketing and advertising machine won't kick into full gear until launch week, and then it'll subside until Christmas, when there'll be another big marketing push. However, SIE have 3 products that they'll be wanting to sell to consumers this holiday season - Playstation Slim, Playstation Pro and PSVR. It'll be interesting to see which one they put their marketing muscle behind, I'm guessing it'll probably be the PS4 Slim, i.e. the cheapest entry level option for the consumer entering the Playstation ecosystem.

EverydayGuy3518d ago

I'm guessing all of them since they all are in limited supply, can't get VR get Pro or vice versa and there always the slim version.

MasterCornholio3518d ago (Edited 3518d ago )

In Spain I haven't seen any PSVR ads yet. However I did see plenty advertising the new Slim model and informing the public they all PS4s support HDR.

PhoenixUp3518d ago

Nope the PSTV's was way quieter

Artemidorus3518d ago

Christmas is around the corner so you can bet Playstation throwing in the big guns of Playstation VR and Playstation Pro. You even have a new Slim and a stupidly cheap regular Playstation 4.

It's clear they are providing choices for then.

Markusb333518d ago

I wonder if Sony are trying to combine marketing ads to show ps4 pro, VR and the slim. Could be confusing with 3 adverts. You would imagine they at least group the consoles in one advert.

Artemidorus3517d ago

May even provide bundle packs too. Wait and see.

Are a bunch of games, some of which are nearly 10 years old not one being from 2026. Barely one from 2025.

I do like the irony of the closing paragraph though, "Why VR Adventure Games are Thriving". Really buddy?

mooreneco2144d ago

That’s because it’s his favourite VR adventure games thus far, a great game always a great game regardless of age - Half life 2/ Ocarina of time - are old but still among the greatest games of all time. The irony of it is several are from last year, depending on platform, have you even played VR?
