More Powerful PS4 Neo Will Launch This Year - Report

Sony's new and improved console could debut a year before Microsoft's Project Scorpio.

According to a new report, Sony's more powerful PlayStation 4, Neo, will launch before the end of 2016. That means it would arrive well ahead of Microsoft's Project Scorpio.

"Several sources have indicated" this information to Eurogamer's Richard Leadbetter. "If that is the case, it'll be interesting to see how developers utilize its resources, and whether 4K really is the focus. And we can be equally as sure that Microsoft will be watching just as intently as it gears up for its own next-gen roll-out," the report said.

I wouldn't be surprised! The Ps4 neo has gone with the imd specs that are already out. Microsoft have gone with the imd specs that come out officially next year. Microsoft said they could of released it this year but it wouldn't be a true 4k console so that's why they are waiting until next year.
Sony will have a bit less powerful console but they will have a year head start.

Deadpooled3640d ago (Edited 3639d ago )

I'm hoping it's at least as powerful as the Scorpio, and that the 4 Teraflop rumour isn't true. There must be a good reason why Sony left out the Neo at this years E3.

Edit - Probably Sony wanted to see if Scorpio's specs were confirmed to decide if they should continue with the current setup, rumoured to be just over 4Tflop. I guess if these reports are confirmed to be the case then it would likely be Sony going through with it.

seanpitt233640d ago (Edited 3640d ago )

The rumours have been spot on up to now so I think the specs will be right Sony might up the clock speed and bandwidth a little more than the rumours have said to compete with Microsoft but no matter what Microsoft will have the most powerful console come next year regardless.
It's all down to the price a year head start and games for Sony to compete against the more powerful console.

Foehammer3640d ago

Andrew House has pretty much confirmed, in interview, that it's not as powerful by downplaying the performance gap.

What I can't figure out is why we are here in June with no info on a (rumoured) release within 6 months.

Erik73573640d ago (Edited 3640d ago )

Holy shit. At Least as powerful as the Scorpio? Scorpio is the dumbest thing ever, who would want to pay for a 1000 dollar console when you could just get a pc with that power that does everything better. I don't get it, rich kiddies dropping money I guess.

Erik73573640d ago (Edited 3640d ago )

@foehammer

BEcause its just a playstation slim with slightly improved hardware

no_more_heroes3640d ago

@Foehammer

Might be because they have to focus on promoting PSVR, which is coming out October 13.

I do wonder how it would be promoted at this point though. They could've done like MS and talked about it now but, rightly or wrongly, that would confuse people even more than MS announcing Scorpio now.

Then there's the possibility that it's not as powerful as Scorpio is.

UltimateMaster3640d ago

Specs today are rumors and subject to change, especially since they now know what the Scorpio will look like, they have all the time in the world to make a bigger console.

freshslicepizza3639d ago

http://arstechnica.com/gami...

“It is intended to sit alongside and complement the standard PS4,” he said. “We will be selling both [versions] through the life cycle... All games will support the standard PS4 and we anticipate all or a very large majority of games will also support the high-end PS4."

so he won't confirm all games will be compatable?

ShadowKnight3639d ago (Edited 3639d ago )

@Deadpooled I don't want it to be more powerful than the Scorpio because 1080p 60fps is good enough since the neo is just an upgraded PS4 that runs the same games with a 4K Blu-ray player for just $399. A great price and profitable IMO. PS5 will be released in two years after the Neo anyway. With Sony exclusives running in 60fps I'll be satisfied with that until they release the PS5 in late 2018.

@Moldybread You're trying to hard 😅 and don't compare Microsoft to Apple😂😂

morganfell3639d ago (Edited 3639d ago )

The reasons are Sony was smart enough not to cut into their sales for the next 3 - 4 months. Sony also isn't behind so they are not scrambling for a solution. Just look at the same 3 - 4 MS supporters in every Sony thread doing their best. I have never seen people more scared. They exemplify the attitude at Redmond. All the power in the world is not going to stop a repeat of the PS2/Gamecube/Xbox generation. MS has been trapped into thinking that victory lies in power and it doesn't. Instead of pouring funds into real Xbox exclusives they have dumped money into R&D and a new console - where you always lose money at the start. They also had to send every game to PC, not because of a great program but in order to pay for the games they do have since the Xbox alone wasn't providing the profits.

Sony isn't in that position. They are leading and stepping up their true exclusives and making the PS4 the platform to buy. People can pretend things are better because PC gamers are on board but in reality Play Anywhere is a knife in the heart of Xbox hardware sales.

Sony does not view the Neo as an entirely new console but rather as an addition. If you believe some of the leaks then believe it all. They will insure nothing is exclusive on the Neo. If you saw their games at E3 they know they do not need to worry about power in order to stay far far ahead this generation. They have the best VR solution on the market, the best true platform exclusives, and they would rather have that be the E3 focus. Neo can be announced and then launch 30 days later as they did with the PS3 slim.

WelkinCole3639d ago (Edited 3639d ago )

No it wont be as powerful as the scorpio. It would be stupid if it is.

1. If it is as powerful as the scorpio it would cost 600 plus when it comes out the end of the year.
2. The majority of people have not upgraded to 4k TV yet and there are not many games in 4k.
3. And more importantly. Sony is not aiming to make the current PS4 irrelevant with a power difference like with Scorpio and the X1.

Sony has been very clear that Neo will be along side PS4 and complement each other meaning that they are not looking at pushing Neo at the expense of the current PS4. Meaning no huge gap but noticeable enough for hardcore gamers that want better performance such as better frame rates and I think better VR.

So most likely 1080p 60fps for Neo and 1080p 30fps for Standard PS4 which is fine with many gamers for now until 4k gaming becomes more common.

PS4 Neo is sort of a torjan horse for Sony into the next gen. It has one foot in next gen and one is current gen. I believe this is their strategy.

Once PS4 is dated nearing Scorpio launch. Sony will announce the PS5 possibly for the end of 2018 with better specs than Scorpio and will start to push the Neo to its limit with its head-start advantage + PS4 numbers will be hard for Scorpio to compete. Once the PS5 is launched Sony will ditch PS4 dev and refocus on PS4 Neo and PS5 dev going forward continuing another cycle until the PS5.5 is launched and Neo dev is ditched.

Omnislashver363639d ago

What bothers me is that Neo is basically just 60fps mode for the most part. I'd like graphics to be improved also.

medman3639d ago (Edited 3639d ago )

@deadpooled
Sony is doing a more incremental approach, Microsoft is taking a mental approach. And by mental, I mean the specs of the Scorpio are crazy impressive, but even with that, the Scorpio will struggle to achieve stable 4k@30fps. I don't know how many gamers really want that. 4k@60fps should be the standard for the next next gen consoles, and they shouldn't be released until the chips are there at a price that is reasonable. I feel Sony's approach will allow 1080p@60fps for most games, which could be argued is the smarter way to go at this point. Devs may think that just because the Scorpio has the power, they should struggle against all reason to do 4k gaming, and do it shabbily. We shall see. I hope both machines will include a 4k blu ray player, but I'm a bit dubious of Sony including that and hitting 399 for a price point. If they do, that would be fantastic.

mark3214uk3639d ago

i think it is a good idea for sony to release it this year and only be around 4.1 TF, we will get a powerful console 1 year before MS bring one out and looking at the time (6 years) just after MS release theirs sony will be ready to announce the ps5 and new generation specs

dcbronco3639d ago

I have often blamed the school system for the lack of comprehension skills and logic on this site but no more. There has to be some personal responsibility.

Some will accept that Neo will cost $400 and be twice as powerful as PS4. Ok, I know that's true because of the specs of Polaris. But those same people then believe Scorpio will have to cost $600-1000 even though it most likely includes Vega, a new GPU architecture from the same company that makes Polaris that will have twice the power per watt of Polaris and be more efficient.

Polaris already is capable of close to 6 teraflops for $200. An architecture twice as good should do 12 teraflops for close to that price. The RX470 has 4.5 teraflops for $150. So a Vega chip in that range should offer 6 teraflops easy and more likely 8 for $150. On a commissioned part at wholesale Microsoft will pay less than $100 for 7-8 teraflops.

If they're smart they include Zen and sell at a loss for six months(or still even) and go profitable with 10nm in 2018.

morganfell3639d ago

@mark3214uk,

If Sony were to announce a true NEXT Gen PS5 next fall things could be very problematic for MS. With titles they have announced coming such as Horizon along with hardware like Neo and PSVR they will continue to extend their lead over the competition. Announcing a machine next fall for 2018 would keep MS perpetually behind the 8 ball. It doesn't matter if Sony announces or not. By stepping next year instead of on par with Sony's PS5, MS have insured they will never catch Sony again. In away they have made the same mistake as Ninty.

BattleAxe3639d ago

"There must be a good reason why Sony left out the Neo at this years E3"

Yeah, the reason is that after everyone just watched Microsoft announce a 6 Tflop console, Sony didn't want to underwhelm with the announcement of a 4 Tflop console.

UltimateMaster3639d ago

If they were to launch a new console this year, they would have announced it at E3.
They're going to talk about it at the Paris Game Show, so it's not coming this year nor early next year.
They announced the PS4 in February and launched it the same year. They want people to be aware of their product and not keep it a secret, unlike Nintendo.

starchild3639d ago

Going by the leaks and what Microsoft and Sony have said it seems the Neo and Scorpio are mid-gen refreshes. They will play the same games as their predecessors, but with enhanced visual fidelity and/or improved framerates.

When the Neo releases this Fall it will have been 3 years since the PS4 came out. And since these are mid-gen upgrades I'd be willing to bet Sony will want to get another 3 years out of the Neo. Any less simply wouldn't be worth the investment from Sony and gamers. Most people are not going to want to buy Neo and then turn around and buy another Playstation console only two years later.

conanlifts3639d ago (Edited 3638d ago )

If it releases this year then i would guess it will be around 4tflop. I also think it would be in production by now ( or about to start) if releasing this year.
If on the other hand it's next year ( at least after april 2017) then i would think they will increase the specs closer to or above 6tflops.

bouzebbal3639d ago

MS will be eaten again if true.. One year of a gap is significant and ps4 will get many exclusive 4k content.

its_JEFF3638d ago (Edited 3638d ago )

If the PS4 Neo is using the new AMD chips, it should be at around 5/5.5 TF (like the AMD chips are) but Sony is very conservative with clock speed, rumors are that its in the 900mhz range hence the lower TF #'s. They could always bump that up before launch but heat may become an issue. I think the bigger issue with theses consoles is their CPU, by all accounts neither are powerhouses... will that change with the new consoles? who knows.

atticus143638d ago (Edited 3638d ago )

Sony is doing fine in sales as we all know, announcing a new console now, might make people want to wait and I'm sure they are wanting to move through inventory as fast as possible and probably introduce their own slim, along with Neo.

Sony still has Gamescon, Paris game week, Tokyo game show, and maybe even do another PlayStation experience event, they definitely have plenty of options left to announce.

Erik73573640d ago

From what I see sony isnt trying to make a super powerful pc like scoprio is but just putting a improved updated version of the ps4's hardware.

freshslicepizza3639d ago (Edited 3639d ago )

sony already stated they are trying to keep people within the playstation ecosystem by offereing a more advanced ps4. why is that any different than microsoft offering project scorpio which is also an option for console gaming? you guys just don't get it. you think that since microsoft is using windows as a platform that the xbox has no relevance any longer when in reality it is still a closed box and likely a lot cheaper than building a 4k comparable pc. just because games like forza horizon 3 are also now on the pc doesn't mean project sorpio is a pc.

$1000 for scorpio? based on what exactly? you guys just keep going on and on about how any xbox is no longer needed since xbox games are on the pc. tell apple they no longer need an ipod since they have a iphone. tell apple they no longer need a ipad since they make computers.

ShadowKnight3639d ago (Edited 3639d ago )

@Fries1223 I agree and they don't have to since their doing so well in sales atm. When the Scorpio launches in late 2017 Sony will have sold over 70 million consoles. Mark my words Fries. It sounds like Moldybread and Foehammer thinks that the Neo is the PS5 lol😅😅

JasonKCK3639d ago

@moldybread they refuse to accept it.

morganfell3639d ago (Edited 3639d ago )

@Fries,

I agree. Sony does not need to do anything than that which they are and in the direction they have indicated. They have a focused message and are now competing against the NX. They aren't competing against the Xbox any longer because like last gen when MS left the core crowd to chase the Wii crowd, they have now left competing against the PS4 to now go against PC gamers as well as compete against their own hardware. They are actually going to cause fence sitting PC gamers that are interested in a console to purchase a PS4. In a weird turn of events, MS are driving PS4 sales.

MaximusTKG3639d ago

@moldy bread

When is the last time you've seen an ipod? I was looking at getting an Xbox until all the exclusives I wanted were announced for pc as well. So that's at least one Xbox sale they lost. They still get their money from me though, so who really wins?

freshslicepizza3639d ago

@MaximusTKG
"When is the last time you've seen an ipod?"

today? i have an ipod mini and any iphone also plays music. the pc does a lot more than both a ps4 and xbox one and xbox scorpio but the thing is they are entry level systems. if anyone thinks they can build a pc comparable to the scorpio then go ahead but chances are you wont be able to for the same price. same thing with building a ps4 that plays games as well on the pc. consoles including scorpio are still closed boxes that are ready to go when you play. no fuss with finding formware updates and tweaking settings and so on. the stuff that consoles gamers prefer to stay away from.

"I was looking at getting an Xbox until all the exclusives I wanted were announced for pc as well. So that's at least one Xbox sale they lost. They still get their money from me though, so who really wins?"

the only winner is the person who is enjoying the games and not worrying about brand loyalty. microsoft is giving you the option, buy a xbox one s for $299, but a scorpio next year for ? amount of money, build or buy a pc and play windows games on it there. better choices than what the other console suppliers are giving us.

XanderZane3639d ago

Scorpio isn't a PC. You won't be running Excel spreadsheets or paying your credit card bills on it. lol!! It'll be the most powerful game console ever made.

Gazondaily3638d ago

Whats with people trying to propagate that the Scorpio is different from the Neo? They are both similar except for the fact that the Scorpio is much more powerful based on the rumoured specs of Neo.

ThyMasterDebater3640d ago

The only spec scorpio has is 6tflops, the neo hasn't announced any yet. all the information is speculation till its confirmed actual spec. 6tflops is a mid range pc, will be a low end by the time it releases compared to pcs then.

NotEvenMyFinalForm3640d ago

and a price advantage too considering the rumored price is $400 while there's no way Scorpio will cost less than $600.

BossBattle3639d ago

By the time the Scorpio releases the price may be cheaper. Don't look at the prices today of a console releasing over a year from now.

ShadowKnight3639d ago (Edited 3639d ago )

It will be $500 including tax without any great exclusives though. Microsoft is focusing more on hardware than first party studios. I can already see how this will play out 😆😂

I wouldn't be surprise if Halo 6 is their launch title. 😊

Aenea3639d ago (Edited 3639d ago )

@sean
Rumours have been spot on? So far the only thing they were spot on about is that it exists, we officially don't know anything else yet!

@moldy
Was replying to sean's comment that the rumours about the Neo have been spot on. Like I said, only thing that is correct from the rumours is that it exists and will release this year. To then claim that the specs are probably right as well goes a tad too far in my eyes...

freshslicepizza3639d ago (Edited 3639d ago )

the rumors talked about 6tflops, spot on. the rumors talked about scorpio comijng out in 2017, a new xbox one slim this year, both confirmed. the rumors talked about neo, sony conformed this. rumors talked about neo being as beefed up ps4 that will do 4k, sony confirmed this as well. rumors talked about neo coming out this year, so far that also looks to be correct. now sony is saying resolution isn't the only thing that matters, which to me hints its not as powerful as scorpio.

what exactly are you questioning that hasn't come true yet?

3638d ago
Movefasta19933639d ago

a bit less powerful? Let's wait first before making such claims.

3639d ago
finbars753639d ago

agreed like I said before we don't know much about the Ps4 Neo yet were we know what the Scorpio can do. The one thing people have to keep in mind is that Sonys developers seem to understand how to use what they got.I mean the games we saw at E# were running off the ps4 and already look better then the xbox games especially those that are coming out on Xboxone s.Gears 4 didn't look any were's near as beautiful as God Of War especially were gears is still corridor levels and God Of War is more open world now. They might have 6tfpls but MS developers just don't know or understand how to develope or take advantage of it. They just seem to rush the same games out every year. I want to see game come out with quality work done to it not quantity. The one thing that pissed me off about MS show was there games were running on PC because that is the direction they want to go. Don't put out 2 more consoles if you don't understand what your doing. Pushing your gamers in the wrong direction makes no sense. Depending on software sales wont get you any weres either you need to commit or just stop period.

gamer11383639d ago

@finbars

Wow. You are trying really hard. First correction, Gears was confirmed by Rod Ferguson to be running on an Xbox 1 S, same too with FH3. Go back and watch it , they specially mention the HDR capability of the slim. The PC demo was for an off stage Wildlands DEMO run by Ubisoft and had nothing to do with Microsoft.

That is BS about Sony developers knowing how to do more, and is a disservice to devs like Turn 10 and Playground who have delivered incredible looking racing games this gen. Considering the lower end tech inside an xb1, developers have done amazing things with it.

Comparing Gears 4 and GoW 4 is just pure fanboyism. They are different games. A better comparison would be Gears and the Order but even then gears trades the order's static environments for physics and destructible environments and most importantly: split screen. Comparison only work when you directly compare a game that is on both platforms. I guess wel'll see in 18 months how Scorpio and neo present themselves.

If anything you should be scared what the Xbox developers could achieve when they are not being limited by the HW of a base Xbox one.

You talk about not putting out 2 consoles but that is what Sony is doing. MS have just added a slim Xbox sku that will replace the old x1 as the stock clears.

But hey, whatever helps you sleep at night.

PainUzumaki3639d ago

they actually said they want to give the developers time to take advantage of the power

XanderZane3639d ago

Maybe, maybe not. It won't be as powerful as the Scorpio. The main reason Sony would release the PS4 Neo is so it can support the PSVR. Developers have already said VR games don't seem to run as smoothly using the PS4. We'll know for sure once the PSVR launches in October. I see no reason to run out and spend $400+ on a PS4 Neo unless you are also getting the $400 PSVR as well. Otherwise, I'd wait for a price drop next year.

LamerTamer3639d ago (Edited 3639d ago )

Sony went full retard on this one. They went too conservative. They tried to cheap out on the PS4 as it originally only had 4 GB of RAM until they upped the spec after seeing how MS did it right. Now Df multiplatform comparisons will always read "With the Scorpio bringing superior performance as well as better shadows, lighting HBAO, and draw distance in comparison to the weaker Neo".

Now Sony will know what it is like to always be bringing up the rear.

GrubsterBeater3638d ago (Edited 3638d ago )

Lol Scorpio may end up being more powerful (if *RUMORED* NEO specs are true), but what's the point of a super powerful "console/PC Box?" if there aren't any good games.

Sony will always be ahead of MS no matter what. This is because of GAMES. Tons of them. Quality games, too.

MS will always be "bringing up the rear", because they still don't understand that it's not about power, it is about quality exclusives, and tons of them, while also releasing them all throughout the year instead of blowing their mediocre load around the holidays.

I didn't think Sony was going to be the first to kick off 9th gen!!

pyroxxx3639d ago

Except they are not,.. MS is jumping the gun hoping 2-3 years head start to PS5 will make a difference,.. I doubt it.

ashcroft3639d ago

It will make a huge difference. Think of the WiiU. The only reason that thing bombed was because it released 7th gen hardware in an 8th gen war and third parties refused to stick along with last gen hardware.

What do you think will happen, when a much more powerful console comes out? They'll focus more on that and bring us less features and less emphasis on current gen. Similar what's happening with the ps3 and what happened to the ps2 once the ps3 came out.

Unspoken3638d ago

Actually Sony dropped the ball with NEO's release. If you already have a PS4 why buy a NEO? Waiting another year for Scorpio makes more sense unless you have enough disposal income. Then have the best of both worlds without breaking the bank.

WelkinCole3639d ago

Neo is not the start of the 9th gen. There is a reason why its labelled PS4.5. PS5 will not be until end of 2018 or early 2019 as a 5 year gen normally would last.

MS will officially kick it off with Scorpio.

ShadowKnight3639d ago (Edited 3639d ago )

Microsoft wants an one year head start with the Scorpio just like the Xbox 360 did to the PS3.

Microsoft is going to rely on Halo 6 for a launch title. Mark my words 😂

JEECE3639d ago

But MS has confirmed over and over that Scorpio is going to share it's entire library with XOne. So it is not the start of the next gen either.

abstractel3638d ago

Scorpio being 9th gen makes no sense if you know game development. Devs are told to use Neo's power as they see fit, 4k or whatever else, it's up to them but they are told that every PS4 game developed from now on must offer Neo enhancements -- I know this for a fact.

The reason we have games like Uncharted 4 and Driveclub that competes with the best of PC is because devs can utilize the specs 100%. On PC you need to set a target and then make bonuses for the hardcore people like me. The target spec is generally set by the consoles.

So with Neo, just like the PC, what you are going to get is upgraded visuals but not upgraded gameplay experiences. That won't happen until the actual official 9th gen. People always forget that more power doesn't just mean better graphics, it means potential for gameplay not possible on weaker hardware, hence why PC gameplay jumps happen when console gens happen. This half-gen will mean little for us PC users, but a lot for PS4 users (of which I am for exclusives).

Unspoken3638d ago

Misleading title....More powerful NEO, no its the same power that has been stated before which is much less than Xbox Scorpio's GPU.

5th gen PS5 in two years? That will be interesting to see if they cant deliver two brand new consoles within 4 years with brand new accessories. They really need to step up their game with PSN. The new Xbox Live features slated to hit are game changers! Clubs, LFG and Arena will take the community to the next level.

Neo is not the PS5. Andrew House already confirmed that.

343_Guilty_Spark3639d ago

So they plan on launching PS5 what 3-4 years from the Neo which will be in 2019-2020? By then Xbox Scorpio 2 will be launching. Or do you risk alienating Sony fans by launching another 3rd system that's more powerful than the NEO in 2017-2018?

ShadowKnight3639d ago (Edited 3639d ago )

The Neo is just an upgraded PS4 that plays the same games. PS5 Late 2018 to early 2019 release makes sense to me. It would be stupid for Microsoft to release another console in one to two years after the Scorpio. That would be bad for Microsoft to alienate their fans again. Their already about to alienate their fans next year 😂😂

Sony has already sold over 40 million consoles and can afford to release the PS5 in late 2018 which will make it 5 year's if you really think about it.

Jburr943639d ago

Why the dislikes? The Neo is not a next gen console it is an update. The next PlayStation has yet to come and Sony will probably match or surpass Xbox specs that round. The saltiness is real lol

ecchiless3639d ago

@343..56

Sony's Bluepoint Closure Should Concern Every PS Studios Fan

Sammy: "Sony disastrously and disgracefully shuttered Texas-based fan favourite Bluepoint yesterday. The long-time PS Studios partner never got a chance to ship a game under its new parent company.

This news hit me particularly hard because I believe it reflects the erosion of once-great PlayStation management that I think we’ve all been feeling for quite some time."

How was this allowed to happen? A studio know for excellent remakes and remasters were put on a GOW live service game? Something nobody wanted? There are so many other, more interesting projects, for me they were the prime studio who should have remastered or remade Bloodborne, what an absolute waste, I'm really annoyed about this.

Hulst should have followed Jim Ryan out the door, especially after his failed concord brainchild, execs really do only fail upwards.

If that was the case you would have thought Sony would have told Bluepoint no & had them make the God Of War trilogy remake instead while having Santa Monica Studios concentrate on the next God Of War & what ever else they're working on. A Bloodborne remake/remaster would have definitely printed Sony millions. It seems the upper management doesn't care what the fans think including them making awful business decisions. To take Bluepoint under their wing for 5 years & dismantle them is crazy work, Sony should have auctioned Bluepoint off to to a company that could really use them.

-Foxtrot106d ago

If the really did pitch it then they would have wanted their own IP for being a brand new game, not using someone else’s IP when it’s not a remake this time.

CrashMania106d ago

I mean I guess, but doubt that a small team of 70 wanted to do a live service game, I don't buy it personally, but we'll never 100% know.

Scissorman106d ago (Edited 106d ago )

i think you are half right. sony became hyper-focused on live service games and given that, studios would then pitch live service games because those projects were the most likely to be greenlit by the higher ups. now, as for what the hell bluepoint was working on since their god of war game was cancelled is beyond me. it's just increasingly frustrating when sony just announced a god of remake which is still in its infancy when bluepoint could have been working on it for years and likely would have shipped it by now.

MDTunkown106d ago

We had a god of war mp in the past and it didn’t do well back then with less competition so doubtful people wanted a live service game especially from devs that made some top tier remakes

Michiel1989105d ago

Copium like this is the reason they're in this position. Sony could do no wrong and when something did go wrong, it's never the corporate suits at sony who are to blame.....its either: devs bad or ms/phil spencer bad while their own backyard is on fire. This is the result of not caring what your fav company does just because another company does (way) worse and automatically condoning everything. I hope they can turn it around without having to fuck over their customers more because especially some of the games on ps1 through ps3 were absolutely amazing.

Can't really say im surprised it's gotten to this point although I didn't expect them to close Bluepoint who has always delivered stellar work.

1nsomniac105d ago

The devs didn’t pitch it. It’s already been discussed publicly. They had literally just started on a new undisclosed project they were still in the initial ideas phase when they were asked to stop and do GoW instead.

Extermin8or3_95d ago

Love the downvotes considering it's since become public knowledge that yes bluepoint DID infact pitch the god of war game. They also eventually pitched a Bloodborne remake but from software torpedoed the project, sadly.

Everyone keeps asking for a Bloodborne remaster or remake — a game that genuinely deserves preservation and modernization. Instead, we got a remake of The Last of Us and then a remaster of The Last of Us Part II, both of which were already recent and widely available. That decision feels tone-deaf. It’s hard not to question priorities when so many legacy titles are untouched.

Bluepoint built its reputation on honoring PlayStation’s history. They were masters at remakes and remasters. There is an entire catalog — from PS1, PS2, and PS3 eras — that fans would celebrate. Yet instead of leveraging that strength, they were redirected toward live service ambitions. Six years later, there’s nothing to show, and now the studio is gone. That’s not just disappointing — it feels like wasted potential.

Sony Bend is another example. Days Gone 2 wasn’t greenlit, and the studio was reportedly shifted toward live service. Years later, that project was canceled, and they’re back at square one. That’s years of development time lost in a generation that already feels light on first-party output.

What’s even more concerning is the broader shift. PlayStation used to thrive on bold, risk-taking single-player projects and strong Japanese creative influence. Now the strategy appears more Western-focused and heavily driven by the live service model — where multiple failures are acceptable as long as one becomes a breakout success.

Competition used to push Sony to take creative risks. The PS3 vs. Xbox 360 era forced innovation. Today, Xbox has shifted direction, Nintendo operates independently in its own lane, and Sony doesn’t feel the same competitive pressure. Without that tension, the urgency to push boundaries seems diminished.

The frustration many fans feel isn’t just about one remake or one canceled project — it’s about a sense that PlayStation’s identity is drifting. And while loyalty is natural, defending every decision without criticism doesn’t help the platform grow.

It’s not anger because we hate PlayStation. It’s frustration because we care about what it used to represent

These people aren't walking through the doors anymore

Relientk77106d ago

It does concern me that they think closing amazing studios like Bluepoint and Japan Studios is smart.

I'm honestly surprised Media Molecule is still around. They put out what 1 game in the past 10+ years? I personally wasn't interested in Dreams, so they have been a wash for me since the PS3 era. Are they working on a new game? What are they doing?

Stevonidas106d ago

I immediately recalled when they shut down Japan Studio. I don’t understand why any studio would agree to be acquired by Sony, EA, or Microsoft with their history of studio closures.

Reaper22_91d ago

Because of money. Most game studios need financial backing in order to develop games.

MrNinosan105d ago

MM is most likely next to close down, and my guess it's sooner than later

FTLmaster106d ago

Frustrating news, for sure. Hulst is on a major losing streak. Baffling decisions....

Lightning77106d ago

They could of let them do a Remakes of Sly, Jak and Daxter maybe the old Killzone games. Ported Demon Souls to other platforms. Steady revenue for growth becoming a 70 team to 100+ eventually.

toxic-inferno105d ago

Precisely! PlayStation have a rich back catalogue that is screaming out for a talented team like those at Bluepoint to work their magic upon.

Such wasted potential. And a terrible thing to happen to those talented workers at Bluepoint.

Demon's Souls remake was the gateway to FromSoft games for me. I'd fully beaten Bloodborne, but had struggled to get into Dark Souls. Demon's Souls - as a launch title - showed me how these games are meant to be played.

Miacosa106d ago

As a PS Fan and someone that looks to new exsperiences not rehashing old ones I can feel for the devs but it does not move the needle as far as getting new video games.

BAD MODERATION FROM N4G - fair but humorous and critical comments were hidden with the Spam label being incorrectly used for the cover up.

DarXyde201d ago

It feels more like them being bitter that no one supported it, but maybe it's me.

I'd appreciate them bringing back Warhawk—sadly I don't see that happening.

hombreacabado201d ago

hell yeah bring back warhawk. i thought helldivers 2 would fill that itch but not quite. that to me was the funnest online experience i ever had on playstation. last of us online was also a fun time but warhawk was quite cool made so many friends on that.

DarXyde200d ago

You and me both, mate. I'm totally a single player gamer through and through, but there was something about Warhawk that was absolutely captivating. Could play for hours.

Gamersunite880202d ago

Oh lord. This is hilarious. It's not Nintendo doing it this time. Lol

Lexreborn2202d ago

Did people really think they would let people potentially profit off of what THEY said was trash? It’s actually funny people even tried this

Commentby202d ago

The Sony overlords these people worship

StormSnooper202d ago

You gotta admit it’s weird that anyone out there wants to play it considering we were told it was shit.

Fishy Fingers202d ago

Profit? Hosting community servers would cost the mod team money, not make it :/

StormSnooper202d ago

Yeah, now they like it? Make up your minds people.

jambola202d ago

The people who liked it like it
The people who didn't like it, didn't
They made up their minds, its just different people with different views, I can't believe i have to explain this

InUrFoxHole202d ago

The overwhelming majority of people think its a dumpster 🔥. Even sony can make trash my man. I personally liked it but I also liked the last 2 medal of honors and people didn't like those either

Why Can’t Sony Make More Multiplayer Hits?

How the PlayStation maker lost—but still survived—gaming’s live-service struggle. The story about Sony's evolving strategy. Playing their strengths.

Christopher221d ago

Because they're bad at it and should stick to their strengths.

-Foxtrot221d ago

Also the market is super oversaturated these days. They’d have no chance unless it’s something that’s grown and nurtured over many years gaining a following, even then it wouldn’t be as big as COD, Fortnite and the like.

I still think if they refined the old school multiplayer “less is more” feeling that Uncharted 2s multiplayer had they could have done something with it these days but they made it too over the top and arcade like in U3 and U4 sadly.

Lightning77220d ago

They were doing it during the PS3 gen just fine though.

Christopher219d ago (Edited 219d ago )

No they weren't. CoD was steam rolling them back then and no one was competing with Halo. People just enjoyed the MP for a little while and moved on pretty quickly. None of them lasted like the competition. None of them.

blacktiger219d ago

Resistance and Killzone says hold my bullet

Christopher219d ago

Halo 2 - 8m+ sold
Halo 3 - 14m+ sold
Halo 4 - 10m sold
Killzone 2 - 2.6m sold
Resistance 2 - 3m sold

You can keep your bullets.

blacktiger219d ago

so now you are comparing lmao, and not to mention Halo is coming to PS5! lmao!!!!!!!

Travesty219d ago

Sale figures = great multiplayer experience
Got it..
Heard it first from here..

That’s the weakest argument. I played Halo and it was great obviously.
But so many different titles had really good online multiplayer.
Resistance Fall of Man. Was a solid title with fun multiplayer.
Killzone 2 was fun. Movement was slower but solid multiplayer.
Warhawk, probably my favorite. It was something different and had a very active community.

List goes on. But since sales = great multiplayer experiences than I don’t know what else to show you besides Call of Duty. 🤷🏼‍♂️

derek218d ago

@Christopher nonsense. Just because they weren't selling the most and/or had the most popular live service games doesn't mean they weren't making good games in the genre. Sony doesn't need to stick to any one type of genre, they have successful live service games in their portfolio. They need to get back to what worked during the ps3 gen so they stand out and stop chasing trends.

stupidusername218d ago

I'm happy we got Helldivers 2. But I believe Sonys biggest mistake was trying to force big single player studios to make multiplayer games based on big single player IPs. It just sounds like a bad idea from the get-go. Why did they need to force great studios like Insomniac, Guerilla, Bluepoint and Naughty Dog to make big live service multiplayer games?

Christopher218d ago (Edited 218d ago )

I think some people don't know what a multiplayer hit is. All of a sudden, number of people playing a game doesn't determine a hit? People need to be honest with reality here. If your competition is selling over 4x as many copies, you're not the hit game. And I didn't even include CoD in this.

MAG
KILLZONE
WARHAWK
SOCOM

all legendary series with very strong multiplayer

willo116219d ago

all great games. I feel the reason they keep failing is because they have abandoned pretty much most the franchises that made them who they are.

If they had made a new SOCOM, Killzone or MAG years ago they could have had a a strong set of multiplayer games but instead focused and making games like Concord that no one asked for a crowd that was never really there.

Yui_Suzumiya218d ago

MAG was pretty fun. Always wanted a sequel though.

Lightning77218d ago

Yeah they were. Killzone, Starhawk, Uncharted 2, 3 LBP2 resistance 3. Plus more.

Tapani218d ago

Because they are trying too hard.

dveio221d ago

They can.

But don't combine it with their strengths.

HD2 has identity. I don't think Concord had. And Marathon seemed lacking it, too.

Goodguy01221d ago (Edited 221d ago )

Dear god back when sony made highly underrated ones though. Socom, MAG, factions, uncharted 2 MP, resistance, warhawk, twisted metal, killzone 2+3....

I really wonder where they went wrong? The ps3 generation was amazing. It's just too bad cod and halo overtook the mp scene and these were all people played.

MIDGETonSTILTS17219d ago

Idk why MAG wasn’t bigger. And LoU mp was too good to not be expanded upon successfully. People STILL play it.

Kaizin514218d ago

Too early for its time. 256 players is cool and fun and has a lot of potential but it was hindered by the PS3 at the time, like many games were. Not saying it was bad, I enjoyed it quite a bit, but I just don't think the market was there for it. Bugs and stability were also a huge problem for it too, it felt like it lacked polish.

Sadly, it didn't do much to help Zipper Interactive. Instead of MAG, they should have put more resources and better ideas into making SOCOM 4 a proper SOCOM game instead of what we ended up getting. Sony has always had issues delivering on long form multiplayer series. Killzone was good, Resistance was good, SOCOM was great imo, but none of those titles lasted past their respective generations, especially when you have things like COD taking the reigns on the console shooter market.

I would have personally loved to have another SOCOM (and still do) but in my heart, I know Sony will never do it. COD has such a hold on what people "expect" out of a shooter on consoles that when something comes out, it will be compared to COD. Hell, even Battlefield 6 is the best BF game we have had in a long while (opinion, I know many will disagree) but it is still compared to COD in many many aspects.

Wish Sony would do more with many many series out there, but instead we get reboots, "remakes", and stuff like Concord which was just a tone deaf game to begin with, nobody wanted it.

Redgrave219d ago

They started trying to replicate fortnite money

Miraak82 219d ago (Edited 219d ago )

My favorite console gen , people tend to forget the SOE existed and had DCUO ,Everquest, SWG and Planetside . They were doing live service before live service was a thing . I played and was subbed to DCUO for like 5 years before SOE was sold off and the game kinda fell off for me , it was and is one of the funnest games I've ever played and experienced though , still always in the top downloads list on PSN . To say they're only good at single player games is silly as games like KZ , Warhawk and LittleBigPlanet had an active playerbase until they just killed the servers

jznrpg218d ago

I loved Everquest. Sony bought Verant after EQ launched and was already successful then resold it later but Somy did a good job while they owned it

Terry_B219d ago

There are thousands of good multiplayer games out there already.

Shadow Man219d ago (Edited 219d ago )

Sony could have struck gold if they never canceled the last of us 2 multiplayer, instead they wasted Billions of dollars on Concord.

Towers218d ago

I'm surprised with the downvotes. MP TLOU2 would have been amazing. The best part from TLOU2 was the combat and animation. An expanded version of the first MP would have been great. Unfortunately they got in the Destiny guys to look over it and then it got cancelled. Then put a lot of money into Concord...
