Nioh Beta Impressions

FGE - Nioh is a samurai action role playing game being developed by Team Ninja and being published by Koei Tecmo. The Alpha released earlier this year had over 850,000 downloads but seemed to be met with mixed results particularly over balancing issues and difficulty spikes. The beta being released this month aims to fix some of the problems presented in the alpha and add a new area and slew of new features and enhancements. Nioh’s visual style and gameplay is very reminiscent of From Software’s Soul’s series, and borrows a lot of visual cues and gameplay mechanics from the franchise.

Yeah Team Ninja definitely should have been the one working on Berserk, rather than Omega Force just reskinning Dynasty Warriors yet again.

Movefasta19933558d ago

Or fromsoft,i think they'd nail berserk because they are imo one of the best when it comes to pulling off atmosphere. And Berserk is dark as hell.

XtraTrstrL3558d ago

Plus Dark Souls is insanely influenced by Berserk as is. There's a couple videos showing some of the Berserk references in Dark Souls, this is just 1 of a few vids - https://www.youtube.com/wat...

They made it easier for the casuals. Not even interested in the game anymore.

jholden32493558d ago

You sound like the elitist type that props their ego up on playing games with a reputation for super hard-core difficulty. Just the mere fact they lowered the difficulty- even if it was half a percent- is enough to give you ammo for touting superiority.

I'm sure you won't touch this "filthy casuals" game with a 10 foot pole now.

DarXyde3558d ago

Not that I disagree, but I do hope there's a mode in the final game where you can actually increase the difficulty. While I certainly don't mind the difficulty where it is now, I would rather throw it on a harder difficulty if possible. It actually helps me improve faster and, for me, playing on harder difficulties helps me to prolong my experience with the game. The result is, of course, frequent deaths. Honestly, I don't mind.

nitus103558d ago (Edited 3558d ago )

It's not so much the so-called "filthy casuals" since most gamers start off as a casual and graduate as a gamer.

What annoys gamers is when the "filthy casuals" start whinging about a game being too hard for them and acting as spoilt princesses because the game does not have a difficulty setting or slider.

I do think the one excuse for some people who want to play a difficult game that really takes the spoilt princess award is "Oh I don't have that much time to play" when the game is an RPG and normally (speed run excluding) would take the average gamer 30 to 80 hours or more to play it. If these people don't have the time why do they want to play a game like that?

DragonDDark3558d ago

It's not really for casuals. It's still pretty difficult

robtion3558d ago

The game is harder than any of the Souls games so not sure what you are talking about. Pretty sure you couldn't beat any of the bosses.

sullynathan3558d ago

you sure that its harder than any souls game?

robtion3558d ago

@sullynathan Well the demo is. Obviously haven't played the full game so can't really say. I have died more in the 2 demos than in the entirety of any Souls/borne game though.

sullynathan3558d ago

I'll see next week but I highly doubt it. Early impressions I've heard says the level design isn't all good.

AnubisG3558d ago

Your loss than. I would say, give it another chance.

KakashiHotake3558d ago

Cool game but definitely has a Dark Souls feel to it. not sure if I'll purchase it though because I'm not really fan of overly hard games, though this does at least seem easier than Dark Souls.

robtion3558d ago

Nope. Much harder than Dark Souls. The bosses are particularly insane.

Spike20XX3558d ago

it IS easier than Dark Souls, especially if you grind enough levels, you'll be tearing down the boss that gave you problems

nitus103558d ago

That is pretty much what you can do in Souls/Bloodborne games although in the case of the Souls games if you are online the higher the level and un-hollowed (Dark Souls 1) the more chance you will have to engage in PvP. Sometimes you will meet a cheat (not sure how on a console) who will have a similar level to you but an insane HP (max is about 2,600).

In Dark Souls when I have consulted the sinners list (you can get it after you defeat the two gargoyles on the church and ring the bell) I have seen some with HP's in in the millions. Even one had ridiculous stats and was level "0" which does not exist. I have even seen some that had acceptable levels but with weapons and armor that could not be carried and used for their levels. To these people I give my middle finger and switch off.

Dario_DC3558d ago

Day one for me, loving the beta, still has a few things to work on but it's a ton of fun and challenge.

The Nioh franchise has sold over 6 million copies worldwide

Team Ninja: "The Nioh franchise has sold over 6 million copies worldwide now!"

FallenAngel19841718d ago

At 6 million NiOh is on the cusp of nearly outselling Ninja Gaiden’s 6.8 million with just only 2 titles under its belt

This could mean Team Ninja may see no reason to return to producing new NG games

CaptainHenry9161718d ago

But what if a new Ninja Gaiden sells well?

FallenAngel19841718d ago (Edited 1718d ago )

The latest Ninja Gaiden: Master Collection had sold 240,000 units worldwide at last count

Unfortunately that may not be as high enough a number to convince Team Ninja to also commit to continuing Ninja Gaiden alongside Dead or Alive and NiOh.

And when they aren’t working on those they’re focused on licensed properties like Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3: The Black Order and Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin.

I wish I were wrong but that may be how Tecmo Koei sees it. Hopefully they prove me wrong and produce Ninja Gaiden 4 at some point

Yi-Long1718d ago

To be fair, does anyone still trust Team Ninja with Ninja Gaiden*?

Let’s be honest here, it was Itagaki who created Ninja Gaiden greatness, with NG1, NG Black (improved version of NG1), and Ninja Gaiden 2.

The Sigma versions of 1 & 2, done without Itagaki, while decent/good, never lived up to the originals, and NG3 was a mess.

And they half-assed the collection, so many huge fans of the series never bothered picking that up.

I’d be excited if Itagaki would announce a return to the action ninja genre. If Team Ninja would announce a NG4, I’d be skeptical.

To be fair, Team Ninja DID show they’re still capable of releasing greatness with the Nioh games, but with Ninja Gaiden, without Itagaki, they have never been able to reach the quality of NG Black again.

(* … does anyone still trust them with the DOA games, for that matter … !? )

deadfrag1718d ago (Edited 1718d ago )

Things are not seen from that stand point.Ninja Gaiden Never had a game produced for PS4 or Xbox One from the ground up.Nioh sold 6 milion because exposure and Marketing are way bigger this days than they were on PS3 and Xbox 360 generation. The Ninja Gaiden collection was never going to sell much since theres nothing new on them, this collection is actually worse to what was already available on Xbox 360 and can be play by BC on any Xbox One console.Ninja Gaiden needs a new game that shows new stuff and that gets backed in the marketing like Nioh. This collection games have already been played by anyone that likes Ninja Gaiden years ago it didnt bring nothing new to the table it was obvious that it would not sell very well.

ocelot071718d ago

That's great and it's now free on the epic game store.

FinalFantasyFanatic1717d ago

I just picked it up a couple of hours ago, it was a nice surprise to see it there.

jznrpg1718d ago

Well made games glad they did well .

Brazz1718d ago

they deserve this, Nioh is a amazing game. Hopefully they will expand and make a more ambitious game and have even more sales.

northpaws1848d ago

Talking about Goku, I used to like him a lot, but he just became a selfish jerk that only want to fight and left his family behind to rot lol, at least we see Vegeta spent some time with family here and there lol

Teflon021848d ago

Goku's far from selfish. He's just an idiot with an addition.
Also Dragon Ball Z starts with Piccolo basically being Gohan's dad. Not sure how these things became a realization in 2021 lmao

Germaximus1848d ago

PS Now additions have been rocking for quite awhile now.

iwin861848d ago

Street Of Rage 4 is awesome. Big recommendation.

RosweeSon1848d ago

Just bought physical 😏🤷🏻‍♂️ 🤣 does look great tho.

1848d ago
LucasRuinedChildhood1848d ago

Nioh was given out on PS Plus around a year ago (most people who have PS Now also have PS Plus) and Jump Force is not particularly good. There's a big gap in quality between PS Plus and PS Now.

Teflon021848d ago

Streets of Rage is a fantastic game. Didn't know about Nioh though. I don't think I have it. Though I'd rather play the ps5 version in the future

Petebloodyonion1848d ago

Streets of Rage 4 is a must-play title if you like beat em up.
Also, not everyone has PS+ so Nioh is still a good game.
