Expectations Vs Reality - No Man's Sky

No Man’s Sky was released on 9th August (10th August in Europe, and 12th on PC Worldwide) on PS4 and quickly became the number one topic of conversation in the games industry, which was probably to be expected given the hype that was surrounding the game going into launch.

I feel like I'm the only one who knew that this game was going to be Minecraft and I was completely cool with the fact that it was a game about exploration and simple crafting elements. What is the biggest hate that people have for this?

glenisahat3580d ago

It sucks as a crafting game too? It's not even a good crafting game. It's a barely decent one.

if you really want an accurate answer, watch "Angry Joe Show's' review of the game. He goes through the whole rollercoaster of emotion... from being excited, happy, frustrated then angry. https://www.youtube.com/wat...

The game is not nearly as far off from the original E3 video as people make out . A lot of things that people expected and think aren't in the game actually are, just done a little differently. There are also many things in the game that wasn't shown in any video. The multi player thing with the very rare possibility of seeing another person and it not being in the game is unfortunate but to be honest it makes only the tiniest of difference to the game since the likelihood in a universe this large of it actually happening is nearly zero. Sean Murrays biggest comparison was to Journey. That should have given most people a good sign of what the game would be like and how they should temper their expectations. There have been many games that received far more attention and hype than No Man's Sky and were truly bad games when released but they never received nearly the amount of hate this small team has, it's disgusting. The bigger problem is that a lot of it is coming from people that have not played the game and would probably not have bought the game anyway.

For some reason I new this game was going to get a lot of criticism(not all the over board hate), I wasn't even sure it would be a game I would want to play but I gave it a chance and I liked it and continue to like it. It's not for everyone but in spite of the game not being exactly like previews it still is a good game to me.

The crafting in this game is very similar to Minecraft and once they add building to the game it will be even more like Minecraft as far as crafting goes.

I don't give a crap what Angry Joe says about anything, not the person I look to for information on gaming and he is far from being the expert he thinks he is.

What is the point of doing an expectation versus reality article if you haven't played the game and don't really touch on the actual expectations/reality issue? Like indie game, Sony possibly giving it too much hype and so forth aside, that doesn't excuse things like how pointless getting to the center of the universe is and the end of the atlas mission.

"If you go to the cinema to watch a movie and you don’t like it, you don’t get a refund. "

Perhaps not in Europe, but in North America you most certainly can go to the cinema and get a refund. You typically need to request it within 30 minutes of the movie starting, the stub must be presented and so forth, though you can get around the 30 minute thing within reason. Like you can see an hour and maybe get it, but you can't see it all and then decide you want a refund.

"Why is that in 2016, if we don’t like something, we feel like we have the right to say “Hey, this isn’t what I wanted, how dare you? How dare you give us something that isn’t as good as you promised it would be, we’re entitled to something better than this!”. "

This is not unique to 2016.

We saw something similar with Ground Zeroes, Alien Isolation and Destiny in 2014, I recall similar things for Duke Nukem Forever in 2011 and many many many more throughout the years.

I think we all have missed interpret the game. We all expected to have multi-player feature. But I guess it means no man at all in the game as the title said "No man's sky". Sarcasm.

Still trying to figure out why people keep complaining about they lied about there being large animals and planets with forests and rings around planets. How do people know these things don't exist. Have these people traveled to every planet, No they haven't so these things surely may exist.

There are large animals and forests. A lot of what people claimed isn't in the game actually is, but some are rare.

I don't thing ringed planets exist though.

skennedy253579d ago

I love the game in spurts. If people really want combat, just have them attack other ships flying on the planet. I can guarantee that the minute you leave the planet, you will get attacked. I have even seen a large mech type sentries on one of the planets, that resemble AT-ST's, when you take some of the pearls out of a plant.
