Xbox One S is not necessary

While the Xbox One S looks like a great addition to the Xbox console family, it isn't necessary.

I was going to wait until scorpio but I'm really keen on Forza horizon 3, Recore and Gears 4. I think with a 4k player and 4k upscaling, it is a perfect addition for my gaming room until scorpio drops.

UltimateMaster3591d ago (Edited 3591d ago )

Xbox One S is good for people who game casually and owns a 4k HDR TV that wants to watch 4k Blu-ray HDR Movies.
It is cheaper than the Samsung 4k Blu-ray player, so even non-gamer might want to own it.
Xbox One S support HDR 10 which is supported by Samsung and Sony TVs.
It does not support Dolby HDR which is used in LG TVs.
So if you own a LG TV the Xbox One S may not be the 4k Blu-ray player you are looking for.

3591d ago
noksucow733591d ago

Samsung here, which supports HDR (I made sure to check before purchase). My main reason for wanting the S is due to the low price of the UHD player. My opinion it's a smart move on MS. Sony did it with dvd in ps2 and bluray in ps3.

mozzie3591d ago

not true. dolby vision requires licensed dolby hardware while HDR10 does not. LG TVs are compatible with both HDR10 and dolby vision. games like forza horizon 3 and gears 4 will be HDR10 and also most likely 4k blurays will be HDR10 as it will be compatible with every TV brand. Dolby Vision will most likely used by some streaming services..

FrankieSab3591d ago

Lg do both, when you can do Dolby Vision it's easy to do HDR10 via Software.

deadfrag3591d ago

LG Tvs support both Dolby Vision and HDR 10 actually LG is right now the only tv maker that uses a 10bit panel to display the best HDR quality.

Fatal-Aim3591d ago

Ironic...

http://www.legitreviews.com...

Now the main talk of the system is how great the drive is.

rainslacker3590d ago (Edited 3590d ago )

HDR12(Dolby HDR) can display HDR10. Dolby HDR just has additional meta-information and pixel depth than the more open HDR10 standard. Not sure with LG, but some TV's may require an update to enable a form of backwards compatibility for the spec which is likely to become the standard, and ultimately, both formats will likely be supported by the non broadcast 4K media.

If one wants that HDR12 HDR capability in their media player, then yeah, look elsewhere. No way to flash for Dolby HDR as it's a hardware solution. If X1S doesn't have the hardware on release, don't expect it to come later. Same reason we can't just get a flash to make our current PS4's and X1's into HDR UHD players, because they lack the proper HDCP2.2 control chip, although the rest of the hardware is more than capable.

Also, by this holiday, 4K players will probably cost the same or less than the X1S. There are quite a few coming to market which will drive the price down, since right now the price is only high so the few companies that have an option can gouge the customer. MS maybe has 2-3 months where it will be the cheapest option for a UHD player....assuming Sony doesn't release a slim soon at the same price(although they'll probably price it a bit higher going by current PS4/X1 price differentials. If Sony prices it the same, then well...they are much more recognized for their media players than MS is, and the PS3 was one of the best standard Blu-Ray players for a long time, and in some ways still is if you don't need the 4K upscaling, and that's going to make it harder for MS to capitalize on the UHD/HDR market the way Sony has done with other techs in the past.

Just get a good PC and you can even forget about Scorpio.

ARESWARLORD3591d ago

I have an amazing gaming PC but I also have a PS4 Xbox One and Wii U as well as a Sega Dreamcast and Sega Genesis it's good to have both first person shooters are definitely better on consoles for guys that don't like keyboard and mouse

conanlifts3590d ago

Unless your friends only own an xbox. As it currently stands you can't use multiplayer in competitive mode from pc to xbox. So if your friends all game on xbox you still need an xbox.

EpicSandwich3590d ago

Nah, I have a decent pc but I only game on it if i have to. I primarily game on ps4 but I'm getting the Slim and scorpio to join my xbox friends online. Scorpio is a no brainer that thing is a beast.

Notellin3590d ago

Yeah journalists need to let the consumer be the judge of what is or isn't necessary. I for one am buying a Xbox one S and couldn't be more excited.

Hell I'll buy a Scorpio and Neo when that time comes. I think all these options make this generation a fantastic time to jump into video games.

crazychris41243592d ago

These are some lame reasons. First of all they said from day 1 it wont and cant do native 4k gaming. It can do 4k video and will be the cheapest 4k blu ray player when it releases next month, it also does HDR. 2nd any reduction in size and putting the power supply inside is a welcome change. 3rd storage is cheap but buying a console that already has a ton of storage saves you time from having to add more.

Aenea3591d ago

"and will be the cheapest 4k blu ray player when it releases next month"

It will be from December, not next month. The cheapest model, the 500GB one, is not releasing in August, which to me is a huge missed opportunity for MS.

Kribwalker3590d ago

I was told by my local ebgames (GameStop in Canada) that August 30th the other slim models come out

mark_parch3591d ago (Edited 3591d ago )

totally agree. its basically just replacing the xbox one and its practically the same price no different from last gen when microsoft and sony released new slimer models. makes me laugh when people try and put a negative spin on stuff like this lol

rainslacker3590d ago (Edited 3590d ago )

"First of all they said from day 1 it wont and cant do native 4k gaming"

So, if one wants a 4K gaming machine, this console isn't for them.

" It can do 4k video "

So can the current X1 and PS4. Current models can't output HDR though.

"will be the cheapest 4k blu ray player when it releases next month"

Do you believe being the cheapest is still going to get people to buy it in droves? It's still a $300(base) media player. Standard one now is $400, and will likely drop very soon as more competition comes to the market. Even Sony wouldn't likely win anything in sales this go around, because in the past, the difference in price between a stand alone player, and their consoles was pretty significant. Usually $200, with the PS3 being $300-400 difference in prices for the technologies they were bringing to market.

BTW, the samsung UHD is getting unofficial price drops for a new version which is coming out soon, and Phillps just released one at $400 last month which is expected to get it's own price drop within the next 2-3 months. Sony is also releasing one I think next month, although I'm not sure the price. PS4 Slim, although we don't have a release date, is likely to support it as well, and be priced competitively. Just some things to keep in mind that HDR/UHD isn't likely to be a driving force in console sales like Sony's has leveraged in the past.

"it also does HDR"

For gamers with 4K HDR TV's, this is probably the best feature that actually relates to games. For those players, being a UHD/HDR player will also make it a better purchase than a stand alone. Unfortunately, the market penetration for such TV's is extremely low, so probably won't be a factor on the majority of consumers.

Hopefully devs utilize this feature going forward. I don't think there are going to be many games which show this off when the system releases though, although I'd imagine some games have patches incoming, and some others already have it built in for when they release on the system. This might be something that MS should make clear before release. Games won't suddenly be HDR, as it requires profiles to be implemented on the rendering pipeline, and some devs aren't going to go back and do the work for that on older games.

"2nd any reduction in size"

Mostly inconsequential in getting people to decide on a console, however, there are segments which prefer better looking smaller consoles, or simply upgrade because they want to. Biggest thing here is the price reduction that comes with slims, but with the X1S, there isn't an actual price reduction, so hard to say how it will play out.

"and putting the power supply inside is a welcome change"

Welcome, but who cares beyond the trolls?

"3rd storage is cheap but buying a console that already has a ton of storage saves you time from having to add more"

That's a benefit, I doubt it's a major consideration to most people. They're more likely to look at the bundled games and price over the actual hard drive size....especially since people make such a big deal about how easy it is to change out the hard drives, or in the case of Xbox, they can just get a external one when they see fit, and save a bit of money now.

Fullmetalevolust3592d ago (Edited 3592d ago )

The software will be compatible between the two iterations, same thing with the Neo (it seems, all speculations), so those who can't afford it at launch will catch on later. Not that I am going a Scorpio or a Neo anytime soon. I don't even have an xbox one yet.

mark_parch3591d ago

if you don't have an xbox one or gaming pc the xbox one s is perfect for you, cheap and just in time for the holiday line up

Kingthrash3603591d ago

It's not speculation it's been confirmed by sony as a side by side ps4 console.

opinionated3591d ago (Edited 3591d ago )

They are getting a head start on the UHD bluray business. They will sell many many units because of that. You don't need an Xbox for a UHD player but it is your cheapest option. It also plays games, certain ones in HDR no less. It might not be "necessary" for a person looking at exclusives or an Xbox one standard owner but it was necessary for Microsoft to stay competitive. I think the move was a well played one.

nitus103591d ago

Ah! you mentioned High Dynamic Range (HDR) video. Currently, there is a format war between HDR10 and Dolby HDR although HDR10 is supported for 4K Bluray players while Dolby HDR is not.

If you are in the market for a 4K display (includes monitors) then make sure it supports both HDR types or at least the one you hope will win. See the following for more information: http://hometheaterreview.co...

For HDR video to be fully supported you will need a player that will support HDMI 2.0 or higher plus cable and a 4K TV/monitor that will support HDR10. It must be noted that some displays support both HDR formats.

noksucow733591d ago

Indeed. I was very close to buying a LG 65in 4k led, then I read that it didn't support HDR, so I went with Samsung. Hopefully the later models will support both

opinionated3591d ago

Wow that sucks. I never saw HDR10 or Dolby HDR when I shopped for my 4K. It just says HDR, should I just assume it supports both? I don't see either in the docs.

nitus103590d ago (Edited 3590d ago )

@opinionated

Even if you look at the URL I provided, check the web on the model you are interested in as to which HDR it supports. As I have pointed out current LG models will support both but it is better to double check.

Asking the sales rep in a store is probably not the best solution although some actually do know the product that they are selling.

Unfortunately, if you already have a UHD TV and it does not support HDR10 then getting a 4K Bluray player is IMHO a waste of money since you will only see a resolution improvement which may be enough to justify the purchase although it will still play standard HD Bluray movies. I think some streaming services (check with my URL and do your own checks) do support Dolby Vision HDR.

rainslacker3590d ago (Edited 3590d ago )

Next month, it'll be priced the same MSRP as the Samsung model currently available, or more if Samsung maintains the unofficial discounted price they're selling it for now($369). Plus MS has a bundle which is more expensive than the Samsung option coming in October. More compeition is incoming, and Samsung also has a new model coming out. Phillips player is also expected to get a price drop soon.

Because of this, the $300 X1S model, which comes out later than the $400 one(not sure if a release date has been given for the $300 one), may still not be the cheapest option. It will be a competitively priced option, with the added value of being a game system though, but the benefits Sony has seen from this sales model in their prior gens systems isn't going to have the same effect going into UHD/HDR as those generations saw price differences of $200-400 relative to stand alones.. For the $400 model, it may actually be a more expensive option considering where Samsung is at.

Edit @ your HDR question below.

If it says just HDR then it's HDR10. The Dolby Logo would be readily apparent for a TV that offers it, as it's a licensed tech, which comes with it's own logo. Dolby HDR can run HDR10 content though, but on an HDR10 display, you may lose a bit of the quality, although reports tend to vary on how significant it is, and a lot of it does depend on the enconding of the content. HDR10 should be present in all media going forward, and DHDR will likely be offered in many UHD Blu-rays, and is available as an option on some 4K content providers now. For the most part, HDR10 will always be available, whereas DHDR is likely to only be available some places, but if you get a DHDR TV now, then you'll be set for both until they come up with some new format to compel consumers to upgrade.

If you get something with DHDR, then some models may require an update to support HDR10, so might want to verify that that update is available for a specific TV, or is already applied. Some current ones out in stores may not have an update, but most expect it will come for all DHDR TV's that can be upgraded if it's not already available.

We Are Xbox

Dear team,

Xbox has always been different.

We started with a simple idea. Games should bring people together through shared experiences. That led to the first Xbox in 2001, Xbox Live in 2002, and new ways to connect, from friends lists and achievements to parties and play across devices. Today, Xbox reaches over 500 million players around the world, with some of the most important franchises in entertainment.

If they go back to exclusive games it at least shows that they are finally getting it. They would be turning down immediate money for something that will potentially workout in the long term.

Only issue is they've already opened Pandora's box. A lot of their base has moved to PC or jumped to PS. So will be a long road to get back on track.

We have been saying this from day one exclusives are a must if you are going to be selling hardware look at Nintendo and Sony before Jim Ryan. That's the proven formula. You had some that were deluded and blinded by loyalty accepting that multiplat was the future and that MS was merely getting ahead of where the industry was headed, but at least they can finally see the light and agree with what everyone has been saying for a decade+

pwnmaster300024d ago

True, blame it on the rabid fanboys. MS can do no wrong and spinner this multiplatform move. While the actual fans moved on.

I feel like with the new Xbox coming they are hoping to bring back those old fans and then if it goes well. Bring back exclusives.

If the new console is performing like series x and one. Naw they staying multiplatform.

darthv7223d ago

Actual fans dont move on... they can add to their hobby while waiting for the next new release. If you believe what you typed then I guess PS fans moved on too.... you know, since its been a Sahara for 1st party games this gen.

S2Killinit23d ago

The fans didn’t tell them to go multilat. MS was forced to after the 82 billion they spent to destroy gaming. Then, while xbox fans cheered, MS realized they can’t justify the price tag by selling through xbox only, so they went multiplat and in the process began to downplay console gaming.

24d ago Replies(4)
CrashMania24d ago

I think it's too late, xbox sales were diving even before ABK, they got even worse since then even long before the full multiplatform push. I'd be surprised if they even went back to timed exclusivity at this point, Helix is basically a PC and is going to be expensive, they already struggle to sell cheaper xbox consoles, it will be low volume and they'll have a very small 'console' base to sell to, which has already been conditioned to just play via gamepass anyway.

S2Killinit23d ago

They will do what they always do, they will promise the world at the beginning of next GEN and then failed to deliver all generation long. But there will always be some gamers who will buy into their promises.

ocelot0723d ago

Absolutely agree, Do people genuinely believe Microsoft are now going to go. Hang on how's about we go back to 2020. Then GP was stagnating, Games sold where awful because of GP. Outsold by Playstation by a landslide.

They have sold 5m of Forza I believe on PS5. Spite it being a old game. I think Starfield is going to sell well in the end. Halo is deffinetly going to sell well as is Fable and Forza Horizon 6.

I think at best (for Xbox fans). Single player titles like Clockwork will have a timed exclusivity. Multiplayer centric games like Forza, E Day will release day and date on all platforms.

Or all games will release on all platforms day and date. But maybe Xbox and Windows Store copies will have exclusive bonuses. Or may even get timed exclusive dlc like Fallout and Elder Scrolls and COD use to do.

I think they will treat Xbox players like the premium customers or at least act the way. But will serve just the Playstation and Switch 2 customers as well.

Neonridr23d ago

I don't see them removing PC from the equation. Considering MS has a heavy enough investment in the PC market, it would be foolish to abandon them. I could see them taking away games from PlayStation or ensuring they are timed exclusives at the very least. Say what you will but if Call of Duty ends up becoming a timed exclusive to Xbox machines, that would hurt PlayStation, don't pretend like those games don't sell millions.

Outside_ofthe_Box23d ago

They would lose out on a lot of CoD sales tho. Doesn't PS make up most of the sales?

Neonridr23d ago

@Outside - possibly, but it might push people to want Xbox hardware so they can play with their buddies day one.

Who knows.

S2Killinit23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

it would but remember doing that can splinter the COD fan base and in the process damage the call of duty brand which is probably the only franchise in that $82 billion purchase that in anyway gets even close to delivering what Microsoft thought they bought. If Microsoft fudges around too much with the COD franchise, you might even see a competitor franchise show up on the scene and that would be a catastrophe after the huge debt that Microsoft put itself into with the ABK purchase.

But Its almost guaranteed that Microsoft will want to do something drastic at the beginning of the next generation as they always do. We will see.

Pyrofire9523d ago

Their lifeline of solely the Xbox consoles is dry. Good-Great games on a 1st party scale can't be made at a loss so willingly - sent to the Xbox to only sell limited copies.
They invested billions scooping up studios and need to start making returns.
Sucks that nearly every company is publicly traded and have to be so shareholder biased but that's how it is.
Their words are strong but it'll take time to see what their actions accomplish. Lowering the cost of Game Pass and taking CoD off of it was a good clear start.

darthv7223d ago

More like, allot of their base just played game pass. So now they need to encourage them to start buying again.

S2Killinit23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

A lot of their base left for greener (bluer?) pastures.

--Onilink--23d ago

What exactly is the long term goal with exclusives though?

Because for the most part, the hardware side of things has never been the most profitable, even sometimes being subsidized for a period before breaking even. And that’s before the hardware component nightmare we currently live in.

The whole point of exclusives was to get more people to buy your console in order to have a bigger install base, which meant even bigger software sales.

But if their ports to PS5 are selling (for the most part it seems) quite well, then other than negating the cut Sony takes there, unless you are REALLY increasing your software sales on your own console, it probably doesn’t make that much of a difference?

Honestly I don’t even understand Sony’s decision to scale back on it for PC unless they weren’t even recouping the port expenses. They released ports when the hardware sales never really dropped, and now that all consoles will undoubtedly take a noticeable drop in sales due to the ridiculous prices, that’s when they decide they don’t want to sell to a larger install base to more easily recoup dev costs… it’s just weird

Outside_ofthe_Box23d ago (Edited 23d ago )

I agree. I mean once they went multiplat, in theory there should be no going back especially when you have games that have sold really well on other platforms.

Microsoft are the ones that announced that they are reevaluating. So I'm just guessing on what their end goal is. Right now Xbox as a hardware is not a must buy for anyone but fans of the brand because their games can be played elsewhere. Going exclusive would solve this, but you lose out on a ton of money instantly which has always been what the company does not want to do so not really sure what their "reevaluating exclusives" means unless they are pulling a Phil Spencer and are just saying what people want to hear and will continue to do what they are currently doing.

darthv7223d ago

Their ports to PS5 are selling because Sony's output has been so dry... the fans are thirsty, and MS is the oasis.

SIdepocket23d ago

Unfortunately, the studios they buy wither under their leadership.

mcstorm23d ago

Microsoft still has a name with Xbox the issue is the casual games are not looking at the console because its not the same console their friends have. Look at that poll on how many users upgraded from xbox 365 to one and then the X. Part of Microsoft's downfall was thinking that the Wii was the market they had to be in when really it was the core market. If you get the core gamers you then get the market to. As I posted a few minuets ago on another post Microsoft putting exclusives on PS this gen could bold well if they hit next gen with all our games are staying exclusive from this new gen. They will then get gamers wanting Halo, Forza Gears but this is also where Microsoft fell over with the xbox one and X in terms of they did not have may quality 1st party games affter they fell into the Gears, Forza and Halo cycle. If they can get some old IPs back to bring back the old core gamers as well as fresh ips to bring in new gamers things could improve next gen. But as I said in my last post its all if buts and maybes at the moment. No one knows if the next home consoles will be to expensive that people move to pc as we are now seeing or look at the stem deck as a cheepier alternitive.

DarXyde23d ago

"Only issue is they've already opened Pandora's box."

That's very optimistic. It's not the only issue, far from it. There is a serious rupture between Microsoft generally and the public caused by their weird Game Pass price fluctuations, taking down physical game space in stores, and being the first to go nuts on hardware price hikes that they themselves played a big part in.

They're also charging beyond a premium for Helix which is just vile at a time when the economy is in shambles.

The company itself is really not doing itself any favors with the approach they're taking Windows. Even France is looking to ditch Windows in favor of Linux.

But the most offensive thing is this AI push. They're doubling, tripling, and quadrupling down on the very technology they're using to replace a considerable proportion of their workforce... And the slap in the face is how they bake copilot into everything when nobody likes it—they couldn't even make Bing stick, so why on earth are they trying so hard? You know it's bad when people would rather use ChatGPT than Copilot which is killing their OS. But aside from their snatching up of farmland to build data centers (and reduce the agriculture capacity of whichever country allows them to build them), they made an AI-generated gamer gurl that loves AI the head of Xbox.

Even if we grant them the full benefit of the doubt, it hardly matters what Xbox wants to do if Nadella says no, and that includes exclusive games. Microsoft's relationship with Xbox is the opposite of Sony's relationship with PlayStation—Microsoft pulls the reins of Xbox, but Sony damn near went under for the PS3.

Tanktopmaster9223d ago (Edited 23d ago )

“If they go back to exclusive games it at least shows that they are finally getting it.”

Great strategy, especially after Forza selling 5 million on PlayStation and sea of thieves selling at least another million (2 million) for example. In March 2026, Xbox consoles sales ratio vs PS was 10:1.

In addition to that, with Gamepass, which unequivocally cuts out chunks of sales (Cannibalizing revenue from 1st month sales especially).

I’m sure going exclusive again after releasing everything on Ps5 is going to work out great for business.

Wonder how much money was lost on perfect dark, hellbalde 2, 300 million lost revenue

The fact is this has been PlayStation's most profitable generation and they are making loads of money and selling plenty of consoles and games. While MS won't give you any sales figures or profit numbers for Xbox, says it all really.

Fishy Fingers24d ago

It isnt. But I dont think they mean in 'games', rather, footprint.

They own the OS but as far as gaming is concerned, Steam dominate. I imagine the VAST majority of people who use the Xbox app/launcher are PC gamepass subs. No ones buying their 3rd party PC games through Xbox PC.

badz14923d ago

and many gamers prefer SteamOS for gaming over Windows too. If only Valve would be more uncompromising to the anti-cheat makers that locked out non-windows players, more pc gamers would have moved onto SteamOS by now and not looking back to Windows. overall, Win11 is a terrible, bloated, unoptimized OS which is not what many people want

ocelot0723d ago

Agreed and I think that's where they are going to focus on more. I think cheaper games on Windows/Xbox store (MS IP) compared to Steam and Epic and maybe even compared to PSN store as well.
