Understanding Sony's Issue with Delays

With delays becoming so common on Sony's console, the question needs to be asked: why do Sony’s games (as great as they may be) keep getting delayed?

I rarely feel upset when I see a delay because I assume it will be a better experience in the end. But I do get more hyped when the "Bethesda tactic" is being used...makes me feel like a kid on Christmas morning when I know it's just around the corner.

Player3Podcast3534d ago

Yeah. I tend to try to just tune out coverage when it is too far out from release. I have the tendency to get exhausted with demo after demo after trailer after trailer.

freshslicepizza3534d ago (Edited 3534d ago )

i wish more studios would take the bethesda approach and announcing games the same year they are coming out. problem is not so many studios are fortunate enough to have a namebrand like fallout that will sell regardless of hyping them for years.

as for sony i feel some of those games are purposely delayed because at the end of the day what difference does it make? they are the leader this generation in sales and can also use third party games to carry them through unlike nintendo who relies solely on their own games otherwise they won't sell systems. which mneans there is not that much pressure for sony to place games around slower release schedules.

this problem is also not just restricted to sony even though sony seems to take the lead on delays. games cost so much that they think they need to show them way too early.

Donthate @ you can call playstation all you want but it has more games both AAA and indies. Quality is subjective but since you guys are more bothered about meta scores, playstation still wins there too. Better multiplats too and those things aren't just some crazy dreams but hard facts.

Maybe they delay more because they have more games?

_-EDMIX-_3534d ago

"as for sony i feel some of those games are purposely delayed" LMFAO!

As suppose to on accident or?

" they are the leader this generation in sales "

They have a reputation to uphold. GT5, Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword, Killzone 2,

" through unlike nintendo who relies solely on their own" .....they have delayed many, many games though, I mean...Nintendo is literally known for delaying games to perfect them bud. Sorry but I don't really think you know what your talking about (like always) and your ignoring that when PS3 WASN'T market leader, it delayed many games. So why did they delay games last gen?

MS delayed Gears 2 and Gears 3, Too Human some Forza games, Crackdown 3, Scalebound, delayed ReCore.. are they market leader right now? orrrrr is there another reason their games are delayed?

"which mneans there is not that much pressure for sony to place games around slower release schedules."

Soooo lets replace "Sony" with Nintendo or MS and see if this makes any damn sense.

No pressure to release Zelda U huh? lol

No pressure to release Crackdown 3 huh? even with 20 plus million behind PS4? Maybe, JUST maybe, they are delaying games to FIX THEM. Has nothing to do with um "no pressure" as that would mean Nintendo and MS would NOT be delaying games, but shotgunning them out regardless of quality.

You do not see Nintendo or MS doing that or really many publishers theses days, so not sure why you assumed Sony was doing this merely based on being market leader.

Why did EA delay BF Hardlines, Mirror's Edge 2, Mass Effect 4 etc? I mean...buddy, that excuse sorta doesn't make sense.

So did you forget MS is losing by millions of units world wide, yet Scalebound was revealed in 2014, yet is coming out in 2017? lol

freshslicepizza3534d ago (Edited 3534d ago )

@_-EDMIX-_

year after year sony decides to delay key games during the busy holiday season, that is not by coincidence. they do it because they are the lead platform which will take the bulk of software sales. this allows them more flexibility to have their own games come out at slower times. the ps3 got a pass since it was much more difficult to work on.

here, i will leave you with this as i find it rather amusing now,

http://www.gamespot.com/art...

"We don't want to take too long on Gran Turismo 7," Kazunori told Top Gear. "Best-case scenario? Next year. In GT6 we really had to tune the software 100 percent to maximize the PS3's architecture, but of course the PS4's hardware is much better, so I think the overall quality of the game across the board will be boosted when you come to play it."

that was from 2013!

so let's wait and see if horizon gets delayed again or not. i already predicted last year it would not come out this year, go and search my past comments. this is a pattern by sony.

_-EDMIX-_3534d ago

@mold- thats nice....QB, Scalebound, ReCore, Crackdown 3 delayed....

Kryptix3534d ago (Edited 3534d ago )

@_-EDMIX-_

It's not just a delay in games. There's also a delay in controller input, too.

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

lol No, all jokes aside. Below also got delayed. And Phantom Dust. (it got revived for 2017, announced in 2014)

So about delays? I don't mind them as long as there's games to play in between. I rather have a game that's not broken at launch, messy, all sorts of server issues, incomplete side stuff, etc compared to something that has all that. Plus, having to patch the game over time with gigs of data for not just that, but obvious balancing issues isn't my cup of tea. Like you took your time to beast with a gun or character and it turned out that it had bugs attached to it or they didn't test that right so they nerf it into oblivion, wasting my time mastering it and getting used to the weaknesses. You get me.

And wouldn't a delayed game also provide a little bit more content and not just fine tuning? That's if, there was no development hell associated to the delay, of course.

ninjazfistz3534d ago

Agree. Frustration usually mounts after several years or even a year of delays.

Shubhendu_Singh3534d ago

TLG is such an embarrassing case.

well, IF the delay was tactical to avoid larger games then maybe it is ok.

But IF the delay was to iron out bugs and stuff, (it's a great gesture ultimately) but seriously how much freakin time do you need for TLG? Wasn't 7 YEARS enough ?

I know delay game is always good than a non-delayed game, obviously. But you can't help but think something is really wrong with Sony when every game keeps getting delayed and delayed. Either stop announcing the release date, that could be a solution until it is 2-3 months away.

jb2273534d ago (Edited 3534d ago )

"But you can't help but think something is really wrong with Sony when every game keeps getting delayed and delayed. Either stop announcing the release date, that could be a solution until it is 2-3 months away."

And therein lies the rub. The gaming community gets upset over delays, so when Sony tries to fix that by not putting solid release dates on games revealed at E3 this year, the gaming community gets worked up about these games being "so far out they don't even have a release date".

Seems to me like Sony has already worked towards fixing this, but a vocal minority has chosen to criticize them for it instead of seeing the simple logic in it. Most people think the new announcements for games like Spider-Man, GoW & Days Gone puts them in the 2018 & Beyond window, but I wouldn't be surprised if Sony puts some firm Holiday dates on these games come E3 2017.

As for TLG this one is a bit of a special case. This game has seen 10 years of development over two console generations, following on as a spiritual successor from huge critical successes from the PS2 era whose sentiments have only gained more favor...to botch a launch like this solely to be a slave to a date now would just be insanity. TLG needs to run as smooth as silk come launch, otherwise we will see what we're seeing w/ Recore today, a game that seems like great fun is instead the poster boy for how to not make a first impression. In this day & age you absolutely have to nail the landing straight out of the gate or your game that you've put years of man hours & so many resources into will be forgotten in a week's time.

_-EDMIX-_3534d ago

So it would have been better to just can the game? You know what happens when game go in to development this long? They don't come out bud....

Yet your a crying that they are doing you this solid and releasing what they promised?

Where is that Halo MMO? Buddy, it didn't even last HALF the time in development as this game and was canned, yet your crying over how long its taking? Be happy that its ANYTHING at this point, they NEVER needed to stick with this game bud, they very well could have canned it and I wouldn't have even blamed them if they did, but to cry over how long its taking is just immature and childish.

Sorry but if this was any other publisher, it legit may not even be coming out at all.

Sony has canned lots of games too, to stick with this game is a very respectable gesture.

"can't help but think something is really wrong with Sony when every game keeps getting delayed and delayed"

Buddy, I can't help but to think something is wrong with publishers that keep rushing out broken games, yet your crying over a company ensuring quality at launch?

Sparta073534d ago

What about Microsoft?
Wasn't QB, scalebound, and recore delayed just to name a few. It happens and sometimes is a good thing.

Ethereal3534d ago

Exactly. Announce when you know you can meet the ship date no more than 6 months in advance. I get that you want people to know what is coming but these early announcements just end up hurting the game more in the long run.

jznrpg3534d ago

You can not anticipate all problems with development, we do not live in a perfect world with perfect humans, mistakes and issues will happen. As long as the game is good when it is released is all I care about. I always have games on PlayStation to play, always have a backlog , so delays really don't matter to me.I still have a backlog on PS3, though I am happy to say it is getting small.

jznrpg3534d ago (Edited 3534d ago )

I like it as well, but Bethesda games have a lot of bugs when they come out. Morrowind is one of my favorite games of all time, but Bethesda could or maybe should delay there games a little to fix the bucket of bugs you always get.

Dabigsiebowski3534d ago

Well Rockstar Games are the ones who started "that" tactic. Bethesda makes over rated games anyways that are super buggy from the get go.

You do know Bethesda is just as bad as scum as the EA, Ubi, or Acti. They tried to hold payments on the original devs of Prey 2 so they can lower the value of the company as a whole and buy them out at a cheap price. The completely screwed over playstation users on skyrim. The whole mod debacle is truly them being stubborn about wanting control over platforms for user created content. People would think to point the finger at Sony but can you really blame them? Fallout 4 was truly mediocre despite fanboys not accepting this.

They bought of id software and pretty much forced Carmack out because he didn't want to play ball with a publisher he had no choice over since they were the ones paying for the lights now. DOOM was no where near the quality I expected for the franchise let alone it being a reboot. They took it in a direction that was just mindless instead of trying to push the genre forward as the other ones did. doesn't surprise me to see it as cheap as it is now.

And here we have Skyrim.... the most overrated game in recent history. IT IS NOT A BAD GAME AT ALL, just severely overrated and frankly the Witcher series have proved that. The game was pretty buggy and really lacked the kinda balance you would expect from a game after 40 hours. Good game but really is over rated to a degree.

_-EDMIX-_3534d ago

lol! Me too, but not every title can get such a treatment. All games are developed differently and many companies market differently. This is a huge IP for Sony and clearly they are likely not going to move something like 12 million units in a week or anything. With a new IP, they need more time to market and develop. This game is way, way past being released shortly after reveal. They should take their time. Can't undo what has been done so...

UCForce3534d ago (Edited 3534d ago )

Well, one thing I learned that Sony need to be more precise with release date. Also, TLG delay is smart move for Sony. Because October has two major titles, TLG won't stand a chance against those two. The game is coming in December, not November.

Player3Podcast3534d ago

They also need to play their reveals a little closer to the chest. Lower that gestation period from reveal to release.

donthate3534d ago

Except in December all the gifts and games have been bought. No more money. There is a reason why everyone tries to get in October.

Sparta073534d ago

@ don, Right cause nobody shops in the month of December. Lol that's one of the busiest time of the year for shoppers. People usually start there shopping on black Friday ( end of Nov )
And continues to Dec.

Gamist2dot03534d ago

Maybe in the old days when games take shorter amount of time to make with minimum budget, but today's games are way more sophisticated and require bigger budget so it's not easy when everything seems to fall into place for the target date when suddenly a serious bug or budget issue gets in the way come close to launch date.

I, too, don't like delays, but when it happens, i support every developer that does it because it's usually worth it.

2pacalypsenow3534d ago

Because they try to get as many bugs fixed before release, unlike other companies that release them first and fix them later.

akurtz3534d ago

Jared8Randall3534d ago

Sony's delays is a professional dichotomy. One the one hand, they want they're games to be good the first time (pro). On the other hand, they just can't get their estimates right on when it will be top notch (not as pro). I think it evens out in Sony's favor though, because we stop caring about the release date when we're finally playing the game and it rocks.

SpaceRanger3534d ago

"With delays becoming so common on Sony’s console"

I dislike delays just as much if not more than the next guy, but this is becoming more common in comparison to what? Because right now Sony seems to be the one doing it less in the industry. But that's just my take on it.

Either way I'm still glad this (TLG), Gravity Rush 2 and plenty more is coming out during the holidays.

AngelicIceDiamond3534d ago

"I dislike delays just as much if not more than the next guy, but this is becoming more common in comparison to what? Because right now Sony seems to be the one doing it less in the industry. "

Sony's doing it as much as the industry fixed it.

Sony's Bluepoint Closure Should Concern Every PS Studios Fan

Sammy: "Sony disastrously and disgracefully shuttered Texas-based fan favourite Bluepoint yesterday. The long-time PS Studios partner never got a chance to ship a game under its new parent company.

This news hit me particularly hard because I believe it reflects the erosion of once-great PlayStation management that I think we’ve all been feeling for quite some time."

CrashMania87d ago

How was this allowed to happen? A studio know for excellent remakes and remasters were put on a GOW live service game? Something nobody wanted? There are so many other, more interesting projects, for me they were the prime studio who should have remastered or remade Bloodborne, what an absolute waste, I'm really annoyed about this.

Hulst should have followed Jim Ryan out the door, especially after his failed concord brainchild, execs really do only fail upwards.

Extermin8or3_86d ago

You say "no body wanted" but we don't actually know if the Devs were the ones to pitch it. For all we know

Elda86d ago

If that was the case you would have thought Sony would have told Bluepoint no & had them make the God Of War trilogy remake instead while having Santa Monica Studios concentrate on the next God Of War & what ever else they're working on. A Bloodborne remake/remaster would have definitely printed Sony millions. It seems the upper management doesn't care what the fans think including them making awful business decisions. To take Bluepoint under their wing for 5 years & dismantle them is crazy work, Sony should have auctioned Bluepoint off to to a company that could really use them.

-Foxtrot86d ago

If the really did pitch it then they would have wanted their own IP for being a brand new game, not using someone else’s IP when it’s not a remake this time.

CrashMania86d ago

I mean I guess, but doubt that a small team of 70 wanted to do a live service game, I don't buy it personally, but we'll never 100% know.

Scissorman86d ago (Edited 86d ago )

i think you are half right. sony became hyper-focused on live service games and given that, studios would then pitch live service games because those projects were the most likely to be greenlit by the higher ups. now, as for what the hell bluepoint was working on since their god of war game was cancelled is beyond me. it's just increasingly frustrating when sony just announced a god of remake which is still in its infancy when bluepoint could have been working on it for years and likely would have shipped it by now.

MDTunkown86d ago

We had a god of war mp in the past and it didn’t do well back then with less competition so doubtful people wanted a live service game especially from devs that made some top tier remakes

Michiel198986d ago

Copium like this is the reason they're in this position. Sony could do no wrong and when something did go wrong, it's never the corporate suits at sony who are to blame.....its either: devs bad or ms/phil spencer bad while their own backyard is on fire. This is the result of not caring what your fav company does just because another company does (way) worse and automatically condoning everything. I hope they can turn it around without having to fuck over their customers more because especially some of the games on ps1 through ps3 were absolutely amazing.

Can't really say im surprised it's gotten to this point although I didn't expect them to close Bluepoint who has always delivered stellar work.

1nsomniac85d ago

The devs didn’t pitch it. It’s already been discussed publicly. They had literally just started on a new undisclosed project they were still in the initial ideas phase when they were asked to stop and do GoW instead.

Extermin8or3_75d ago

Love the downvotes considering it's since become public knowledge that yes bluepoint DID infact pitch the god of war game. They also eventually pitched a Bloodborne remake but from software torpedoed the project, sadly.

neutralgamer199286d ago (Edited 86d ago )

Everyone keeps asking for a Bloodborne remaster or remake — a game that genuinely deserves preservation and modernization. Instead, we got a remake of The Last of Us and then a remaster of The Last of Us Part II, both of which were already recent and widely available. That decision feels tone-deaf. It’s hard not to question priorities when so many legacy titles are untouched.

Bluepoint built its reputation on honoring PlayStation’s history. They were masters at remakes and remasters. There is an entire catalog — from PS1, PS2, and PS3 eras — that fans would celebrate. Yet instead of leveraging that strength, they were redirected toward live service ambitions. Six years later, there’s nothing to show, and now the studio is gone. That’s not just disappointing — it feels like wasted potential.

Sony Bend is another example. Days Gone 2 wasn’t greenlit, and the studio was reportedly shifted toward live service. Years later, that project was canceled, and they’re back at square one. That’s years of development time lost in a generation that already feels light on first-party output.

What’s even more concerning is the broader shift. PlayStation used to thrive on bold, risk-taking single-player projects and strong Japanese creative influence. Now the strategy appears more Western-focused and heavily driven by the live service model — where multiple failures are acceptable as long as one becomes a breakout success.

Competition used to push Sony to take creative risks. The PS3 vs. Xbox 360 era forced innovation. Today, Xbox has shifted direction, Nintendo operates independently in its own lane, and Sony doesn’t feel the same competitive pressure. Without that tension, the urgency to push boundaries seems diminished.

The frustration many fans feel isn’t just about one remake or one canceled project — it’s about a sense that PlayStation’s identity is drifting. And while loyalty is natural, defending every decision without criticism doesn’t help the platform grow.

It’s not anger because we hate PlayStation. It’s frustration because we care about what it used to represent

It does concern me that they think closing amazing studios like Bluepoint and Japan Studios is smart.

I'm honestly surprised Media Molecule is still around. They put out what 1 game in the past 10+ years? I personally wasn't interested in Dreams, so they have been a wash for me since the PS3 era. Are they working on a new game? What are they doing?

Stevonidas86d ago

I immediately recalled when they shut down Japan Studio. I don’t understand why any studio would agree to be acquired by Sony, EA, or Microsoft with their history of studio closures.

Reaper22_71d ago

Because of money. Most game studios need financial backing in order to develop games.

MM is most likely next to close down, and my guess it's sooner than later

FTLmaster86d ago

Frustrating news, for sure. Hulst is on a major losing streak. Baffling decisions....

Lightning7786d ago

They could of let them do a Remakes of Sly, Jak and Daxter maybe the old Killzone games. Ported Demon Souls to other platforms. Steady revenue for growth becoming a 70 team to 100+ eventually.

toxic-inferno86d ago

Precisely! PlayStation have a rich back catalogue that is screaming out for a talented team like those at Bluepoint to work their magic upon.

Such wasted potential. And a terrible thing to happen to those talented workers at Bluepoint.

Demon's Souls remake was the gateway to FromSoft games for me. I'd fully beaten Bloodborne, but had struggled to get into Dark Souls. Demon's Souls - as a launch title - showed me how these games are meant to be played.

Miacosa86d ago

As a PS Fan and someone that looks to new exsperiences not rehashing old ones I can feel for the devs but it does not move the needle as far as getting new video games.

Because they're bad at it and should stick to their strengths.

-Foxtrot201d ago

Also the market is super oversaturated these days. They’d have no chance unless it’s something that’s grown and nurtured over many years gaining a following, even then it wouldn’t be as big as COD, Fortnite and the like.

I still think if they refined the old school multiplayer “less is more” feeling that Uncharted 2s multiplayer had they could have done something with it these days but they made it too over the top and arcade like in U3 and U4 sadly.

Lightning77200d ago

They were doing it during the PS3 gen just fine though.

Christopher199d ago (Edited 199d ago )

No they weren't. CoD was steam rolling them back then and no one was competing with Halo. People just enjoyed the MP for a little while and moved on pretty quickly. None of them lasted like the competition. None of them.

blacktiger199d ago

Resistance and Killzone says hold my bullet

Christopher199d ago

Halo 2 - 8m+ sold
Halo 3 - 14m+ sold
Halo 4 - 10m sold
Killzone 2 - 2.6m sold
Resistance 2 - 3m sold

You can keep your bullets.

blacktiger199d ago

so now you are comparing lmao, and not to mention Halo is coming to PS5! lmao!!!!!!!

Travesty199d ago

Sale figures = great multiplayer experience
Got it..
Heard it first from here..

That’s the weakest argument. I played Halo and it was great obviously.
But so many different titles had really good online multiplayer.
Resistance Fall of Man. Was a solid title with fun multiplayer.
Killzone 2 was fun. Movement was slower but solid multiplayer.
Warhawk, probably my favorite. It was something different and had a very active community.

List goes on. But since sales = great multiplayer experiences than I don’t know what else to show you besides Call of Duty. 🤷🏼‍♂️

derek199d ago

@Christopher nonsense. Just because they weren't selling the most and/or had the most popular live service games doesn't mean they weren't making good games in the genre. Sony doesn't need to stick to any one type of genre, they have successful live service games in their portfolio. They need to get back to what worked during the ps3 gen so they stand out and stop chasing trends.

stupidusername199d ago

I'm happy we got Helldivers 2. But I believe Sonys biggest mistake was trying to force big single player studios to make multiplayer games based on big single player IPs. It just sounds like a bad idea from the get-go. Why did they need to force great studios like Insomniac, Guerilla, Bluepoint and Naughty Dog to make big live service multiplayer games?

Christopher198d ago (Edited 198d ago )

I think some people don't know what a multiplayer hit is. All of a sudden, number of people playing a game doesn't determine a hit? People need to be honest with reality here. If your competition is selling over 4x as many copies, you're not the hit game. And I didn't even include CoD in this.

MAG
KILLZONE
WARHAWK
SOCOM

all legendary series with very strong multiplayer

willo116199d ago

all great games. I feel the reason they keep failing is because they have abandoned pretty much most the franchises that made them who they are.

If they had made a new SOCOM, Killzone or MAG years ago they could have had a a strong set of multiplayer games but instead focused and making games like Concord that no one asked for a crowd that was never really there.

Yui_Suzumiya199d ago

MAG was pretty fun. Always wanted a sequel though.

They can.

But don't combine it with their strengths.

HD2 has identity. I don't think Concord had. And Marathon seemed lacking it, too.

Goodguy01201d ago (Edited 201d ago )

Dear god back when sony made highly underrated ones though. Socom, MAG, factions, uncharted 2 MP, resistance, warhawk, twisted metal, killzone 2+3....

I really wonder where they went wrong? The ps3 generation was amazing. It's just too bad cod and halo overtook the mp scene and these were all people played.

MIDGETonSTILTS17199d ago

Idk why MAG wasn’t bigger. And LoU mp was too good to not be expanded upon successfully. People STILL play it.

Kaizin514199d ago

Too early for its time. 256 players is cool and fun and has a lot of potential but it was hindered by the PS3 at the time, like many games were. Not saying it was bad, I enjoyed it quite a bit, but I just don't think the market was there for it. Bugs and stability were also a huge problem for it too, it felt like it lacked polish.

Sadly, it didn't do much to help Zipper Interactive. Instead of MAG, they should have put more resources and better ideas into making SOCOM 4 a proper SOCOM game instead of what we ended up getting. Sony has always had issues delivering on long form multiplayer series. Killzone was good, Resistance was good, SOCOM was great imo, but none of those titles lasted past their respective generations, especially when you have things like COD taking the reigns on the console shooter market.

I would have personally loved to have another SOCOM (and still do) but in my heart, I know Sony will never do it. COD has such a hold on what people "expect" out of a shooter on consoles that when something comes out, it will be compared to COD. Hell, even Battlefield 6 is the best BF game we have had in a long while (opinion, I know many will disagree) but it is still compared to COD in many many aspects.

Wish Sony would do more with many many series out there, but instead we get reboots, "remakes", and stuff like Concord which was just a tone deaf game to begin with, nobody wanted it.

My favorite console gen , people tend to forget the SOE existed and had DCUO ,Everquest, SWG and Planetside . They were doing live service before live service was a thing . I played and was subbed to DCUO for like 5 years before SOE was sold off and the game kinda fell off for me , it was and is one of the funnest games I've ever played and experienced though , still always in the top downloads list on PSN . To say they're only good at single player games is silly as games like KZ , Warhawk and LittleBigPlanet had an active playerbase until they just killed the servers

I loved Everquest. Sony bought Verant after EQ launched and was already successful then resold it later but Somy did a good job while they owned it

There are thousands of good multiplayer games out there already.

Sony could have struck gold if they never canceled the last of us 2 multiplayer, instead they wasted Billions of dollars on Concord.

I'm surprised with the downvotes. MP TLOU2 would have been amazing. The best part from TLOU2 was the combat and animation. An expanded version of the first MP would have been great. Unfortunately they got in the Destiny guys to look over it and then it got cancelled. Then put a lot of money into Concord...
