Is Backwards Compatibility the Way Forwards?

The word “backwards” doesn’t usually signify progress, but the past has value – just ask fans of Rockstar Games’ classic game Red Dead Redemption.

It is a great service and even free! No need to pay for a game that you already have, it really is very good.

I really love that the game perform better than on the original hardware and that will only get better as we move forward. MS is making lots of preparations for forward compatibility and given very clear signs of all Xbox games going forward is forward compatible.

This will benefit consoles nicely, especially with Play Anywhere and PC benefits of high graphical games being available to Xbox gamers.

Christopher3600d ago

No. It's just value added. That's all. Some have more value over others, but the way forward is always forward, not backwards.

Yukes3600d ago

Agreed. It's not a be all and end all, but it's certainly a bonus and a selling point.

Magnetar3600d ago

I think its more important nowadays, with people buying their games digitally. It was hard to let go of my 360 when I had over 60 arcade games on it, same with the PS3.

Christopher3600d ago (Edited 3600d ago )

I hold onto my consoles, but I admit being able to let go of one would be a nice surprise. But, I think as consoles approach more PC-esque designs, we'll see that become more the norm than ever. Even on XBO, it's not perfect since it's only titles that publishers allow and it requires a good amount of work on Microsoft's end to get it to work (as well as requires a download and can't be played straight from a disc, which goes against data caps in some regions).

I think we can all agree that having it is a benefit, but it shouldn't be a primary focus as we move forward.

I did'nt pay £350 to play last gen games, i can count the amount of times i have played on my PS3 on one hand since the PS4 launched, besides way to many new good games have been released on PS4 and PC to go back to old games.

Well I for one would play RDR if ps4 had backwards compatibility.
As it is I have 2 ps3 and 2 ps4, my wife and one of my sons has the ps3's, and my other older son and I have the ps4's.
Most of my games I buy digital and I have quite the digital ps3 library, I would be super stoked if I could add that on my ps4.

Backwards compatibility sure as hell isn't a bad thing, just ask any pc gamers, they always have their library no matter what gen we're in.

I just hope PS5 has physical BC. (at least for PS4 games) Especially since I think the age of very unique chips is over and they go with standard X86 instruction set. Got robbed plentifully while trading in some of my PS3 games (Since machine was stolen,.. and could not buy another one) So BC would be great.

BLow3600d ago

I pretty sure it will. The way things are looking for both companies, it seems that BC is high up on the priorities. Especially since both are x86 now and both doing mid gen upgrades or full upgrades to some of you who think that way.

Plus, since having AMD on board again will make that process much easier....

kneon3600d ago

From now on you can expect BC to come by default.

I can't see either Microsoft or Sony moving away from X86, and Intel's GPUs just aren't up to the task. So they will likely stick with AMD unless something drastically better comes along. That means BC is easy for all future consoles.

hduce3600d ago

I wouldn't say Intel's processors aren't up to task, I would say they are too expensive for console manufacturers.

kneon3600d ago

I said their GPU's, not their CPU. If you want an integrated GPU/CPU then Intel and AMD are the only real options, and AMD definitely has the advantage in GPUs. Nvidia isn't viable as they would have to go with something like ARM if they wanted to compete in this space, and I can't see that working out as they are unlikely to be able to provide enough benefits to outweigh the negatives.

ONESHOTV23600d ago

GPUs just aren't up to the task ? if you were talking about CPU then you are dead wrong

Eddoes3600d ago

Why? According to Sony fans it does not matter now. Why should Sony put a feature in the future NEO or PS5 that these so called fans claim they don't want right now?

marioJP873600d ago

Don't let the past hold you back because you must look to the future, right?

"Be creative 99% of the time" – Glen Schofield on how creativity can help fix AAA industry woes

The Callisto Protocol director thinks the solution involves the right people, the right timing, and perhaps a little bit of AI

I don't agree with that. I WISH I could agree with that. But buying habits and customer opinions prove otherwise

We've seen developers in the AAA space try new things and ideas. More often than not, the customers aren't willing to give things a chance, or not enough people buy into the project for it to grow.

Creativity works better in the indie space because the budgets, pressures, and expectations aren't the same.

Scissorman32d ago

it's a nice idea and it worked during the PS2/PS3-era when AAA didn't cost hundreds of millions of dollars. smaller budgets and shorter development time left room for more creativity and more risk. a game didn't need to sell 4 million+ copies to break even. things are different now.

This is the guy who bragged about crunching his staff and having them work through the night. Crunch culture has lost more talent and done more damage to the industry than any other factor. Screw him.
