Windows Announces "Anniversary Update"

A couple of weeks ago Microsoft took to the E3 stage and introduced two new innovations coming in 2016. One being the Xbox One S which is a more slimmed down, more sleek version of their big black gaming box currently on the market.

I'm very curious to see how this plays out. Microsoft instead of trying to push consoles through exclusivity are trying get costumers to invest in their ecosystem and similtaniously build out win 10 and xbox one.

Regardless of if it's a failure or catches on its going to be fun to watch to see where this goes.

I'm curious as well. Without bringing fanboyism into I find it hard to believe this is going to hurt console sales that much.

They are breaking the mold and taking risk to make all one ecosystem.

I'm curious to see if 3rd party jumps aboard. That's going to be the biggest thing.

bleedsoe9mm3636d ago

my opinion the vast majority of console gamers aren't switching to PC , and like phil said if they do thanks for playing ms games . i'm willing to bet we see allot of indie devs taking up crossplay very similar to the ps3 vita push .

It really is. Because it could either fail horribly or potentially give huge growth to Microsofts gaming division and I'll give some examples.

1. Bigger Game/Online communitys. The bigger the games community the bigger mindshare it has and the bigger replay value it brings. So this means more people buying dlc and micro-transactions and increase in word of mouth to grow sales (which is underestimated sometimes).

2. More hardware sales. Lets say someone owns an xbox, and that person is looking to buy a computer, they might have previously bought a mac but instead decide to buy a win 10 computer so he can download his xbox games. And vice versa, someone who has a gaming rig pc might want a console for the family living room, why not buy an xbox because a lot of his games will already be available for free? However this could backfire and pc gamers who want to pick up a console see no need to buy an xbox if they already get all its exclusives on pc.

3. Increase profit. Putting all their first party games on windows store will increase the number of people visiting the store. So for example, lets say someone goes to the store to buy forza horizon 3, they then see Recore and decide to buy that as well. So Microsoft just gained $40 extra profit from someone who was just visiting the store to buy forza. It isnt a question of will this happen, because it will, it's a matter of how many to really make a dent.

4. More games. Lets say Gears 4 sells an extra 1m copies because of pc sales. Microsoft now can use some of that extra profit to sign more exclusives and fund more games. Making their ecosystem even more attractive for consumers.

5. UWP Initiative. Microsoft plans to have uwp the standard for pc and xbox Which "supposedly decreases the amount of work required to port games between the two." So for example lets say a dev puts a uwp jrpg in steam. That dev then sees they can easily port their game to both win store and xbox one with very little development cost. Even if it only sells like 100k why wouldn't they target those two platforms if it costs them practically nothing?

6. Broader appeal. In some countries buying a console simple isn't worth it. However win10 is worldwide. So Microsoft Ips now have broader appeal, and all it takes it one of their pc games to blow up in countries like South Korea for huge profits.

We are all watching.
My guess on it has always been it helping win10 and hurting xbo sales.
No I don't see xbox gamers going pc....I see pc gamers staying pc or going pc/ps4 combo. Instead of a pc/xbo combo..pc is already a better xbo.
It shows that xbo failed as a exclusive gaming system. At the end of the day it's a win win for win 10.

I think you'll see smaller indie and middle tear devs release in the store. But right now it's just not profitable because the store has such low marketshare.

However a year from now when Microsoft releases a lot of their AAA first party titles in the store we'll see if it has gained enough marketshare to be more appealing to these devs. Right now we just dont know.

@bleed

Agreed. I'm not a PC gamer and I don't plan on buying a high end one to game with. I only want a console and I'm sure many others feel the same.

I barely even use my regular laptop much considering it's just quicker to use my iPad or iPhone. So getting a spec'd out one for gaming just isn't realistic. It will be interesting to see how this new strategy plays out!

Not looking good. Hopefully Asha Sharma is able to turn Phil’s disaster around.

To me it's still quite remarkable how they can cash-in 5.3bn in revenue in a single quarter, since their hardware is basically dead.

Jingsing50d ago

The stock mark is what makes Microsoft remarkable, They have convinced every institutional and retail investor to just keep piling money into them. Like many big tech giants they are just a big growing pyramid scheme. As long as people keep dropping money into ETF's that cover the market Microsoft will always be liquid. At the same time it is completely stifling innovation and competition. People need to start being more discreet in how they invest their money as it's killing the system.

Tanktopmaster9251d ago

Once they re-evaluate exclusive all will be fine….

S2Killinit51d ago

Riiiiight because people will just flock back to them for one or two games per year.

Jingsing51d ago

15+ years of bad performance is what they call irreparable in business. It is time for them to sell off the assets and get out of entertainment.

Tanktopmaster9250d ago

These declines are on the back of extra revenue received from releasing games like Forza horizon 5 on PlayStation. So I’m being sarcastic here when I said they should go back to exclusives. Killing off a revenue stream from Ps5 sales will only make things worse
