Ark: Survival Evolved launches first paid DLC from Early Access

"Ark: Survival Evolved still currently resides in Steam’s Early Access programme, however that hasn’t stopped the dino-bashing survival sim from launching its first premium expansion: Scorched Earth. It’s a questionable move from an as yet unreleased game, however Ark is certainly on the more accomplished end of the game-in-progress scale." - PC Gamer

Well this is a new low, DLC for an unfinished game, couldn't even wait till the game was finished and released before working on or releasing DLC

Totally agree, if they have enough time and resources to work on expansions before they actually finish and release the main game then their priorities are really messed up!

@BurnEsauX - It's true, it's a bad sign when an early access game is given DLC before it leaves the early access program, quite frankly Steam should just say "no, if you want to add DLC, fine, but if it's during early access it's just a free update and is part of your core game"

This is the problem with DLC, it should be an afterthought, fair enough whilst planning and developing you'll have ideas that could potentially be added to your game that maybe don't fit the story, so you can shelf them but don't put extra time developing them during the main game development because frankly if they are complete by the time the main game is they should be included with the game for free! It's mentioned a ton but CD Projekt Red really are the best at their DLC, Hearts Of Stone came out 5 months after launch - not 5 days like it seems to be now!

Finally, why do you have to bring an Xbox game into light here? Especially when it's price marked a lot lower than other AAA games.. I could think of another big indie game that was definitely priced at AAA that flopped but I won't mention it because that's not what this is about.

@BurnEsauX Use No Mans Sky then, it's a much better example of a current game that shouldn't have released at a AAA price point, Recore is about 35/40% cheaper than No Mans Sky and it hasn't been released yet so it's not fair to judge it at this point!

@BurnEsauX - The hype for Recore is considerably lower than NMS, considerably - I have an Xbox One and I don't really know anything about it!

I definitely wouldn't say it's getting hyped as a AAA, I just think it's a bad example to use, it's at a lower price point, it's not been given anywhere near the marketing of NMS and it's actually being published by Microsoft Studios....

NMS was published and developed by Hello Games, totally Indie..

We have also gone on a complete rant as this has nothing to the article anymore!

Rofl pour... not poor

DeeBeers3554d ago

I don't mind this, but seems to me like they could be using these resources to finish the game

NotoriousWhiz3554d ago

Ark is amazing, but they should have finished the game.

starbuck3554d ago

Played Ark on xbox since first day of preview. I refuse to buy this until the main game is finished. Bad form WC

NotoriousWhiz3554d ago

I would love to go out and buy this DLC, but I can't condone this activity, and certainly don't want other developers to follow.

Early Access is for fans to help fund the development of the game. Yet they take the funds from the millions of buyers to make paid additions when the game still looks and runs like shit on PC and Xbox One. They still havent even put DX12 in the game when they said it would be at launch. They even made a FreeToPlay version of the game FFS. I don't see how Steam doesn't have rules in place to stop DLC before a game is even done.
