Does Mankind Divided Need To Be More Deus Ex?

Deus Ex Mankind Divided is a game many are hoping will be the next
generation in narrative progressing first person RPG awesomeness. The only
issue is that the series has slowly deviated from its original concept.
Should it look back on itself to improve?

Mass Effect tried this, and it ended up not making much difference because the choices still put us right back into the same story arc. If the choices altered the story in any meaningful ways, by the time we get to the third game there would have to be at least a few dozen main story arcs that were vastly different. I would think that something on that scale would be nearly impossible with today's programming.

curtis923593d ago

Exactly. What might seem like a simple 3 different endings could end up potentially being 100+ endings by the end of the third game if you allowed each ending to branch out, it would be absurd. The choices, by that very nature, have to be pretty limited, unfortunately.

TheCommentator3593d ago

I could imagine a time when NPC's are all sentient, use speech synthesis (instead of voice actors) to generate real-time conversations, and everything in an environment is physics-based like the real world. At that point, programmers could spend their time programming in each of the story arcs and their watercooler moments to create a close approximation of real choice and consequence. When will any of this be a reality though, 25 to 50 years maybe?

@TheCommentator

I imagine a game in which real gamers decide something instead of NPCs, yes it'll be an MMO sort of thing, but just imagine, someone comes to you to for a favour, you reject him and later you come to know that you are in big trouble because he wanted to take revenge.

@TheCommentator

There's a "leak" of what half-life 3 will be like and it sounds very similar to what you're saying. Very organic and everything plays out in real time and dialog is constructed based on what's happening. Maybe be totally fake but I love the concept of that.

TheCommentator3593d ago

@The Optimist

That's what I was alluding to; real people making real choices. The things in my post, however, preclude ones' ability to do as you suggest and are requirements of true decision making in video games. Characters would have to be like Siri, but talk more natural in order not to break the immersion of the experience.

The only things I didn't like about Human Revolution were the boss battles, the opening section of the game where shooting your way out is your only option, and the "press the button" ending. Sort those out, add some more lore and intrigue, (connecting it with the original Deus Ex) and they just might have a near perfect game.

Oh, and bring back the Men in Black and dragon sword from the first game. That would be beyond epic. :D

Interesting. I thought Mankind Divided had some of the best boss fights of any game in a very long time.

They were all pretty unique.

KwietStorm_BLM3593d ago

You mean Human Revolution? But..You're serious? That's the first time I've seen anyone say that. The boss fights were the only real downside of the game. They were pretty lackluster, and they know this. That's why it was address.

starchild3593d ago

I agree the boss battles weren't great, but, as is often the case, people exaggerate how "bad" they are. I'm sure they will have improved the boss battles for Mankind Divided in any case.

LordMaim3593d ago

It is entirely possible to go through the first section of the game without killing anyone. And the Director's Cut version of DXHR redesigns all of the boss encounters, and also makes it possible to stealth through all of the boss battles as well.

The "Push the button" endings were just dumb in general, but by that point most of the story was resolved anyhow.

Sciurus_vulgaris3593d ago

I'm currently playing Human Revolution Director's Cut via backwards compatibility on XB1. I think the game is decent, but the game lacks polish in my opinion, stealth and shooting is clunky. Also Human Revolution for a 2011 release, looks very sub-par, it often looks like a 360 launch game. I feel like I'm mainly playing through the game because of it's story, rather than the actual gameplay.

LordMaim3593d ago

I think you need to go back and play a 360 launch game, and recalibrate your baseline.

Sciurus_vulgaris3593d ago

what are you talking about, I've played dozens of 360 and PS3 games. Mass Effect 2 game out in 2010 and looks far better than Deus EX Revolution.I played the Witcher 2 enhanced edition on 360 (a 2011 game like Human Revolution) and it looked far better than Human Revolution also.

KwietStorm_BLM3593d ago (Edited 3593d ago )

Well to each his own. HR deserved way more credit than it got when it released, despite the acclaim it did. With so many remasters and sequels for the sake of sequels, they put out a project that was true to the original, even though it's been years since it first released.

Christopher3592d ago

Not much to do here but disagree with you. The stealth mechanics are good. The shooting is fine for an RPG not aimed at being a shooter.

Sciurus_vulgaris3592d ago

I'm currently enjoying the game; I have made it to the Montreal missions. However, I stick by my statements on the game's graphical and mechanical short comings (in my opinion).

Christopher3592d ago (Edited 3592d ago )

I think of it like ME1 versus ME2. ME1 was more an RPG than it was anything else. Deus Ex is the same for me. The components from other genres were melded in fine and didn't detract from it being an RPG or make it into another genre.

For some, if it has shooting, it has to feel like a shooter. I disagree. It needs to feel first and foremost like an RPG, and the game did that without having poor stealth or shooting gameplay that also relied on RPG elements.

Yui_Suzumiya3593d ago

Human Revolution is on my all time favorite list so I have total faith that Mankind Divided will deliver on all fronts.

Kingdomcome2473593d ago

Same here, brother. One of my top ten for sure. I've said this a lot, but I truly believe it. I believe that Mankind Divided will be one of this gen's defining games. Right up there with the likes of UC4, and The Witcher 3, etc...

rynodigital3593d ago

Boss battles aside, DRHR was one of the few games I was able to play through multiple times. I just loved the aesthetic of the game, the presentation, music, all really felt so unique. I have no doubts that the sequel will be enjoyable. Side note, I never got to play the Directora Cut, but just how different were the boss fights in that version?
