Developers really shell out for our entertainment, but who has shelled the most?

This list is largely false, Destiny did not cost 500 million to make. The 500 million budget is for the franchise over 10 years. The article even states this for MW 2 , "Arguably one of the greatest CoD games ever developed, MW2 wasn’t shy to dish out $266m on its marketing campaign", the marketing campaign is not the development budget. I highly doubt MW2 development budget was anywhere near it's marketing budget.

There are several games that have development budget estimates of close to or over 100 million, such as GTA IV, Red Dead Redemption, Max Payne 3, Tomb Raider (2013), Halo 4 and Deadpool. Bioshock Infinite was also rumored to be over `100 million, this was denied by Ken Levine, but later events support that the high budget may have been true.

You combine development and marketing costs together to get how much a game costs for overall development. Marketing is just as important to make the game sell.

Other than that, Destiny did not cost that much to develop. Ever since Wikipedia added it to the top of their list, all these sites have been pushing that information.

KwietStorm_BLM3517d ago

Nobody is arguing the importance of marketing in order to *sell* a game, but there is a reason why marketing has it's own budget; Marketing is not development. The marketing budget may even be directly influenced/affected by the development if the game ends up costing more to make than initially thought, but that doesn't mean it's together with the development budget.

sullynathan3517d ago

both parts are still added together to give the overall development.

freshslicepizza3517d ago

Marketing is still associated with the overall costs. This is why the overall revenue in return also had to consider this.

Is it though Minecraft literally had little to no marketing when it came out and despite eventually getting it, the popularity was their already. Personally I think games like MW2 and GTAV could get away with much smaller marketing budgets

Kingdomcome2473517d ago

I highly doubt that Deadpool cost anywhere near that amount to develop.

sullynathan3517d ago

@Lawson Activision pushed the marketing back then for MW2 because that was the series height at the point, now though, Black Ops passed it in sales. R* generally spends as much money as they want and it pays off because they made the 4th best selling game of all time. I don't know if they can do this again.
Minecraft is a special case.

The sad thing is that publishers are willing to spend more on marketing than actually let a team work on a game. It's all about hype, marketing, and unrealistic deadlines, that's why games are either delayed or get pushed back all the time now. They've got a bunch of suits breathing down their necks.

Edit:

Plus, if I'm not mistaken, they've spent 250 million on the first game, let alone the 3 They're aiming at. Unless they really plan on milking you dry I'm pretty sure They're already making profits though. They've still got a huge player base that's all in.

I loved this game from the beta, soaked it in and got my base game experience. Once they locked basic features on the base game away behind a paywall I was done.

I'll get the full set dirt cheap after they announce number 2 by E3, I'm not preordering that one though, because they've already shown how activision needs that marketing money back and it's through us.

Hopefully they tell some more of the the cool ass story with the next one and don't rely so heavily on the grimoire. This game has solid mechanics and great lore, I put it more on the publishers being too damn strong handed with a bank than anything. They're good developers and I think they just didn't have enough say in it

The AAA game industry has been pushing itself towards bigger budgets and narrower profit margins per unit sold for years. Devs that used to focus on one platform, now have to develop for two sub platforms due to the Scorpio and Pro.

Games sometimes are launched in state of disrepair ,which generates money earlier but likely drops overall sales. Budgets are so big that microtransactions and DLC generate more profit than the actual game sales.

fenome3517d ago

We're getting into deviating fractions and deminishing returns though, word of mouth is the best and worst marketing. Just let the game speak for itself, stop trying to tell us about it. Speaking of which, where the hell did game demo's go? Or is that what people call 'Betas' now?

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing12d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9212d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit12d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing12d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9212d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
