Microsoft butchered its E3 Project Scorpio messaging

Who is the Xbox Scorpio going to be for? Microsoft had a really tough time answering this seemingly easy question at E3.

They announced it the same time they announced the Xbox One S.
They literally killed off all potential sales of that Xbox One S by announcing the Scorpio.
Then they wonder why they are struggling...
Does Apple tell you the features of the IPhone 8 at the same time as the iPhone 7? No, because people will wait and buy the 8 over the 7.
BTW, yes, I do have a business degree.
The Xbox One S does 4k video and upscale games to 4k, something Microsoft promised when they originally launched the Xbox One, they had 3 years they could have added those features in but they didn't.

darthv723541d ago

You may have a degree in business but this is more about common sense. There are two target demographics. And like previous generations where you have a entry level system and a high end... they can both coexist.

Like when people were still buying ps2 slims for their kids while others buying the ps3 for themselves. And both did well for themselves.

Now unlike that example, the games for xb1 work across the board. New comers can get the xb1 for cheap and when they want to upgrade to scorpio they can. When they are ready.

And those features that could have been added... ps4 could have had them as well. Neo is getting them and people will buy it for them as well. Sony will have an entry level ps4 and a high end one so same game different players and its likely going to turn out okay just like for MS and xbox.

TheLEGENDofTydo3541d ago

The only reason anyone will buy a S instead of waiting for Scorpio is if their system broke or they don't own a regular Xbox 1 (which will be few sales for this reason). There is literally, figuratively, and imaginatively no other reason to buy one

nix3541d ago

The reason both consoles didn't have those 4K n new Bluray disc format is because it was not out two years back.

As for people buying Scorpio, I've seen 10 ppl here get hyper over it. I've seen 100 ppl get excited on Quantum Break and see how that turned out.

Those people who buy 2 consoles do exist but they're in minority.

onanie3541d ago

anyone with commonsense would ignore an xbone/slim if they already have a gaming PC.
anyone with commonsense would have the reasonable choice of upgrading their PC rather than buying an xbone/slim (if they really wanted to play ms exclusives) and have the added benefit of being able to play all other non MS games in higher fidelity.
anyone with commonsense would also have the reasonable choice of waiting to see the value proposition of the scorpio (when the price is finally revealed) compared to similar PCs, before deciding to buy it (or not).

Phew! This guy has a business degree and despite all the people on here saying theyre going to buy the xbox one S, he knows you really aren't.

Sm00thNinja3541d ago

Says who i preordered mine immediately

GamingIVfun3541d ago

Most of the people buying an Xbox One S own Xbox One already and are Xbox/ Microsoft diehards. Won't increase the number of games sold, just selling hardware that makes very little money if any.

maybelovehate3541d ago

It was kind of odd that it was announced at all. Not sure what they gain by announcing it now.

BossBattle3541d ago

Killed off potential sales huh?...but the preorders say otherwise.

Rude-ro3541d ago

They said the same thing about the original Xbox one release and you still can buy a day one. Do not believe the pr spins.

PistolsAtDawn3541d ago

So people ONLY buy the most recent and most expensive phones? Or are you saying that people will line up around the block for the most powerful new console? Or that maybe phones and consoles aren't the same thing?

souldestroyer143541d ago

It's called transparency. Microsoft wants to sell the xbox one s but at the same time they don't want to piss people off that buy the s and "alienate" them by holding off on announcing the scorpio and releasing it shortly after they launch the slim model xbox one. They are giving people options and gave the people all the info they need to know about scorpio(6tflops, vague release date and full forward and backwards compatibility ). It's actually good business Mr business major

3541d ago
souldestroyer143541d ago

They have games coming they just don't announce them 5-10 years before they are released. Why promote games that are hardly past concept when they have exclusives coming out this holiday season and early 2017. It's not a contest it's a business.

DarkHeroZX3541d ago

Honestly the announcement of every Xbox game going to PC is what killed the Xbox for me.

Xavy3541d ago

See that and the Xbots hates you for telling how it is, they want you to love MS no matter what =D loool

maybelovehate3541d ago

Why does it matter? Games are games. Play them where you prefer.

DarkHeroZX3541d ago (Edited 3541d ago )

Pistol I'm gonna have to disagree with you. See when MS' press conference first started i was highly interested in the Slim up until Scalebound was also confirmed for the PC. That basically killed it for me. Then the Scorpio was announced towards the end and it really confused the heck out of me. I don't even get MS' strategy anymore and I feel as though October's NPD sales won't change at all for MS. So what your pre-ordering the console? I am no longer interested. This amd the Scorpio will only appeal to the diehards within the Xbox community looking ro upgrade. However they have now given PC and PS gamers absolutely no reason to switch over. See Neo's market is still going to be vaild simply because Sony has legitimate exclusives. But MS litterally told PC gamers to buy and PS4 along with their PC and forget the rest. PS4 gamers or gamers who dont want to support MS as much as they can can build a PC, get a cheap windows 10 key, and they are set. See even if I hated Sony and PlayStation but really wanted to play their exclusives I know I have to give in and buy the PS4 or its never gonna happen. But for MS it ain't gonna happen.

And before you say "Oh but MS gets paid either way," Yeah they do but on consoles there is soo much more potential revenue. For every 3rd party game sold on Xbox or Xbox Love store MS makes money on top of exclusive. They make money for every controller, collector's edition, Xbox live gold sales, etc. that they lose out on making wayyy more revenue then just the exclusive game sale on Windows 10. And honestly with all games getting a free PC code I'll just see if I can get that from my friend lol. But MS dropped the ball on this. And while everyone is focused on Neo being inferior to scropio and the Neo potentially struggling, people need to stop and realize that MS is the one who may ultimately suffer. Because at the end of the day a high end PS4 that plays PS4 games with better performance and visuals is still going to attract that enthusiast market. But smart enthusiast looking at Xbox may just build or upgrade a PC.

PistolsAtDawn3541d ago (Edited 3541d ago )

The did NOT literally kill all Slim sales, I pre-ordered mine the same day. On Amazon the 2tb...not even the 500gb $299 version...is THE top selling console right now....so the $399....NOT the $299 version of the Slim is selling more than any other console on Amazon. Not to mention, even if someone does NOT want to go all in for the Scorpio for gaming...the Slim is still the best AND cheapest 4k Blu-Ray Player with HDR on the market...so even for people that have absolutely NO interest in gaming, but want a 4k Blu-Ray player they can grab the Slim. On top of that, Scorpio comes out in a year, so yes, I will get the Slim so I can play upscaled HDR games until then.

Downplay attempt failed. Do they let you return your business degree via email too?

n4rc3541d ago

No.. but they give you the specs of the 7 and 7s..

Damn damn thing..

super_bruno3541d ago

"BTW, yes, I do have a business degree. " -UltimateMaster

Oh boy....

antikbaka3541d ago

there is 2DS and New 3DS XL ...somehow ppl can buy wgat they prefer and it's ok

sho0ok3541d ago

This is not like IPhone 7 & 8, it is more like 7 and 7 plus. One is for the casuals with standard specs, the other for the geeks with better specs.

Nothing confusing In This matter, unless your too dumb to understand, no offense.

Phil Spencer said at the beginning that the Scorpio will provide uncompromised 4k and VR for gamers. If you like those things you'll like the Scorpio. Stop acting stupid, you know exactly what MS' message is.

Xavy3541d ago

Phil says alot of things and forgets that he said some other things and backtracks on things etc etc. Dont believe everything some corporate dude tells you.

Sunny_D3541d ago

Remember how he said he wasn't a fan of upgradable consoles and then people started trashing Sony when the NEO rumors surfaced only to shut up when they realized MS is doing the same thing as Sony. Hell, with all the games going to PC, they are pretty much leaving the console business.

Manic20143541d ago

@Sunny_D

I think you mean he stated he's not a fan of mid generation upgrades, instead of taking half a step he wants to take full step, which I believe Scorpio is.

souldestroyer143541d ago

Like maniac said. He wasn't a fan of the one.5 idea and scorpio is no 1.5 it's 4x as powerful.

The same people that write these blogs are the same people that said PS3 is doomed are the same people that said Microsoft will leave the console business. IDIOTS.

Dabigkahuna763541d ago (Edited 3541d ago )

How many articles they gonna create like this is anyone asking Sony or Nintendo what's they reasoning for releasing new consoles while they already have consoles out

Fin_The_Human3541d ago

I just said the same thing.

Its a shame that Scorpio is talk of the town because other great things that were announced at E3 are being over shadowed by some many Scorpio MS articles.

I mean the hot page always has one or two Scorpio articles....its enough to drive a man crazy!!!!!!!

Kiwi663541d ago (Edited 3541d ago )

Well these articles do keep getting submitted by those who have made it their new mission to find every article out there about it , more negative than positive , but eventually they'll move onto something else

Pachter: "I Think The New Xbox Console Is Already Dead, They've Blown It by Embracing Game Pass"

Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter believes the next Xbox console might be already dead due to Microsoft embracing Game Pass at $30.

You know the world is f’d up when Michael Pachter has given up cheerleading Xbox.

Eonjay13h ago

The crazy part is that this crazy fool was saying that Sony was doomed (or in his words 'going to be run over by Microsoft') because of GamePass after the Activision Deal. He was the one telling them to embrace GamePass and now that its killed them he is acting like he never said that.

Iceball200012h ago

I agree but that was before they doubled the price of game pass

peppeaccardo6h ago

this senile old f@rt is still in business ?

blacktiger6h ago

You know the world is f'd up when investors listen to Michael Patchtcher after the advice "Sony is doomed if Microsoft buys Activision and put it out on gamepass"and now he's saying "I Think The New Xbox Console Is Already Dead, They've Blown It by Embracing Game Pass"

I feel bad for investors.

Wouldn't it be the case of Pachter finally agreeing with parts of us rather than we agreeing with him?

I remember vividly that back in the day when GP was introduced and shaped further, many of us were saying that it's a great service on one hand. But were also already skeptical, too, as to how Microsoft would be able to keep the service running financially in the future.

Or/and how it would affect studios and game development in general.

As of March 2026, I think we have the answers some of us anticipated back then, when it was still Pachter who had forecasted «100 million subscribers».

Outside_ofthe_Box9h ago

A lot of this is just basic logic and common sense.

How much does it cost to develop a game? How much does it cost to market a game? How much does it cost pay devs/publishers to release on GamePass?

How much do users pay per month/year on GamePass? How many users does Microsoft need to be subscribed at once for them to truly be profitable to where GamePass pays for ITSELF(i.e not including stuff like in app purchases that they would get regardless of GamePass' existence).

You would need a large amount of subscribers or increase it's price to a point where it's no longer a "bargain" for it to be profitable.... if you're asking me. For some reason Pachter didn't see it that way nor did MS' users.

bigfish16h ago

Likely the next Xbox will have a premium price tag so they have some profit margin on the low numbers they sell. We all know that the bulk of revenue will come from 3rd party sales on other devices and perhaps some from game pass.

Hypertension14012h ago(Edited 12h ago)

Not to mention the fact that if it does have steam, nobody is going to buy games off the windows store.

If they dont have free online, this thing is dead to me.

TheCaptainKuchiki15h ago(Edited 15h ago)

And even Gamepass flopped. The end goal of Gamepass was to be hegemonic, to kill game purcahses with subscriptions. But that never happened. Game sales are still thriving, Gamepass' subscriber count has stalled, it's costly for MS and studios and its price is increasing.
The purchase of Activision allows them to hide Gamepass' failure. Not suprising that gamepass was removed from Nadella yearly bonus, they knew they would never hit the targets.

Michiel198914h ago

the tinfoil hat is on!
You think they spend 75 billion to hide that gp isnt doing well? XD
They totally didnt buy activision because they got some of the biggest and most profitable ips on the planet, but instead they bought it so you can't say online that gamepass failed!! that's totally the reasoning fr fr

Outside_ofthe_Box9h ago

He never said any of that..

Said that it ALLOWED them to, not that it was THE reason for the purchase...

Rainbowcookie14h ago

I am not a Pachter fan , but I have to agree...who would have though. It used to be to sell cheaper hardware that is subsidised by First party game sales in the first few years until you can reach millions owning the console and by that time you can cheapen your hardware because the tech have been revised. With gamepass on everything and developers losing sales that option is now limited. With the onset of more options for games and developers going for Gass gambling FOMO style games and dlc consumers have become rightfully picky. Add that to growing hardware prices and escalating ram and pandering to society... it kills a brand. Most og gamers are gonna find you out and stay away. Put on the pressure of companies demanding higher revenue for sales, the poor developer has no other option to put a new coat of paint on a copy of another successful game. Innovation , what we are looking for doesn't happen a lot because the danger of failing could lead to budget cuts and them letting you go...so you play it safe and make a copy of a copy. Yes we get genres and types but 80% is the same game we have had for ages. So then because you are scared you let them put it on gamepass and you know you know at least what you get.

Rogue Trader gets an infinitely brief DLC teaser

Last year, Owlcat announced they were working on another CRPG set within the world of Warhammer 40,000 called Dark Heresy. This would have potentially led to an assumption that they were done with their previous game, Rogue Trader, but nope! They're still going, and a brief teaser for that CRPG's next bit of DLC was shared (and when I say brief, I do mean it), and to wet your appetite, some gameplay for Dark Heresy is there to have a look at too.
