No Man’s Sky Reviews: Can It Pull A DOOM?

It's always ominous when reviews for a game are withheld until after its release- history shows us that the game almost never turns out well, which is why reviews are deferred until after the game has had a chance to get some sales in.

"Pull a Doom"?

Be an iconic title which was an archetype for it's genre, reimagined and modernized?

DrierofLeaves3611d ago

If you read the article, you would know that the comparison was meant to be favorable (as in, it would be so great if NMS would 'pull a DOOM')

Godmars2903611d ago (Edited 3611d ago )

"Revive a 'dead' genre, aka, something no one's really bothered with the past few years because of the focus on FPS?

Mind you they, the No Man's Sky guy(s), still have to do a decent job of it. And they'll catch flack regardless because that's what the community is.

Kingthrash3603610d ago

I see what you mean gaming bolt....but it took me a while to get it. (Wasn't gunna bite and give you a click.) Your title will make people think you are talking about the recently released DOOM you should have put a date next to it so they'd know you mean pioneer a new line of gaming....or just change the title to something less vague

Kleptic3610d ago (Edited 3610d ago )

^I can't tell if people are kidding...what am I missing?

The reference to 'pulling a doom' is entirely related to Doom 2016 having radio silence before release back in may...a publisher move that typically ends with a game being awful. Remember all the head lines? 'We didn't get a review copy for Doom so it's going to suck/vaporware/trash/moveon, etc.' Doom 2016 was fantastic, which doesn't go in line with the lack of review copies given to the media...

NMS is following a similar publisher approach...right? That is all this title is about...It has nothing to do with genre defining this or that, or pioneering a new line of gaming or w/e...it's how NMS releases this week and the media hasn't been allowed to talk about it yet.

Doom was a ground breaking game in its day that launched the FPS genre (along with Wolfenstein 3D).

No Man's Sky could be just as ground breaking, we'll see.

C-H-E-F3610d ago

Hmm, GoldenEye on atari was the game that laid the ground work for doom... perhaps you aren't that old.

Vipre773610d ago (Edited 3610d ago )

@C-H-E-F:
GoldenEye was on N64, not "atari", and released in 1997 while DOOM released in 1993. So, no. You're way, way, wrong. Wolfenstein 3D was the first pseudo-3D FPS game and DOOM game out a little afterward. DOOM was the first FPS game to add enemies at different elevations, even though vertical aiming was done automatically, and it was also the first to feature a PvP Deathmatch mode.

LordMaim3610d ago

@C-H-E-F: Not sure if trolling, or just wrong.

uth113610d ago

@Vipre77 - The different elevations in Doom is what sold me. I had an old Amiga, thinking about getting a PC at the time but kept putting it off.

My friend showed me Wolfenstein 3D, I was like that's kinda cool, but I didn't love it.

Later he showed me Doom, my jaw dropped and that's when I decided I had to get a PC!

No, "pull a Doom" as in "even though the review embargo was lifted after the title released, it still got good reviews".

LordMaim3610d ago

Or South Park: Stick of Truth. I still remember cancelling my pre-order on that game when I didn't hear any reviews the day before release, and was pleasantly surprised to find out that it was one of the best games that year.

While I'm still cautious when I don't hear reviews the day before release of a game, I like to remember South Park as an example that sometimes it isn't always a PR move.

DigitalRaptor3611d ago (Edited 3611d ago )

The game is already appearing to be great and to deliver on its promises without the day one patch.

I don't think it's that ominous, and the contents of the day one patch is the game that most players will be experiencing, so doesn't it serve better for those reviewing it to deliver a greater deal of transparency and honesty about the delivered game, especially one this surrounded by fallacious scrutiny?

Tobsesan3610d ago

First time ever I heared someone say "wait for day 1 patch, it makes the game so much better"

Dark_Knightmare23610d ago

Really either you're naive, oblivious to gaming or have selective memory because plenty of games that had a day one patch improved and made for a better experience.

Tobsesan3610d ago

Doesnt mean we had people coming out claiming you cant Review the game right now. Remember what ppl said about the Gears beta? Bashing a game 8 months before release.

Herpofderpopol3610d ago

"Wait for day one patch" What!? The patch thats available to you when you put the disc in? And on top of that, who wouldnt be excited to hear that a game they were already excited about, was receiving significant improvements from what they were shown? Major games are getting downgrades with no indication, and somehow Hello games are getting picked on for this, and with an attitude far better than publishers\devs who get way more than they deserve.

uth113610d ago

If I see a game has a day one patch, I'll always wait until it installs out of fear I won't have a good experience. You mean I've been doing it wrong all this time? /s

DigitalRaptor3610d ago

Here we go again.
I come back to this site, and the people I find to be least perceptive to fact and logic haven't changed at all.

1) Where did I say that?

2) The patch is already available, there's no waiting.

3) The patch does make the game much better, cause it contains a heap of improvements and game changers.

Having read comments like this, it's clear that NMS is going to have so many troll comments associated with its success.

SimpleYet_Not3611d ago

Instead of Doom just say Minecraft.

NohansenBoy3610d ago

That would be a lot to live up to. PC/Java version alone almost over 25million sales and has overall positive reviews from users and critics and it still gets free content updates from users and Mojang. Can NMS live up to that?

sammarshall1023611d ago

I'll be kinda shocked if this reviews as well as Doom from what I've seen thus far

Lon3wolf3611d ago

I'll be kind of shocked if it doesn't, but seriously I think this will be quite a hard title to review due to it's randomness on what you will experience.

There, there, there, you will have games soon too, almost autumn.

sammarshall1023610d ago

Quite frankly I'm hyped for Gears of War 4, Forza Horizon 3, Dead Rising 4 (timed) Cuphead and Recore

All of those look better than No Man's Sky

notachance3610d ago (Edited 3610d ago )

you forgot to add #xboxhasnogames at the end of your comment

Trez12343610d ago

No shotguns, explosions or fast cars. The game must suck for sure :/

Oh, and no live TV which would've made this a must buy AAAA game.

DigitalRaptor3610d ago (Edited 3610d ago )

It appears that you'd rather talk about and buy a tepid and repetitive shooter (Quantum Break), with a short campaign, that didn't live up to its promise and flopped, and will have absolutely no future DLC - all for the tidy sum of $60 - than a huge, open-ended, and diverse sci-fi exploration game with tons of discoverability, replayability, lore, and amazing FREE updates due to its success, that you're never going to buy.

But then it occurred to me, you'd rather talk about Xbox "exclusives" regardless of anything, as evidenced by your list of "exclusive" games that you posted down below, and you fail to tell us why they look better than No Man's Sky. For obvious reasons.

Come the release date, my senses and my imagination will be running wild in chase of discovering everything this game has shaped up to offer, as promised. I hope you truly enjoy waiting an entire year, every year, for steady stream of quality exclusive game content on your box. Meanwhile in a day or two I will be playing one of the most anticipated and ambitious games ever made, and you'll be damage controlling something you don't even understand.

Rashid, where was your ominous article for Doom. I can't find it :) Or any other game for that matter. Are you getting a review copy or do you have to go out and purchase one out of curiosity.
