IGN: 9/9/99 @ 9 - The Dreamcast Launch

Nine years ago today, SEGA debuted the Dreamcast in North America to incredible fanfare and unprecedented sales. Within 24 hours, the Dreamcast had pulled $98 million into SEGA's piggybank. Reviews for launch titles like Soulcalibur, Ready 2 Rumble, and Power Stone were glowing. The PlayStation 2, GameCube, and Xbox were all way out on the horizon. The future of gaming was now -- er... then.

So, what happened?

or does reading this article make you feel sorry for sega?
I wish they didn't have to go through all that, it was a good console!

Bladeslayer6460d ago

that thinks this article makes me feel sorry for sega also so much potential it even had a near perfect version of streetfighter 3rd strike on it i still wouldn't mind owning one again.

And all Sega fans who love Dreamcast. Honestly I spent most of greatest gaming moments with this console.
First Soul Calibur play, I laughed my ass with my friend calling Champion of Chaos(Warhammer) accidentally instead of Nightmare. We started to love the game and play everyday.
Shenmue, really awesome adventure game.
Skies of Arcadia and it's airborne combats.
Powerstone 2/LeMans24 4 player gaming fun.
Dead or Alive 2 battles with friends.
Grandia 2, Guilty Gear X, Ikaruga, Maken X, Metropolis Street Racer, Omikron, Phantasy Star Online, Rez, House of Dead 2, Virtua Tennis(4p), Zero Gunner 2.

Aw damn, that was a lot of fun.

Still have my DC and playing sometimes House of Dead 2 ;]

The Dreamcast was awesome. The only Sega console I wanted to own. Shenmue, Skies of Arcadia and Soul Calibur were amazing games.

UnSelf6460d ago

cosomotion6459d ago

i agree, makes me want to go find my dreamcast and play some Skies of Arcadia.

R.I.P. Dreamcast

I loved sega

now I love its killer:

Sony

Harry1906460d ago

Sega killed its own console through inept management.

White-Sharingan6460d ago (Edited 6460d ago )

true but you do have to admit

having the successor of a console that sold over 100 mil and being more powerful competing with it placed the nail on the coffin

Harry1906460d ago (Edited 6460d ago )

and as much as I don't want to say it, I do have to admit it:yes, the PS2 was also one of the factors in the Dreamcast's demise. The PS1's great form during it's later years did not help it either.

What I don't understand though, is the way certain individuals used the PS2 or I would rather say the Playstation brand in general as a scapegoat. They poured their hate on it for no real reason afterwards.

White-Sharingan6460d ago

Yeah your right; not sure why hate PS2 :\

I know DC didnt have a very good game library; controls; etc

so it was sega's fault from the beginning and underestimating its competitors

----
and wtf @ the disagrees; care to come out and explain why some are disagreeing?

RumJunkie6459d ago

I think people are disagreeing with you because you said it had a poor game library. It's pretty much universally recognised that Dreamcast had one of the best line-up of AAA titles of any console, amazing considering the scant time it had to produce them.
