Games Should be More Expensive

Here’s something you don’t hear every day: Games should be expensive. In fact, games are cheaper now than they’ve ever been. Not only are indie, downloadable games available as a cheaper alternative to full $60 titles, but even full-priced titles are cheaper than ever when accounting for inflation.

yeah.... no. I don't think anyone here is sitting in front of their computer screens saying, "you know... you're right... I *should* have to spend more for video games."

FamilyGuy3572d ago

We get DLC in the games that come out today to mitigate the price discrepancy that inflation should have caused. They sell us $60 base model sort of games at retail but fully expect a significant portion of us to also throw extra money at them after release.

Games shouldn't "be more expensive", they ARE more expensive. They're just broken into sections whereas older games had all these "extras' as unlock-able achievements an sections within the game.

indysurfn3572d ago (Edited 3571d ago )

I agree 100% FamilyGuy! Could not have said it any better!
So I will make this point instead:

85% of all articles are paid for. Is this one? Who is this "brave" company? That will raise the price for us EA?
Now I'm sure that is a paid article. They deleted that guys post that I was talking about! ROFL!

Quote:
" I hope that one BRAVE game company takes the plunge."?

What they really wanted to say:
" I hope that one GREEDY game company takes the plunge. and licks his chops"

One thing the article avoided letting people know. Once you make the game it is how many you SELL that determines the profit margins. And despite all the talk about consoles going away there are more, and more games sold every year across consoles, and hand helds, and pc's(desktops), and mobile phones, and portables(tablets, laptops), and smart TV's so that is why game companies are getting more and more profitable, and are popping up everywhere. Back in the day 1 million sold was WOW, now that is not impressive.

So no they should not keep most people from being able to afford games anymore. I used to make only 50,000 a year back in, Now I make a solid six figures a year, and I still think 59$ is high even though it is only $10 more. Most people make half what I make, I don't see how they can justify it because I'm no tight wad, I'll spend, and give in a second. Go ahead up the price, and see what happens "BRAVE" company that probably paid for this article.

indysurfn3572d ago (Edited 3572d ago )

I have to give an example of my math so LETS be very conservative, and say you only keep $20 out of $59.99 sale of game. If you sell 200,000 copies( considered failure) you would have $4,000,000 usually enough to cover the cost. $20 x 200,000=$4,000,000.

If you sell 500,000 you will have $10,000,000 dollars MORE than enough to cover most games (except AAA turn based JRPG's). If you have a block buster, and sell only 3,000,000 your dancing in the streets with 60 million dollars ($60,000,000)! And remember that is being VERY conservative!

PhucSeeker3572d ago (Edited 3572d ago )

I'm that guy. Game engine is powerful nowadays (they also are not cheap). They can do lots of stuffs. But they have to be tweaked much more in order to bring out the creator's original ideas. Most of the game (texture/models/movements/game play/...) are made by hands. Games became more and more complex which need more and more QA.

You guys ask the game-maker to make a better product but won't be willing to pay more, how the hell do game companies find the money to fund their next project ? If your boss asks you to do more overtime/improve your work immensely but won't raise your salary, will you keep on doing your job then ?

IndominusRex3573d ago

**** you! You're the reason why we have $50 season passes!!!

Big_Game_Hunters3573d ago

Actually the people that want cheaper games are the reason we have 50$ season passes.

BattleAxe3573d ago (Edited 3573d ago )

lol not a chance! You can download UE4 and CryEngine 3 for free, with royalties only being paid after you make a certain amount of profit. Almost anyone out there can make a game these days. The newer game engines have made it easier than it's ever been to develop a video game, and platform holders like Steam, Xbox and PlayStation have made it easier than it's ever been to get a game to market. And on top of that, social media like Twitter and Facebook, and video streaming sites like Youtube and Twitch have made it infinitely easier to advertise new games.

We always hear about how the newest and latest game engines will allow one person to do the job of what used to take 10 people back in the day. These map packs and season's passes do little more than increase the profit margins of the developers. I don't think there's anything wrong with that if the developer can get away with it, but don't come around telling us that games are more expensive to produce than ever before, especially when these huge game developers/publishers like EA and Activision constantly re-use assets from previous games. It's literally like McDonalds charging prices that you would see at an expensive steak house.

DragonKnight3573d ago

Publishers, most notably EA, have said in the past that the $60 model is too much, some devs have said that games should cost $40.

Pubs and devs know that games should be cheaper, they know that they are solely responsible for inflated budgets and unrealistic development standards.

But we've been stupidly paying them $60 (more outside the U.S. as, no matter what happens to its economy, for some reason the price of games never changes in the U.S.) for so long they'll never actually adopt the $40 model.

Big_Game_Hunters3573d ago

@dk andbattle axe
They can say whatever they want, their actions show otherwise. Or do you believe everything they tell you?

BattleAxe3572d ago

One other thing that I forgot to mention, is that most of the big game publishers, and also the platform holders like Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo, are all publicly traded companies. This means that they must reach certain profit targets to please their share holders. Black Ops 3 raked in over $1 Billion dollars in sales after two months on the market if I remember correctly. It's all about making big money.

As for your comment:

"@dk andbattle axe
They can say whatever they want, their actions show otherwise. Or do you believe everything they tell you?"

What are you talking about? Who can say whatever they want? You make no sense!

xetiro3572d ago

@BattleAxe
I think you got lost in your answer. You almost made it sound so trivial to develop real games lol

Big studios always had built their own game engines, iterate on them, and used them to speed up the process of development. That is just one part of the process. Game development is not one person job. Game development is multi-disciplinary. Even considerable small productions made by independent studios require a lot of work from multiple people from different field domains. Most games takes years to develop, and even annual games are direct consequence of always-on continusly development. Also, supporting multiple platforms is not just press a button.

So ultimately, the accessibility of professional game engines like UE4 and stores like Xbox Live and PlayStation Network, it's an opening chance for this industry continuing to grow by means of more talented people invest their careers on it.

indysurfn3572d ago (Edited 3572d ago )

No the reason we have $$$ season passes is because companies wanted even more profit, and the dummies at the begging was defending them, and most importantly being the first to buy season passes. Which means companies will keep spiting games and making season passes. It went from experimenting to everyday because we can't think things through realistically even when your buddies are trying to tell you. Instead you listen to news articles (85% are paid for and not by your grandma!) And THAT is why we have season passes.

I played Trails of cold steel a 120 hour linear turn based JRPG game PS3! It is a high budget to make, no season passes (even though you can buy small customs, and items). And they made hecka dollars in sales why? Because they took the financial risk to make a 120 hour turn based JRPG.

Start ups can't do that. But Large companies dont have to do this, it's just greed, with no risk that they are after.
Forget that! You want me to pay up, you pay up first!

Someone didn't read the article... It was about how we hate season passes and they could possibly be eliminated with more expensive games.

NickAwesome3573d ago

Absolutely not, they are already super-expensive, especially if you have to pay for online, dlc, microtransactions and all that crap

Not at all, considering The Witcher 3 (which is a massive game) cost $81M to develop and market, has sold over 6 million copies, even at it's current price of $34 on PS4 on Amazon selling 6M copies that adds up to a total revenue of $204M, the game could have made way more than that overall.
Take away the development and marketing costs for the title and it's made $123M in profit based on this hypothetical math.

Those involved in making games should make a profit, they should pay their staff a good wage, but they should not rinse the customer base they claim to love making games for of all they can.
At a consistent $60 per game sold if the Witcher 3 continued to sell the 6 million units it has then it would have made $279M after costs are deducted, enough for CD Project Red to have developed The Witcher 3 3.44X over.

Games should not even cost $60 a piece, they should be lower and more copies would be sold, developers and the other people involved in making games do not in any way lose out.

Games with less content and lower cost should cost even less, they'll still make a lot of money for game development studios and publishers.

They for sure chose the worst way to deal with it

-Foxtrot39d ago

Funny considering Bruce left half way through development and now we get told there was an internal conflict with the story direction.

Makes you think…

HectixRose41d ago

I think it was good decision, if he was still alive, he would have been a mascot just like Kratos, drake and many others. These old dudes gotta die for new characters to take center stage with their own storyline. They keep dragging the emotional baggage into many sequels and eventually the story just turns into absolute shit show.

JEECE41d ago

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

CantThinkOfAUsername40d ago

I thought the more common complaint about Uncharted franchise was how the main cast are the good guys acting so nonchalantly while killing hundreds in cold blood (aka the dissonance between gameplay and story cutscenes). They just did it again in Part II.

Soy41d ago

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

DarXyde40d ago

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

Ashunderfire8640d ago

Sorry just had to say this lol! RICKYYYY!

Man Cuba Gooding Jr was miscast in that movie, but that part was cringey it was sad and funny at the same time man.

Ashunderfire8640d ago (Edited 40d ago )

I understand but the way they went about killing Joel, was poorly executed. Even the show of the Last of Us games tried to improved it, but it was just as bad. Well at least Joel got to know the reason why he had to die, before the death happened in the show. That part gave us the full context, but the game just let it happen with no pay off.

Joel death should have been a midway thing through the story, so we at least get to play him a little more with Ellie. Abby didn’t need to be this Hulk looking woman, but more like the show Abby which is a beater idea in my opinion.

The only ND game that was so disappointing to me I couldn't finish it.

pwnmaster300041d ago

Honestly as much as I loved the game, they could have just not killed him off.
I get it creator vision and all but killing a character that made you millions is just wrong imo. At least have him go down fighting.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle40d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
