Xbox One S Has the Best Controller Ever Made, Says Microsoft

Microsoft shocked the world with a brand-new lineup of Xbox One consoles at E3 2016, and they are moving swiftly with their plan to provide different options for gamers.

No.. That would go to the Elite controller

darthv723628d ago

Well I guess they need to release the Elite S controller then.

thekhurg3628d ago

No they just need to stop ignorantly claiming everything they release and do is somehow "the best" thing ever.

First best line up
The best line up again
Now best controller

Get over yourself MS

S2Killinit3628d ago

I also have the best controller ever made. I made it myself. Its great.

dumahim3628d ago

@thekhurg
Don't forget from E3, "the smallest Xbox One yet." Well not shit. It's the first redesign.
Or how about the Forza Racing Championship video they just released today.
https://www.youtube.com/wat...
"The largest esports competition in Forza history" Isn't it the first esports competition in Forza history?

But really, this isn't anything new for MS. They seem to think these words really mean something and people won't see through the BS.

nitus103628d ago

@dumahim

If you read any of my posts, you will see I am no fan of Microsoft, however, they do have the best PR team and many (read nearly all) believe them to the point of being scary.

UltraNova3628d ago (Edited 3628d ago )

I prefer the ds4 as it fits my mits perfectly + i love the touchpad and headphone jack! But I have to admit the xb1 rumble triggers are a thing of tactile feeback beauty.

Sony please shamelessly implement force feedback triggers on the new DS controller, dont worry I will forgive you!

mark_parch3628d ago

@thekhurg

but last years lineup probably was microsofts best and this years is definetely their best. the xbox one s controller is also definetely the best standard controller

Bansai3628d ago

I'm a playstation gamer myself, but honeslty DS4 is utter trash, the ergonomy is there, but the build quality is laughable. Gimme XO controller any day of the week.

Kingthrash3603628d ago

And people say MS don't lie for a buck lol

pinkcrocodile753628d ago

I have to xbox one controller has performed better than the ps4 controller in my experience.

The ps4 is a little more powerful, yes, however I've had 3 ps4 controllers to 1 xbox one controller.

The fact is the PS4 controler is shoddily made in my experience. My new one is f***'d wont charge or lightup, despute running all known fixes.

I've kicked it back to GAME.

ThePope3628d ago

For a regular controller it is the best ever made though.

Sparta073628d ago

No is not. For you, your opinion then yes. But it's not a fact
DS4 for me. My opinion.

Brazz3628d ago

I think Ds4 is better. Just my opinion

starchild3628d ago

I honestly haven't used the Xbox One controller yet, let alone the new Xbox One S controller. How does the Xbox One controller compare to the Xbox 360 controller?

The 360 controller is still the controller I choose to use most often for my PC games. I like the DS4 fairly well, but its form doesn't fit my hands as well. I like the flexibility of the Steam controller, but there's a learning and adaptation curve I haven't fully gone through.

darthv723628d ago

What makes the DS4 so much better than the other DS controllers is that they went all the way back to the very first dual analog controller (not the DS1) and took the longer grips and the concave thumbstick design. With the exception of the dual analog and the DS4, all other controllers in the DS line used convex thumbsticks (even sixaxis)

I always wondered why they made such odd changes to the first dual shock and carried them forward to the Ps2 and Ps3....?

Unspoken3628d ago

Used both and the Xbox controller is by far the better controller. So many design wins.

Tobsesan3628d ago (Edited 3628d ago )

ROFL DS4, ye probably the best Playstation controller ever made, which isnt that hard to be honest.

Nintendo Gamecube Controller, Xbox 360 Controller, Xbox One S Controller and the Xbox Elite Controller are the best controllers ever made.

Ask gamers that are not fanboys and tried all of those. Noone will mention the DS4, just because its better as the DS3 doesnt mean its one of the best controllers. Couldnt get much worse getting forward from the DS3.

Just look at PC Gaming, noone ever uses playstation controllers. You could argue Xbox Controllers are the default ones, but to be honest, they are just way better.

GTgamer3628d ago

Honestly I used every controller to date and they seriously all good to me none truly overshadows the other except the first xbox controller that thing was big for no damn reason but still whooped a** with it in Def Jam ffny but whatever yall wanna make everything into a competition it's boring now guys chill.

dumahim3628d ago

@starchild

It's a good controller, but there's a couple things I don't like about it. It feels bigger and I don't like how rigid the RB and LB buttons are and hinged on the side facing the center, so unlike the 360 controller, you can't press the button near the inner side. Then the triggers have a curved edge to them that fits the design of the shell nicely when not being used, but when you press it, it leaves a big gap and hard edge of the shell exposed. But I do like the trigger rumble and the thumbsticks have held up really well through the years. Granted, the fact that I don't play nearly as much on the Xbox as I do the PS4 probably plays a big part of it. The d-pad is actually pretty good too, except on mine, down started giving me problems a few weeks ago and it's hard to get it to register now, so I might need to buy a new one.

nitus103628d ago (Edited 3628d ago )

Basically, the DS4 has all the features of the XBox controllers plus an inbuilt speaker, headphone/microphone jack, multi-function touchpad and a six-axis gyroscope. Admittedly it is up to the game designers to make use of these extra features and some do although the majority don't. In fact, it is up to the game developer to decide on which buttons and features on the controller will be supported and even what customizations will be allowed.

Kingthrash3603628d ago

Xbox 360 controller is better than the xbo s controller.

Christopher3627d ago

I very much dislike the R1/L1 buttons my XBO controller.
I very much dislike the thumbsticks on my PS4 controller.

Neither are perfect, but I admit that the PS4 one fits my hands and playstyle better. But, not by that much.

I still think the 360 controller is better

2pacalypsenow3628d ago

Feels more sturdy, a little heavier and the bumper buttons are placed better. For me it just feels a lot better than my Xbox 1 controller

Unspoken3628d ago

I felt exactly this way when I made the transition. Now the 360 controller feels too small and the sticks feel cheap in comparison

3628d ago
BillytheBarbarian3628d ago

I feel the same. The thumb sticks were a little bigger or something. My thumbs slip off x1

babadivad3628d ago (Edited 3628d ago )

I agree as well as far as feel in the hands. The 360 controller was solidly built. The original X1 controller felt cheap when I first got it. Seemed to be made of hollow plastic. And apparently it felt cheap because it was cheaply made. My Joysticks started to drift after a month. Slightly at first then severely[unplayable levels].

I got it replaced from MS for free and it seems the gave me one of the better constructed ones[seems they have slyly upgraded the materials of the controllers since launch]. Because this new controller and the new X1 controller I bought feels a lot better than the launch day pad I had before. Still not up to the rock solid feel of the 360 pad but MUCH netter than the launch pad that came with my box.

Besides the feel of the pad, I noticed they made it slightly smaller than the 360 pad as well. For someone with relatively large hands, it made it a little more difficult to use for me. I'm used to it now I guess, still wish it was SLIGHTLY larger.

I do love the rumble of the new pads and the analog sticks feel more accurate than the 360's. Over all, it's an improved pad from the 360, but the latter just felt better in hand. I like the bumper buttons on the 360's pad as well.

I'd give the slight nod to the 360 pad.

Shubhendu_Singh3628d ago

When it comes to Microsoft PR, everything they made is "Best thing ever made" according to them.

This is one of the biggest reasons I've never owned an Xbox. A lot of people sure love this controller but the offset joysticks make it absolutely unusable for me.

Ricegum3628d ago

I agree. And whenever I use an Xbox controller is just feels rather big and chunky. PS4 definitely edge it in terms of controller this gen.

sammarshall1023628d ago (Edited 3628d ago )

The Dual Shock 4 feels too light and cheap IMO and the battery life is horrible from what I hear

At yomfweeee I want something that feels sturdy like the Xbox One controller not something that feels flemsy

yomfweeee3628d ago (Edited 3628d ago )

@sam
Controlling being light is a bad thing? Because you'd rather hold a brick or something?

Gazondaily3628d ago

Nah the DS4 feels cheaply made in comparison to the Xbox One controller. When i first tried them together, the demo units i tried at Gamescom for the DS4 were superior.

The Xbox One controller for me is much better. The Elite Controller obviously is in a whole different league altogether

EpicSandwich3628d ago

Even though I only own a ps4, the ds4 doesn't even come close to the xbox one controller

I'll never understand the issue with the sticks, ever. Does your equilibrium get thrown off because your thumbs are not on the same level?

gangsta_red3628d ago

It's seriously the most ridiculous complaint I have heard against the xbox

Genuine-User3628d ago (Edited 3628d ago )

I personally don't have a problem with the sticks. But those that have an issue probably feel similar to how I felt playing Brothers with an x360 controller. Boy did I struggle controlling that game.

@gangsta_red

Why?

Angeljuice3628d ago (Edited 3628d ago )

Well, it works both ways. The amount of Xbox users who complain about "symmetrical" thumbsticks being uncomfortable, you'd think they all had birth defects.

gangsta_red3628d ago

Except I have never seen an xbox user complain about the symmetrical thumbs sticks. But there is definitely a large amount of sony users who can't seem to lift their left thumb 1cm to use the left stick. Must be a cultural thing.

dumahim3628d ago

The only reason I think someone would say that is because they're only used to using one of them. I've had all the Xboxs and PlayStations and it's never bothered me. It's just something you get used to.

gangsta_red3628d ago (Edited 3628d ago )

That is laugh out loud hilarious if the offset joysticks make it unusable. Unless you have infant hands then I can understand.

It's equally hilarious because the the Xbox left joystick is actually aligned with the buttons on the right unlike the Duelshock controller. Unless you only play games that require both thumbs always be on the right and left analog stick.

http://screencast.com/t/5r7...

By the way...how do you type on a keyboard, that must be excruciating.

Goldby3628d ago

Some of us just like the good old fasioned dual joysti ks in the same places.

Itz equally hilarious that you use a reason that the joystick lines up with the face buttons as a reason you dont understand why people prefer the ds4.

In my eyes, its more comfy and the joystick locations feels more natural in my hands. Afterall if tou type on a phone, one thumb isnt in the top left corner and the other in the bottom right. They are both at the bottom of the screen. Just like the ds4 controller

gangsta_red3628d ago (Edited 3628d ago )

@Golby

I have no problem with anyone who prefers the DS4 over the Xbox controller. I have a problem with a ridiculous statement like yours and the one above.

"...lines up with the face buttons as a reason you dont understand why people prefer the ds4."

Because Golby, that is how 98.999..% of current games are played. Right stick controls the character while the buttons make the characters perform certain actions. Not too many (IF ANY) games require you to 'rest' both thumbs on both joysticks.

That's why it's funny to read people's reasons about the left joystick not being aligned with the right.

And for the DS4, what about your left thumb that sits on the buttons? Those are not aligned with the right joystick. Does your left thumb strain also?

"They are both at the bottom of the screen"

Except you are not and never just laying your thumbs on the "bottom' of the screen now are you? You are moving them up, down, left and right, pressing and swiping all over the screen. Does doing those action strain your thumbs too? Sometimes the top two rows extend to the middle of the screen for most phones, unless you stick with the bottom of the keyboard when texting.

Angeljuice3628d ago (Edited 3628d ago )

@Gangsta_red

Do you play videogames at all?

All first person games have you using both sticks simultaneously. That is a huge number of games (first person shooters are probably the biggest genre of all). I can't believe you said "Not too many (if any)" games use both sticks. Try thinking before making statements.

The only real reason Microsoft made the sticks offset was to avoid copywrite issues.

Skankinruby3628d ago

??? I see I touched a nerve there. Most games out today use both joysticks at once and not having symmetry with your hands is insanely awkward. I didn't insult people who prefer the Xbox controller did I, so how about you swap out that maxi and chill out. I played through gears of war 1 and 2 on my brothers 360 and had to spend 10 minutes mentally adapting every time I played. Everyone's entitled to their opinion as you are arrogantly sharing and imo the joystick layout Xbox has is garbage.

gangsta_red3628d ago (Edited 3628d ago )

@angeljuice

What you said...

"I can't believe you said "Not too many (if any)" games use both sticks. Try thinking before making statements."

What i really said...

"Not too many (IF ANY) games require you to 'rest' both thumbs on both joysticks"

You seem to have left out the word 'rest'..you should really try reading next time before you make statements.

Edit:

By all means Skankinruby share your opinion. But don't get all hurt when people don't agree with the square wheeled wagon you're trying to push.

Goldby3628d ago

@gangsta

Really. You are saying that the word rest is the main point you were trying to. Say.

Well even less, if any aaks the player the rest their finger on the face buttons. 9/10 times your fingers are on the joysti ks either lookingor moving the camera and shifts to the face buttons when an action is required.

Let see what word uuse next

yeahright23628d ago

" Unless you have infant hands "
Trump 2016!

gangsta_red3628d ago

"Trump 2016!"

Screwed either way!

@Golby

Great, you and I both proved that you are constantly using your fingers and thumbs independently from one another and at different times for different actions. The strain and muscle pulls you must feel because your thumbs aren't symmetrical with each other must be taxing, especially when you go from the right joystick to the face buttons or playing third person action games when your left thumb is on the left joystick and your right thumb is pressing buttons.

Goldby3627d ago (Edited 3625d ago )

@Gansta, i guess yours must be just as tiring because the last time i checked the right joystick was in the same place on both controllers.

i get that you are trying to make a funny about all this, but it isn't working very well on your behalf.

so again, you are having to use just as much effort as any playstation user when you want to make the character jump because you have to take your fingers off the right joystick that you use for looking around or aiming. making your points, as sarcastic as they may be, completely moot

@Gangsta

***Another point is that when playing third person or other types of games on the DS4 that require you to press the face buttons your thumbs do become asymmetrical. Do these people get the same strain or awkward feeling they would have when playing?***

Same could be said about the Xbox Controllers, that when you are playing third person games you right thumb is asymentrical when you are lokoing or aiming.

none the less this is a useless debate, we all have our preferences. mine is with DS$ yours seems to be some demonic controller lifted from the hands of trump himself;)

Christopher3627d ago (Edited 3627d ago )

***Unless you only play games that require both thumbs always be on the right and left analog stick. ***

That is 99% of the games out there... I think the only thing I can really think of is something like a TellTale game. Otherwise...

And, I don't see the benefit of the buttons being aligned. You can't make fun of people for 'equilibrium' issues and then promote the buttons being across from a thumbstick as a bonus. It's either not an issue that they're not aligned or it's a bonus for them being aligned to something else you would use.

***Not too many (IF ANY) games require you to 'rest' both thumbs on both joysticks. ***

What? Most games I play, as well as the most played games on consoles, actually require this at almost all times. Especially FPS games. But even third-person games utilize this type of design. I don't get your statement here.

Edit: I don't get what you mean by "rest". If you're playing a game, your hands aren't "resting"... You seem to draw some sort of difference between 'resting' and 'playing' but who cares about resting when we're talking about playing?

gangsta_red3627d ago

@Christopher

That's just it, it's such a non issue that it's hilarious to even keep talking about it.

Both controllers for both consoles have your thumbs in constant motion and in different positions moving independent from one another when playing. So it's funny to read how some gamers are having a hard time or it's 'insanely awkward' on the xbox controller when the position of the right stick is only a few cm away from the position on the DS4. If your thumb is unable to rest a few cm away then that is some serious health issues right there.

Another point is that when playing third person or other types of games on the DS4 that require you to press the face buttons your thumbs do become asymmetrical. Do these people get the same strain or awkward feeling they would have when playing?

Take-Two CEO Once Again Side Steps Grand Theft Auto 6 Price Point

Strauss Zelnick says price of GTA 6 is being carefully considered and that Rockstar is focused on "making the most spectacular piece of entertainment on Earth."

Kuma74d ago

If GTA 6 abandons everything that made GTA 5 great, it will crash and burn right out of the gate. GTA 5 was funny and not at all PC. My worry is that they will cave to the PC crowd and ruin the vibes.

They got freaking BBLs twerking on the top of trucks for the gram, the freaking Flordia joker, and dude running down the stree in their undies and you are worried about it being 'too PC'? Xbox boss: Memory crisis could impact next-gen hardware pricing

Xbox boss Asha Sharma has discussed how component shortages will impact the company's plans for Project Helix.

Read Full Story >>
gamedeveloper.com
Eonjay75d ago

When does this end? Its killing everyone. Consoles and PC. And for what? AI? The benefits of AI are completely outweighed by the negatives. And the government should have never allowed one company to buy up all the RAM.

Lexreborn275d ago

This kind of proves this is an after thought product, most products like this are in r&d 5 years before they start mass producing. So they typically have the cost of components and things worked out long before assembly starts.

This is an assumption still, but I wouldn’t be surprised if project helix is similar to Scalebound,perfect dark and sod3. They had an idea but no actual execution other than concept stage. Being impacted by the ram shortage likely would also put this device 3-4 years out.

I’m not even sure MS has that endurance with Xbox yet

Fishy Fingers75d ago (Edited 75d ago )

I mean.... what?

We're at a point that Samsung wont even provide their own phone department ram because they can sell it at higher prices to 3rd parties (AI). Its more profitable to sell the ram than make their own devices with it.

You think because R&D starts 5 years ago the 3rd party component manufacturers will honour that price? They'll sell it to whomever is paying the most today, not some gentlemens agreement they made years ago. AI farms will buy more volume at higher prices than any console manufacturer will. It'll be the same for Playstation.

Lexreborn275d ago

Contractual agreements are not the same as “gentlemen” agreements. If you think that they work with their distributors a month before production then their entire business model is trash. They work with companies like nvidia constantly for building the graphics cards they need. They work with companies that build motherboards years in advance. This is what proper business planning does.

They are not buying components on a whim like a consumer. So again, considering the ram isn’t a singular module and is integrated into the motherboard I highly doubt they wouldn’t have a final schematic that they are supposed to be building around.

If they are delaying production another 3 years then it’s obvious again this is an after though project and is just trying to be responsive to their bad execution they had the last 14 years.

It also isn’t far fetched to use their failure to produce first party titles the last 7 years including the highly anticipated games I mentioned all being cancelled. That they would continue to you know… lie

Sitdown75d ago

You don't really know how this works huh?

Profchaos75d ago (Edited 75d ago )

Helix is going to be stupidly expensive

Instead of leaning into smarter upscaling techniques they're brute forcing hardware that will cost them dearly and it remains to be seen if it's genuinely going to provide a meaningful differential

I know in the oc.doace people like to brag about not using frame gen or dlss to get to high on a game but for the majority of players they happily use those technologies without a second thought

That's going to be ps6 vs Helix

Eonjay75d ago

Yeah with FSR 5 they should be able to offer a much cheaper version of Helix.

Eonjay75d ago

While this does seem to be the case, I am encouraged by the statement from Microsoft about wanting to provide affordable options. If this means a Series S style Helix, at least there will be something affordable being offered.

XBManiac74d ago

Series S is what has killed Xbox Series so... Will they dare?

blacktiger75d ago

It's called systematic inflationary. Yes we get it Microsoft, keep raising in the name ofall kinds of stuffs

pwnmaster300075d ago

Honestly if there was thing I learned from this generation is that new consoles arnt day one anymore.
I can wait 1-3 years.

DarXyde75d ago

Another important lesson from this generation: while Nintendo showed us that prices don't necessarily need to ever drop, we've now learned that waiting 1-3 years does carry some risk that prices increase. This generation is just bizarre in all the wrong ways.

LucasRuinedChildhood75d ago (Edited 75d ago )

The factors are largely external. Covid and Russia-Ukraine war causing inflation led to the first price increase in 2022.

Then we get Trump's tariffs increasing hardware prices, AI boom causing a RAM crisis, war on Iran causing a worldwide fuel crisis which impacts the cost of everything.

Gaming doesn't exist in a vacuum. The last few years have been a shitshow and lot of it was definitely avoidable.

DarXyde75d ago

LucasRuinedChildhood,

For sure. No disagreement on the external factors doing a lot of this. Where I have to gently push back however is on two fronts:

1. The pandemic definitely caused some issues: asynchronous development was a big issue and really complicated timelines and affected game quality. At the same time, when it comes to price hikes, it's really difficult to know what was genuine necessity and what was taking consumers for a ride. The pandemic brought about "stag-flation" which was increasing prices and stagnant wages, which was a problem caused by supply chain constraints. There was also "Greed-flation", where companies that were slightly affected or had no issues took advantage of the situation and squeezed everyone citing supply chain issues when there were none.

2. It's definitely true that the tariffs, AI boom, and RAM crisis were all things enabled by tech broligarchs throwing money at this caricature of a world leader, one of them being Satya Nadella. I don't think Sony and Nintendo have contributed much to this problem if at all, but Microsoft's Nadella I feel was instrumental in causing every one of those issues. Microsoft as a company contributed to both candidates (though they gave Harris 4x as much if I recall), but Nadella was all in on letting AI run wild. He paid for unregulated AI, and got a war that's not a war (even though Trump called it that at least five times on television) that screwed up helium access. So for me, I feel that one of the players in the gaming industry is a key architect of these issues, and for that reason I struggle a bit to think of it as "external".
