What's Wrong with Final Fantasy X?

Eyes on FF: " I still love Final Fantasy X in a familiar sort of way and I can appreciate it's good qualities, but after so many years together, it seems the negatives that I previously ignored are making themselves more apparent. Especially since I've been seeing other games from all genres, and seeing what else the world of gaming has to offer. Here are the things Final Fantasy X does that I don't remember it doing while we were dating."

I love FFX, but sometimes, the conversations and animation movements are so exaggerated and super cheesy, almost making feel like a fool, hoping nobody decides to walk in at that very moment which would only make me feel even more foolish haha.

KentBenMei3617d ago

It's an old game so it has issues, but why do you care what people think so much? They're idiots if they don't appreciate this anyway.

KwietStorm_BLM3617d ago

That sounds very silly and self conscious for playing a video game.

metalgod883617d ago (Edited 3617d ago )

Am I seriously the only person who feels that the reactions and animations during conversations doesn't look natural? In most cases, they're fine, but occasionally, the animation is so exaggerated or over the top, it just looks ridiculous and is embarrassing to watch.

Despite this, I still love the game and the HD overhaul is great. I mean, even the song that plays during the game selection is awesome.

FF X Started the linear form of FF, which I don't like but I enjoyed the game very much. It was considered a masterpiece but secretly started the road downward, like RE4. Another game where it was good, but changed the formula for the worse.

I personally never really liked FFX. Especially after playing FFVII, FFVIII and FFIX you will see that FFX doesn't feel much like the older games

Thankfully FFXII was much better. But then there was FFXIII...

Name Last Name3617d ago

FFXII was not better than FFX!

Omnislashver363617d ago

I kinda like FFX's quirks here and there, they bring a sense of humility to the experience and remind you that you kinda have to fill in the blanks to make the story your own. The game is not perfect by any means, and that's what makes it real. It IS an older game now, also, so I'll let it slide compared to new games. I didn't think the remasters were super high quality either- still seems very PS2.5ish.

I guess to get the real FFX nex-gen experience, we'd have to see that FFX-3 Nojima was talking about. I don't mind, as long as it's not held back by that disaster X-2 and doesn't impede on FFVIIR. Maybe Tabata/Nojima could pull it off?

no_more_heroes3617d ago

I constantly have to remind myself of this when I play it. With the HD remasters, I'm playing FFX for the first time (I've played a bit of FFX-2 before, but an accidentally deleted save meant I gave up on it and didn't return to it). It's clear to see how awesome it would've been for its time, especially gameplay-wise, but the (mostly) higher definition textures on the still clearly early ps2 models and animations makes it a visually weird experience, but that's not a huge issue.

What I still can't get over is the voice acting. I've already been through the intentionally terrible laughing part which I heard was in there (though I didn't know it happened that early in the game) and it honestly wasn't that bad. Like people said, context is everything. No, my problem with the voice acting is almost every other line, especially from Tidus and Yuna (the leading pair of the game!). It sounds like the actors performed those lines in isolation instead of actual conversations in each others' presence. All while sounding bewilderingly cheesy (not the good kind, either).

Basically, my biggest gripe is the Sargento-produced voice acting. All the other flaws I totally accept as being inherent of the gen it comes from* (like unskippable cutscenes). The battles are quite fun, the sphere grid leveling is cool and the story so far hasn't gone to pot. The voice acting just takes it down two or so notches for me.

*Kingdom Hearts came out a year after FFX and had great voice acting, so being from that era of games is no excuse, especially for their main franchise at the time.

ameliabaz3617d ago

Yeah the script and voice acting tried too hard to match the lip-flaps and came off sounding so srilted and awkward. I also really disliked how squeaky and high-pitched Tidus's voice was for a 17 year old kid. It just sounded odd.

DiscoKid3617d ago

I agree with some of these. It was incredible for its time. Had it been released today, it would probably get mixed opinions like FF13 does.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle17d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted

Final Fantasy VIII is great and you are always the first to defend it in the comments

Auto Modellista will always be one of my favorite racers of all time..

gold_drake662d ago

id throw haunting ground into the mix. it still looks fantastic.

but i still dont quite understand why we never got a dragon quest 8 remaster for ps4. even the damn 3ds got one.

OtterX661d ago

I'd add Rogue Galaxy, Shadow of the Colossus.

Scissorman661d ago

Silent Hill 3 was straight up sorcery. It has better hair animation than most modern games, which is wild to me.

Venoxn4g659d ago

I would throw in MGS3 as well

It's so disappointing that to this day, I have not seen a game match what BLACK offers in an FPS.

ApocalypseShadow950d ago

Shame isn't it. I thought we'd be at a point of destructible backgrounds, objects, pyrotechnics etc in shooters. I sold many a copy in the demo unit when I managed a franchise Game Crazy back then. But I stopped playing shooters because they didn't evolve. Heavy weapon. Shoot a wall or glass. Nothing happens. Lol. Except for Killzone 2. I enjoyed that.

But then I woke and remembered it's EA. EA didn't care really. They just wanted to kill competition from Criterion and Burnout. And own Renderware to profit from as many developers used that engine. Only thing was that developers ran as fast as they could away from EA to Unreal Engine and its pop in and Vaseline graphics. Shame on EA. And then they bought Dice for Frostbite. Evil busters.

Anyway, too many PS2 games to count. Some of my personal faves being DMC, Genji, Bujingai, Blood Will Tell, Onimusha, Way of the Samurai, Japanese Berserk, Japanese Macross game that blew away the US Robotech game, RAD, Castlevania Lament of Innocence.... there's just too many. Let me stop. Lol

Cacabunga950d ago

Code Veronica
Dead or Alive 2 Hardcore
The Getaway
Time Crisis 3
Killzone
Mark of Kri
SSX

are some of my all times favorites missing on that list

shinoff2183949d ago

I've always Saud I'm not a fan of fps much , there's been some I really like and thought were really dope. Black falls into that category.

CoNn3rB950d ago

I would love nothing more than a remaster of the Jak series, including Jak X

Flawlessmic950d ago (Edited 950d ago )

The greatest console of all time !!!!

The last console from when gaming was pure, games didn't take 5 years to release, no online only, no half finished games, no mtx.

Ps2 was just banger after banger after banger.

It will always be my favourite.

sagapo949d ago

No Timesplitters in the list??

FinalFantasyFanatic949d ago

This is a really good list, pretty happy with the choices here.
