Final Fantasy: The First Time

NZgamer: "I can remember my first time playing Final Fantasy like it was yesterday. It was autumn in ‘99, and my family had just moved to a small town on the South Island’s west coast. I already desperately wanted a PlayStation, but the isolation that came with being uprooted like this made the longing so much more intense – with no friends, in a town where there was nothing to do, a console seemed like the solution to all my problems. So, you can imagine my excitement when I found an ad for an internet plan that included a free PlayStation at sign-up, and my parents actually decided to go for it!"

99? How young are you? There were already 12 or 13 FFs out by then.

In 1999 Square released FF-VIII..the eighth installment.

That also included FF Legends 1 and 2, Mystic Quest and I thought one other. But semantics I guess.

I’d love to know how many units have been sold of all the Final Fantasy VII franchise games, including the original, the remakes, spin offs such as Crisis Core, and mobile games Ever Crisis. I bet a fair few copies.

Modern day publisher be like: "Failed to meet sales expectations. Pivoting to live service."

If you already own it... There, I saved you the click on a deliberately misleading article.

DivineHand125132d ago

I bought the game yesterday on steam for $4 because Square Enix is trying to replace it with a version that has no mod support.

Prior to yesterday, I had no idea the game had so many great mods until people started making a fuss out of it.

Knightofelemia132d ago

You can thank FF7 scaring Baldur's Gate 2's director 'S***less' for every RPG since

But BG2 didn't emerge in a vacuum, and in a recent chat with Slandered Gaming it emerged that—while we can thank BG2 for a lot of our favourite RPGs since—we have a whole other game to thank for BG2. That'd be Final Fantasy 7, which lit a fire under BG2 director James Ohlen to go all out with the game's structure and companions, per Trent Oster—who worked on the original Baldur's Gate and has since become CEO of Beamdog, the studio behind the BG1 and BG2 Enhanced Editions.
