The PS4 Pro was announced at Sony's PlayStation meeting. Amongst everything that it adds, there is one major component that is missing.

How am I supposed to watch my Titanic Blu-ray now? I'd pay the extra money for the console to watch it.

Player3Podcast3551d ago

You'll have to find it on a streaming service.

ShowanW3551d ago

now everyone has fiber internet...
now everyone wants to be connected...
it was a fuss 3yrs ago... what changed so drastically since then...

ecchiless3551d ago

@showanw

I think nothing changed, i mean ppl buy the ps4 so they can play games, shocking! right?
I buy consoles to play games, i use my pc for everything else even streaming to the tv....

badz1493551d ago (Edited 3551d ago )

@ShowanW

just like how now everybody suddenly has a UHDTV right?

just like how now suddenly wacthing 4K BD is the defining feature of a console and the Pro is crap without it, right?

and just like how HDR was the next best thing after the S was launched recently and xbox fanboys kept screaming about it . but now suddenly it's all silence and downplaying of HDR because the original PS4 can do it with just an update.

yeah...forget the commanding lead the PS4 already has, forget the Pro will be the most powerful console this November onwards that gives the best performance in games at 1080p, native and upscaled 4k alike, forget true exclusives...I mean, forget all of those which actually matter and let's focus on 4k Bluray instead! /s

freshslicepizza3551d ago

streaming things like netflix is still popular on consoles, not sure why some have issues with people pointing out obvious ommisions like a bluray drive that plays 4k movies. has anyone else ever thought that maybe that drive can also hold more data on the disk FOR GAMES?

but sony saved $15 per unit by not including it but they just increased plus by $10. great deal.

anyways the ps4 pro still offers great value and they also upgraded the hard drive to 1tb which microsoft charges $50 for on their consoles as an upgrade and apple charges $500 extra on their devices for that much storage upgrade.

Maxor3551d ago

Netflix streaming is still very popular on the console because the vast majority of people out there have pre 2010 TVs with either shit apps, or zero smart TV functionality. This makes console streaming very attractive.

The problem with this logic is in regards to the PS Pro is that anyone with a 4K TV from 2014 onward with have amazing streaming app built right into their TV, all with 4K streaming capabilities. Smart TVs are so good now a days that streaming devices like Roku, Apple TV, Amazon Fire and console streaming are utterly pointless. For example my KS8000 Samsung TV streaming is superior to all of these devices.

This is why the value proposition of the PS4 Pro streaming capabilities are so low. With fully featured and lighting fast streaming available at a press of your Samsung remote, why would you want to pick up a DS4 gamepad to watch Netflix? It isn't 2010 anymore.

kraenk123551d ago

@badz149

That was brutal. Lol

Red_Renegade3550d ago

important to who? to gamers? prolly not.

movie fans? maybe they'd want a uhd, but then they prolly wouldn't buy a console for that.

JackBNimble3550d ago

Moldybread
Not everyone buys games on disc, I don't, I buy all my game digitally and that is never going to stop.
So theory of more data on disc is pointless as long as digital down loads exist.

Don't every 4k movie come with a bluray version as well. Cause I know regular blueray comes with bluray, dvd and digital. Should be able to still watch it. Funny how no one complain about nintendo not having dvd playback now everyone complaining this. Ya probably won't use it anyways.

TKCMuzzer3551d ago (Edited 3551d ago )

eh , your Titanic Blu-ray? Well you can watch that on any blu-ray player you currently own and in the new PS4, it has a blu-ray drive.
Proof reading is always a good idea.

Plus why would you buy Titanic on UHD Blu-ray if you don't have a player?

CaptainObvious8783550d ago

"What's Missing from PS4 Pro is What's Important"

That's funny. When buying a GAMES console I thought the most important thing was GAMES...

... Maybe I'm just weird like that.

Personally, I think it was a good move by sony to keep the price down. Most people won't have the right TV to take advantage and going by current trends the people that do will most likely stream it, which the pro can do.

NinjaSqrl3551d ago

I'm pretty sure dropping the UHD Blu-ray player is going to hurt them in the long run.

Player3Podcast3551d ago

I think in the long-run, it won't matter. As internet capabilities allow more people to enjoy 4k, but in the short-term, people expecting 4k video content will be disappointed when they get their PS4 Pro hooked up only to discover it won't stream it.

BarneyS3551d ago

Only time will tell I guess, they've definitely given MS marketing ammunition and they're already using it in every message.
I think Sony made made this decision based on user data from current PS4 users. Sony knows exactly what people do with their PS4 and I think they saw that a small percentage of users use their PS4 to watch bluray movies. Add that to the trend of streaming movies these days and there you go, no 4k bluray drive.

Gorilla_Killa_X3550d ago

Why won't it stream it? I thought they it was only missing UHD Blu-Ray drive, not streaming functionality. Did I miss something?

OB1Biker3550d ago (Edited 3550d ago )

Its only the disc player thats missing.
besides, from the article 'What's Missing from PS4 Pro is What's Important'

Because now whats important to gamers is buying movies on disc? And expensive discs at that

ninsigma3551d ago

No it's not. Uhd blu ray is never going to take off fully. Blu ray barely did, if it did at all.

blackblades3551d ago

Doubt it people still buying the pre order. It's just the small minded people that complains. Ya worried about movies instead of having a good quality game. Watch my stuff on netflix and movie channels and my physical stuff is like anime movies.

Master of Unlocking3551d ago (Edited 3551d ago )

That "run" is not going to be very long to be honest. Probably about 3 years from now the PS5 will come out, and then IT WILL have support for Ultra HD Blu-Rays, as those and 4K TV sets will be more mainstream than they are today.

tontontam03551d ago

It does not benefit sony if people are just going to buy a ps4 pro for bluray playback.

People are just going to buy it because it will be cheaper than a 4k bluray player and never use it for games.

PizzaSteve3551d ago

It didn't hurt the original PS4. Why you think it'll hurt the Pro.

TKCMuzzer3551d ago

I doubt it, by the time 4K really catches on and discs are at a reasonable price we will be into new technology.

With all this fuss about UHD Bluray, I have one question. Can you download 4k digital content or the only way to have 4k content is either through UHD Bluray or high compressed UHD streaming like netflix etc..?

yomfweeee3551d ago

It's a fuss all of a sudden because X1 has it and PS4 doesn't.

DVD still outsells regular Blu-ray by 50% or so. UHD BR is not a big thing yet.

Speak_da_Truth3551d ago

I don't have a single bluray movie and ultimately do not care about UHD Bluray. I'm not saying it's a good thing Sony didn't include it but I personally could care less.

3551d ago
NotEvenMyFinalForm3551d ago (Edited 3551d ago )

You can download 4k movies but they are like 40GB compressed and when fully uncompressed just one movie it's like 160GB. But at the end, if you want to watch a 4k movie in all its glory and not Netflix compressed garbage then the only way is uhd bluray.

kraenk123551d ago (Edited 3551d ago )

If you're a movie fetishist buy a fucking UHD player. Why should everyone pay for that when most people never use it?!

Sitdown3550d ago

@kraenk12
You mean like what Sony did with the ps3 and Blu-ray?

joeorc3551d ago

[The reaction to that news was exclusively negative and with good reason. Without the ability to watch movies and television shows in 4k via a disc, users will be left to do their premium viewing via streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu. ]

Exactly like all the 22 million Xbox one users already do with no BD-UHD optical drive also.
But Xbox one was selling so good, so much better than the xbox360 at this time in its life cycle on the market ...but sure go on...just like those very same Xbox one users have no HDR and will not be able to use or get the VR exclusive games unless they shell out for yet another Xbox.

Please continue ...

ecchiless3551d ago

And here you come with common sense, c'mon joeorc stay with the tune, we need to moan and say is the doom for ps4, cause now ppl buy consoles to see movies and not to play games.

MasterCornholio3551d ago

If the Xbox One sold great until now without a UHD drive why can't the PS4? I mean the PS4 lacks the ability to play UHDs yet it sold twice the amount. Why would they change?

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

dveio32d ago

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing32d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9232d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit32d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing32d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9232d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
