Console Gaming Was Never About a Premium Experience

The PS4 Pro and the Xbox Scorpio will, at the time of their release, be the most powerful gaming consoles ever made for no other reason than to be the most powerful gaming consoles ever made. Given that technological innovation is not contingent upon the gaming industry, these high-performance consoles will quickly become obsolete, defeating the purpose of their existence. PC gaming will always be several steps ahead, and when corporations are now trying to sell us on that technological performance, they will end up in an escalating trap—because what happens when the Pro and Scorpio are obsolete in three to four years? Do we need a Scorpio 2? A Pro Plus? No. What we need is to be content with consoles for what they are, what they always have been—which has never been to deliver a technologically premium experience; they’ve been about great games and nothing, nothing else.

Well it is now thanks to Xbox announcing the Scorpio

ThatOneRiggaNob3538d ago

LOL you act as if Sony wasn't working on the pro long before MS announced Scorpio at E3. Both companies have been planning this for some time so you can't just single out one of them and say they started this trend.

3538d ago
nix3537d ago

it's called Project Scorpio. knowing MS trying to unite Win10 and Xbox it could very well be midsize PConsole running skeleton Win10 OS.

TheCommentator3537d ago

Yeah, but the Pro is only a better experience, not a Premium one. That's why Scorpio is targeting native 4k and coming out next year, doing VR with headsets that also work on PC, playing 360 games, allowing mods, etc. They'll even have great 4k movie options that don't require being forced to hook up to the internet. Premium means all the bells and whistles, and PS4P doesn't have nearly all of what Scorpio will for gaming.

Nix, I hope you're right because a partnership with Steam for access to a great PC gaming library, and full use of desktop apps like Word, Photoshop, or Pro Tools would mean most people wouldn't need a computer at all anymore.

DigitalRaptor3537d ago (Edited 3537d ago )

@ TheCommentator

PS4 Pro is more expensive than the PS4 slim, with lots of additional power and enhancements for games, thus it's a premium model. I don't think you should be this eager to change the definition of what "premium" is, especially when most of what you mentioned about Scorpio is also available on the non-premium, Xbox One S.

PCVR game support already SEEMS like it's falling behind with amateurish game products whilst Sony is releasing the polished professional end-products on its PSVR in just a month, and support is already better at the same point in time. You have no idea what you're getting with Oculus Rift on Scorpio (and Vive specs are too high for what it can realistically provide), just like when you really break it down, you don't really know all that much Scorpio other than a teraflop promise either.

It's interesting that you use the word "targeting" for Scorpio, which is basically all it is right now. A purposeful non-reveal of partial specs and marketing doublespeak to confuse less tech-literate folks about what Scorpio MIGHT be able to do over the competition's product that will be out in November and a full 12 months before their product comes out.

And the reality of the situation is that PS4P, just like its younger brother the PS4S and it's even younger brother the vanilla PS4, will still have a greater lineup of higher rated, more diverse GAMES to offer its gamers than the things you list that somehow trump it because of something you consider to stand alone as the "premium" exception.

Sony admitted they were planning the PS4 Pro as soon as the original PS4 shipped back in 2013...

Both decided on a premium model. Sony said themselves they were thinking about it right after the ps4 launch. Not fair to just single one of them out.

Edit: fixed auto correct

NapalmSanctuary3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

We will see if whether or not the market accepts this kind of business model for consoles.

Right cuz Xbox announced the Scorpio it must be them that has caused all this... Oh wait... Ps4 pro is coming out right now! I guess we know which company had it all planned out the first.

The issue is and has always been this ridiculous desire to have your console of choice be the most powerful... Believe me the industry heard loud and clear that performance and resolution was most important when this gen started.

It's gamers fault this is happening. Gamers and their silly fanboy wars.

freshslicepizza3537d ago (Edited 3537d ago )

scorpio comes out late next year and you want to ignore ps4 pro which is coming out in november? typical.

what's funny is some still act like either one of these systems are required. you can buy a ps4 slim or xbox one s and ignore the premium experiences.

Artemidorus3537d ago

Another hypetrain ready to derail at 2017.

gangsta_red3537d ago

"Well it is now thanks to Xbox announcing the Scorpio"

wut?

lvl_headed_gmr3537d ago

The media is trying to change the narrative now.

Last 3 years it was all about THE POWER and the resolution behind it....

Remember the whole PS4 is 50% more powerful BS?

What was once about the games became all about the resolution. Now that MS has announced a true gaming beast of a console that obliterates the PS4 "Pro", the media want to go back 4 years and make it all about the games and not power.

Well F.U. media. Nobody but the Sony camp is paying attention to your bias views and changing of the narrative.

#SaveSony seeing as they desperately need it. Sony gambled on VR and the trend is showing nobody cares with a 0.1% of users on Steam using VR.

Now Sony is developing games that won't release till 2018 and to help with the bad VR decision...they are now cutting jobs.

This gen has been nothing but shameful from the media and Sony camp for pushing a power narrative and not a game narrative....I guess when you've been getting trash exclusives you gotta boast about something...

Markets are ever changing. Who would have thought that a £110 controller would sell out on launch?

If you told me 5 years ago that Apple would one day sell their base model phones for £600 and completely sell out during launch, I would have called you crazy.

sprinterboy3538d ago

Agreed then moan about vita memory card prices

Death3538d ago

Vita memory cards aren't a premium product, they are simply way over priced.

Phill-Spencer3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

@Death

And iphones aren't overpriced smartphones, right? /s

Edit:

The term Premium is just a marketing thing. It doesn't necessarily mean the device is better as other devices in any way. In the case of an iPhone some would say it's overpriced some would say it's a premium device and therefore it is expansive.

Tobsesan3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

Apple Releases premium products. You could buy a cheaper Samsung platic Phone that explodes or buy the more expensive product made of better Material.

Btw Apple products really dont lose value that much compared to theire competition. If you buy a iMac now, you could sell it in a few years and still get alot out of it.

If people can afford it, they will always buy the product they feel better using.

Phill-Spencer3537d ago

Yes because it is standard for Samsung devices to explode, wtf? I'm using my Galaxy s3 since 2013 on a daily Basis and guess what, it didn't explode. And it is still advancing because of Firmware updates.(I have Android 6.01). As long as it works so flawlessly and if i don't brick it one day, i'm not planning to get a New phone anytime soon.

Artemidorus3537d ago

That's millennials for you, clueless and brainless mixed with a throw away culture.

ShaunCameron3537d ago

There are plenty of older people who buy Apple's products.

Phill-Spencer3537d ago (Edited 3537d ago )

@shauncameron

Those mainly may be the ones who want to be young and cool when they behave like fools.

Ristul3538d ago

As long as it's forward and backwards compatible I don't see a big issue with it, I think I can get used to this new model.

SegaGamer3537d ago

Yep, that was basically my deal breaker. If they added forward and backwards compatibility, i am was all for it, if they didn't, then i was totally against it.

madmonkey013538d ago

ps4 pro is same price as ps4 was at launch in the UK,

Hoffmann3538d ago

Yeah same price as here in Germany at launch as well.

Phill-Spencer3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

I just hope there will be no supply shortages when it launches.

Hätte keinen Bock darauf länger als bis zum 10.11 zu warten. ;-) (i wouldn't want to wait any longer than November 10th)

Fishy Fingers3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

Did you expect it to be be more expensive?

Only the GPU has changed, off set against tech advances Sony probably manufacture at a similar cost to the launch system.

Edit:
Out of interest...
PS4 GPU based on 7850 - retail £240
PS4P GPU based on RX470 - retail £170

TheCommentator3537d ago (Edited 3537d ago )

It uses the "tiger" versions of the jaguar line of cores, and a GPU based off of the 7850 with some minor elements of Polaris. If they strayed too far from the OG PS4 then they couldn't ensure FC in the Pro, so they were forced to continue to use the old GCN 1.1 architecture specifically (that's why there's no UHD Blu Ray support in it, there's no H.265 encode).

Scorpio will be customized off of Polaris or possibly even Vega, because the architecture inside the XB1 was highly modified, essentially prototyping many features of GPUs released for PC after 2013. There aren't even any GPUs out yet that have full hardware support of FL 12.0 and FL12.1 like the XB1 does. MS built the XB1 with FC in mind, and XB1 will more easily support next gen engines when engines utilize the FL hardware features like Ray Tracing, Voxelization, Raster Ordered Views, SM 6.0, etc. That's probably why there was a big banner hanging outside the XB1 reveal that said, "Beta Tested in the Future". With Win10, DX12, and Scorpio, XB1 will finally see the types of next gen engines that make use of all the OG console has to offer.

game4funz3537d ago

Yea.... Makes you wonder if it's not a new gen console then why is it priced as a next gen console?

Forgive me I forgot to use the marketing speel.... It's priced as a premium product. My bad.

zodiac9093538d ago

Everyone following the business model that cell phones have laid out sadly

Fishy Fingers3538d ago (Edited 3538d ago )

Yup more or less. Tech advances are also moving quicker than ever so the days off a £300 console lasting 8+ years is long gone. They're showing their age within 2-3 years.

Still, I struggle to get my head around upgrading to a completely 'new' system just for a new GPU. At least with the PC you can select when and which components as needed.

uth113538d ago

Tech advances are actually moving slower these days. Moore's Law no longer holds up as well as it used to.

They just want to sell us smaller upgrades more frequently now

Fishy Fingers3538d ago

True, CPU advances have slowed, mainly due to the fact they don't need to, but things like GPU, floating point, memory performance etc etc continue to scale, just compare the performance figures for AMD/Nvidia GPU performance for the last few generations.

Moores law refers simply to the number of transistors in a chip/circuit board, there are other ways to improve performance.

kneon3538d ago

@Fishy Fingers

What's even more important is how fast performance/$ is advancing. That allows them to update the consoles every 2-4 years yet keep the price pretty much the same.

And the cost of designing these updated consoles is drastically lower than in the past due the using PC based components. AMD is doing most of the necessary R&D anyway, they just need to design a custom variant of their APU for each console.

Steveoreno13537d ago

This does not change the base ps4 in any way. I'm so glad Sony is giving me a "choice" to upgrade my ps4 mid gen. Why should the people who have a good job or know how to save $30 a week for 9 weeks not have a "choice".

ShaunCameron3537d ago (Edited 3537d ago )

It's not necessarily about having a good-paying job. It's about knowing how to manage what you have.

Steveoreno13537d ago

Exactly Shaun. It's very easy to sell your old system and save up.

Sony Looking To Sell A Lot Of PS4 Pro's Come Christmas Says Jim Ryan

In a recent interview with GamesIndustry.biz , Sony's Jim Ryan talked a bit about the PS4 Pro and how they had underestimated its demand.

According to Pachter, the PS4 Pro sales aren't doing very good. Maybe drop the price $50 and bundle in a game since Xbox One X is coming?

thatguyhayat3257d ago

Patcher baffles himself sometimes. Ps4 pro is doing really well

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen3257d ago

Agreed. If 1 in 4 PS4's being sold is a Pro anything Pachter says about PS4 Pro sales numbers should be completely ignored.

bigmalky3257d ago

You can buy a PS4 Pro, with Horizon and Wipeout for £350 in the UK at the minute. Basically, you're getting the console for £280... I'd say that's a bargain. Why do people keep asking for another £50/$50 off when plenty of places do bundle deals with great prices?

Ju3257d ago

I have the feeling there is a price cut coming for the holidays.

LamerTamer3257d ago

They will have a hard time with X1X out.

bigmalky3257d ago

No they won't. Most parents will probably go for the cheaper option for Christmas presents. Most gamers that were waiting for a price for XoX, unless they're die hard Microsoft fans or spec junkies, will see that Sony have a cheaper option with huge exclusives coming in the new year, along with third party titles that will probably look little different to their XoX counterparts.

It's amazing how biased opinions seem to speak for the entire gaming population, instead of looking at people as beings that can, and will, use logic.

Petebloodyonion3257d ago

Most parents will go for the basic version of Ps4 or Xbox1 instead of a pro or X1X.
Most parents will ask if it's play COD, FIFA or GTA since theses are the biggest sellers on both platforms.
Most parents don't have freaking clues about the exclusives coming on Xbox or PS4 just like you probably don't have a clue about exclusive deals coming on Apple music.

It's amazing how N4G hardcore gamers seem to speak for the entire gaming population, instead of looking at people as beings that can, and will, follow the herd of COD/ GTA/ FiFA.

bigmalky3257d ago (Edited 3257d ago )

@Petebloodyonion

If you read my post properly, you'll see that I said parents will go for the cheaper console. I never even mentioned whether that's the upgraded models or not.

As for the games, it was in regard to gamers wanting a console, not the parents. Totally different sentence and subject.

It's amazing how people would actually look less like idiots if they actually read an entire post, before jumping on someone's comments.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen3257d ago

If Sony drops the price of the Pro and it's $150 cheaper than the $500, checkerboarding beast, the only thing Sony will have a hard time doing is shipping Pro's to retailers.

bigmalky3257d ago

They don't need to drop the price. You can buy a Pro with one or two games in a package for £100 cheaper than an XoX with nothing on it's release.

LIGATURE3257d ago

I love ps4 but if the x gives all the multiplat games at least 1080/60 and update past multiplat games then id go for the x.but id get a switch before ither😂
