Is Overwatch “Fixing” Console Players?

Rich Drummond of Gaming Tech United writes:

"Many of us who play video games on a consistent basis have been verbally berated by a twelve-year-old while playing our favorite first person shooter game. This is something that comes with the territory of online gaming and seems even more present when playing on a console. Teams scream racist, bigoted, and offensive phrases at each other, as players race to get the most kills on their team, even when playing an objective-based game mode, like capture the flag. Is this something that comes with the territory of playing on an Xbox or PlayStation? Is there something inherently wrong with us “console peasants”? Blizzard’s Overwatch has the potential to help change that mindset."

"Now to be fair, yes there are a few bad eggs, but it’s nothing to the level of playing Call of Duty or Battlefield and getting yelled at by a 14-year-old about how I should kill myself."

Hahaha. This is one of the reasons I left the CoD games. Now THAT is a toxic place on consoles. I'm loving Overwatch and I'd agree with the point that people are starting to shift the way that they play this game to cater towards the better of the team. Didn't think I'd live to see the day that console players embrace another mindset outside of "gotta get those kills" in a FPS.

GamingTechUnited3617d ago

Yeahits really cool to see the console market embrace this game like they have. And I think it's important to note that when we say "fixing" it doesn't mean just through communications. It means through playing roles correctly and things of that nature as well.

KindaGrump3617d ago

That's what I love about this game. If a team cooperates correctly, it's really a thing of beauty.

Surt3617d ago

Not surprised. OW was billed as the "happy" FPS. The game for the more sensitive lads. It is the PC of PC gaming. Ha! (consoles too) Not for me tho. Rainbow six siege, counter strike, and DOOM are taking up my time.

GamingTechUnited3617d ago

I don't think there's anything wrong with that though. Not every game is for everyone. And man, DOOM was top notch!

Erik73573617d ago

Overwatch, Halo, and Counterstrike are my fps of choice.

Kane223617d ago

yes..cause its never toxic on pc...moba games on pc have by far some of the most toxic community Ive ever seen..

Pandamobile3617d ago

League of Legends is notoriously cancerous. Last time I played it though, there was no voice chat built into the game. So at least there you don't need to hear screeching children scream horrible shit over a mic.

GamingTechUnited3617d ago

The piece isn't arguing that there aren't toxic communities on PC as well. It's just saying that in terms of the consoles, the Overwatch community is starting to correct itself.

rainslacker3616d ago (Edited 3616d ago )

Stuff exists everywhere, in every social outlet on the internet. It's not a console/PC thing, nor is it exclusive to any particular game. No matter where you go, you are going to run into it unless there is some serious moderation. Even on paid subscription services, like WOW, you see this stuff, although it's less common because it's a pay service, and heavily moderated, but you get in pick up raid vent or jump into some random voice chat app, and you will hear it there too.

I think more popular games seem to get more of the "toxicity", mostly because they're popular, and many popular things attract the lower common denominators who don't know how to behave respectfully. The more isolated something is from the mainstream(relatively to the medium) the less likely you are to run into it...except in some cases where it's actually really bad, because it's just the community that has been fostered there.

Omnisonne3617d ago

I must've been extremely lucky on the ps3/ps4 regarding the players over the years, I don't think i've ever experienced a kid yelling insults at everyone. Perhaps the occasional hate messages, but never vocal.

A few weeks ago a guy on OW started yelling and mumbling about how I didn't play Pharah the right way, as he continued spamming grenades with Junkrat hoping for the rest of the team to take the objective. That was the only time in recent memory I've experienced vitriol in a game.

Though it could have something to do with being in Europe, now that i think of it.. might have been cussed out in French or German multiple times without realizing it

GamingTechUnited3617d ago

Haha maybe being in Europe has kept you a bit further away from the United States' online gaming rage. I can't count the number of times there's been annoying / offensive people in the games I've played over the years.

rainslacker3616d ago (Edited 3616d ago )

I don't frequent MP much, but I can say that the times I've actually come across anyone spewing hate on any platform is actually exceedingly rare in relation to how often I come across pleasant people, or just groups that remain silent.

I always wondered given that I don't frequent MP as much, if people are just exagerrating the bad times, because they often make it seem like that's what you'll get 9 times out of 10. I've seen the youtubes of some of the more hilarious types, but can say I've never really witnessed it much in my own experiences.

Of course, I also know how to use a mute button, and don't play some games which seem to have the stigma of haters attached to them more.

I have gotten the occasional follow up PM after a match in some games, either mocking my lack of skill, or saying something because they're pissed I won, but I just report it and move on and don't let it get to me too much.

The immature people screaming was heavily reduced not by any specific game, but by party chat. When Party chat was introduced in-game voice chat almost disappeared.

GamingTechUnited3617d ago

I do thing party chat has taken its toll on the in-game chatter, but there are still many, many screeching children and offensive, overly sensitive manbabies out there. Again, like the article says, I don't think one game is necessarily changing things overnight, but a steady flow of successful games like this will start to change gamers' mindsets.

Also in the article we dive into more things than just chat, be it playing character roles correctly, playing to fit the game mode, or choosing characters to balance a team out.

Moe-Gunz3617d ago (Edited 3617d ago )

Personally It has become rare for me to hear anyone using in-game chat. Before party chat it was heavy. 360 introduced party chat and it became rare to hear anyone in-game. PS4 released with party chat and you would think people didn't know their system came with a headset. It's silent in games. You say there are many and I have to disagree, because going from getting my account on XBL suspended because kids yelling, arguments, and false reporting, to not being able to communicate with anyone in-game shows the significance of party chat and how drastic the change is.

I highly doubt Overwatch is doing anything to fix this problem. I have not found the need to speak and I'm able to do what needs to be done to help the team. It's not a super tactical game in my opinion. It's pseudo-tactical, and nothing like when we use to play Socom 2 where if you didn't communicate we voted to kick you out. I'll feel more compelled to communicate in a battlefield game or The Last of Us multiplayer.

I truly believe party chat and cross-game chat is the #1 reason. Having played these systems before those features was introduced it's very apparent. I don't think Overwatch has anything to do with anything to be honest.

"playing character roles correctly, playing to fit the game mode, or choosing characters to balance a team out"

I agree Overwatch helps here because it blatantly tells you your team is balance or isn't. Still if you get a bunch of people who all know each other and are in party chat together, they can all pick the same character and destroy your team despite the game saying the team is unbalanced. #1 way to win in games is communication and it's why most of the time parties will beat a group of randomly put together people. Overwatch is getting too much credit from gamers lately. Like it's changing the landscape or something and it's just not.

rainslacker3616d ago (Edited 3616d ago )

I personally think the more popular a game becomes, and the more it goes mainstream, the more likely it is you're going to run across the types of people you talk about.

Party chat will certainly have a different vibe than a public chat, because people don't behave in public chat like they actually would in public, and instead use it to just get attention. In a party chat, it's too easy to get kicked out, so more people exhibit some level of manners and respect, just to remain part of the group. There is no such impetus to do that in a public forum, where anyone can join. Moderation obviously doesn't really deter people too much, although Blizzard does tend to be pretty heavy handed with their moderation, which they can do because they know it works to keep the trolls quelled for the most part, and they don't get all freaky about losing players like most other companies do.

I wouldn't be surprised if some people that may have come from elsewhere have started to realize that Blizzard isn't really going to allow abusive behavior to go unchecked, and for many of those people, this may be their first real experience with heavy moderation...something you don't see really in many other popular MP games. Anyone accustomed to Blizzards games, would likely know this going in, but for others, they may feel the hammer come down on them, or realize that their brand of trolling isn't tolerated by Blizzard itself. They may test the waters, but word gets around, and Blizzard is quick to inform people to shape up or ship out.

I don't think a flow of games, successful or otherwise, will really change how people act online. Community is fostered, and nurtured based on the people that play it. If the majority of people that play it ignore the people causing problems, those problem people eventually conform to the communities mindset or go somewhere else where they can get attention. Unfortunately, it would seem that for every convert to a civilized person, you'll have one or two that will happily take their place.

It's also worth mentioning that in any social setting, the maturity can ebb and flow based on the time of the year. Right now, a lot of those immature types are off on vacation with their parents due to school being out.

Nintendo Switch 2 Drops Must-Play Free FPS You Can Enjoy From Today

In 2023, developed by Blizzard Entertainment, Overwatch 2 was released, which was basically a big, glorified update of the original game that launched in 2016. Now, it’s simply reverted to being called just Overwatch, which is probably for the best.

The second iteration of Overwatch was released on the original Nintendo Switch, and while it’s still an enjoyable game with cross-play/progression functions, it’s still lacking in terms of performance and visuals, compared to its PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S counterparts. Well, it was.

As of today, the second iteration of Overwatch is natively available on the Nintendo Switch 2, just in time for Season 2: Summit.

The Nintendo Switch 2 version of Overwatch will have increased resolution both in handheld and docked modes, enhanced textures and lighting, up to 60 frames-per second, improved audio and more.

Blizzard is readying a patch to address the issue that the game is still running in Switch 1 build and just 30 fps.

Neonridr46d ago

you'd think they'd test it before pushing it live, lol.

that being said, clearly it's not running as intended.

repsahj46d ago

They know it for sure. Maybe they didn't finish optimizing the game by the targeted release date. That's why they released the Switch 1 30fps version first. XD
