PC World Review: Google Chrome

PC World writes: "Google takes aim squarely at Microsoft with the release of its new Web browser, Chrome. And Microsoft should be very afraid: Chrome lives up to its hype by rethinking the Web browser in clever and convenient ways that make using the Web a more organic experience than you'd get with either Microsoft's Internet Explorer 8 or Mozilla's Firefox 3.
Chrome automatically detects the Web browser you're using and prompts you through the process of installation (right down to telling you how to access downloaded files within Firefox, for example). When you first run the application, Chrome imports your bookmarks, passwords, and settings from Firefox or Internet Explorer. It even can grab username and password data, and it automatically populates those fields for you when you use Chrome for the first time to visit a particular site."

Hmmm. this sounds really interesting. I'm gonna check this out for sure!

You should, Chrome is a very good browser. It's not quite up there on the level of Firefox, and it's more of a memory hog(but more stable), but it's still very good. Better than IE by far imo.

killax35636505d ago

Google Chrome isn't really a 'Memory Hog'. If you have 6-7 tabs open simultaneously throughout the day, I can almost guarentee G.C. will use less memory then either Firefox or IE.

Google Chrome is designed to be more memory efficient over the long term (aka have several tabs open over several hours).

The Google Chrome comic explains it well:

http://www.google.com/googl...

I use Firefox and IE all the time so I know how much memory both can use when you have a lot of tabs open for extended periods of time.

In the past week, IE has often used up 500-600MB's of RAM when I had a lot of tabs open (6-7 tabs; usually streaming video) for several hours. The memory usage for Firefox has sometimes hit 300-400MB's of RAM.

Chrome uses a distinct process for every tab. If you have 3 tabs open, you will have 4 processes: 1 for the main browser and 3 for the tabs. Having said that means that the process for the main browser will surely use less memory than FF because it doesn't count the memory consumption of the tabs. If you open 10 tabs in Chrome you will have 11 processes and if you add up the memory used by all Chrome processes you will definitely see that Chrome uses more memory that Firefox.

Nope, GC uses less memory over the long term.

Read the Google comic ( http://www.google.com/googl... ;its quite technical but presents it in a very friendly way). It says everything you said and more.

Over the long term (if u have several tabs open over the span of hours), Google Chrome uses less memory either IE or Firefox. B/c there's less memory fragmentation going on (see the google comic, around page 5 or 6). Read the comic it will back up everything I say.

verb3k6505d ago (Edited 6505d ago )

Grab your favorite calculator and see for yourself :)

Add the memory consumption of all Chrome processes.

I used Firefox fully loaded with all sorts of add-ons to open 3 tabs.
I used a bare Chrome to open the same 3 tabs.

Result:
Firefox 63,000 k
Chrome 71,000 k
(not sure about the zeros in there because I didn't really give them a look , imagine any number)

I know that Chrome uses less memory than most browsers, but not Firefox.

killax35636505d ago (Edited 6505d ago )

Keyword long term and 3 tabs isn't a lot either.

Read the google comic, it says INITIALLY the memory cost is a bit more but over the LONG-TERM GC uses less memory.

As I mentioned, over the past 2 weeks, I have seen Firefox use 300-400MB's of RAM when I had 6-7 tabs open constantly for 5-6 hours of usage (varying from streaming video, to google maps to whatever else).

BTW, 63MB's of RAM for Firefox and 71MB's for GC? That's light usage.

verb3k6505d ago (Edited 6505d ago )

The same claim is made by Mozilla, Firefox will use less RAM in the long-term. You don't believe me? Google it :)

I.E. sucks...haven't used it since FF existed

There are things that i really like in chrome, like how you can resize the text edit box size right here :D

qwertyuiopasdfghjkl6505d ago

Are they reviewing the Beta release? If so that's f'd up.

ar6505d ago

It's Google. Don't expect to see anything else then a beta soon. Gmail is still a beta for crying out loud.

TheIneffableBob6505d ago

Yeah, Google "betas" tend to be fairly polished, which the exception of that web accelerator program they made. What a terrible program...

Chrome has been in development for 2 years, by the way.

It's too early to use this product for online transactions as such, im sure its pretty secure and that but id wait a lil longer down the line for future revisions/editions before jumping onboard, quite happy with firefox atm, it's established itself and has a load of great plug-ins.

Personally I'm quite happy with chrome, I like the fresh and fast feeling it has.

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing57d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9257d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit57d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing57d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9257d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
