Doesn't seem pointless to me. Some have been whining since jump about the PS4 X1 not being powerful enough. Sony corrects that over the original and some are still whining. Are you kidding me?

Don't forget that developers can improve the framerate and add additional graphical effects.

Whoa, so many hating articles in the PRO direction. I liked it a lot and buy one as soon as I'll be able to. Better graphics and fps? Why not!?

Sorry but if it can run tomb raider at locked 60 frames sony must be crazy. All 1080p games must run at 60 frames. So what is the point of the pro? Fake 4k? No uhd drive for movies, need expensive 4k hdr tv? They should change the name from pro to amateur because that what sony was with this move.

The idea of high end console is good and there is a market,but this is just a half upgrade. The cpu is crap and the gpu is slow and got the same memory, lol. This is will just cut the sales of the slim, nothing more.

More, you got slim launch, psvr launch and pro launch in months. Lol, what a mess.

There was no need for ps4 pro...Sony should have just waited and release a true next gen console like MS is doing.

So from my point of view, if you're looking to buy a PS4, you can buy the slim, or cough up an extra $100. and for that extra $100, you get 500gb more space, HDR, 4K and an improved VR experience. worth it. Now if I already have a PS4, not so much.

They can take a game meant for 1080p and using the same assets render it in 4K at native 4K resolution. Most of those textures will still look quite sharp and fine, many of those textures are already cut from a larger texture which is larger than 1080p in resolution. Unlike an XBOneS which upscales a less than 1080p image to start with, You will really get extra fine detail and deeper depth and visual detail in your FPS games, that's real. Geometry and objects will be 4x sharper for real. What they won't do is use higher resolution textures, surely not what the PC would use. So, 2x the video horsepower 'can' , since it's ALL DEDICATED to just processing pixels and faster processing the same geometry, it can output games at 4K at the same FPS or so it would 1080p. 4K is 4x 1080p (it's 2 across and 2 down... 3840 vs 1920 and 2160 vs 1080, and it's an 8 megapixel screen instead of a 2megapixel screen, so that's 4x). But, where the 18 graphics units WERE processing all the video and geometry etc.. the new 18 units JUST have to make pixels and can finish the same geometry much faster with 2x the units. So, yes, this 'can' push the pixels around, but, it's not going to be PC like 4K. It is better than UPSCALED 4k. The Xbox One S is taking games usually in 720-900p and scaling them 9x or 6x instead of just 4x if games were 1080p native, so, yeah, those games look worse scaled to 4K. The Scorpion will be a fully native 4K system from the stand point of developers.
SONY will have a new machine to follow a year or two after the Scorpio, where they double the on APU (the system on a chip /single chip processor that they use now). power again, and then the system will be as fast as a Scorpio. They might go up to 12 jaguar cores then, or swap in Zen cores by then.
Again, they look like they want to follow the iPad/iPhone model, where the new hardware runs the old games, most of the time faster and better, if not, it can upscale it.

All these wannabe gaming journalist with their flashy alarming headlines for none other than views seriously. We will see this holiday season how the PS4 pro is received.

I think its a good option for people who dont have a PS4 yet. Or for the core fanbase willing to trade up.

I had a coworker ping me this morning on Skype. Asked me if I was thinking about getting one (knowing I'm a gamer) and I just gave a plain "no". He said to me that since he didnt have a PS4 yet he was thinking about getting the Pro, but also said that for people who already have a PS4 its kind of unnecessary. Always interesting to hear opinions like that which exist outside the online gaming community bubble.

That horizons gameplay footage looks absolutely remarkable tho. I'll be waiting on Scorpio for that sort of next-level visual experience.

i give up on the internet.... i swear. its the most aggravating experience to read such pointless articles. Heres the deal; we all seem to love a medium that is very tech based. people (even on this site) go to battle about which console or configuration offers the most power or the best graphics or the best frame rate, or the highest resolution. These things are all based on technical capability and because of the constant war going on about what platform has the best experience of any given game, this seems to actually matter.

Sony seems to be aware of this. They are releasing a new machine that is more capable than the standard ps4. This is to satisfy the people that want more power and capability. The games will still continue to run on a standard ps4. If having better performance, new soon to be mainstream features and better resolution aren't important to you then yes - the ps4 pro is pointless. For those of us who want more and wished that the gen8 consoles would have been a bit more powerful out of the initial launch gate or who want better VR experience (yes standard ps4 vr will not be as impressive as regular games on ps4 due to the increased rendering and frame rates needed) and better streaming experiences, its not pointless at all.

Basically this article says that animations are bad all around even on the beefiest of PCs and since the PS4 Pro isn't doing photo realistic rendering in real time, let alone that all games do realist animations the PS4 Pro is pointless.

Not sure what this dude expected, but if the highest spec'ed PC out there is not cutting it for him than what did he expect a $400 console to do???

Nope, it's not pointless at all. As a few of you may know already since March my PS4 has been "losing" HDMI connection amongst other weird things, last month I called Sony, they said it would be 149.99 for service if they can't fix it they'd replace it... So I said hmm i'll just wait to see if the "NEO" actually comes out this year because it's "pointless" to spend 150 when I can just sell my current ps4 on ebay and spend the difference for the "NEO" for what I thought would be around 500/600 bucks...

An announcement for the PRO, here I am with a faulty PS4 where I was looking to buy a new one/turn in for service anyways and it comes with extra bells and whistles... guess whose buying this consoling November 10th? Also, I will be buying the VR as well... BTW I already have 2 4k tvs (65" & 75") one Sony the other LG... so you already know i'm more than ready :D...

Everyone keeps saying the Ps4 pro is double the power of the ps4 but just looking at GPU stats is a flawed perspective.

Marginally the same CPU and RAM creates bottlenecks that won't allow that 4.2tf to shine.

The Scorpio will have almost double the bandwidth, triple the GPU power, and being a different APU a much more efficient CPU.

Theoretically can probably outperform the NEO by 2-3x

I'm willing to bet on the idea that PS4pro was made to allow support for PSVR. The current ps4 will not be able to accommodate more demanding AAA titles, therefore if Sony want contents support from developers, this is a must have device. Sony is really serious about PSVR that I'm certain. Though it would be quite expansive for general consumers to get both, therefore, Sony really have to remove certain hardware/features to minimize the cost as much as possible. It all make sense.

I'm excited for it! already preordered mine :)

I already owned a standard PS4, and I game on PC for 4k. Will skip this and wait for PS5.

I was really wanting to trade in my ps4 for a pro but after that conference...idk. I think i'll just upgrade the x1 to scorpio instead. No slims either. Guess I'll wait till next year for a new console

4K, HDR, higher performance, more graphical bells and whistles. Pointless? So all of those visual upgrades are pointless for a visual medium? Ok there. Even without a 4K/HDR capable display, connecting it to a regular 1080p display will yield noticeable dividends. Sharper picture. Super-sampling. Higher performance. More content on screen.

Tell me again how the multiplatform strategy was supposed to fix everything. Look at your results and compare them to Nintendo, which keeps thriving with exclusives. Your loyal fans are gone. And let’s not forget the pile of IPs you purchased only to let them rot.

The worst thing is this is down from last years numbers/expectations which was down from the previous years numbers/expectations. You think about how long “down” has been a consistent part of the communication and you realize those subscriptions are what’s holding that boat together. The price cut of gamespass is still a price raise in a string of price raises. They are trying to use players to offset the missing revenue. Now call of duty is out of gamespass, which is literally WHY they bought the company. To draw people to the subscription. They realized they missed a boatload of money and that wasn’t sustainable. Now you pay for it like you would have if they never bought the company… so why buy the company? Mind you those billions still need to be paid back. Yeah it gives you a chance to say we make the biggest FPS… but the internal conversations must be brutal at high level on topics that really matter. Like revenue. Profitability. And ROI for the shopping spree.
