Kojima: Metal Gear Solid wouldn't exist without PlayStation

The Metal Gear series was very nearly done and dusted as a 2D game by 1990, according to Hideo Kojima speaking at this year's Develop conference. That was until PS1 came along with its fancy polygons.

Been a fan of the series since the NES. I can see why he says that PS was what MGS needed because (other than Saturn) Nintendo didn't have the format capacity to hold the assets of the game. It had capable hardware but their choice of carts really would have limited it's scope and depth.

The game could have been done on Saturn as well but obviously things were different in regards to the potential sell through base. I can imagine kojima making a very good version on the Saturn as well. Other games like symphony of the night and snatcher are very well done on the planetary system.

What a great read that article was. From the man himself. This is a similar reason as to why i was always pro playstation from PS1. The PS1 created so many franchises that are still at the core of our gaming obsessions. If the PS1 wasn't release i might have left gaming behind too.

Majin-vegeta3594d ago

Hell we might still be blowing cartridges and block graphics 😂😂

xX-oldboy-Xx3592d ago

Very true, I actually had left gaming but came across EDGE magazine issue 11. That was the first time I saw the PlayStation. They showed Arc the lad, Philosoma and those 2 NAMCO classics - Ridge Racer and TEKKEN.

I payed nearly $1100 Aus, because I believed in what SONY was trying to do. Take gaming forward and not keep it in the realm of children or hardcore sims (PC).

I now have a 980ti water-cooled rig I built myself, but PlayStation will always be number one. Sony just seem to understand better than others what gamers want.

PS1 was a beast console, glad it helped bring one of the best games around to reality!

naruga3594d ago (Edited 3594d ago )

it literally was.... more than we thought it was... as Kuturagi wanted, it was a graphics powerhouse sold under 500 $....comparing games nowdays with its contemporary competitors (N64, Saturn, even Dreamcast) could anyone see that PSone games were far better in visuals and still standing well today...one perfect example is the many PS1 Capcom games which were ported almost without any change to Dreamcast

kevnb3594d ago (Edited 3594d ago )

the n64 had better graphics, but the storage limitations of the cartridge ended up hurting them at the time. Also for whatever reason framerates were always terrible on n64, I hated playing most games on it.

BrandanT3594d ago

The ps1 was weaker. At the time disc media was superior in terms of capacity, so it was obviously able to add more and have its prerendered cutscenes. But all the games ran a lot slower, and for that reason is why I think most ps1 games don't stand up well today. A lot of them are sluggish and experience frame rate drops.

MyDietEqualsGames3594d ago (Edited 3594d ago )

The look of n64 games were sharper, but PS1 games had more complexity to them. Effects and such. I own both and while ps1 games looked rough, I damned well preferred them. They expressed more graphically.

@Kevnb

N64 wouldn't exist if Playstation didn't back out of the Nintendo Playstation deal. So once again thank Sony :D lOl

Because of the format they were using an extremely long list of games would have never existed at that time if it wasn't for the PlayStation 1.

Might as well add Final Fantasy VII to that.

Chocoburger3594d ago

FF7 would have still been made on N64 (they even made FF6 character models on N64 as a tech demo) however, it would have been extremely different.

If you're saying it would be extremely different than a technically means Final Fantasy 7 as we know it would have never been made.

nobody ever said a game of the title known as "Final Fantasy 7" would have never been made but I'm referring to is what you KNOW it as Final Fantasy 7, not merely just the title.

So yes a final fantasy that preceded 6 would be called 7 If released on N64, that is not to say that Final Fantasy 7 the version you played on Playstation would have been the exact version on N64 but clearly you already know that.

Thanks to Sony we have the best game of all time :D

Imalwaysright3594d ago

To me, MGS3 is the best game of all time but MGS1 is one of the most important and influential games ever made. Can't wait to see what he will do now that he doesn't have creative restraints.

Around 13 minute mark is explained how PS1 CD format helped Kojima's vision become reality.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing17d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9217d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit17d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing17d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9217d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
