This will only affect videos and movies though. This title seems click baity, so I just wanted to make that clear.

LOL IDIOT GAMER

HIGH RES TEXTURES?????

uth113591d ago

4K games will require 4K digital assets, which will greatly explode their size.

dumahim3591d ago

It doesn't require it. Would be nice, though.
Being that Neo/Scorpio are meant to play the same games as the regular PS4/XBO, I would doubt they'll be upgrading all the textures and focus on the 4k res and maybe some other effects.

nveenio3590d ago

4K assets? Go look at how large a 4K image is. Now, how many textures do you think a game has, seeing as how most single textures are used multiple times in a single scene?

NohansenBoy3591d ago

The difference in 4k vs 1080P isn't even that great though. Increasing textures only makes things less blurry at this point. It's not the same leap as 32x32 to 1024x1024 which added a great amount of detail that couldn't be achieved. Unlike movies, games can render assets and make them look better just fine.

How big is the 4K display and hardware market share anyway? Aren't those markets still rather young and expensive to enter?

NohansenBoy3590d ago

Here's a thread to explain the this stuff better than I can. https://www.reddit.com/r/pc...

Even though actual 4K textures of course offer somewhat better results, the machine can still resize textures just fine. I don't think the machine actually needs to render the texture as the file indicates. Also, any machine that render in 4K, be it native or upscaled is going to be expensive. The GTX 1080 seams like the best entry level solution for 4K right now.

_-EDMIX-_3590d ago

What? lol have you not factored that PS4 and XONE are getting upgrades that might play titles in upscaled or even native 4K?

@The_Infected US I guess.

Nightmar3Demom3591d ago

We're seeing data caps in lots of areas in the US. It's greed, pure and simple.

UltraNova3591d ago

Another way of controlling piracy? Greed is a given...

How on earth will 4K become mainstream when data caps are on the rise instead of dying?

One steps forward two steps back.

uth113591d ago (Edited 3591d ago )

Not greed, there's only so much bandwidth to go around and with people starting to stream in 4K and using more and more data, it's inevitable this happens without investment in new infrastructure.

Servbot413591d ago

How would caps control piracy? Either you download the game digitally via a storefront, or from a torrent; they are going to be similar in size, unless the pirated version is heavily compressed or trimmed, in which case it would be smaller than the legal version.

badz1493590d ago

LOL @controlling piracy! Pirated games and movies are smaller in size, so NO!

It's not. It's pure greed! I don't have a data caps where I live but due to ISP monopoly, we have to pay premium price for high speed fiber internet and even then, thry put a limit on speed. I used to live in Japan and I already used 100Mbps up/down connection in 2005 for a mere $50 a month. Now that my country finally catched up to that, I'm paying $100 a month for 100M down 50M up connection. That's pure BS!

UltraNova3590d ago

Regarding limiting piracy...

When content can be had for 'free' its a lot easier to get carried away with that 'download torrent' prompt, easily negating any smaller size files jiberish you people seem to so sure about.

Sometimes i dont understand you people...

JasonKCK3590d ago

No data caps in my area but they do throttle the speed.

Not only do we need more space on our SSD.. but also a bigger wallet to carry around our money. I can not imagine how much the first REAL 4K optimized game will cost, bet games will cost $90 once 4K is the defacto standard.

We might end up in a world, where consoles will vanish (due stupid 4K development costs) and on the PC we will be getting games in an episodic format (like the latest Hitman, just waaaay more episodes) or simply NO games at all, if Witcher 3 was only possible due the consoles. Will we have a Neo Geo like market in the future, where games will come with a $500 price tag? due the expensive nature of making true 4K textures, levels and other assets?

So far, the whole industry aint moving to 100% 4k. With cheap gpus like the rX480 99% of the PC users and soon console user wont care about 4K and as long that remains the majority, we will be playing at 1080p for the next 10 or 20years.

If the costs of 4K game development remain the same as the during the 1080p decade or so, then sure lets switch. But if game-dev suddenly cost twice or more.. forget about it. Do we really need 4K, 8K, 16K? ... a bigger resolution ain´t making the game any better. The next GTA6, if they decide to go 4K 100% ... will probably have a budget over $1bil. GTA5 optimized for PS360 <720p had a budget/cost of nearly $300mill. The death of many studios/publisher is imminent with the insane 4K cost.

SgtPepper18063591d ago

I say stick to 1080 as a standard. I'd rather better games doing new things at 1080p than iterative games that don't take risks in 4K.

samden3591d ago

4k hasn't taken over in households, it is still a couple of years away from being the next standard.

hsark3591d ago

yes if i remember correctly bumping up the resolution also has a cost implication for game development .....well till the software and hardware catches up which definitely lags behind the speed of TVs on Tokyo were busy doing R&D in 4k content....while 8k is being sorted out for the Olympics though most of these wont be released to consumers yet as globally broadcasters don't have the infrastructure to beam out uncompressed 4k/8k live content.......

Scatpants3591d ago

I don't see why it would cost more to develop in 4K. You could use most of the assets made for 1080 it would just require better textures and more horsepower to run.

Nathan_Hale533591d ago (Edited 3591d ago )

Sorry, but that logic is stupid. A majority of game creators make their assets a lot higher quality than in the actual game, and optimize it and "dumb it down" for current technology, textures included actually, practically all of them make their assets higher than the targeted specs. Plus GTAV was developed for next gen, they just really optimized and dumbed it down as much as they could till it ran mostly smoothly.

Japanese developers are a piece of crap at optimizing games for consoles, this game should be played at 60fps on PS4 pro and Xbox One X with easy....instead runs at 30fps with frame pacing issues.Crap development! And really you need a 2080TI to play at 4K@60fps on a game that looks average in the graphics department...what crap is this!

Arcade mode is a huge surprise for me. I have played every gears game and have never got into vs multiplayer because i just got owned every time but i've been playing arcade mode all weekend and had loads of fun even getting mvp a few times lol.
One thing i will say though is that even though this is a tech test and the matchmaking has improved over the last few days if it runs like that at launch the criticism will kill it.
