Is It Time for PSone Classics on PS4?

Push Square: "This week saw the release of two PlayStation 2 titles on the PlayStation 4: The Warriors and Metal Slug Anthology. The two articles that we wrote confirming these releases went on to become among the most viewed on the website over the past seven days, proving that there's pent-up demand for these retro re-releases. But isn't it time that Sony started delving into the PSone library, too?"

It's always been time. I know people might think I'm over exaggerating but it's been disgusting how three years in and Sony hasn't gotten the ones released on the PS3 up on the PS4

I paid quite a bit for my collection of PS1 games on the PS3 and I wanted to see them on the PS4 straight away so I could continue where I left off but for some reason they've haven't been arsed to do anything.

I don't mind paying again if it's like FF7 where it looks a little better and has trophy support but I am not paying again for the ones I already bought.

By the time we get them all back onto the store the PS5 will be right around the corner and the whole thing will repeat it's self all over again. I mean hell us in the UK only got Spyro a year before the PS4 came out. Took an entire gen to release a PS1 classic.

Hoffmann3595d ago

God blessed me with the mighty ability to have enough space for two consoles at the TV. Thanks to this mighty ability I am not only able to play all the PS3 games whenever I want OR the PS4 ones, it also allowed me to enjoy not only the PS4 PlaystationPlus games but also the Playstation 3 ones.

God also blessed me with the motivation, the intelligence and the needed ..ressources to be able to use emulators for Playstation 1 and 2..and PSP games on this PC and enjoy the standard emulator features.

Never bought any of the PS Classics. And I thank God for that.

Retroman3595d ago (Edited 3595d ago )

It is much better to own physical copy than a emulator on said console.
And i thank God for blessing me never bought a emulation what can be physical in hand.

naruga3595d ago (Edited 3595d ago )

i m also huge supporter of physical ...and every game i own is physical on every gen of consoles...pS4 feels crippled without proper disc based PS1/PS2 BC (ok i know PS3 is difficult to emulate)

KentBenMei3595d ago

Sounds more like you're compensating for Sony's incompetence.

Name Last Name3595d ago

God also blessed you with enough money to buy your PS4 without selling your PS3...

rainslacker3595d ago (Edited 3595d ago )

My wallet blessed me with a full BC PS3, and my desire to play older games blessed me with the intelligence to not offload the system that would allow me to do that despite knowing the system I brought wouldn't allow me to do that. Weird concept to some I know....but that's what people do who want to play older games.....they keep the hardware to do it on, or seek out emulators elsewhere. At least that's how the retro community has done it for generations now. Seems new gamers don't understand the concept very well though.

PS1 classics, while great for some, mean little to me. I have such a huge collection of PS1 titles from retail releases, that i'd rather have that kind of BC than have to just go buy them digitally. The only digital one's I have are for some rarer, valuable ones I have sealed but still want to play, or were offered up through PS+ through the years. Guess an emulated solution like MS would be prudent for me, but it's not something I really need because I had the forethought to not offload the hardware that would allow me to play the games I want to play....and it seems most people didn't have that forethought, despite Sony being quite clear that BC wasn't available, that one's PS1 classics wouldn't be available, and that they had no intention of offering a BC solution....all very clearly and upfront long before the PS4 released. They were extremely transparent about it. Some still choose to offload their systems and now complain that they can't play their games.

I can understand why people would want to be able to play their PS1 digital games they purchased on PS3 on the PS4 though, as that is kind of a different matter. I'd hope Sony would have the good sense to not recharge people who already own those titles digitally should they start to do PS1 classics. PS2 had so few digital titles, so that's kind of a different issue, as no one actually owns them digitally, and they aren't just simple emulation wrappers, but do have some work put into them. Ultimately, it's up to the publisher if their game will be playable through emulation on the PS4 though.

All this is a big what if though. It all supposes that Sony will start offering the feature, and as of now, it's just speculation that they will or won't, and how they will handle people's already purchased PS1 classics should they have it. Foxtrots own comment makes a lot of this assumption....and again, Sony never promised it.

But I do think it's something worth asking for, and over on Sony forums, there are threads about it if you care to actually address the console maker directly(they do have reps there) instead of just complaining about it on forums.

freshslicepizza3595d ago

well one day sony will get their act together and digitize their entire library going back to the beginning which can be bought in their store. playstation now is another option to stream them.

Muzikguy3595d ago

I agree. I don't understand why this isn't even happening. What Sony should just do is give someone some money and then release an emulator that we can download and "boom" instant gratification. Or have us buy an emulator for a few bucks (but I still think it should be free for us since we still have to buy the games anyway)

rainslacker3595d ago (Edited 3595d ago )

Sony can't just allow all the PS1 titles to be emulated on the PS4. Same reason MS has to have publisher approval for BC, they don't have the rights to do so.

They can provide an emulator, free or otherwise, and could provide most of their published games through that emulator with no problem, but beyond that, it's up to the publishers.

That being said, I also don't know why Sony hasn't done it, and made a requirement for those publishers who are likely to approve the sale of their current digital PS1 offerings be that if someone brought it already, they can now get the PS4 version wrapper with the game. Seems like a wasted revenue stream to me, both for Sony, and the publishers. I can't imagine they don't already have a working emulator. We saw it running in Uncharted 4....yes, that was an emulator, not a newly coded creation.

tanukisuit3595d ago

Agreed, Foxtrot. I understand it can be difficult to do these things from a LICENSING point of view, but Sony REALLY needs to get their libraries all sorted out. They need to offer a firm price, but allow us to play those PS1 games regardless if we are playing on the Vita/PS3/PS4. They also need to drop more PSP games onto the store, for us Vita users, too.

Vipre773595d ago

Ditto what -Foxtrot said. Was it ever NOT time for PS1 games to be compatible? If the PSP and Vita can manage it, why not the PS4?

rainslacker3595d ago

PSP and Vita both have the PS1 hardware and PSP hardware(in Vita's case) available to run it natively without the use of emulation. There is no licensing restriction due to the code being emulated like we see on X1's BC that requires publisher approval. Publishers do have to agree that those games can be licensed to run on those specific devices though, as there are also restriction on which devices can download the content, and where it can be transferred to by the user....which is a different sort of license.

Vipre773594d ago

@rainslacker
Nonsense about the PSP and the Vita containing PS1 hardware. The closest thing here to that claim is only the PSP's CPU. PS1 contained a 32-bit MIPS R3000A CPU. PSP has a 32-bit MIPS R4000-series CPU. The PSP's CPU is the next generation version of what was in the PS1 and it probably uses a superset of the commands that the 3000A supported. This would be similar to how the old intel 486 compared to the older 386. That meant that PSP most likely can natively run a large portion of the original unmodified code, but there remains some portion of the work being done in software emulation because of the GPUs being completely different between PS1 and PSP and also because of the need to allow for remapping the missing controller buttons and the graphics stretching options for fitting to the PSP's screen resolution. Over on the Vita, they're using an ARM Cortex A9 quad-core CPU and a newer GPU made by PowerVR, neither of which are anything like what the PS1 had. That's full software emulation going on in the Vita.

PS2 did contain the PS1's CPU and utilized it as an I/O processor, but it was still able to be utilized to run PS1 games. Here, the GPU was being emulated also, evidenced by the fact that options for fast loading and texture smoothing were available on the console. Apparently, the later PS2 slim model eliminated this PS1 CPU, requiring PS1 games to run in full software emulation which caused some game compatibility issues that I don't think were ever resolved.

PS3 runs PS1 games in full software emulation. Early PS3's contained the PS2 Emotion Engine CPU. Some non-European models also included the Graphics Synthesizer GPU. None of them contained the PS1 hardware. Famously, the PS2 hardware was eventually phased out on all PS3 models, first eliminating the GS and emulating it, and later removing the EE and all PS2 game compatibility. Meanwhile, PS1 game support has remained on all PS3 models built.

We all know about the licensing hurdles that have to be jumped through and, frankly, most of us think it's a BS excuse since they've been able to license the content for use on so many previous devices. How hard can it really be to add PS4 to the list of approved devices that are already licensed? I work with certifying agencies at my job pretty regularly and we often have to add devices or alternate parts to a list of already approved items for agencies such as UL, CSA, CE, etc. This is a little different situation in which some negotiation over things like royalties or distribution details and sometimes separate negotiations over music takes place, but it can't be nearly as difficult as Sony makes it sound when pressed on it. There have been a couple of occasions where they run into issues where they get approval for licensing the game itself, but not for the music on games they previously had licenses. Sometimes it causes them to not re-release the game, but a couple of times, they just replaced the music with something else. Probably depends on how much work it took to swap out. All that considered, it still seems pretty likely that they're just making excuses for it taking a long time simply because they're not making it a priority to get it done.

callahan093595d ago

I agree with you complete, -Foxtrot. I have stopped by digital games on Playstation because I am pissed off at how many games I bought from the PS3 store that are now completely unplayable on PS4, when there is really no damn reason that many of them couldn't be, particularly the PSone classics.

nitus103595d ago

Still waiting for burnout revenge/takedown...seems im not the only one yet theres still no sign 😐

Hoffmann3595d ago

I think copyright/licenses with the bands are the problem. Maybe copyright issues between EA and Criterion as well..who knows.

I tried out both via emulator and they run fairly well

Immorals3595d ago

Revenge is backwards compatible on xbox one, so doubt it's that.

EA probably don't think it worth the development time, which is sad. Burnout games were some of my favourite games that generation since number 1 on the Gamecube!

rye743595d ago

There is no excuse to not have PS1 classics playable on PS4.

XanderZane3595d ago

Hhhmm.. most Sony fanboys said they didn't want B/C games on the PS4. They tell that to XB1 fanboys in every XB1 - XBox 360 B/C article. Saying, "We bought a PS4 to play new and currently PS4 titles, not old PS3/PS2 games. " Now they want PS1 games on the PS4?

Originally all the PS2 and PS1 games were suppose to go to PSNow. With the release of the PS2 emulator on the PS4, it appears those plans have been completely cancelled. I pretty much gave up on true B/C on the PS4. Sure if there is a cheap ($10 or less) PS3/PS2 game I don't own and really want, I might get it, but otherwise, I'm playing ALL my PS3, PS2 and PS1 games on my bulky 60GB PS3. I have to give Sony credit. This beast of a system gets hotter then hell and it get used a lot by my wife for streaming Netflix and Amazon Prime movies, yet the only thing that has failed on it was the Blu-Ray drive. I couldn't play PS2 games. I got it repaired and it's run fine ever since. I've left it on for a full day several times, by accident and it still never overheated and crapped out. I'm keeping it.

Retroman3595d ago (Edited 3595d ago )

Amen to that bro. my phat ps3 runs everyday watching Hulu+ or Netflix. still play my ps1,ps2 games.

until Sony able to reboot ps2,ps3 games on ps4 i will never buy ps4. im better off going to yard sales for 5-10.00 ps2-3 games.
in the future hope ps5 able to play ps1,ps2,ps3,ps4 games.

nitus103595d ago

The PS4 and XB1 were not supposed to be backwards compatible although Microsoft did that after two years and doing this did value add to the XB1 but still did not increase sales in a way Microsoft would have wished.

My 60GB PS3 (PAL Region) still works and plays nearly all PS2 games.

All in all, people only play their older games for nostalgia sake, they rarely go out and pay for them so if you had a collection of 60 PS2 games you would rarely be interested in buying a PS2 game you had not played before., although the odd gamer may. Of course, if you had sold all your old games the temptation to rebuy would be even less.

XanderZane3594d ago

@nitus10
Well I bought both Dark Cloud and Dark Cloud 2 on my PS4. They were fairly cheap at $7. I had bought some older PS1 games I never owned on my PS3 as well. I literally own hundreds of PS1, PS2 and PS3 games, so I rarely need to purchase any of the older games. As long as I have my bulky 60GB PS3, I'm good to go.

RosweeSon3595d ago

Well there's not but there is for Sony take ps1 classics from Vita and allow them on ps4 as well which is blatantly possible. Great for ps4 owners but it'll be the death of Vita as its got nout else going for it really. Barely use remote play myself.

nitus103595d ago

Personally, I have never been all that interested in handhelds although the Vita can be used as a PS4 controller and some games coming out for the PS4 are cross buy with the Vita.

Retroman3595d ago

Reason why....simple. dev to dang busy repeating boring open world formats. instead of reproducing joyful classic playable games on ps4 as reboots. insomniac prove that with R&C

WeAreLegion3595d ago

PS1 and PS2 games were coming to PS Now once upon a time. That's probably not happening. I'd love to see them come to PS4. It would be cool if publishers made large bundles of PS1 games available together, like NAMCO and ATARI used to do.

Gardenia3595d ago

They removed the classic section on the PS3 I noticed. You can still find them when using 'search' but it seems to me that they won't get the support like they use to

I guess it's too complicated with copyrights when a lot of companies don't exist anymore or changed into different companies

Funny considering Bruce left half way through development and now we get told there was an internal conflict with the story direction.

Makes you think…

HectixRose16d ago

I think it was good decision, if he was still alive, he would have been a mascot just like Kratos, drake and many others. These old dudes gotta die for new characters to take center stage with their own storyline. They keep dragging the emotional baggage into many sequels and eventually the story just turns into absolute shit show.

JEECE16d ago

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

CantThinkOfAUsername15d ago

I thought the more common complaint about Uncharted franchise was how the main cast are the good guys acting so nonchalantly while killing hundreds in cold blood (aka the dissonance between gameplay and story cutscenes). They just did it again in Part II.

Soy16d ago

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

DarXyde15d ago

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

Ashunderfire8615d ago

Sorry just had to say this lol! RICKYYYY!

Man Cuba Gooding Jr was miscast in that movie, but that part was cringey it was sad and funny at the same time man.

Ashunderfire8615d ago (Edited 15d ago )

I understand but the way they went about killing Joel, was poorly executed. Even the show of the Last of Us games tried to improved it, but it was just as bad. Well at least Joel got to know the reason why he had to die, before the death happened in the show. That part gave us the full context, but the game just let it happen with no pay off.

Joel death should have been a midway thing through the story, so we at least get to play him a little more with Ellie. Abby didn’t need to be this Hulk looking woman, but more like the show Abby which is a beater idea in my opinion.
