PS4 Pro Impressions

"On the 7th of September at the annual Sony PlayStation event, a new console was announced. Called the PlayStation Pro (codename Neo), it’s been cited as the high-end upgrade for console gamers and the PlayStation 4 in general. Set to release on the 10th of November in 2016, with an asking price of €399/£349, this new console brings a variety of features to the table. The PS4 Pro is larger than the original PS4, which gives the Pro a lot more space to house muscle for high quality textures, visuals and gameplay at a constant 60 FPS (frames per second)."

I don't see lack of uhd drive as an issue. Uhd drives are 300 euro, how many people actually have these?? Pro will still play your dvds and blu rays.

Krangs_Uncle3533d ago

Forgetting the fact that 99% of UHD films out are literally upscaled at the moment - a handful of movies are actually shot in 4k (The Martian etc) The same people moaning about PS4 Pro not having UHD drives, are the same people moaning about not wanting to spunk money on a 4K TV.

ninsigma3533d ago

Yeah exactly! I've seen users here shout victory when uhd was announced for slim but when every playstation became uhd capable it changed it "well you need a 4k tv". Same crap with the uhd player. Can't keep their stories straight lol.

On a side note, I'd say the Martian looks fantastic in 4k!

Neonridr3533d ago

upscaled now.. but how about in say a years time?

I am getting a 4K TV this holiday season (black friday / boxing day) and it would have been nice to not have to shell out for a separate player. I would rather play native content than to stream it at a less than ideal bitrate for 4K.

xetiro3533d ago

@Neonridr
So you're telling me that people that have money to not only buy an expensive 4K HDR TV but also willing to buy expensive UHD Blu-ray movies are then dependent of a cheap gaming console featuring an UHD player that in turn will make this gaming console more expensive for everyone?

Man, if I had that luxury I already had bought a good UHD player anyway.

Wallstreet373533d ago (Edited 3533d ago )

If this was Nintendo with its bs anti consumer, weak hardware, same sequels every system Neonrider....
Would commend them.

His biases and agendas are very conspicuous!!!

Hey Neon why u didn't chew out Nintendo when they had region lock, hardly any new ips, no memory in their console, weak hardware, mediocre online, no voice chat, etc...

Hypocrite I swear man

conanlifts3533d ago

I moaned about the lack of uhd drive and i own a 4k hdr tv. In the end all it means for me though as that i will delay my purchase of a ps4 pro until horizon zero dawn is released. A uhd drive would have meant a day 1 purchase though as i can't stream 4k due crappy internet so need the drive to watch 4k movies.

jwillj2k43533d ago

It's HDR that makes uhd so special. It's literally a night and day difference. Bluray can't compare when HDR is in the mix.

starchild3532d ago (Edited 3532d ago )

I recently got a 4k HDTV with HDR support and I was counting on the PS4 Pro being my first UHD Blu-Ray player. The quality of UHD movies will improve in time, just as standard Blu-rays did. HDR is a game-changer for both movies and games. It's just disappointing I'll have to buy a separate UHD player for my movies.

@xetiro

Strange argument there. The fact that a person cares about fidelity and has bought themselves a 4k tv and is ready to buy a few favorite movies on UHD Blu-ray doesn't mean they are willing to spend their money carelessly or that money suddenly isn't important anymore. 4k televisions aren't that expensive anyway. Even a very well performing option like Vizio's 2016 P series, which supports HDR, isn't that expensive (at only $1000 for the 50" model).

The PS3 was my first Blu-ray player and Sony supported it and upgraded it wonderfully over the course of several years. It was a fine Blu-ray player. A console can do a very good job as a movie playback device because they have plenty of hardware power for decoding and processing video and audio.

Most people thought it was a given that the PS4 Neo/Pro would have UHD Blu-ray capability. Unfortunately, it looks like I'm going to have to spend $300 on a standalone UHD Blu-ray player, in addition to the $400 I spend on the PS4 Pro, instead of getting it all in one device. And this also means more clutter in my entertainment center.

wsoutlaw873532d ago

I have had a 4k tv for almost a year, and have never even thought about buying a 30$ 4k blu ray, let alone a uhd blu ray player. Movies are usually filmed in 1080, the tv upscales obviously, an streeming for 5$ or what ever is just better. Almost no one buys blu rays anymore yet everyone is complaining about this.

"I don't see lack of uhd drive as an issue. Uhd drives are 300 euro, how many people actually have these?? Pro will still play your dvds and blu rays."

when the ps3 came out how many had blurays and how much did standalone players cost at the time?

ssj273533d ago

Ps3 sales suck at the beginning. Came late higher price and multiplatform look and played better on the 360 even when the ps3 was more powerful. The bluray players cost equally to the ps3 if I'm not mistaken it was more convenient getting a ps3 over a blurayplayer.

Scorpio looks like is in the same position but it will cost way more than ultra bluray players. Sure I as a gamer will get a xbox over a bluray player even if now they are smart player's but i as a movie lover will not get a bluray player i don't care about bluray movies. I only owned like 4 last gen and they cane free with ps3 and the tv i buy. I most likely wont get movies this gen anyways so I dont care. It's a waste of money. I got bunch of dvds on the garage collecting dust. Which is why services like netflix are so popular and convenient or movie piracy is all I need

ninsigma3533d ago

The were sky high and so was the cost of the ps3 because of it.
But at least blu ray had benefits for games. Uhd discs won't be used for games so NOT including one to keep the cost down was the best decision.

DarXyde3532d ago

If I were a movie collection buff, I might be a bit bothered. I guess it doesn't bother me because I don't like watching movies on my consoles (Netflix and Hulu withstanding). The only "movie" I watched on a console was the bonus disc that came with The Phantom Pain. Never even watched the Spider-Man 3 blu-ray that came with my first PS3 (mostly because I just hated that movie).

Not really sure what to say about it, honestly. It's negligible for me, but there are probably a ton of other people who are disappointed.

On the bright side, those people now have every reason to own both a PlayStation and an Xbox.

ninsigma3532d ago

Yeah like I know there are people who would be legit disappointed but tbh I think anyone who is a movie buff that was interested in 4k would most likely have a player by now. I'm quite certain the people that this iactually impacts is relatively very small.

WeAreLegion3533d ago

Annual? They don't do this every year.

S2Killinit3533d ago

Im just looking forward to that power boost. Horizon with Pro enabled will be sweet. That lush environment agrees with my eyes.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA3532d ago

lmao @ the ps4 slim picture with this title.... looks like gamertime.co.uk cant tell the difference

Gavin_GTUK3532d ago

Well spotted. I've gone and, er, amended it. On our site, anyway. I've messaged Neodyminium but I think the image is stuck now it's approved. Woops, my mistake.

MasterCornholio3532d ago (Edited 3532d ago )

I created a report so hopefully that allows NEO to make the change.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA3532d ago

Haha all good :) mistakes happen i was more taking the piss in a joking way :P

MasterCornholio3532d ago

Thank you for pointing that out.

Hopefully it gets corrected.

-Foxtrot21d ago

Funny considering Bruce left half way through development and now we get told there was an internal conflict with the story direction.

Makes you think…

HectixRose22d ago

I think it was good decision, if he was still alive, he would have been a mascot just like Kratos, drake and many others. These old dudes gotta die for new characters to take center stage with their own storyline. They keep dragging the emotional baggage into many sequels and eventually the story just turns into absolute shit show.

JEECE22d ago

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

CantThinkOfAUsername21d ago

I thought the more common complaint about Uncharted franchise was how the main cast are the good guys acting so nonchalantly while killing hundreds in cold blood (aka the dissonance between gameplay and story cutscenes). They just did it again in Part II.

Soy22d ago

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

DarXyde21d ago

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

Ashunderfire8621d ago

Sorry just had to say this lol! RICKYYYY!

Man Cuba Gooding Jr was miscast in that movie, but that part was cringey it was sad and funny at the same time man.

Ashunderfire8621d ago (Edited 21d ago )

I understand but the way they went about killing Joel, was poorly executed. Even the show of the Last of Us games tried to improved it, but it was just as bad. Well at least Joel got to know the reason why he had to die, before the death happened in the show. That part gave us the full context, but the game just let it happen with no pay off.

Joel death should have been a midway thing through the story, so we at least get to play him a little more with Ellie. Abby didn’t need to be this Hulk looking woman, but more like the show Abby which is a beater idea in my opinion.

The only ND game that was so disappointing to me I couldn't finish it.

pwnmaster300022d ago

Honestly as much as I loved the game, they could have just not killed him off.
I get it creator vision and all but killing a character that made you millions is just wrong imo. At least have him go down fighting.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle21d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
