Why Microsoft Didn't Beat Sony At This Year's E3

Along with several other big players in the video game industry, both Microsoft and Sony held big pre-E3 press conferences this year.

Microsoft announced several exclusives coming soon to Xbox One and Windows 10, as well as two new Xbox skus—the Xbox One S launching later this year, and the Xbox One “Scorpio” launching in 2017.

darthv723618d ago

E3 is a trade show. It's not an ESports competition with one team trying to win against the others. That being said my personal "best of show" would be God of War for PS4 on the software side (though scalebound and zelda were also honorable mentions) and the XB1 slim for the hardware side.

C-H-E-F3618d ago

Have you not been watching E3 since last generation launch.. it is definitely a battle between the three giants for the last decade. E3 isn't what it used to be at all. Did you not watch 2013 E3? I believe you were in fact born yesterday...

darthv723618d ago

Uhh yeah I have been watching and it is the media and the gamers who want to put labels on things. these companies want to show off their wares and get people excited for them. Even when what they show can be a bit cringe worthy sometimes. but they still try and show enthusiasm.

End of the day, these companies are just worried about how they did in terms of letting the wares speak for themselves. They watch each other and compliment each other on things that stand out. They generally have no animosity towards one another like the gamers do.

AngelicIceDiamond3618d ago

So what's the prize for winning or losing a press conference? 2010, 11, 12 I felt like I lost a customer because MS had nothing good to show excepts Kinect stuff. But lately whats the prize if one, I guess, does better than the other considering both have great games to look forward? I'm just curious.

Actually respond don't just disagree and run like yall always do.

Pongwater3618d ago

It seems pretty obvious that the prize for winning a clear E3 victory is more positive buzz, whether it's through the regular media, social media, or word of mouth. Lots of people still haven't purchased an XB1 and/or PS4 yet, and many of them don't bother watching E3 themselves.

Aenea3618d ago

MS needs to make the pressco more of a show, less talking, less introducing other people on stage, less cringe worthy gameplay with lots of people (the coop fights with a big monster in both FF15 and Scalebound looked nice but I think it gives a way nicer view of the game to show several smaller things instead, the long fights become boring to watch rather quickly), ditch stuff like that Minecraft bit or last year's Hololens bit (while that was wonderful to see it had no place in the Xbox conference).

I watch to be entertained, not to be bored to death!

Microsoft used their conference to go in a Diffrent difrection and re brand Xbox as a family member under Xbox live connecting PC gammers

Sony showed lots of games that looked great but no dates

No one beats anyone it's down to view and what you think , both company's even admired certain aspects of one another's games and vision and dislike other aspects ...

The winner of e3 was the players and media who get write stories non stop for about a week

lastking953618d ago (Edited 3618d ago )

Exactly gamers won and neither lost. Now which you thought was better is subjective but no one lost this e3 postives all around.

WickedLester3618d ago (Edited 3618d ago )

Why are the impact of games shown at these conferences so contingent on whether or not they have dates? Honestly of all the things to nitpick, to me that is by far the most petty. It's not like there isn't a steady stream of games that have been coming almost every month prior to E3. Just because Sony chooses to show gamers what's on the horizon, doesn't mean they should be obligated to provide us dates that may or may not be accurate at this point. I'd rather them not show a date at all until they can lock one down and stick with it. We've already seen delays with games like Uncharted 4, No Man's Sky, and Horizon: Zero Dawn. I'd rather they just keep the date quiet until they know for sure.

Sweendog0073618d ago

I am not being petty just saying how gammers seen each e3 ... Like I said their games were great looked amazing and some I will pick up. But no dates which sucked to me I mean lets be honest you would love to play Spider-Man tomrrow if you could.

Like i said both consoles had its great and bad points , ms issues was they showed a lot of games that were already showen last year and focused on the way the Xbox is moving on

Which I liked that idea of cross play and the upgraded consoles were nice

PlayStation had great games but no dates made me a bit sad

The winner is the gammer not Sony or ms

WickedLester3618d ago

My apologies Sweendog007,

It wasn't my intention to sound like I was calling you out personally! I was speaking a general level.

Sweendog0073618d ago

General level I agree with you too many people make a meal of this date thing and the media seem to miss leading info on both ms and Sony

Ms are re branding Xbox in way to connect to more users acroos a wider platform and giving people more choice

Sony focused on games and what the can achieve on ps4 or neo graphical

That basically sums up e3 for Sony and ms

nosferatuzodd3618d ago

Lol hahahahahaaa some times I really of to laught at how Xbox fans think anytime there losing at anything it doesn't matter
This is the new thing they're saying now it doe the matter how much ps4 system sells because uncharted only sold 2.7 million copies lol are you serious uncharted sold that the fist week it came out you guys really believe the game is still at 2.7 mill ? Ok now it doesn't matter who won when Xbox wining anything you can hear the Microsoft shout 10 thousand miles away but when they're losing it doesn't matte just like how it didn't matter when ps4 has the better gpu it didn't matter when 3rd party look better on ps4 it didn't matter ps4. Has more 1080 p Xbox fans will say anything to sleep better at night we understand

If you want to judge this year's E3 on pure entertainment then it has to go to Sony.

MS may have laid out their future plans and evolved (in a way) how consoles work or release but there were many moments in their conference that were either slow or boring.

If you are going to put on a stage conference and broadcast it to the public then it needs to be entertaining with shock and awe.

MatrixxGT3618d ago

It would have if half of it wasn't leaked weeks beforehand.

gangsta_red3618d ago

Everything was leaked for E3. Horizon 3, God of War, Deadrising 4, State of Decay 2, the Spider-Man game

Another reason why these E3's are irrelevant. No company can keep their schedule or games under wraps. It's getting to the point where people need to unplug themselves from all forms of media.

miyamoto3618d ago

The PlayStation Nation won!

maybelovehate3618d ago

Sony didn't really have a conference. It was just a bunch of trailers. Would have been better just as an online event. Although to be honest, it is probably time for E3 to die and just have online trailers anyhow.

100_SavAGe3618d ago

What you mean just trailers? They showed gameplay right after them.

maybelovehate3617d ago

True, I meant to say Trailers and Gameplay. And I do think they had the best conference because of it. Point I was making is that the best parts could have easily just been shown online. Although I do want to try out PSVR in person to see how it compares to Vive and Rift.

cd13618d ago

Personally i found Sony's endless game footage with minimal chit-chat a welcome change. Also...why would you want E3 to "die" - for me its one of the best weeks of the year!

maybelovehate3617d ago

Agree about Sony's conference. I guess I just don't really see why we need E3 for Sony to do that though. They could have had a national Sony hype day on youtube that would have been just as awesome.

They for sure chose the worst way to deal with it

-Foxtrot14d ago

Funny considering Bruce left half way through development and now we get told there was an internal conflict with the story direction.

Makes you think…

HectixRose15d ago

I think it was good decision, if he was still alive, he would have been a mascot just like Kratos, drake and many others. These old dudes gotta die for new characters to take center stage with their own storyline. They keep dragging the emotional baggage into many sequels and eventually the story just turns into absolute shit show.

JEECE15d ago

It was ironic because people complained heavily about the story in the Uncharted games not having sufficient stakes because all the key characters always survived, despite the dangerous situations they were always in. Then ND killed a character in a more serious series and everyone lost their minds. Just shows that people don't always really want the thing they say they want.

CantThinkOfAUsername14d ago

I thought the more common complaint about Uncharted franchise was how the main cast are the good guys acting so nonchalantly while killing hundreds in cold blood (aka the dissonance between gameplay and story cutscenes). They just did it again in Part II.

Soy15d ago

Didn't have to kill him. Just have them part ways or Joel can "retire," whatever.

DarXyde15d ago

I don't think he would necessarily need to become a mascot (and besides, technically, I'd say Ellie is... So regardless, someone was going to be).

From a narrative perspective, I do think it has a similar effect to Ricky dying in Boyz N Da Hood: very likeable character, and you're really motivated to see the get back—in this case, it's more intense because it's an interactive experience. Most people hated Abby, but I get what they were after with portraying the cycle of violence and revenge—unfortunately, the game appears to want to take the side of the bad people.

But I will say that if Joel survived, it does become harder to tell an interesting story. What COULD have happened is an exploration into the rift between Joel and Ellie after the trolley dilemma events of the first game. It could have been interesting to see Abby out for revenge at the same time Ellie hated Joel.

Ashunderfire8614d ago

Sorry just had to say this lol! RICKYYYY!

Man Cuba Gooding Jr was miscast in that movie, but that part was cringey it was sad and funny at the same time man.

Ashunderfire8614d ago (Edited 14d ago )

I understand but the way they went about killing Joel, was poorly executed. Even the show of the Last of Us games tried to improved it, but it was just as bad. Well at least Joel got to know the reason why he had to die, before the death happened in the show. That part gave us the full context, but the game just let it happen with no pay off.

Joel death should have been a midway thing through the story, so we at least get to play him a little more with Ellie. Abby didn’t need to be this Hulk looking woman, but more like the show Abby which is a beater idea in my opinion.

The only ND game that was so disappointing to me I couldn't finish it.

pwnmaster300015d ago

Honestly as much as I loved the game, they could have just not killed him off.
I get it creator vision and all but killing a character that made you millions is just wrong imo. At least have him go down fighting.

Look I know VIII has its issues and all that but how on earth can the do big anniversary events with new artwork and merchandise for VII, IX and X yet VIII got sweet f*** all.

They could have given it something during its 25th anniversary yet all it got was a single Happy Anniversary post on their social media.

solideagle15d ago

they should know that we are OG fans of VIII as it sold truckload as well. not as much as VII or X. I personally didn't like IX but X and VI are my personal fav.

Shadow Hearts 2 covenant is another game I love. I hope one day someone can make remake, I would be delighted
